This isn't "a bridge" it's a train track. Raising the bridge might require fixing a mile of train track on either side so the train can go over the hump smoothly. Imagine you're a small town mayor trying to get elected. Do you want to spend a few million dollars of lobbyist money raising a bridge, or do you want to spend that on reelection ads that can vaguely promise to look at this next term?

With all the safety measures and signs, 11’8+8 is a fairy that teaches lessons to people that aren’t paying attention. This bridge (if it hasn’t been changed in 6 years) is an ogre that drags you away into the night if you stray too close.

Indeed. Unlike the 11Foot8(+8) bridge, this one doesn’t have a separate guard to protect the bridge against impacts-the bridge itself is absolutely tanking the full brunt of the crashes.
Granted, this seems to be a slower road than that of the Can Opener. Impressive engineering regardless.
The engineers were probably far more concerned with the massive weight of the trains it was designed to hold, not the tiny cars of back in the day

In every reasonable country, a few meters before the bridge, there would be a frame with chains hanging vertically to about 20cm (i.e. ~8 Bananas) or so below the hight of the bridge (or something similar).
This one doesn't function as neatly as the Can Opener. Here, it's like the whole truck explodes.

Not the first time for a fire truck.
Boston, which is about 12 miles from this Westwood location has several other bridges under 11' clearance. the worst offenders along Storrow Drive. a multi lane roadway running alongside the Charles River going into the city from the west. Boston has a huge student population and these bridges eat several rental trucks every term.
The funniest though was when the Boston Fire Department had just taken delivery of a new, million dollar plus super ladder fire truck. They took it for a parade around the city a lunch hour, showing it off, and then, for some reason never explained, turned onto Storrow Drive.
Estimates were they were doing 30mph when 14' tall fire truck went under the 10' clearance overpass.
It wasn't pretty.

@@user-ip9ru1ca1t The ladder was forced down into the truck, meaning the roof is probably warped, meaning the whole roof and ladder needs to be replaced. Insurance company could easily total it. My grandmother had a tree limb crush the roof of her car, only the roof was damaged, but the insurance company still totaled the whole car.
Insurance typically only totals a vehicle if it's either completely irreparable or if the cost of the repairs exceeds the vehicles estimated value. A ding in the roof and a bent ladder isn't going to break the bank on a fire truck repair.

We have one in Syracuse in which the clearance is okay, but there's a dip, so once in a while a long truck gets under it, but when the front of the truck starts to go uphill and the body is under the bridge, it gets wedged.

1:01 it took me a couple of rewatches to realize what happened. The asphalt is laid fresh without painted lines and the curb is obscured by the bridge’s shadow. For a moment, I thought the bridge was so hungry for a crash that it magnetized the car!

Well, you know if you hit a curb all you have to do is keep the wheel straight and this accident could've been avoided, The driver just panicked and overcorrected the wheel so they veered into oncoming. Hitting the curb isn't what caused the accident, it's just that this driver wasn't experienced in hitting curbs. I hit curbs all the time but my car never goes flying in the wrong direction like that.
I had to rewatch it, because the first time it looked like he just randomly decided to veer into oncoming traffic. 😳😅
@@Marsalien100 In both cases, the car hitting the curb doesn't show any steering angle. The curb simply deflected the car across the road. And that curb is quite high above the raod surface, thus most likely will yank the wheel out of the driver's hands. At least. It might also severely damage your wheel and/or suspension.

That sign has small lettering and is rather poor at grabbing anyone's attention. The least that town can do is to install a larger sign with flashers. It's not like it's that tough to do. There are plenty of signs, nowadays, that flash your speed limit as you approach the sign. Something like that could easily be done. Or, maybe, the town just doesn't give a cr_p.

Effect of fire on reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete is scary. Bunch of changes to the material affecting stability.
We have a place here, four bridges next to each other, used by maybe a million of people per day who are commuting by train. There is a highway running somewhat parallel, crossing below those bridges, that's where hundreds of thousands of people per day commute by car.
A drunk truck driver on the highway caused an accident, his cargo (I think it was fuel) caught fire, destroyed one and heavily damaged two other bridges. Also destroyed that part of the highway of course, but that's the smaller part of the damage. Took a few weeks to clear and build some temporary bridges, the long-term replacements will be ready in a few years (as they want to keep the interruptions as short as possible).
Of course the driver fled, and was caught only a year later when he tried to leave the country. Got a 21 month sentence, but whether he has a job again now, no idea. Another life destroyed by alcohol, but of course this drug is hardly regulated as drinking is deeply ingrained in our culture.

They always do, I did training with our local FD and they said never run never rush. So there trained to walk and do everything slowly
According to another video the truck was full of lobster (7'000 lbs)... So they were waiting for that to roast...?
I guess, the guy at the top was also a grill-master making sure the lobsters ware roasted properly and without the foam to spoil the taste...
They were not even ready.... The had to go back to the truck for their jackets..... What if the driver was trapped, they would have had seconds to get the hose working before fire got him and the were just walking.... Shoddy.

We have one here in New York called the Glenville Bridge and the Maple Street Bridge. In fact, both bridges are on the same traffic circle, perpendicular to each other.
There’s something like this near where I live, but because it’s England, my town calls it the Double Decker Decapitator.
The buses that are tall get absolutely decapitated if they try to use it as a shortcut because they are running late.
Obviously their original routes is to go round, but some try to get their passengers killed I guess.

an update for everyone: this bridge was replaced about 2.5 years ago. The new bridge is 13.5' tall (it was 10.5' in this video) and there are far less accidents now a days. It was also a very narrow opening so you could barely get two sedans passing each other without it feeling like you were going to crash together. I do miss seeing all the truck crashes, though - it was entertaining!

As a Class A truck driver it is up to you to study the road that you're about to be on map out where you're headed they sell maps that show where low bridges are weight limits on Bridges are at and everything like that you're supposed to have a Trucker's GPS that avoids stuff like that and in a little truck like that it wouldn't be nothing to get around that so they did it to themselves granted they were probably new but that's a personal problem in the eyes of your company cuz when your a commercial driver all responsibilities is on the driver to safely commute to where he needs to be and the company is not held liable for any wrecks or mistake that you made you are healed 100% accountable

The 11foot8 is actually 11 foot 10 I think, they redid the road and didn't updated the sign, probably because they are not required and it's expensive, plus it leave a safety margin, plus it allow that if they resurface they don't need to change the sign again...
The 11foot8 also have a flat bar, while this one seems to have more of a triangle, so more of a cutting edge than a crushing surface. Plus this one is lower. The roof of a truck is relativelly strong since there is a corner there which add some rigidity. This isn't there if you hit lower...
It seems that a lot more effort has gone into making the 11'8'' one idiot-proof, which is why crashes there these days are less spectacular. It is likely that back in the days similar scenes were unfolding in NC too.

The 11foot8 bridge that's mentioned in the comments tried that and they STILL hit the damned bridge. Then they added a sign that lights up and says "TOO HIGH, TURN NOW" when your truck is too high and people STILL hit the damn bridge. People are just hopeless.
