Poor Stanley. Everything was out of his control. I can't help but feel sympathy for him. First he is improperly gauged, then a supernatural force hijacks him, and the blame is always placed on him. I personally think that he's right when he tells Duke everyone loves him just for his name which he did nothing to earn, and as we all know, he's right yet again when he predicts that the manager's poor judgment will result in the railway's closure. Stanley's story reminds me a lot of Henry's, always being given the short end of the stick, but unlike Henry, Stanley would not get his happy ending... well, not as far as we know.
Although the yellow engine from the previous story didn't appear here, I have a feeling this may tie back to him in some way.
With all that aside, congratulations on 10K, Rheneas!

Makes me wonder... in the very early days, people were afraid of steam engines. Some even called them demonic, and campaigned against them. In 'Very Old Engines' as Neil is pulling Skarloey away, we see a woman with her hands to her cheeks, turning away from them in fright. I wonder if this man was someone who, in life, fought against the railway, and is still seeking to stop them from beyond the grave...

    • @flashstudiosguy
      @flashstudiosguy Год назад +11

Yeah, I could never understand that frame of mentality, I mean, what the Hell (no pun intended) has the invention of steam locomotion got to do with Demons? If God "creates all" and "has great plans for each of us", then surely this "Work of the Devil" as you call it, is actually a creation of God, except he told the bloke who built it to do it for him?
That's like saying we shouldn't buy Bibles unless there's proof God owns the Book Shop.

@@flashstudiosguy Obviously, I'm not one to say given how far removed I am from that time period. But my guess is that due to how new they were and that there just wasn't anything like it, not to mention the idea of a mechanical automaton running on fire, imitating a horse would seem strange at first. Remember, this was when horses and carts were used. The only other man made transportation types around then that I can think of are ships and the velocipede (bike) which was also literally just invented around the same time. I'd maybe compare it to how people act towards AI and artists? Not trying to make a point, but the idea of replacing something natural with a machine would seem strange, wouldn't it? Especially if in this universe, the machine started talking back.

Some people are always afraid of anything new or 'different', particularly if it is beyond their ability to understand it. Steam engines were new, noisy and seemingly uncontrollable forces which threatened major change to the long established 'normal order' of society in Britain and that was why they were hated at first. America, a very young country in comparison, sw their potential for nation building, and reacted differently.

@@flashstudiosguythis kinda fits my head canon of Thomas lore which is that humans don't really see engines as sentient beings but just machinery and possibly for some just view their sentience as a hindrance and would rather ignore them when situations call for it.

Honestly, I feel like the manager was behind all of this to begin with. It makes too much sense:
      - Manager finds out that Stanley wasn't properly gauged.
      - Doesn't bother to fix him.
      - Accidents happen because of Stanley's bad gauging.
      - Manager blames Stanley for something he has no control over.
      - Stanley continues to have accidents despite multiple reprimands and even punishments.
At that point, the manager was probably fed up with Stanley and wanted an excuse to get rid of him, but also didn't want to be called out for refusing to do critical maintenance work on one of his engines. So he likely set up multiple severe accidents to make an excuse to basically get rid of him in a way where he would never be able to reveal the truth of what happened.

I have an idea for a story: Thomas has been around for well over a hundred years and is happy to be on Sodor with all his friends. However he can't help but wonder what the next hundred years will bring and it worries him. One night he has a nightmare about it. In his dream it is 2123. By this time the Hatt family had died off with the last Hatt Edmond Topham Hatt passing away unmarried and with no kids, nieces, nephews, cousins or siblings to take over the railway. The new manager is not so nice and wants a more modern railway. and most people are not as interested in the historic engines as they were before. One by one, Thomas's friends get scrapped till it's just him alone. Eventually Thomas has an accident and is taken to the scrap yard. Just as he is about to be scrapped , Thomas wakes up screaming and starts to cry. When Edward asks what's wrong, Thomas tells him and the other engines about his nightmare as well as his worries. Edward comforts him saying the future is not for ones to see and shouldn't worry about it, but just to enjoy the present and cherish each day. Eventually Thomas calms down and stops worrying about the future

Somehow, the Manager strikes me as the type who'd disbelieve something, even if you repeatedly slammed his face up against the wall the evidence is pinned to...

Quite a good story - again, I like the quality of the graphics, their general accuracy and Stanley's characterisation. They're certainly more adult in these tales. And I feel sorry for Stanley in a way - is his name Stanley because he's a Baldwin, incidentally? The ROD tanks were notoriously rough riding engines due to poor balance and weight distribution in reality - some of the crews on Welsh lines that acquired them after 1918 hated them - but he's very much an awkward and beligerent character. Has he got PTSD from his time in Flanders?

Manager: "I don't know what's wrong with you, Stanley"
Hm, I don't know, perhaps it's the fact that you're such a cheap-ass who couldn't be bothered to regauge an engine that's obviously out of gauge?
Actually, this gives me a theory - the "ghost" was the manager of the MSR himself, who was trying to make an excuse to get rid of an engine he didn't want to properly maintain.

This story, I have to say, is really shocking. From what I could see, Stanley's arrogance and rude behavior was because he was depressed that he had design flaws due to a rushed job. That other engine Smudger was a real jerk but Stanley here was plagued with bad luck nonstop! As for who the hell was the presence that led to this, he's a troublemaker and a little evil too! My first theory is that he's the spirit of a former railway controller who wanted to punish Stanley for his incompetence and teach him a lesson, which is quite a bit heartless, spiteful and cruel, OR.....well, since hearing that bizarre language The Yellow Engine was saying is a lot deeper and darker. If that man had something to do with that Yellow Engine and Bert, then it seems something VERY sinister is going on in Sodor this year. Almost like it's the work of the trickster demons Mephistopheles, Loki, a soucouyant or even IT!
Despite all of this, I hope nothing bad happens to Stanley and may Jennings rest in peace.

This story just pisses me off for Stanley ngl. He never meant to cause any of these accidents, he just had the worst luck in the world. You'd think that after awhile they'd wonder why he keeps derailing n stuff, but noooo they just blame him for everything. If I was Stanley, I would've thrown on the throttle and made myself leave the entire railway after all of that. Yes, he's an engine and couldn't make himself stop if he wanted to, but he'd eventually get far enough away from the railway that way. Like holy shit, he was a bit grumpy i guess, but that shouldn't warrant what they did to him...
