  • This is the famous 11 foot 8 inch can opener bridge. This bridge has become famous due to all media coverage it gets from all the truck accidents it creates, it’s so famous it even has it’s own RUclips channel that has been running for nearly 10 years.
    The bridge used to be known as the Norfolk Southern-Gregson Street Overpass, it has been renamed to the 11 foot 8 Bridge, but most know it by it’s nickname “the can opener”.
    Jürgen Henn installed a home security system in his home and used a webcam to start recording the crashes, since he started he has recorded 129 crashes in just under 10 years, as of Feb 2018.
    The bridge was made in 1940 and since then Trucks, Buses & RV’s have been getting bigger & bigger to the point where most cannot fit under this bridge anymore.
    Thanks for watching.

    ★★★ *FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE VIDEO / FACT UPDATES* ★★★
    *1) North Carolina Law requires a height clearance of 13'6"* - However, this bridge is NOT in violation because it was built prior to the current height standard. At the time of Its construction, it met all applicable criteria. The current standard cannot be applied retroactively, and re-building the bridge would be too costly. Lowering the road is also not an option due to a sewer line under it. Also, even if the road could be lowered, in time it would become flooded and impassable in heavy rains.
    *2) Why not just lower the road* - The reason the road cannot be lowered is because there are sewer lines and water pipes below the roads surface, and the council could not lower the roads surface any further. Also if they wanted move the pipes, it would cost millions of dollars and will cause important utilities to be shut down for weeks or even months. So it’s not practical.
    *3) Why not lower the bridge, to make it obvious a truck won't fit through* - For the same reason they have never raised the bridge, because the railroad company does not have to, they are legally within their rights not to raise or lower the bridge.
    *4) Why not just close the road, so no one can go through* - Well maybe because most small trucks, buses & RV’s still do fit under the bridge, that the council did not want to interfere with re-routing all that traffic, just because 1 truck a month does not pay attention to warning signs, and crashes into the guard rail.
    *5) Why not just ban trucks past a certain height from using that bridge* - Ok seems like a good idea, how will you inform all the random trucks using that bridge of that ban, will you use a sign stating the ban? I assume you will put that sign near the bridge somewhere, maybe right next to the BIG FLASHING SIGN saying "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN" because obviously the truck drivers are reading all the signs at the bridge, right?
    *6) What happens to all the metal parts that break off the trucks* - Jürgen Henn, the owner of the youtube channel Yovo68, picks up pieces of metal from Truck Accidents and sells them on his website, along with T-Shirts, now this man is an entrepreneur.
    *UPDATE 28.10.19:* They have finally raised the bridge, the bridge has now been raised 8 inches. So now it is 12 feet 4 inches (12' 4"), but trucks still hit it.
    - Here is a follow up story on the new height bridge - ruclips.net/video/tO6x0eBnrmU/видео.html

      I watch the 11-8+8 channel all the time!!
      (Channel name is "yovo68")
      But it does have many nicknames!
      It's one of my favorite channels!!
      I should say that I rarely get a giggle from other people's misfortunes, and/or mistakes.
      But for some reason,
      THIS situation puts a smile on my face EVERY TIME!!!
      I think that's bcuz it's just PURE stupidity.
      I mean, there are
      SOOO MANY WARNINGS
      I just never understand HOW these drivers are not paying attention.
      And I REALLY don't like lazy drivers!
      The warning signs actually start further down the block before even getting to the intersection.
      So, it's very difficult to feel sorry for these drivers, and the majority of them are speeding too.
      Anyway, the comment section is A LOT OF FUN TOO!!!
      But I gotta know,
      actually,
      all the regulars in the comment section want to know too-
      We're always wondering if there's a specific code called out on the scanner for this type of bridge "accident"?
      Since you also have a can opener bridge near you, I thought maybe you could shine a light on this topic?
      We're also hoping the code is a bit of a jokester code too!
      Like - a special code made just for your local can opener!?!!
      Oh, I hope so!
      We all need a good laugh from time to time!
      Or maybe it's just a boring old regular type of code called out on the scanner?
      Either way, I am still curious!
      And would LOVE to know what it is!
      Thanks for your time! ❤️

      Bridge height not something that instinctively gets noticed by car drivers...we just assume it's okay (they must have built it right). I think that they just need to ban trucks below this bridge, or they can raise it, otherwise it's unfair on new truck drivers.

    • @RickDeckardMemories
      @RickDeckardMemories 4 года назад +28

      Problem is... you have to pay lots of attention TO LOTS OF THINGS, especially if this is one of the first times you are operating a 40ft long extra wide vehicle. Especially in the city environment, you have to pay attention TO EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME.
      Please also remember that these drivers are not out on a recreational drive to a picnic - they have freight to deliver, deadlines to keep, often in unfamiliar locations.
      Professionals with years of experience can make it look easy, but it is insanely stressful when you are starting out.

That's why I think that we need to keep in mind that not everybody with a truck is expected to be a professional, or a good driver, and might miss this one-off bridge - just since one-time truck renters are not trained to regularly think about bridge heights. 90% of these trucks are rental trucks, likely driven by people who have no trucking experience, and they're just renting it for whatever reason.
    Also interesting to note that what the trucks are hitting is not the bridge itself, but a large beam erected in front of the bridge to protect it.

    • @DuckOfRubber
      @DuckOfRubber 6 лет назад +29

      Because of the contour of the road, the bridge is slightly lower relative to the road on the opposite side. That's why even after hitting the beam some trucks appear to clear the bridge only to get stuck when they're almost through. The hope is that if they aren't going fast they will stop when they hit the beam and not hit and get stuck under or damage the bridge itself. Sometimes it works, other times not.

      I worked for Hertz/ Penske then Penske Truck Leaseing for many years, this type of accident is NOT uncommon with low bridges and also inverted "U" shaped bridges. Trucks would probably make the inverted "U" if they stay in the center but often oncoming traffic forces them over and takes the corner off the roof. Some are so bad the whole box has to be removed from the frame and replaced. Reefer's are the worse, foam insulation all over the place. Also have seen exhaust stacks and cab roof airfoils destroyed on tractors. Most memerable was a low hanging power line at road re construction tearing all the cab roof clearance and marker lights off and bending both exhaust stacks. On another note Ihave pics of dead rats in dashboards(chewing on wiring) and once a full skunk skin/hide hanging under a tractor on the fuel crossover line support bar minus the skunk and no odor! part of being a truck driver is knowing how high your rig is, period. It's not the bridge's fault, nor the railroad, nor anyone else but the driver if you peel back the top of the trailer because you "think" your rig eill go under it! hence the warning signs. This bridge is exceptional in its attempt to warn drivers of the impaired clearance. Bridges in the Pacific Northwest aren't decked out with all the bells and whistles that this bridge has. Our bridges just have a sign on the bridge that states it's overall height. I used to drive trucks, and repair them. By the way the trailer section aka cargo section is not the body of the truck like the gentleman here that's evidently from Australia? says. You drive your truck into any bridge because you're too fucking lazy or ignorant to obey the lights and warning devices, then the accident is all on you and NOBODY ELSE.

    • @smitajky
      @smitajky 5 лет назад

      We had a bridge that violated this seemingly easy principle. Because the road curved down and up, a long vehicle is a long way above the road in the middle. So a truck with at least a foot below bridge clearance height would still jam. Because of the way it curved it didn't create the spectacular damage but it was still well and truly stuck. To remove them they had to let air out of the tyres to increase the clearance then drag the truck backwards. Quite spectacular in its own way.

The problem is the other grade crossings of the railroad tracks. You can't just raise one 100' long section without causing major problems on each side. It was a costly and time-consuming job just to raise this bridge up 8" to level the roadbed in the area. (This bridge was a "dip" in the track.) In order to raise this bridge again, many more other areas will also need to be changed. In a perfect world, this bridge and all bridges would be of equal height.
