I actually like most of the color stories of these Too Face palettes, except the whites and the fact that the formula was going downhill since 2015/2016. Granted I never had one of these palettes but based on reviews, I sympathize.
True story: when my 3 year old wants to get into my makeup, I hand him a morphe brush and a super dry Too Faced highlighter because I don’t care if he destroys either.
I was so pissed when I bought my morphe brush. It was an instant glass shatter moment as I realized all those influencers were just bold faced lying. I've gotten better brushes from the dollar store before.
I feel like everyone forgot the Too Faced Melted Liquified lipsticks, the ones with the sponge tip applicator. They wasn’t a RUclipsr in 2015 that wasn’t obsessed with the shade Chihuahua. It was literally a liquified lipstick, a lipstick in liquid form, and wasn’t matte. This was just before the matte liquid lipstick trend and I coveted it so much (I was in HS with no money and no Sephora in the area)
I LOVED those! Bought them on a trip to Montreal and wore them nearly daily. Thought they were great quality and assumed the rest of the brand must be good, so I eventually purchased one of their peach palettes. Huge mistake--broke my eyelids out in a rash. And that swiftly ended my relationship with the brand as a consumer haha. Those liquified lipsticks were grand though
I feel like Toofaced benefited from the rise of Instagram. Having makeup that looked cute in pictures became enormously profitable. Same for YT thumbnails Now I think it’s too much about cute, photogenic packaging than about quality make up.
this girl in my drama club had a too faced chocolate bar palette and she told us that it tasted like chocolate and so me and all my 12 year old friends (who had a lot of time backstage because we were just extras) would stick our fingers in and lick it every time she went on stage 😭if you’re that girl,,, I’m so so sorry
@@zoeyburger1211 I don’t think it’s unusual for someone to have never used Too Faced...even during the 2012-2016 craze, I thought it was obvious that their products were junk quality 🤷🏻♀️ TF was getting dragged on sites like MakeUpAlley even way back then. Plus, they load all their products with fragrance, and many people have to avoid fragrance on their face, sooo....
Too Faced 100% created false scarcity with the peach pallette, also I just wanna say I'm so sad they stopped doing the 9 pan tins because the first high end-ish pallette I ever bought was the cat eyes pallette so I have a lot of nostalgic love for it, I still think the chocolate bar pallette is a great one for beginners, the formula isn't revolutionary but it's easy to use and gets the job done
Louise Bullock one of my first palettes was the too faced natural eyes in the cardboard. I got it nearly 9 years ago! I used the hell out of it and decluttered it a few years ago. It was the hardest piece of makeup to ever get rid of. It had sentimental value!
Those 9-pan palettes were great! They were good quality and great color stories. Bulky to store but they were worth it, I went through the Neutral Mattes, the Cat Eye, the Bouidoir Eyes, etc. Those were sexy and pretty, but they didn’t feel like they had the same vision and branding as all the candy palettes.
I remember Two faced the brown 12 pan (not sure what it's called andni think I JUST threw it away (didnt use it, but kept it for memories...I need to check and see if I have it and throw it away if not) but it was my first non drug store pallette. It had boring colors, but had instructions and pictures to show how and difficult eye looks to use it too.....I didnt even think about this until I read your comment!!
Hi Hannah, I’m 31 years old. When I was in high school, Ulta first opened, and that was my first introduction into Too Faced. In 2006/2007, their vibe was actually very much like Benefit was at the time where their whole thing was very retro inspired, while also being very tongue in cheek and sexy. They didn’t really appeal to me at the time, as I was more of an urban decay girl. Now it seems they can’t decide if they want to be sexy, or about food, and baked goods, or for children. But they were very cool once, and good quality and it’s really sad to see how far they have fallen. Great video as always. Thank you for the research that you put into your videos!
Also please talk about “makeup collectors”! I remember being a teen with no money watching so many youtubers justify buying so many things because they were collectors and hoping one day I could collect makeup as well.
God the makeup collecting days… I def fell victim in 2017-18 when I started working big girl jobs after college. At one point I was spending $150-$300 a month on makeup as it came out. I’ve since purged over half of it, and I’m about to purge again. What a waste!
Hi Smokey! I suffer from a bad anxiety disorder and when I need to fall asleep or feel less anxious I watch your evolution of videos. They’re my very favorite!
I have a go-to channel to help me sleep too! I'm not alone! These deep dives I get way too invested in and I listen instead of sleeping. I put on the RUclipsr "The Exploring Series"; he's got a huge SCP playlist. I put the volume low so I can just make out what he's saying and let his kinda monotone voice carry me away. ASMR annoys me more than relaxes me, so that's out.
Thank you so much, Hannah, for giving me the chance to share my research! You are wonderful! It was great collabing with you again! This series you started is fantastic.
Yes!! Mac please! I’m still using their classic eyeshadows on a regular basis but their collections, that were awesome at some point, changed to boring when they were sold. I don’t remember buying something from their new collections in the last 5-6 years.
Yes. Yes,it does. At least to FEEL old...happens to me all the time. The oldies station where I live now plays the music of my childhood now, not my parents'.
@@smokey_glow Maybe it’s a Cameo idea- short little “evolution of” videos for birthdays etc. lol undoubtedly there would be quite a bit of revisionist history going one in those!! Lol 😝
I honestly feel like the only way they can come back from their downfall is if they rebrand. 2020 was the year of modern, sleek, natural, minimalist packaging...and Too Faced as a brand is the absolute opposite. Imagine if they changed their name to “New Face” completely rebranded, but kept some subtle nostalgic touches, and really focused on the trends and quality over quantity. I feel like if they did this, they’d bounce back, but as of right now they have died out in the world of makeup.
I think there’s a market for them they just need to own their niche and get good at it. Some people really like the over the top cute packaging and everything. The issues are the products need to be good, plus the packaging can’t make it unusable. I think it was Audra at Home who was talking about this recently, where there are some releases in very cool packaging where it’s like - but where do you keep it? If you end up having to store it out of the way then you never use it. So either make it modular so you can put the cute packaging on display separate from the product in a smaller container, or make it a form factor where it isn’t troublesome to have to leave it out - like it doesn’t take up tons of room on a table and can easily just be opened and used. My mom got a GWP from one of the Macy’s brands this Christmas and it has a ‘cute’ factor all packaged up because it’s in a train case sort of thing, but you can take all the stuff out and just have a decent looking train case, and put the products into whatever organization system you have. I like something like that - I’d use the train case/outer packaging for storage of extras (I tend to buy stuff I use regularly in multiples so I don’t have to repurchase every month) on a shelf where it can look pretty, and have the products in with everything else where I will use them. Especially with the climate/environmental issues, I think brands absolutely should be looking towards things being usable and reusable as just part of product development.
I think they reaallllyyy need to focus on their product consistency and quality. I’ve been so close to buying some stuff but each time I don’t because I’m worried it’s going to be a dud.
Why is that sad? There are only so many colors, new generations of people interested in makeup come along, old makeup goes bad, so why is that “sad”? Not a fan or a hater of Too Faced, but this is criticism for the sake of criticism and doesn’t make any sense when you think about possible reasons why they look similar.
@@theelectricdi I just feel that all of their releases have the same colors over and over. The consumer can barely buy more than 3 palettes from the brand without having many overlapping colors. I just wish they had some new creative ideas that’s all.
@@theelectricdi people dropping 50 or more on just an eyeshadow pallette like a bit of variety of colors...why keep doing the same colors over and over and over?? It makes no sense once you have one pallette, and if you like the forumla, you would want different colors in a good forumla, instead of buying the same pallette over and over...... I want the ..oh my gosh...the two faced dog pallette...clover maybe?? The packaging is cute and the money is SUPPOSED to go to an animal charity, but I have never been able to get myself to buy it because two face quality is sooooo bad for their formulas...I have like 6 or 7 of their pallettes, maybe more(I got on sale at sephora through the years)..and I only like the peachy matte one formula, but the colors are too much
One year for Christmas, I asked for the UD naked pallette and ended up getting the too faced naked eye pallette because no one knew what the hell i was talking about. 😂

I've been thinking about how Too Faced is inconsistent and tries to be sexy and cute/ wholesome at the same time and I think that's part of the schtick. That's them being TOO FACED (two faced).
I thought that was their marketing strategy too. They were the lady in the street and freak in the sheets. Innocent and then sexual at the same time lol
It's so funny seeing Emily Noel in other people's vids esp since she was one of the first beauty youtubers I ever watched and I specifically remember her Too Faced Chocolate Bar palette vids and buying one because of her. It's a shame Too Faced fell off the way they did cuz some of their products were my absolute favs like their Born This Way foundation and their Melted lipsticks and their Lip Injection. But the owner and his sister's behaviour just made it rlly hard for me to keep on supporting and there are smaller brands owned by actual good people out there that deserve ppl's support.

It was the second semester during my first year of college and I was really getting into beauty guru's and was soooo inside the makeup consumer bubble. I remember setting all of the notifications and everything to make sure that I got it. I ended up getting it and for the most part I was happy with it because I didn't really have many things to compare it to. That palette makes me so nostalgic and sad at the same time because looking back I would have saved so much money if I wasn't caught up in collecting.
This was really well done! I wish you had talked about the expansion of the born with way foundations that they did with Jackie ieana. I’m pretty sure it came out around the same time as tarts foundation. And met a demand in diversity in skin products.
It's hilarious to me how now we're overwhelmed with products in the makeup market when less than a decade ago all releases were 50 Shades Of Beige & consumers were EXCITED about it. 😂😂😂😭😭😭 Merry Christmas Eve & Merry Glowmas everyone!!!
Could you do an evolution of tarte. I think it’d be interesting with all the brand trips they did and the fail of shape tape foundation not having a larger shade range.
It’s so weird, all these launches were so familiar, I worked at an Ulta during a lot of these and kept up with the makeup community, but I never ever remember the better together palette. Maybe for the better
Seeing Too Faceds old packaging from 2012 gives me such nostalgia! I remember watching juicystar07 and she always did looks with the warm neutral palette (idk the name) and I wanted it so badly! I loved the cardboard 😂

As dumb as it sounds, that Rich Lives Matter cake was the final straw for me. I will never buy from Too Faced because of that cake on top of everything else.
It doesn't sound dumb whatsoever. That's the right thing to do after that cake. And I remember, especially that year was the "golden" year of flex culture. That time was the "Stop Being Poor" year. A lot of degradation to the less fortunate, Trump's most cruel years with ICE, human rights' violations and the vanishing of middle class and sort of things. He is a piece of crap.

I was so pissed when I bought my morphe brush. It was an instant glass shatter moment as I realized all those influencers were just bold faced lying. I've gotten better brushes from the dollar store before.
@@ruminationstation4200 SAME. the morphe brushes i have feel like sweeping twigs from a tree over my face
They still make those and they’re nice, I always loved that sponge tip applicator.
I love those. I got one from ross which is a store similar to tj maxx
I don’t wear much makeup but on the rare occasion I do, I have a few of those melted matte lipsticks and I love them!!
Omg.. chihuahua was my shit!! Hehe
Why did the phone palette look like the “makeup” you’d get in a magazine when you were 5
too faced is expensive kids makeup
not the chevron print 🥴🥴🥴
That’s what I though it looked I like a shitty kids make up you can get for $ 2-3 at Walmart
The plastic housing came off and was an actual iPhone case
I feel like Toofaced benefited from the rise of Instagram. Having makeup that looked cute in pictures became enormously profitable. Same for YT thumbnails
Now I think it’s too much about cute, photogenic packaging than about quality make up.
this girl in my drama club had a too faced chocolate bar palette and she told us that it tasted like chocolate and so me and all my 12 year old friends (who had a lot of time backstage because we were just extras) would stick our fingers in and lick it every time she went on stage 😭if you’re that girl,,, I’m so so sorry
This comment is why I have trust issues. lol

If this is not the epitome of how 12 year old girls behave!!!!!!

Smokey: Hey let me tell you all about a brand whose products you've never used

This comment is hilarious.
You’ve never used ANY too faced? That’s a bit unusual
@@zoeyburger1211 not really
@@zoeyburger1211 I don’t think it’s unusual for someone to have never used Too Faced...even during the 2012-2016 craze, I thought it was obvious that their products were junk quality 🤷🏻♀️ TF was getting dragged on sites like MakeUpAlley even way back then. Plus, they load all their products with fragrance, and many people have to avoid fragrance on their face, sooo....

Please do evolution of colourpop next
Elle S did a history of colorpop. Its pretty good.
With the amount of things they release the video would be like 3 hours long 😂
Too Faced 100% created false scarcity with the peach pallette, also I just wanna say I'm so sad they stopped doing the 9 pan tins because the first high end-ish pallette I ever bought was the cat eyes pallette so I have a lot of nostalgic love for it, I still think the chocolate bar pallette is a great one for beginners, the formula isn't revolutionary but it's easy to use and gets the job done
Louise Bullock one of my first palettes was the too faced natural eyes in the cardboard. I got it nearly 9 years ago! I used the hell out of it and decluttered it a few years ago. It was the hardest piece of makeup to ever get rid of. It had sentimental value!
My first high end palettes I bought were the Chocolate Bar palette and the Semi Sweet Chocolate Bar palette. I was a junior in high school.
Not for deeper skintones though
I remember Two faced the brown 12 pan (not sure what it's called andni think I JUST threw it away (didnt use it, but kept it for memories...I need to check and see if I have it and throw it away if not) but it was my first non drug store pallette. It had boring colors, but had instructions and pictures to show how and difficult eye looks to use it too.....I didnt even think about this until I read your comment!!
Me when I realize that glowmas is almost over and soon we won't be getting daily videos anymore: 🥲
Can't believe you didn't even mention their mascara! I swear, that mascara had to have single handedly saved the brand 😂
I’m finding it hilarious that every palette has the same colours 😂
At this point the only thing that is consistent with Too Faced is their inconsistency
Thank you so much, Hannah, for giving me the chance to share my research! You are wonderful! It was great collabing with you again! This series you started is fantastic.
Please do Mac next !!! Love that brand and have a huge collection started in 2008! I’ve stopped a bit since 2014 or so
Yes!! Mac please! I’m still using their classic eyeshadows on a regular basis but their collections, that were awesome at some point, changed to boring when they were sold. I don’t remember buying something from their new collections in the last 5-6 years.
It's so weird watching a history lesson that I was a part of and remember like it was yesterday! Is this what it means to be old???

I honestly feel like the only way they can come back from their downfall is if they rebrand. 2020 was the year of modern, sleek, natural, minimalist packaging...and Too Faced as a brand is the absolute opposite. Imagine if they changed their name to “New Face” completely rebranded, but kept some subtle nostalgic touches, and really focused on the trends and quality over quantity. I feel like if they did this, they’d bounce back, but as of right now they have died out in the world of makeup.
That's a brilliant rebrand concept!
They need to hire you lol I don't think they have an original thought right now and people like you!
@@jperron they die in America but there's a whole world out there, in Asian they're loved, not everyone does the harsh makeup that Americans like.
It’s sad that all of their 2013 release look the same as their 2020 releases💀
Exactly the same. No difference
The packaging is cute and the money is SUPPOSED to go to an animal charity, but I have never been able to get myself to buy it because two face quality is sooooo bad for their formulas...I have like 6 or 7 of their pallettes, maybe more(I got on sale at sephora through the years)..and I only like the peachy matte one formula, but the colors are too much
Powder eyeshadows pretty much last forever so too faced making the same thing is a bit scamming
One year for Christmas, I asked for the UD naked pallette and ended up getting the too faced naked eye pallette because no one knew what the hell i was talking about. 😂

The peach palette was my first big sephora purchase. It was the second semester during my first year of college and I was really getting into beauty guru's and was soooo inside the makeup consumer bubble. I remember setting all of the notifications and everything to make sure that I got it.
