Jake Zywek, well they got a multi-million pound deal from the BBC for shows such as 'Harry Enfield & Friends' and 'The Fast Show' after being on the independent circuit, the sketches became watered down compared to the characters they would do on stage, i think that is the literal definition of selling out lol.
this sketch is spot on [as is usual with Harry Enfield], there are loads of actors now jumping on the Gervais band wagon and trying to sound like him. Harry is just great at getting it right on just how fake people are, great clip.
For those of you posting asking why Farage is in it. This is a parody of Gervais' show 'Lifes too Short' (I think), where he shoehorns in various celebrity 'friends' into the scenes. So yeah, Farage randomly showing up for no reason is kinda the joke.
The send up is stated at the beginning, it's a pop on the awful BBC three comedy shows where copying Ricky Gervais' is the in thing for not very talented comics.
I suspect there are more layers of irony to it than that. Certainly one of the comments of the sketch seems to be that Gervais will stoop to distasteful and obvious lows for a gag (a bit like your mum). Introducing a cretin like Farage for the sake of a cheap laugh follows this vein.

When it comes to British comedy Harry And Paul have written the script in my very own opinion. You have to admire Ricky Gervais and his very own take on British comedy culture of the office, a class act by himself. People must remember, Each to there own. Not everyone will agree. But both are comical in there own way.

I think you’ve missed the point. They mocking the fact that Gervais does the same mannerisms (that were originally used with Brent) in all of his characters/performances. That’s a common criticism of Gervais- he can’t actually act anything other than a variation on Brent.

It really wasnt a reason to quit. Interesting that something as effective as Brent's body language and expressions can be made formulaic and replicable. Enfield and Whitehouse seem to be on a pretty low profile these days...keep it 90s and bring it back! Other than Top Gear and maybe The Office, the 21st Century has Nothing to offer.
