Are there any statistics on the 11'8" bridge crashes?
shreddder999 Not that I know of, but it does keep the aluminum business in town busy. By the way, I don’t think for a minute that’s a 11’8”. Maybe an 11’5” at most.
They HAVE to put a camera on the other side, so we can see the driver's face when he slams into the bridge.
lol
If they aren't buckled in I'm sure it's a crazy all the sudden stop lol never tire of these videos
Yup. And they can pay 5$ for the photos like an amusement park ride.
Exactly! And see the sleep crash out of his eyes

News headline: "Penske To Introduce 11'7" Trucks"
News Update: Even with 11’7 trucks, The bridge still can kick its ass!
They could call it the Master Chief😅
😂😂😂😂
I can't help but wonder how many trucks Penske has lost to this bridge monster.
I thought the same thing... lol... Like you'd think these companies would tell people stay the fck off that street... lmfao!!
Tony Campanaro I'm sure the truck rental companies do. These clowns ignore the flashing sign, why check if you're on the street they warned you about? lol
Easy way to get a new truck. They would have to teach truck drivers to read for the sign to be effective.
I bet it is well over 500 trucks lol :-)
and how many times has the Penske dealer said, 'I bet you wish you got the damage waver insurance now...'
Very stable construction! 👍👍👍 Has been tested multiple times 😂😂😂
That’s a train bridge. Doesn’t get much stronger
@@cmz1588 If you look closely, the thing they hit isn't even part of the bridge. To save the city money from people hitting the bridge they put up a heavy duty metal bar that takes the impact before it even reaches the bridge.
have a crash barrier. they don't hit the bridge
Shoulda used the killdozer.
The truck at 11:50 did nudge the bridge a bit
The MOST DANGEROUS vehicle on the road is a big rental truck.
It's being driven by someone without any training for its size.
If you see one, keep your distance, I always do.
I rented on once and had four people in the back playing bombardment while I was going down the road. I hit the brakes hard and you could hear a bunch of bones hitting the floor L.O.L. (the good ol' days)
Yeah, I drove one temporarily for my mom, who needed it, because her license was suspended. Absolutely terrifying. Worse yet, the path where we needed to go was full of sharp turns, then a steep hill, then a steep downhill with a stop sign at the bottom. I was so scared my foot wouldn't find the brake to stop, though it was the very first thing I guaged when I got in. I made it back to her apartment complex in it but refused to drive it again after that. I'd rather just let someone else drive it for me, even if it means hiring someone.
I'm also poor at reversing into parking spots even in a car (I'm partially blind in my right eye and I still don't see that great in my left eye either). So, parking backwards to load or unload things would be hard for me. Also, having assisted in dispatch for XPO Logistics, which handles large deliveries for a multitude of companies, we sometimes got complaints from customers or people who said a driver hit their vehicle or property. Really makes me wonder why America thought it would be a great idea for people to drive such large vehicles, which is a massive upgrade from even an SUV or pickup truck, without any kind of training.
That is an interesting point! I am going to pay more attention to that when I drive.
@@d.s7741 Wow that was really mean thing to do 😡😠😡😠
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess - Someone braked hard in front of me and I had to avoid a rear end collision, I felt bad about it and no one got hurt. You're obviously not supposed to have people in the back of a 26' U-Haul while going down the road. Just a bunch of rowdy guys doing crazy things.
The trick is to get enough speed to make it all the way under...
But you still lose your roof.

All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't stop them rental trucks from crashing into that damn overpass again

I love how they have a signal that tells you when someone is about to plow into the bridge! lol!
I love how it doesn't have any effect and drivers just ignore and bust through, often with a heavy foot on the accelerator.

The Bridge (formally known as the Norfolk Southern-Gregson Street Overpass and nicknamed "The Can-Opener") is a railroad bridge in Durham, North Carolina, US, that has attracted media coverage and popular attention because so many vehicles collide with the unusually low overpass, resulting in damage ranging from RV roof air conditioners being scraped off to entire truck roofs being removed.[1] The 79-year-old bridge along South Gregson Street provides only 11 feet 8 inches (3.56 m) of vertical clearance. It cannot be raised because nearby railroad crossings would also have to be raised with it. The street also cannot be lowered because a major sewer line runs only four feet (1.2 m) under Gregson Street.
Brett Allen COVER UFO MAGAZINE Never knew it was in North Carolina! I’m only a few hours from this bridge then!
Excellent response! Thanks for posting.
I never knew this but that's nuts!
Brett Allen COVER UFO MAGAZINE , actually with todays modern composite building materials, and the simple fact that you can engineer the support of the bridge on top, rather than underneath you really could gain height all the way up to about 10 inches below the rail track,, perhaps even more......
It literally has a system built in saying your truck is too high, turn. lmao

I'm guessing the police dispatch just has to say "head over to the 11foot8" and they know where to go.
Code 11foot8- or code 140 (11 foot 8 in inches). That's about 3 metres 60cm for non- Brits/ Yanks btw (I don't know if most Canadians, Australians, Irish etc. can deal in feet and inches anymore or not.)
Not even that theyd simply use the code "Weve got another 11-8" lol

Actually 11foot8 bridge was the earthquake epicenter.

Traffic sign: "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN"
Trucks: BANGA!!!
Honestly, if you’re a truck driver and don’t know the overall height of your truck, you need to go back to collecting shopping trolleys, under tight supervision!
But notice that it looks like most of them are from rental companies which means those people don't drive them on a regular basis. Drivers that drive them for a living are less likely to do that.
@@KevinBenecke
Trucks like this I've rented have had the height prominently displayed inside the cabin....
Yeah, but how many people sit there and read all of those little stickers they have in those trucks? Still the people driving them usually don't have the experience with them and some might forget that they have that extra height behind them. Drivers who drive them all the time are more likely to remember.
@@KevinBenecke
Just how many do you think there are?
If a driver is forgetting how different the truck they're driving is from their usual Mini, maybe they shouldn't be driving at all...
Al Morrison All Penske straight trucks actually have the height of the truck right on the D/S at the front of the box. All you have to do is look at your D/S mirror and it's right their in bold letters!
It's just easier to total the truck than it is to read the signs.
Truck repair centers must love this intersection. They probably say "let me guess...11'8?"
We have a bridge like this in bayswater of perth Australia. She's also a hungry beast!
Gronk
I just wish they had a camera on the other side of the bridge to catch the expressions of the slack-jawed yokels when they can-opener their trucks on this bridge
Too Bad They Can't Equip These Vehicles With a WiFi Sensor to Detect Wet Spots on The Drivers Seat, and Broadcast It.👍
It's driver inattention.
someone needs to get one up. love seeing reactions
For me, it would be more than a wet spot, especially if the front wheels came off the ground. You'd have to throw the seat away, and start with a new one.
I'd say these trucks are salvageable, the bed compartment is trashed but the undercarriage and the cab should still be usable in most cases. Lots of damage though, big time bucks to fix it.
They should make a sign go down on the other side of the bridge saying ''Told You'' after the crash
Penske truck rental, "yup, that'll cost you about $10,000".
Thank god for insurance.
@@kevin6293 Regular rental insurance doesn't cover it...

That rental truck Co must have the best fleet of trucks in the US.
Is it wrong to love the fact that you can hear the impact?
Also, you can tell the ones who are trying to "beat the red light" as the peel off the entire roof of the truck
The bridge itself is 11'8", the massive bar wielded across the opening by the truck repair company is 10'8" however.
I don't think alot of people got this joke, but I LMAO
LOL 😁
@George Cable I get it! Lol, good one
It's there to defend the bridge, and is doing a pretty good job.
Good joke then go watch the video again. of course it might be the angle of the camera, but it does look like that massive bar is way lower than the 11'8"
I would put several bars across the road, dangling from chains, that read: Hit this and crash your truck into the bridge.
Maybe start 200 meters before the bridge on either side.
Well it would have to go on one side because it’s a one way road unless people just commonly drive the wrong way on that road a lot....
some places do
These drivers... Bars hit the roof of the truck "chains must be at the wrong height"
Yes...McDonalds does that to keep vehicles from smashing their roof in the drive through
They need another camera focused on the faces of the driver's as they strike the bridge. That would be priceless.

I bet the truck repair shop is making a fortune from this bridge!!
I reckon it's a racket by the road workers, soon as a truck slams it they have to repair the underside again, keeps them busy all day.
jhnykx -- In the late '70s or early '80s one of my father's 100 thousand dollar machines was being moved on a flat bed truck from Michigan into Canada. The truck driver did not make the proper calculations from the imperial to metric measurement system and he proceeded to clip off the crank shaft of this huge mechanical press. It cost the trucking companies insurance a whole bunch of dollars but more importantly it upset the purchaser of the machine who then had to wait months longer to finally receive the machine they had already paid a pretty penny for. :-(

Penske and Ryder should hand every renter a paper showing this bridge and it's location.
i love that bridge
It should be a reality TV show.
They are all over the country. The North seems to have the most, as many of them are for elevated trains built decades ago. I had a pickup at a potato chip factory in Chicago . It had three undersized El train bridges, and only one that was 12'6" plus. I had a code book that told me which one. The one I had to use was only tall enough by about 1 1/2 inches. The disgusting thing was the potato chip factory had a flag that stuck up high enough to get your attention, but you could not get to it , except by one route. I picked up a load of Jalapeno chips right when that taste was new. I hauled them to south Texas. The smell was so strong in the trailer , it would burn your eyes. It was coming through the packaging, for Pete's sake. They gave me a bag at the factory, My sister lived in Austin, Texas. I gave them to her , and watched the tears stream down her face , as she and the boyfriend tried to convince me how good they were. ?? Sure.
I love how it happens so much there that people don’t even bat an eyebrow at it 😂
The blinking sign must be on super power save mode. It turned itself off once it sensed the truck was past the point of no return.

Good point. I'm rather surprised that there are not (apparently) any rear-end collisions with trucks that hit the can-opener. Sure have been a few close calls though, both in this video and others.
After more than 35 years of driving trucks, you'd be surprised at he number of morons who tailgate.
Sadly, most people drive with little awareness of surroundings.
Since adding signs, warning lights, red lights activated by overheight vehicles, etc. don't seem to work, maybe they should have a retractable curtain that lowers when an overheight vehicle is detected. If you can't see all those warnings, maybe you can see a curtain completely blocking the lane.
how about a banger bar ? metal pipe that hangs from chains by the light--truck hits banger bar--not fit under bridge
