A few words about this bridge: The bridge was built before the height standards; it's grandfathered in from a legal perspective. The road cannot be lowered because of the sewer line running under it, and the bridge cannot be raised because it would be too disruptive to the trains running over it. In other words, it's stuck that way. If you're gonna whine about it, try whining about the drivers who are too f'in stupid to read the signs.
***** Jim Heckel any bullshit excuse to give the government a free pass for the horrible damages they cause will do for you, right?
Michiel Van Kets Here you blame the government (which one b t w?) for causing damage. What you wrote in a few other remarks sounds a bit in the libertarian vein, yet all of a sudden in the case of this privately owned bridge (property of the 100% commercial Norfolk Southern Railroad Company) you seem to find that the government is at fault for not intervening. Do you mean that now the authorities SHOULD force a private company to rebuild their property at their own cost, but that otherwise all the government does is causing damage?
I can't help feeling your views on "government" make your statements a bit contradictory...
mateuszmattias whatever man ... how you manage to think that supporting a bunch of psychopaths is a good idea ... I'm not going to argue with you;' obviously you don't care about right or wrong, all you care about is avoiding your own brain from functioning properly ... shame is an unpleasant feelings, but a very positive one; it's how we learn!
embrace the shame instead of betraying yourself!
Michiel Van Kets I don't know why you insult me, you don't know anything about my intellectual capacities; all I pointed out was that I think your're being a bit self-contradictory.
Either way, I'm not a fan of too extensive governemt in any way, but if you basically makes a case that if authorities do this they're wrong, if they do that they're wrong, and if they don't do anything they're wrong too, then I think your case loses a bit in credibility. That's all.
mateuszmattias you're just an ordinary liar ... you're talking as iof none of those accidents have happened; fucking coward!
that's why there's so much shit in the wolrd, because most people are like you; willing to lie to protect the fucking idiot in government
yes, of course it's wrong; look at the fucking video!
The RV ones with just the air-conditioning getting ripped off are so satisfying. It's like smoothing the icing on top of a cake with a spatula.
The second hay truck sees the first one get shaved, still proceeds thinking it won't happen to him.
Yes, this one is very funny lol
When I'm depressed, i always come to this video

Alaina O We have a word for it: Schadenfreude.
I love the ones that just skim the bridge. Like, they're 11 foot 7.9999999999999 inches.
The actual clearance is 11 feet 10.8 inches, to allow for the required 2.5 inch safety margin. Anything that's actually 11 feet 8 inches will get through with no problem.
Adam Ahmed Alright then, Keaton and I like the ones that are 11 feet 10.79999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 inches.
@Adam And that's what all those truckers though too ;)
Keaton Smith thts probably because the trucks were loaded, weighing the chassis down, hence lowering the truck slightly
That would mean they're .1 inch abode the clearance, not below
I love how those people decided to give up air conditioning. That's such an environmentally friendly gesture!
This never gets old.
Penske, Ryder, Enterprise and every local moving company should show this compilation to EVERY SINGLE DRIVER.
But then, we would be sad and the bridge beam would starve.
😂🤔😞
There not Penske material 😊
Is the Ryder company still able to insure its vehicles ?
haha the lady walking on the left at 2:51 is like, "yeah, i see this shit everyday..."
Bridge: What you want, fam?
Truck: Just a little off the top
All these rv drivers are going to be really sorry when they get to the next campground and realize they tore off their A/C units.
I know right they're not even stopping
The AC units are my favorite parts of these videos lol. Even more so than the ones that completely tear off the roofs.

3:21 that must have been terrifying getting lifted that far up in the air!
I've seen videos of this bridge for a very long time, I'm sure this bridge has been around the internet twice. But as I watch this video and other compilations like it, I find that I'm amazed at two things; 1. How frequently this happens and 2. I'm always entertained by it. It's the same video every time and it never gets old.
Same here. I'd always make 5-7 mins to watch/rewatch the can opener doing its thing.
3:55 Two men and NO truck.

I beg to differ. That bridge will fucking crumble soon from all those times it's gotten mashed into. Once that finally happens, that'll be great.

@Manofsteel Klingt verlockend (sounds great) ! **lol**
Amazing that this bridge is a century old! For those criticizing this bridge's height, remember that back in the WWI and WWII era, the average box truck and early semi- truck trailers were under 10 feet tall from tire bottom to roof.
they should either close off that road or build a new bridge that's high enough this time. the bridge being as old as it was, was still no excuse for all those accidents happening there.
steve Kos if your truck is too tall go around lol.
*"_they should either close off that road_ or build a new bridge that's high enough"*
So, because SOME people are idiots, EVERYONE has to be inconvenienced? That's some logicking you're doin' there...
Steve, the catch is that since the bridge belongs to the railroad company, they would be expected to pay for it, which is not a fair shot. Add to that, with today's bueracracy there would have be an environmental impact study, inspections, and the city would have to (at various times) shut down that street as the bridge goes up. This is why in so many communities the railroads (viewed as the bad guys in these cases) won't change anything unless absolutely "no choice" necessary. Even paint stripping and repainting a steel girder bridge is ridiculously expensive now. As far as the railroad here is concerned this bridge functions just fine, so the railroad has no reason to spend the six or seven dollar figure to replace it. Add to that the line, which is active would have to close down temporarily.

How to make your trailer a convertible😂😂

I love how the RV just keeps on driving as if nothing happened.
That's a lot of good peels! The AC removal system is awesome too. :-)
When I was a truck driver I delivered very close to where the camera is located, I drove an 18 wheeler. What is so amazing about this is this low clearance is really well marked. I can understand the folks that may not drive tall trucks all the time, but thoes truckers have no excuse.

Lol there are 2 bright yellow signs saying how high it is... even me, a european who is not used to measure things in body parts know this is not high enough for any of these trucks xD
lamebubblesflysohigh Lol, measuring in body parts
The foot is not based on a body part despite the name. However, measuring out 100 square feet is much easier if you are NOT looking for precision by using my shoe and walking out 10 by 10 as opposed to something like square meters.
@@richardthomas5362 not really. You can use same technique for metres. 3 foots are circa meter.
@@lamebubblesflysohigh It sounds like another calculation which can complicate things, especially if you or someone else are not blessed with big floppy feet like me. To each his own, I guess.
I really appreciate RUclips videos which use BOTH measurements so they can be equally comprehensible to everyone. Some of the non-American made videos will verbalize the metric during their presentation but put the American measurement somewhere on the video, which I find very helpful. Some presumably American made videos do the same think in reverse, which is fine with me.
To be fair, in these 11ft-8in videos I don't think much about the exact height, I just watch the destruction :)
"Body parts" -- that's good :-)
Yeah, the Yanks are different from the rest of the world (except for Myanmar and Liberia).
"I swear to God, that bridge came out of nowhere!!!"
They should implement a large yellow sign, with bold black letters displaying a clear warning of the maximum height. They could even add two yellow lamps either side of the sign, that flash in unison to attract attention.
👍
or say - only passenger cars allowed on this road..... simple.
+ Ritesh Nair - I don't agree with that. It's a public road. Why impede someones freedom of choice?
I think a clear warning sign is sufficient. Then people can make their own decision to risk it or not.
If they cause damages, then they must pay for the damages, as they are responsible for them.
Same with cigarettes. I agree that each pack should show clear warnings about the health risks, but I don't think they should be banned. Freedom of choice of the most important aspect to the citizens of any developed country in my opinion.
+Dan Coulson It is a public road and hence the right of public should be protected from people who do not have sufficient grey cells inside the skull to make a logical decision. It is not just the damage that happens to the truck but the associated effects as well. That could be the shortest route for an ambulance to get a sick person to the hospital which now gets blocked because someone thought 11'9" truck will fit through a 11'8" clearance. Cops could be used in more productive areas (I know, I know) than access and use resources to remove the trailer debris. It could be a car right behind these trailers that gets hurt because he decided to that. So, it goes beyond just the trailer. Many parkways allow only passenger cars on them, shouldn't be different here. Public amenities are for public to use, not abuse.
they kinda did. sadly, the truck drivers in the area where this bridge happens to be are lacking in the brain cell department. still, makes for some hilarious fails.
As a Dutch civil enginerer this hurts me. Rising the brigde is not an option but lowering the road is.
From the Q&A of the site
''Can’t the road be lowered?
That would be prohibitively expensive because a sewer main runs just a few feet below the road bed. That sewer main also dates back about a hundred years and, again, at the time there were no real standards for minimum clearance for railroad underpasses.''
In the Netherlands there are no bridges like this because we think before we place. This is a good example of cheap and fast. We need a bridge just because, so dont make it expensive.
Even so, the bridge is well constructed, but with so many hits it will collapse with a heavy train on the wrong moment. I wonder what happens if a big truck hits it while a heavy train goes over it.
MrChrisivisi There is a "crash beam" installed right in front of the bridge.
The trucks are actually hitting the crash beam and not the bridge.
James Barca Yea I discoverd that after I posted this...
Detecting a whiff of European disdain for North America, compounded by engineering credentials here. The "...think before we place..." comment, tell me were Dutch engineering firms forecasting taller vehicles 100 years ago? Really, there are no outmoded constructions left in Europe? Please, I happen to know that there are. The problem here is that this road seems to have become an option for traffic of this height, to be on it in the first place. Probably better to build another road somewhere to take heavy traffic, or to bar tall vehicles to eliminate the risk of this very entertaining problem from occurring.
Ishka Bibble There are no outmodded constructions left in Europe. We had wars so it's all new here
MrChrisivisi "In the Netherlands there are no bridges like this because we think before we place. This is a good example of cheap and fast. We need a bridge just because, so dont make it expensive. "
Since when? This bridge was built before World War One. It was not until after World War Two that Eisenhower pushed for the Interstate Highway System with its current regulations of bridge height. How many bridges, built before World War One, are still standing in the Netherlands?

I really get some sort of sick satisfaction out of watching. Whoever repairs trucks in that area must make a fortune!
I used to live in a town with a bridge just like that on the next block, every time it was hit it had to be checked and, as it was a fairly busy rail link, was a big hassle for a lot of people.
that bridge was precisely made 6 inches too low to shave the tops of trucks lol.
2:50 pedestrian was like... here we go again...
Whoever made that bridge should be in charge of building all bridges in the US. When I lived in PA, there were bridges way high above the expressway, and chunks of concrete were nailing cars and trucks below and you could see skylight going under it. Another bridge I canoed under was a turnpike bridge and it was a rusty nasty mess underneath with all kinds of cracks and chips in the concrete.
quest giver: "you must avoid the bridge at all co-"
me: ye ye something about a bridge of doom got it
also me 5 minutes later:
this yellow thingy with flashing lights is there for drivers to avoid collision with the bridge. they hung the yellow thingy too close to the bridge. if a truck hit it, the driver wouldn't be able to stop before the bridge to avoid getting rekt. also, some videos show that some trucks don't hit the yellow thingy but hit the bridge.
It's because a number of trucks turn daily into Peabody (the street parallel to the tracks) so they would end up hitting it every day.
The lights get triggered half a block back, well out of view of the camera. Well enough time for the truck driver to exit down Peabody. We're seeing the once a month or so crashes from those not paying attention.
How is it that they don't have drag chains/bars above this road? I mean yeah, it would be a little annoying for the trucks that drive the road and turn every day, but if they're designed right, they should handle getting hit repeatedly, and the safety benefit from installing them would be substantial.
The height on the sign isn't the height of the sign, but the height of the lowest point on the under side of the bridge. They could elevate the sign so that it sits 15 ft above the road, it would still read 11 ft 8in tall bridge.
i bet that bridge is like "when?.... when the suffering will end ?"
Why do I enjoy watching these videos? Because it gives me a perverse thrill.
Thanks for this video this is hilarious bridge is hungry for trucks buses trailers and when it says feed me u better do it
How many hits can a bridge take? They must have a clean up crew stationed there everyday just to clean up that fucking mess
More to the point, what effect is it having on the bridge?
True, I only noted this after watching a while.
Lol.
@@mospeada1152 Effects on the bridge? Thats a RAILROAD bridge extra strong. You have to hit it with a flatbed of heavy logs, going 60mph to hurt that thing. They finally raised it 4 inches but truck drivers still hit it. Can't read.
the crash beam takes all the hits.
All they have to do is put up overhead signs a couple of blocks from the bridge. Hang some chains from the bottom of the sign so the ends are at 11'8", or maybe a bit lower.
Have the signs say: Low Bridge Ahead - If The Chains Hit Your Truck, You Will Not Clear The Bridge"
There's a large, yellow sign that tells people how tall bridge is, and it even starts flashing a bright, yellow light if your truck is too tall.

3:50 Two Men And a Truck
3:54 Two Men
The municipality should have placed some kind of collision swing bar at the height of the bridge, well in front of the bridge so that over height vehicles would hit it and hear that long before they destroy their vehicles hitting the bridge. Humans aren't perfect, which is why the world is full of other safety and preventative measures.
There's actually a flashing light warning system that's triggered by a height sensor a block or so before the bridge. You can see the flashing warning lights on the bridge.
The problem is, most people are likely to assume that such warning lights are flashing all the time. That makes them mostly useless unless you already know that those lights mean you're too tall... which is to say that they're very useful the *second* time you see them. :-)
What *might* be effective is a *red* light and a giant sign that blinks the words "TOO TALL FOR UNDERPASS". But even that isn't guaranteed.
David Gatwood
You have truck drivers that are inattentive enough, they ignore multiple warnings that they won't fit. What do you think will happen if a car in front of them suddenly stops, because the car driver reacted to the red light? Many accidents where not only one stupid driver gets hurt, but maybe multiple uninvolved people.
Just like everything else suggested here, that was investigated and doesn't work. There's a turn immediately prior to this that many large trucks need to make. So there's nowhere to put a swing bar that wouldn't hit some trucks that aren't going under the bridge.
Which is solvable by making the bar robust enough that trucks can hit it without damage. That or make the traffic light be "One car per green" like a metering light, and have a "right turn only" if the vehicle is overly tall.
Nice clean sweep on first travel trailer
Who ever built that bridge should get the engineering award of the century. Built like a tank and has an insatiable appetite for box trucks and campers.

Khamis1203 I don't feel sorry for ANY of them, they should know damn well what the height of the thing they are driving/towing and paying attention to the signs
beast0382 True but it has been around 85 years since bridges over vehicular roads were built under 13 feet of clearance in the US, with 16 being common for anything post 60s. So it is actually pretty rare for clearance to ever be an issue for vehicles designed for US highway standards.
Generally only place this ever comes up is very old train bridges or pretty historic bridges or tunnels, even in those cases many cities have resolved the issue by when the road has major maintenance they will go ahead and dig the road down inches to feet to get the clearance of modern semis and the style cargo van seen above need.
The fact it is 11 ft 8 in is probably because the city took the cheap route when doing maintenance at some point and just added a new surface layer of asphalt over the old road, which if you look at a lot of the rentals trucks, buses and semis. That 4 inches was the difference between it being a non issue and shearing the top of the vehicle off.
+SnowmanTF2 Still, no excuses for paying fuckin' attention to the fuckin' signs on the motherfuckin' *ROAD*. Nope, if you drive a vehicle, it's your job to know what you can and cannot do with it.
beast0382 Should know the height... blabla, BULLSHIT!!! First of all people can be driving one thing on day A and another on day B, not only that this video clearly shows that drivers are not aware that the bridge is too low, does that mean they are idiots or reckless? No and by the number of incidents you can see this is far too common and could have many factors at play why the drivers collided with the bridge. A common sense solution is to acknowledge that this traffic situation is dangerous and accommodate to the drivers, instead of playing the blame-game on your self-righteous horse.
In the aircraft industry they don't take chances like these and don't leave it up to the captain to decide if they are over-speeding or stalling or whatever else, they make sure the captains knows the problems ahead of time with all the bells and whistles possible and they will try to accommodate and eliminate reoccurring pilot-errors because they acknowledge humans are not always aware of the dangers around them and in certain scenarios even more so. The goal is to reduce the potential points of failure

well then problem solved, there's literally a flashing sign that says they are overheight.
So, I have a west coast story that almost matches this: I had a wet lease (full service) Ryder cube van (Ford) and they add on a fiberglass box, and a teak floor, so I complained that the GVW weight was weighing down the rear, so the Ryder shop ADDED an extra leaf spring to level the box. Fast forward, I'm off to visit my brother in Tacoms, Wa. and do a drive through (I think it was some Naugles or burrito place, a stand alone building. I get my order, but as I pull forward I realize the SIDES of the building AND the ROOF of the exit are not exactly to code: they're closing in on my box. I fast forward, scraping the sides AND top of my truck. With Canadian plates I head south: if the smokies were looking for me they would think I'd be heading south to Tacoma!!!!!!
I love the video of the fire truck, that's hysterical!!
