Hello there!
My name is Kathryn Layne!
Being the youngest of three girls meant there were always different CD's playing at the same time from three different bedrooms. I was introduced to all sorts of different music, but I gravitated towards jazz, blues and world music. I would listen to the "Woman On Top" soundtrack on repeat, or Seal's first album released in 1991 while I would ride my bike in a continuous loop. I never found myself getting in to the "Top Hits" or any other genre other than what I knew I enjoyed.
Which means there is SO MUCH to catch up on!! I realized how much more out of the song I got when my husband would have me sit, stop, and focus on a particular song he enjoyed. Being a busy mom, this blew my mind with how I was able to really feel and experience new music. Without the distractions I finally felt the art that is unique to every single song.
I absolutely love music and I can't wait to really take a moment to focus on new songs that I have never heard before. Please feel free to comment with a song(s) you would like for me to listen to and remember to stay kind and peaceful in the comment section.

You can’t pick “superman” as your first impression to Eminem. You can’t vibe and appreciate where he’s coming from… in era or state of mind. The man is a genius and has songs/lyrics that speak through everyone going through just about any hardships in life . FOREVER THE GOAT
His ex wife Kim used to cheat on him a lot and treat him like shit before he became famous. She wouldn't even let him see their newborn daughter for a while because she thought he wasn't going to amount to anything and wouldn't be able to support them. Then she wanted to reconcile once he blew up obviously, and I think he kinda got back at her for all the shit she did to him. They've been married and divorced twice. Very toxic.
Then, his first and only "celebrity" relationship was with Mariah Carey, and she must have been embarrassed about being with him or something, so she started telling the press that they never had anything happen between them and that she barely knew him. I remember seeing an interview where she was asked if there was anything going on between them and she almost looked offended that they would even assume she would ever date somebody like him. He took it personally.
His mother also emotionally abused him when he was a kid. She had munchausen by proxy and would force feed him all kinds of medicine as well.
All of the women in his early life treated him like garbage, and now that he's a superstar he feels like he'll never be able to find a new woman who would love him for who he really is and not just the fact that he's Eminem.
So there is a lot of misogyny in his lyrics throughout his career, but if you look at his history it's actually kind of tragic in a way. He's 50 now and he hasn't had a public relationship in almost 2 decades. Yet he's raised 3 little girls who have all grown up to be happy, successful and extremely humble, despite their Father's status... and everyone says he is an amazing and loving father. It's kind of ironic in a way.

I think you had to live through the culture of this time to appreciate this song. I’m so glad I was a teen in the late 90s/early 00’s it was amazing!

This is a rough song to start the Eminem journey. I see others have already started to fill you in on his backstory and you continued forward. Appreciate the honesty with the review, if I heard this as my first real effort listening to Em, I wouldn't understand or enjoy the song either.

FUN FACT: You commented on his 'nasal' sounding voice in this. This is actually because at the time he was suffering pretty badly from Tinnitus, and so he said he would have to rap in a more 'mid-range' pitch so that he was able to hear himself when rapping over the ringing from the Tinnitus.

Mariah Carey was supposed to do the back vocals for this song when they were hooking up, but that fell apart and I think he kinda rewrote parts of the song with her in mind. So the "her" you're referring to is actually Mariah Carey lol

Eminem is the king of toxic relationship songs. The longer you listen to him the more you will see that he is incapable of writing any positive love song or any positive song about any woman aside from his daughter.
He only had one gf and later wife before becoming famous. And the first relationship was toxic for both.

I just happened upon this channel to see a newbie react to some Eminem classics. I'm glad to see that his story roped you into his music, but, since you mentioned that you were a jazz girl and I see that you're looking into Metallica and other heavier music, I was wondering if you'd have a look at some of Primus. A lot of what he raps about his own feelings and experience but a course alot of it is his playing a character, it’s a work of art. There’s a difference between what he portrays in his music. In real life a someone broke into his house and Eminem didn’t even try to hurt the guy even when he had every right to.
I used to listen to this song a lot because it basically represented the same shit that I experienced with girls I remember one time I did go back and listen to it after I got rejected from asking a girl to prom. I got so pissed off and I went home and played this song and it made me feel so much better. Basically the moral of the story and the song is women are nothing but trouble and never trust a smoking hot woman with a rocking body and big tits.

The songs are pretty brutal but i see it as his way of letting the listeners know how he feels in a vert violent way, its kinda metaphorical rather than literal.

Honestly, fair. You don't have to like every song an artist puts out. There are at least 2 from Eminem that I all but refuse to listen to. And, 20+ years ago when this one came out, I didn't like it at all either. It was one that grew on me though over the years and now I think it's just a fun song. Not his best, far from his worst. So I'm down for seeing where this trip takes you.
You also have to take into account Em's sarcasm singing in a "love" song about being her Superman. You can hear he is really trying to sound bad in the chorus. But ya he cant sing for shit!
