A Horse Falls at the Sligo Races, County Sligo, Ireland

- A gallant mare fell at the Sligo Races on July 5, 2009. She had run almost two and a half miles. The turf was soaked from torrents of rain that fell on and off all day. The third time she came around the bend and cleared the final hurdle, she fell. The crowd was silent as the horse lay on the track without moving. The vets came and the mare still did not move. The horse ambulance arrived. Did they have to put her down?

Actually, I love the Sligo races and the race track itself--the horses, the grooms, the jockeys, the trainers, the betters, bookmakers, the crowds, the food, everything about it. It is one beautiful and accessible track. I know horse racing is dangerous for horses and for riders as is any sport for any participant. I, for example, have a seriously broken leg from a horse accident I had two weeks ago. I will be in a cast for six more weeks. I accept this as part of the risk of the sport.
What a great bloke you are--if you are a bloke. If not, you are a poet with a way with words. I think you are one of the most articulate person I've ever encountered. I was riding race horses before you were born. I hope you spread your kindness and way with words throughout the world. I imagine you are most loved by all given your kindness and respect you show to others.
I didn't mean the video as an insult. I saw it as a tribute to horses. It is true that I sometimes cry when I see horses thundering down the track on the far turn toward home. Their effort, the efforts of the jockeys, the grooms, and the trainers and the magnificence of the horses are deeply moving to me.
@kittenxxleanne Thanks for your comment. I'm happy to hear from you and to learn that Sea Stack is retired and that you are okay. It was quite a fall. I was right there on the sidelines. Is Sea Stack a brood mare? or someone's riding horse? She had a lot of heart. I hope your career is going well.
Goodness. There's even more of your brilliant analysis. Thank you. You have changed my life. I love the words "bluffer" and "bullshitter." It must be wonderful to know as much as you do and to be superior to so many other people.
I admired that mare. She ran and jumped her heart out. I often cry when I see horses race. The effort is incredible and beautiful. To me, horse racing is a metaphor for the incredible effort it takes for living a good life, a life of integrity.
Thank you for your kinds words. You are a true gentleman. May riches rain upon you. If you read the comments you will see the jockey saw the video and told me her name. Ireland needs more gentleman like you.
Respect is the word, all right. I just watched the Kentucky Derby on TV. I almost cried at the horse's effort and the horse's heart and the jockey's, too. Orb won and won clearly and cleanly.
You sound like a really nice person. I bet it's fun to walk in the woods with you and admire the trees and the bluebells in the spring. I hope you are as articulate with other people as you are with me.
"The Sligo Races take place outside of Sligo Town in County Sligo, Ireland." That is the exact quote. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to show you what I really said.
Thank you for your literate and wise comment. Ireland is full of literary geniuses and humanitarians. With empathy like yours, the world is bound to become a better place.
I am impressed with your command of the English language. The Irish say: "The English gave us a language, and we showed them how to use it." You should be proud.
Thank you, Teddybear. You earned the title "sweet." Are you this sweet to everyone? Are you this sweet to yourself? Good luck spreading the sweetness.
Yes, I didn't do such a great job with narration. It's one of the first videos I narrated, but if you can get past it, the story is compelling.
Yes. I'm glad he stayed with her, too. He commented on the video a year or so ago. He said the mare's name is Sea Stack. She is now retired.
The video is a tribute to this horse and the qualities of horses like these--put in your best effort--really work at something.
Check out the Grand National tomorrow in Aintree, England (16.15 GMT). 4.5 miles, 30 huge jumps (in no way are they hurdles). Spectacular!!
It's true Jane. This happens all the time. 2.5 miles is not a particularly long race. About average during the jump season.
Thanks. The Grand National is quite a race. Imagine the efforts of the horses and jockeys--and the trainers.
I hope that you are as kind to others as you are to me. I imagine that you are a happy person, too.
A courageous horse makes an enormous effort. I admire any living being who tries hard.
Yes, she was exhausted, but she got up and walked away. Horses have a lot of heart.
Thank you. Horses are incredible. I'm happy to know you appreciate them, too.
glad to hear that she was okay in the end, its always so sad to see a good horse die
Thank you for your words of wisdom. You are most kind to share.
What kind remarks. Thank you for your brilliant insight.
Thanks for an insightful comment. You are most kind.
Your kindness is exceeded only by your good looks.
I'm glad that the jockeys decided to look at the jump where that horse fell and decided to turn around I know that the horse did not die or she was not put down but that's a thing that the crowd does not want to see you again especially if they didn't know what was happening with that horse poor horse
The horses are great and the effort they make is inspiring. I think there could be more thought put into horse and jockey safety. When people are young, they laugh at injuries. It's only when they are older that they realize what's happened to them. Any time a horse dies or has a serious injury is a tragedy that we have to think about how to prevent. Lessen risks for horses and riders even when the people involved think risks are exciting and part of the game.
Thank you. The comments teach me a lot about how some people decide what I intend with this video without actually paying attention to what I say and what the horse went through. It's hard to communicate with some people as a result.I could have modulated my voice. I know that. It's amazing that others call me names because of it. I worry about their personal lives. How do they treat people they have power over? They have no power over me.
The length of the races in Ireland are amazing to me. I am in awe of the horses and the riders to have the kind of stamina and grit that they do. In the states, a mile and a half is unusual and a mile and an eighth is usual. This is with no hurdles. I don't think we even have hurdle races. I love being able to be so close to the track at Sligo. I'd love to see that horse and jockey again.
I noted in the video that the green sheet was a screen. I can't correct the video and replace it because youtube does not allow it. The same video is on youtube under another url and the name of the screen is correct. I left the other one up because so many people view it. I actually know a lot about horses. When I was a child, a horse I loved was put down at the track. Sadie Cummings.
Thanks. I assume you're responding to my responses to rude comments. They are right that I'm not a very good narrator in the video. It is one of my first. I object when people tell me to shut up and worse. I think it's important to point out how rude they are and that they hide behind false names. Those who say I don't know how morse racing are wrong. I'm amused that many people come to conclusions but don't bother with evidence.
Don't you have anything else to do but insist that you are right? OK. You are right. You are brilliant. You know everything. You are always right. You have great insight. The world needs to hear much more from you. You are perfection incarnate. Is that enough praise and recognition for you? Have you ever heard that we all are deeply flawed human beings? Maybe you are the exception.
You have a total commitment to rudeness and disrespect. Good luck with it. You must be an outstanding friend and companion. I imagine people follow you down the street because they want to be with you. Have you thought about giving lessons on rudeness and disrespect? Have you heard about the Golden Rule--or is that too subtle for you--or too much of a stretch for what could be your rigid thinking? You can stop emailing me. Hope springs eternal that I can help you from being so mean.
This is what someone wrote to me. What is wrong with the people commenting here?
Although the poster may not be an expert in racing, there's no need to insult her! She made this video because she was inspired by the mare's effort and appears to love horses. The narrator never pretends to be an horse expert, nor does she insult racing.
All she wanted to do is share a story. She doesn't have to know the ins-and-outs of racing to appreciate the beauty of horses.
Yes, it was wonderful to see the mare get up.I did not mention cruelty to horses. Horses are strong animals. If well conditioned, they can run a long way. I'm sorry that you got on your high horse so quickly when you read things into what I said. I admire that horse and admire any creature who tries hard, as Sea Stack did. I'm also glad the jockey was uninjured.
I agree that there is a lot of cruelty to horses. If I thought Irish horse racing was cruel, I would not go. I admire heart.
I love it when people think it is okay to say things like this. How do you like people to treat you? Have you ever heard of respect? Do you like putting others down so you can feel smug and superior? it doesn't work with me because I'm a grownup but when you say things like this to some people you really hurt them. Is that your intention? Isn't the world sad enough? Do you really want to add to the sadness. Think about it.
Record-keeping of horse and jockey deaths and injuries are important. Racing is a wonderful sport, but safety has to be first. I teach social work and the mantra is safety first. This is true for all living beings. Horses are special to me but all of life is precious and is more important than money, status, power, attention, etc.
Thanks for you kind words and brilliant analysis. The use of the term "sick freak" is particularly enlightening. When you write a novel along this line, you are sure to win the Booker. People who think she looks thin may not understand what a conditioned race horse looks like, but why do you act superior and come across as cruel?
I don't know if she's underfed. Many thoroughbreds are all muscle and look like greyhounds. I imagine she gets beetroot everyday and may even be on pasture. When you see the horses, they look as if they are in great condition--shiny coats and eyes, spring to the steps, and interest in what is around them.
This message is more constructive. Thank you. My point is a horse went down. She got up, and she was fine. Some people say she is still racing and others say she is retired. I was awestruck. I have had horses for many years and grew up with them. I have relationships with horses and they with me. Some people don't understand that. There are many points of view about horses.
Some people are so mean that after a while it's foolish to stay in touch with them. You are that mean. I hope you learn how to respect others. You seem to enjoy hurting others. That is the definition of a sadist, a psychopath, and a person who is unhappy and who shoots himself in the foot. Good luck to you, lad. You need an attitude and belief adjustment.
Has anyone informed you that your words are abusive? I can't understand how people like you can say such things to other people. I hope you are a hermit, high on a mountain where the only person you can hurt is yourself. Didn't your mother tell you about the golden rule? What is going on in your head? Life is hard enough without your terrible, cruel words.
Thank you for your insightful comment. The evidence mounts. The world IS full of sweet people who have endearing names for others. I wonder what names you call your children, your romantic partners, your mother, your father, your dog, and your cat. Spread the sweetness. There can't be too much of it in this world.
So you don't have a girlfriend? Sorry. Heat and kitchen? You don't know the saying--your mind isn't subtle enough? Think about the saying. You might learn something. Think about what respect means. Hint: you are disrespecting me and the horse and the idea behind the video. I hope you can grow and change.
German--even better. You are also a mind reader and know how much I know about horse racing. I galloped race horses before your parents ever met. I assume you have parents and did not arrive under a cabbage. No? Your parents did not teach you respect. Nor do you seem to want to respect others. Go for it. Be a pain in the neck. You're good at it.
Actually, I do know something about racing. I worked on a thoroughbred racing farm for three years. I backed the yearlings just before they turned two and excercised the horses when they were home from the track. One of my favorite memories is galloping Sadie Cummings, a thoroughbred mare, down the mile-long beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island, USA.
@colley2k7
Thanks for the info. I was at the races a few years ago when a horse was put down. The horse was far away from the viewing area, but now that you say it, the screen was there, too. Your information makes the video even more dramatic. Too bad I can't edit this video and replace the present one, but youtube does not allow that.
Good points. I wonder why you are so angry. I imagine the jockey thought all of that. I imagine he was concerned for the horse. He responded to the video, and he wasn't offended a bit. He told me the mare is now retired and her name is Sea Stack. She is a great horse.
If you don't want to hear from me, stop emailing me. Don't forget to study the meaning of the word respect. Also, you might want to reflect on your desire to control other people. Best of luck. The world needs people who respect others and don't enjoy abusing others.
Thanks for your insightful comments. You are brilliant. I really like how you read my mind and tell me what I think. It's great when men know so much about women they decide what women think and feel. Good luck with your relationships. I'm sure you are happy in your love life.
Hi. Yes, thanks for your comment. I agree that horses can run for a long time when conditioned. The track was very wet that day and probably heavy going for all of the horses. When she fell, she may have driven the wind right out of her. She actually looked good going around that track twice.
Hi, Magoo. It's a Yankee with Irish roots. I'm Jane Gilgun. I go to the Sligo Races every year--or have for the past five. I'm the narrator who still needs a bit more practice. I could not come up with a lyrical Irish voice. Some Irish people seem to sing when they talk.
@jgilgun Good luck with your riding career. I wish you were going to ride in the Sligo Races. I would place a bet on your horse! Yes, one of the horses I used to ride when I was quite young was a racehorse who broke her leg at the track and had to be put down. Very hard.
That's where we push back. The lives of horses and jockeys have to be first. After that, owners and trainers can chase money, status, fancy clothes, fancy houses and property, fancy men and women, jewelry, world travel, fame, and famous friends.
Thank you for your words of wisdom. it must be wonderful to be an expert on all Americans. Do you think all French people are alike? How about the Chinese? The Iranians. Keep on thinking so well. The world needs more minds like yours.
Hi. what a relief. You care about the horse. I think she was out of it for a few minutes. The vets were ready to put her down until they saw she wanted to get up. When she slipped and fell, she may have hit herself so that the wind was knocked out of her.
awww you poor girl.
Do you know how to spell assume? I wish you had heard what I actually said. What I hear from you is what you assumed I said. Do you hold yourself to the same standards you hold me? Do you misinterpret yourself? I hope not.
I appreciate your comments. You show a lot of compassion and insight. Are you this kind to friends and family? How about children? You mistake cruelty for humor. Best of luck. May the wind always be at your back.
Self-deception is a great defense. You are great at self-deception. Your comments are mean. It's fun for you to put others down. Now, tell me about the crowds who follow you around. Have you heard the word "bully?"
Yes. I realized later that's what the screen is for. I agree--the jockey took quite a fall. Someone said the mare's name is Sea Stack and she now is retired. I hope she is doing well. She has a great heart.
Thank you. I had an uncle who's nickname was Jellybean. We even called him Uncle Jellybean when we were kids. I don't think we called him that to his face, but we didn't think too much about the name.
So, you knew the horse? Is she still alive? My hope is she is raising a foal somewhere in Sligo or is a well cared-for riding horse, maybe doing some jumps once in a while and that she is sound.
Love is the active promotion of the welfare of others. You don't measure up. I hope you are kind to children and other adults. You sure have a foul mouth and a mean attitude. You must be unhappy.
What a guy. When did you stop beating your girlfriend or wife? Maybe not physically but psychologically? Don't forget--you contacted me. If you don't like the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Thank you for your thoughts. Like so many horses, she is magnificent in her courage and in her looks. Yes, she was winded, and she got up. I would not have shown the video if she had not.
Yes, she was tired. She was quite muscular. Many of the horses are full of muscle and lean. I think she hadn't been conditioned for the very wet turf. It was treacherous that day.
thanks for your kind and insightful comments. You have transformed my understanding of the world. I wonder if you could explain further the sources of your kindness and insight.
I'm sorry to hear that. Each little bit of hostility adds to bad karma and becomes part of justification for hurting others and doing what you want without caring about consequences.
I do think we have to take good care of the horses and jockeys and don't put them to unnecessary risk. There is something called common sense and making sure of reasonable safety.
Thanks, Stephen. That's just how I feel. My heart rate goes up when "they're off" and when they jump those hurdles at a gallop. I can't wait for the races this year.
Would you mind elaborating? Where are the lies? What does living in Sligo have to do with this video? Did you see the race? Do you remember it? Share your wisdom, please.
Thanks for your opinion. You're brilliant and kind. Great insight. It;s nice to hide behind a false name. Stand up for your opinions. That's the man. You have great craic.
Where do you get the idea that you can call people names? What you call others is what you think of yourself. Who called you a spastic? What other names did people call you?
Yes, the mare has a lot of heart. I don't know how talented a runner she was. She may be raising a foal right now, at least I hope. She could be someone's riding horse.
You can see I don't like it when people assume what I think and feel. How do you spell assume? Ass out of you and ass out of me. Guess what? I am not the ass here.
She is in peak "racing condition". She's kept on special diet and exercised often (all racing thoroughbreds are). They are young athletes, just like our own human athletes. Have you ever seen a top performing athlete? They are muscle-bound and lean, with no excess fat or weight on them. Its the same with race horses. When she retires (if she does), she will fill out more. But this is normal for a racehorse :)
2 and a half miles is not that long a race, the grand national is 4 miles and 3 furlongs, with much higher fences than the hurdles you showed in your video and the run in would not have been nearly as long. 2 and a half miles is really not that bad, the minimum NH distance is 2 miles, so 4 extra furlongs is really fairly short! If your point was the horse overcoming adversity, then it could have been better achieved by detailing a story about a horse overcoming injury
Sorry Jane, I could have been far more constructive. I just dont get the point that you are trying to make here? Are you trying to say that the race is cruel? You have actually made several factually incorrect statements.Notably, that the distance of 2.5miles is extreme -the minimum distance is 2 miles in NH racing - and that the crowd want the jockey to " comfort the mare?! " -the crowd are clearly happy that the mare is fine, most racegoers want horses to be safe. The mare was winded - end of!
The owner still runs this horse, not been shot LOL !
A lot of owners love the challenge of a horse that is useless, not at all cut throat as it seems. And Trainers learn a lot more about horses when they are crap, or tempermental !
It's a Tempermental, cheeky horse, It keeps un-seating it's riders or pulling up. Just needs to know it's Jockey or wear blinkers. The Jockey will probably need to become friends with this horse to get anything out of it.
irishracingcom/v5horseinfo?prt=273338
If it was not good enough for racing they usually put them to grass and use them to train with other horses in the stable it belongs to, Don't listen to silly Ridgeback42, It's not true that they shoot horses like that. Only if they are ill, a very last resort !
It just means that horse can't do that distance. They usually try them in smaller, easier races, where it has more chance to get place money. A horse can go years without winning anything, then suddenly start winning.
"the jockey is probably upset that they didn't finish the race"??? WTF!!! how you say that makes it appear as though the jockey doesn't care a bit for his horse.Did the jockey personally tell you that? How do you know what is going through that jockeys head? Maybe that jockey is injured, shaken up, wanting to get out of the way so as not to hinder other riders and possibly cause more accidents.
What is wrong with the people commenting here?
Although the poster may not be an expert in racing, there's no need to insult her! She made this video because she was inspired by the mare's effort and appears to love horses. The narrator never pretends to be an horse racing expert, nor does she insult racing.
All she wanted to do is share a story. She doesn't have to know the ins-and-outs of racing to appreciate the beauty of horses.
2 1/2 miles in not a long race, its actually relitavely short over fences. the longest race in England is the Grand National at 4miles 4furlongs.
the jockey did right to allow the horse time to get up. i've watched clips of rodeo riders kicking, hitting and shocking horses and cattle to make them move when they're clearly injured. This mare wasn't hurt, just winded and needed her breath back, it's pretty common.
horses are trained and bred to have either stamina, speed or both.
Considering what American rodeo animals go through I wonder how you have the cheek to judge Irish racing. I have no recollection of any of ours going live to slaughter with broken legs or spinal injuries.
Horses do not see another on the ground and think what you narrate. If you knew anything about horses, unless they were a companion of theirs, they do not consider the other at all.
It was nice to see her get up of course but how about you dictate about cruelty within your own country.
Thanks, Shane. Another brilliant comment in a long list of brilliant comments. Welcome to the club of brilliant and also the club for those with the gift of gab.
She got up, which was wonderful. I didn't see the jockey laughing. I will look again. I would think that the jockey was shaken up. Falling can be dangerous.
So the answer is yes the death rate is still really high ? Have a look on the Animal Aid UK facebook page and look for racehorse deathwatch its unbelievable how many horses get there legs necks or backs snapped in National Hunt,I don't there is one for Ireland as they try to hide the true numbers that get killed.
@Jane Gilgun, how bad is the fatality rate now on the Irish National Hunt track ? I like a bet on the horses but stopped betting on NH due to the massive death rate of horses over the jumps,I know its racing and accidents are always gonna happen but the amount is WAAAAY to high,Ireland was worse and I'm wondering if its still as bad ?
The horse was most likely just winded... And the screen is not so the spectators cant see a horse being shot, it is to shield the horse from its surroundings to try and calm it and for the vet to administer aid, or euthanize, in private, without all the nosy people waiting to see if they can see a horse being shot...
And oh, really? is sligo in Ireland??
Ex racers in Ireland dont have a hope in hell... pretty much goes for the rest of the world really. Theres a small minority that go on to lead a ridden life, or manage to find there way into a ex racehorse rehab, sadly theres far to many bred to live a happy ever after. They are merely machines, and disposed of when no longer needed ( no longer making money)
thanks. Yes to all that you said. The horses are alert, muscled, and bright-eyed, usually clipped with designs on them. Someone takes good care of them.
Are you saying that you have developed some empathy and want to promote the well-being of others? I wonder why you call me a lad. I'm a grown woman.
Such conjecture here...How on earth would you know what the jockeys are saying to each other? You're going by stills and photos, not video evidence. Horses can easily run 2.5 miles. Humans run entire marathons without dying every day. Jockeys show more care for horses than silly little people like you sitting at home making videos. What even is the purpose of this?
Name calling? Now that is kindness and a conversation starter. I was a few feet from the horses and jockeys. I heard the jockeys talking to each other. I reported what they said to each other. Conjecture? Whose?
The horse was put down later, even though she was healthy. Fair?
Simon Edmonds Thank you for your knowledgeable comments. You are very good at taking other people's inventories.
Jane Gilgun I'm just using facts to back up what I'm saying instead of making wild assumptions.
Yeh good too see it get up, it ran it's ;last 7 races with the same jockey, looks as though the jockey is the owner relative now. This means they see it has speed but they need to calm it down a bit, it un seated rider in about 7 races LOL !
Really moody horse, haha mind of it's own !
Not only do you know what the injured horse is thinking, you knows what the jockey is thinking, what every horse passing by is thinking and what the entire fuckin crowd is thinking. Such agreat imagination but ultimately complete bullshit. You should be narrating Thomas The Tank Engine.
This jump is not a problem .... it's hardly The Chair ..... it's not even a fence .... it's only a hurdle ffs ..... and everybody loves Sligo but this narrator enunciates the name as if it was Bergen Belsen ..... I'd love to hear her commentate on Crufts ( that byword for animal cruelty ).
