@Largentina. Try a little smokey smoke sometime. It's actually real easy for us to chill out and lose ourselves for hours at a time (which is kinda worse than a short attention span, in its own way).
This mission shows how great Dutch’s leadership is when he’s fully locked in and also sets up Kieran’s death since he is captured during the celebration for Jack. This mission is the perfect high point before everything fully goes downhill
thanks for letting me relive that awesome mission, the build up, the atmosphere and execution. I remember feeling conflicted once the gang burn down the mansion but pumped for the gun fight just before. Great video!
Engaging narration, outstanding editing, and meaningful comparisons of art between media; congratulations on these amazing videos! I'm looking forward to your future uploads and seeing your channel grow!
this video essay is so well-made, almost convinced me to replay RDR2 again. Easily Top 2 narrative games I've ever played, and its definitely not no.2.
Whatever format you use for your new videos thumbnails now is perfect. It started on your Ghost of Tsushima video, and I see this series going through some of the greatest new games. I swear if you do Howard from Spider-Man 2 or an analysis of The Last of Us, I’m creating a third account and subscribing. Keep up the good work.

playing this mission for the first time left me so awestruck and i had realized that i wasn't just playing a "game" anymore. it had been such a long time since i had a story move me like that and its only happened one other time since then. the whole decay of morals was lost on me as the gang burned the mansion down, i guess i only read the part about revenge.
@@GamerPsychoYT it was definitely a once in a lifetime performance on rockstar's part, i dont have too high of hopes for the upcoming GTA6 but they usually pull through and make a decent singleplayer story
This scene may be a beautiful piece of art, but to everyone else, it’s a meme for how ‘the boys’ talk to each other so they can hang out. When art affects the masses across different eras, that is the power of media.
I always wonder if the gold that is under the floorboard or the Braithwate Manor is something that the current family didn’t even know was there? If you go back when it’s burned down you find her body and I can’t remember if it’s a bar or half bar of gold that was under the floor but now visible since it’s in ashes.
Dude what a great video! But I can admit I have a differing opinion of not just the braithwaite manor mission, but also the gang's motivations as a whole. Not only did the gang likely fully believe in their actions not just because of Jack being taken, but remember that one of the defining qualities of Dutch was that he was a "revolutionary". It is presumed based on dialogue that Dutch likely had parents thought fought for the union in the Civil War, and there were many instances in which Dutch outright lambasted the ignorance of Bill Williamson, plus his gang was also very inclusive of people like Tilly, Lenny, Javier, and Charles. This is why the overall narrative of the game works so well. The gang genuinely believes they are "fighting for something" and "different" from other gangs like Colm O'Driscoll, but this is also why the narrative is GENIUS. We obviously come to find out that the Van der Linde gang is no more different from the O'Driscolls, but what keeps the gang and even the player on Dutch's side is that we see how hard he's fighting for us, when in reality we realize he's looking out only for himself. I recommend playing the mission in act 2 where we fully recruit Keiran into the gang. Keiran remarks that the Van Der Linde gang and the O'Driscolls aren't that much different based on what he observed tied up to the tree in camp, and you IMMEDIATELY hear RDR1 protagonist John Marston defend both the gang and dutch, calling the O'Driscolls and Colm sneak killers and thieves, and saying that "dutch is different... he's like a leader to us". This is all intentional. What "un-does" the gang is that the individual members could not see that in all likelihood after the blackwater massacre, that Dutch's grand ideals were a facade to cover up his true intentions. He was never going to fully be an idealist if it meant living a life of seclusion and peace, Dutch as a character needed to wage war. The addition and influence of Micah also gave him perfect reason to embrace this path boldly in-front of the other gang members. I would also recommend reading Arthur's journal entries, he talks about how he had a solid lead on a clean job that he was planning to work with Hosea, and then Micah got Dutch fixated on the Blackwater heist, and then one of the most mythological and gruesome displays of Dutch's character is on record for people to witness. Dutch showed his true colors in Blackwater. He showed them when he robbed Leviticus Cornwall's train, killing his men and bringing more heat to the gang who was being chased by the Pinkerton's. He showed his true colors numerous times after the noise they had caused in Valentine, allowing Micah back into the gang, and trying to con the families of Rhodes into revealing the gold. Notice how all these events have one quality about them. Money. The kidnapping of Jack might have actually been a godsend, because had the gang had time to think about how tragic the death of Sean was, the events of Saint Denis may not have even happened. I yapped a lot man but honestly its because this was such a well put together and greatly edited video; and even while I don't fully agree with your opinion on the morality of the gang, I do acknowledge that there were individuals like Javier Escuella who did see Dutch unraveling and still chose to side with him. I genuinely think very few members of the gang outside of Arthur himself saw the writing on the wall, which of course is why Arthur Morgan is one of the best protagonists in any video-game ever. I hope this video blows up man because it deserves a lot more views, and I will like and sub hoping for more awesome discussion!
This video is so fucking good, my God. Well done- loved the references to other movies and stories in the western genre (and it taught me more about the world of Red Dead 2)! Hope you have a great day ahead, and keep up the good work!

Favorite mission in each chapter as arthur except for chapter 1 are Chapter 2: A Quiet Time Chapter 3: Blood Feuds Modern and Ancient Chapter 4: The Saint Denis Bank Robbery Chapter 5: getting off the damn island Chapter 6: either My Last Boy or Red Dead Redemption
Ugh I love video essays like this. Both RDR and RDR2 are amazing stories, but I think the backstory behind RDR that we see in RDR2 makes everything far more tragic. And we see that in this mission. The gang is clinging to a lifestyle that is being slowly eradicated and if this isn’t the beginning of their end, it’s certainly a pivotal point. Side note: I never noticed this until I saw the clip of Jack from RDR standing over Abigail and John’s graves, but in RDR2, Jack says he wants to grow up to be a gunslinger and Abigail says “over my dead body”. That’s exactly what happened. Jack waited until she died and became what she feared the most for him. Not only that, he became what John tried to let go of and threw away Arthur’s sacrifice just like his dad. It’s really the final connection in the circle of violence.
idk man i dont think that rdr2 has perfect missions but it does have missions which are a piece of art. like American Venom A Quite Time (i loved that mission) Blood Feuds Ancient and Modern when the gang were riding on their horses on their way to braithwaite manor in blood feuds it put a smile on my face like an impressed smile.
I recently played in RDR1 and i think this plot of rivalry between familys in Rhodes reminding me plot from Mexico than John playing for both sides Colonel Army and Reyes rebels. Of course this plot was take in from Leone movie A Fistful of Dollars(which he stole from Kurosawa movie Yojinbo). Its like meta-plot
