  • In this video I will destroy a pair of vintage John E Fast 1952 capacitors and a Soviet military capacitor k40-u9 that are good for electric guitar tone, especially Les Paul. You will see what is inside and which of them is real PIO (paper in oil), and which is foil capacitor.

Best viddy so far. So glad you put the glove on. I have cracked loads of capacitors open that looked like film/ foil type and found oil inside them, even square types. I worked for Sony in the late 90s , a boffin showed me capacitor designed with a " Bamboo and oil" core and explained how it would improve the sound and durabilty of the HIFi amp we were working on. Like to try one on a Guitar tone.

You can tell the 1st is not PIO by looking at the outside. It didn't have a solder seal on one wire to keep the oil in. The 2nd capacitor has the ball on one lead wire, next to the capacitor. That seals the oil in. If that seal doesn't exist, it isn't PIO. No need to cut anything open.

Yes. But this is interesting 😁

Have you tried rolling your own capacitors?
Right now I can only make up to about 0.01uF because I am having trouble rolling 5 layers straight.
Very difficult as film gets long. 😅
You seem very crafty, do you have any ideas you could share?

@@12AX7TFDia No, I haven't done it yet. I imagine technology but I don't dare to fall down another rabbit hole 😁 k40-u9 are very technological and good sounding capacitors. I don't think it's possible to achieve this kind of PIO quality in a workshop without recreating a completely original technology. I think in this it is very important to observe the thickness of the films, the tension during winding and the compression in the shell.

The K40 are very nice! I think all the Soviet Mil. caps sound very great. The K72 are supposedly better but haven't tried.
Here I can buy PIO black beauty and bumblebee fairly cheap so I usually go with that. Shizuki from Japan, also great MKP and have large values!
Ok, I'll keep trying rolling capacitors. If I figure it out maybe I'll make a video too 👍

Yes, absolutely right, people buy usually just a story and they take it as a placebo effect instead of trusting measurement tools .. I have old guitars and usually buy old tube radios in order to cannibalise parts.. got a nice stock of grey tigers from the 50's that is why i have also a lot of cheap lap steels from the 50s too...and little by little I'm replacing parts on my not so old guitars to test , see and hear differences and keep the stuff that sounds good to me. I have a couple of original paf pick ups , and it is also true that there is no such thing as a paf sound, they all sound different... it is not easy, but when i hear something i like, I just keep it. same with old bridges and stop tail pieces, they add a tiny bit of a difference... and same with guitars, if I need a new one I just go to a music shop in which there are tons of the same model , or I'll go to a factory and patiently among tons of those i pick mine... that way i don't really feel desperate for a "real" 59... first i don't have that kind of money and second, i truly know what i want. kudos unto you sir... honesty pays in the long and short term... keep it up guy, i follow your adventures in guitar land. get old wood on old furniture...that makes the greatest difference in sound transmission over wood, don't waste much of your your time on baking , and cooking wood on temperature and chemicals to stabilise it ... like all of the "new" guitars,,, there is not much good wood left on the planet without being "intervened" by the greedy manufacturers. cheers from Adrogue, Buenos Aires. been selling guitars and collecting in New York at 48h street for two decades.. the best guitar is the one that makes your sound inspire you. cheers... will send you some good Malbec wine one of this days... I dont know how yet, but I have russian friends at church... i will get some help sometime to deliver the goods. meantime, cheers..!

The Russian capacitor looks allot better build quality than 1st capacitor. The oil in Russian capacitor is not dried out like some capacitors do some of Russian capacitors have glass ends on them Russian capacitor has a better seal than the paper @wax capacitor. I have heard if your going to go with pio go with Russian capacitors.

Yes. You right. But actually k40y-9 and k40-y2 this in not russian caps. In USSR military capacitors was made in Ukraine 😊 I think this is the best production quality PIO capacitors.

Ukraine ussr miltary most caps there older once really excellent build quality older multi section can caps made in usa tend to like dry up that why you get annoying hum got replace them filter capacitor.

Jensen caps from 60s /70s ( yellow , biggish) sound great in some Strat style guitars, oil and paper but bigger.
