How I Found & Fixed my Non-Running Honda CRZ | The Auction Car Story

  • Was my Honda CRZ meant to be? In today's video, I give you the full story of my new project car. From a dead auction car to a perfectly running vehicle in about 20 minutes, I think I lucked out!
    In my previous video, I introduced you all to my new Honda CRZ project and my overall thoughts on the car. I mentioned that I bought this car at auction and the story was quite interesting ( at least in my opinion). I've always thought the CRZ's were such cool cars, but I never thought I would own one in this particular scenario. Unlike my Honda Civic purchases, I was truly going into this as a blind buy for a non-running vehicle. But who woulda thought that a couple fuses would be the answer? This is definitely one of those ideal Chris Fix moments haha.
    I do find it oddly convenient that after months of searching for a new project car (that's different than what I've done before) THIS CRZ pops up in my feed. I wasn't searching for this car, but I'm glad it found me. Again, I wanted a BUDGET friendly car that I can have fun with and throw some mods at to make it my own. I know there's been a handful of comments regarding the CVT transmission and that I should have bought a nicer example, but...it's a $2400 car in an insane market. I would flintstone the damn thing for that price.
    As you can see, I was pretty stoked about this situation. I went through an emotional rollercoaster for about 12 hours to have it all pay off. So what I'm trying to say is, follow your gut in situations like this. It could pay off with a $100 battery and $5 worth of fuses. I'm super pumped on this car and the story makes it that much better. So let's see how we can start making this thing better!

    This is a SUPER common practice. Auction Rats go to auctions and purposely rig and sabotage cars in the hope they get the car at a cheaper price. Some auction houses hire these guys to do this on purpose to make more money in situations where customers back out. I’m excited for this build always loved the CR-Z’s.

    • @zerokazahana3771
      @zerokazahana3771 5 месяцев назад

      I was thinking of the other angle; the buyer wanted to back out, pulled fuses and said it didn't run so they could back out for $500; but auction houses doing it to make the back out money seems just as likely from a shady place.

    Story sounds like an AllDayAnthony type of story. Glad everything worked out for you man. One of the things that has drawn me to your builds is that they're really normal and anyone could do. I was thinking the same thing. Only other plausible explanations I can think of is that someone that worked there wanted it and pulled the fuses, or if there's some sort of mechanic that gets the basics running, they pulled some fuses and never put them back in and didn't hear about the issue. Not really a lot of possibilities that I can see here.

      My dad's friend buys cars from the auction and he said some guys pull fuses from cars so that other ppl won't be interested in bidding for it. But sometimes after paying for a few cars,they don't have enough to pay for all the ones they picked and pulled the fuses from so they leave and they can care less about putting the fuses back in the car that they couldn't buy. So I'm pretty sure thats what happen in this case.

    I just picked up my 2011 CRZ (6spd) a few months ago. I drove it from TX-NY and back, and the car was absolutely great. Took it on some twisty mountain roads through NC, TN, and VA. It was an absolute blast.
    I have more plans for it in the future, but for now all I've done is the Takeda intake from aFe and swapping out the intake manifold for the GE8 Fit's. The intake noises are nice, and it does help open the throttle up a bit. Chasing power out of this thing isn't the plan, but it was a quick, easy, and affordable place to start.
    Next will be coils, wheels, and tires!

The whole exotic car thing has become really over done and really isn't that relatable. Can't wait to see what you do with the car! Well they did make them in 6 speed and Honda did have intentions of putting the K20Z3 engine lsd tranny but the crz didn't pass crash test with the k20. Guess they felt the engine was to close to the firewall or something. So honda didn't bring out the Si version,instead they called it the EX and kept the same engine from the base model crz. I'm kinda glad they didn't put the k20 though cuz now that ima be installing a k24a2 on my z,it'll make it kinda unique since not many crz's sold(probably because of the Si version not being produced)plus with a k24 swap it'll be unique imo.

    The CRZ uses its IMA hybrid motor to start the engine so it doesn't ever "crank" unless the hybrid battery is dead and it's using the backup starter motor

    • @boxer951
      @boxer951 2 года назад

      I'm not sure if it actually has an external starter since my hybrid battery died one day at the drive thru and it took about a minute and then it turned on but I think it used power from the regular 12v battery to just start it,using the same method,so no starter needed.

At least that’s what the shop told me. That was pre-mods and I haven’t been back since. Only did two mods…AFE intake and HKS silent hour-power exhaust. Just what I was looking for. Not loud on the highway but a nice sound when cruising 40-55 mph.

Just my two cents here but on the subject of future mods I’m curious if you’re considering Hondata Flashpro? I just happened to see a video related to a CRZ…didn’t realize they had one for it. Unless something has changed I believe only the manual version could use a Jackson Racing supercharger so if that’s still the case the Hondata tune may be a good option. I had their off the shelf tune on my 2019 Type R and later on installed a Phearable Stage 2 tune. No issues with either tune. John Vega’s Tune improved power,shift points,etc. Highly recommended but I haven’t checked his website for a CRZ tune. Wish you the best of luck on whatever you end up doing either way!

    Wheels and tires make the most difference of course. but as others have said the GE8 intake manifold is a cheap upgrade. just some cheap quality of life stuff: Honda ridgeline horns are plug and play. there are clazzio seat covers people like for the 11-12 seats. or if you can find the 13+ seats in black they dont dirty as easily. progress rear sway bar is fairly inexpensive. spoon FSB is nice but sometimes hard to find or takes forever to ship from japan.

    I've had enough of my bum hurting 😂, I've had mine since 2015 got it for 7,000 with 75,000 miles on it. The emissions light finally popped on this year, I made it to 181,800 miles. I'm afraid of the cost to repair this and more that's to come when I reach 190,000 miles. So I'm trading her in next week, it was a fun car but I need more comfort and room these days. Plus it's always a head turner and tired of the attention lol just want a normal american non hybrid car these days.

    The car chooses you, we don't choose them and that a known fact man. Congratulations to you and your new CRZ. I can relate to the market being at a all time high and it really crazy for what people are asking for a regular shell with no engine.

    I got a black 2011 crz back in 2019 with basically the same damage. It had 150k miles and we got it out of state for only 3k and last year it got in a head on collision and the frame was damaged.

    Watching this video got me thinking trade in a 13 Si for a 13" CRZ regardless it made lot less power... Idk man like the car a lot but a lot of compromise with only 2 seat 😭

    without watching the video, just knowing what i know about this car from owning it for about a year and a half my guess as to why it wasn't running is that the 12v battery was dead xD
