I like the idea that the "leader" was actually just annoying to the rest of the gang. So they gave him a fort outside of their territory just to get him away from them.
Makes sense as I'm sure you wouldn't leave a good leader in some shity run down fort in the middle of nowhere
You can find a civil war hardee hat in the basement of the fort and a letter from a general who was presumably killed by Confederate soldiers who launched a successful attack on the fort

Honestly it’s not a bad idea as the fort is abandoned so not much people will snoop arround and it’s in a different state so they can evade the law in lemoyne as they don’t have jurisdiction over the area and it is a good hide away also it only has one enterance so they can easily take out any bounty hunters after them especially since they have a machine gun there
I love how each gang has some sort of flaw that the Van Der Linde gang has but exaggerated. The Lemoyne Raiders fight for a cause that just doesn't work in the modern world, the Skinner Brothers are as Charles puts it, "Angry men on a rampage," the O'driscolls are basically the way Micah turns the gang, and the Del Lobos have an odd sense of comradery against a man that embodies injustice to them. The Murfree Brood are also a demented group that sticks together because of familial bonds. And if we take Angelo Bronte as well, he misleads his lackeys by giving them what they need, like how Dutch "saved" many of the members of the gang.

I feel that most criminal gangs in general harbor these traits.
Skinner brothers in reality are natives but due to possible* PR nightmare they changed it to European descends.

Despite being fictional there is a hint of reality, there was a period of time where some former confederates tried to keep the war going. Not just for a couple weeks after the war but for a couple years. In time they eventually dissolved a few of them turning into the Klan while some just becoming outlaws. I liked how they maintain that in the game.
That's basically what the KKK originally was, a band of ex Confederate soldiers still fighting on.

Well yeah, they are taking the piss out of the south, the myth of southern gentelmen, the myth of northern aggression ect. They're showing you, these are the types of people who actually existed in that system in that time. Just 30 years after, soo all the polish has worn off the rot.
@@421less1 Honestly though, historically speaking the KKK shouldn’t even exist at the time of the game.
The first KKK was founded by Nathan Bedford Forest as a fraternity for former confederate soldiers (kinda like how Washington help found the Society of Cincinnati for Revolutionary War vets). However the group quickly turned into what was essentially a terrorist organization and Forest left as a result and ultimately denounced the group he had helped found. The first KKK disbanded in the 1860s after the US passed the Anti-Klan legislation.
It wasn’t until the 1920s that the second KKK was founded at Stone Mountain, Georgia following the lynching of Jewish American Liam Frank who was accused of raping and killing one of his young white female workers.
The game takes place in 1899. So for all intense and purposes the KKK shouldn’t even exist as an entity at this point.

It kinda pisses me off that when the Lemoyne Raiders rob a train, no cops actually come. But when Arthur robs a train, every lawman from Valentine to San Francisco arrive to get a piece of the action.
The law enforcement probably doesn’t really care about the Raiders and views them as a nuisance rather than an actual threat.

Fun fact: Eluding to the weapons deals in Cuba and South America, RDO has one of the Lemoyne Raiders hideouts at Clemens Cove where they seemed to have firearms packed on a boat.

The fact that you can make an hour long video about a gang that only shows up in 2% of 60-hour campaign just shows how massive this game is.

There are some cool encounters when you and John go to clear out shady belle but most people miss these because they kill everyone very quickly
Yeah I only discovered about it today. The first guy inside the house downstairs gets his gun jammed, then tries to fist fight you, the second guy upstairs, on the left of the stairs, if you enter his room, pulls out a knife and tries to kill you. And the third guy shoots himself, but everyone knows about that one.

I always liked to imagine that the first guys revolver didn't jam but just wasn't even loaded or the round in that particular spot had already been fired.
Well The last guy I knew was gonna end himself so I blasted his face with a shotgun to get it over with.
Just did the Lindsay Woffard mission. In chapter 4.
Arthur mentions to woffard how he’s staying in shady belle, on the horse ride back to the police station.
Woffard then states “your the ones who took the belle?” (Or something to that effect) Then follows with a slew of insults.
So by that I would say he’s clearly connected or has good ties with the raiders down south. Figured I’d mention it as the video doesn’t. For any of those who care.

One thing I really like about the Lemoyne raiders that you brushed on was how they parallel the Van der Linde gang in some ways. In the raiders' case, at least to me, they reflect something like Dutch's high-falutin rhetoric about American freedom and opportunity and how that view rubs off on the gang. There's the obvious difference that the raiders are bushwhackers -- ex-Confederate outlaws still fighting the Civil War -- and it is interesting to note that Dutch would personally dislike the comparison since "daddy died on a Pennsylvania field" fighting Southerners, implicitly Gettysburg, but there's still that talk about how "something's only lost if you let it be" and misguided notions of self-sovereignty. It dovetails nicely with how you see Dutch still trying to hold on to that outlaw life even when they betray the spirit of that in the prologue by heading east "towards all that civilization".
Also, tangentially, there's this interesting generational gap you're seeing with the raiders. There's the original raiders, the ones from the 3rd Lemoyne and the ones that would have been around when that newspaper mentions how they used to be seen as sort of heroes, and the younger men. That scene where a younger raider shoots the hostage police officer for "disrespecting the cause" to the disapproval of two of the older raiders who wanted to ransom him -- it shows how the times are changing with the rebel remnants evolving into essentially a Lost Cause gang, but it also brings to mind how Dutch's gang is partly kept together by there being a vision for the future and a moral justification for what they are doing.
About your second point, I didn t really see it that way. In my opinion, the 2 senior Lemoyne raiders wanted to keep the police officer alive because a ransom can fetch high, and thus provide funding for the gang to survive or gain in power. By being too idealistic, the Junior Lemoyne ruined their chances. It's quite intriguing to me. You'd think their stubborn kind would have been proud to see that their code stuck so perfectly to a young fellow. But it s the opposite. The older members prefer to think long term

that "Old-Timer" retelling his story would've been no more than a Boy during the time.
Assuming the civil war ended in 1865 in the world of RDR, then it would have ended 35 years previous to him telling his story.
He looks like he could be anywhere from 40-60? So maybe he was in his early or mid 20s, if he is around 60, which is pretty young for someone apparently fist fighting a bunch of other soldiers.
Whatever the math says though, it sounds like an exaggerated story, a young solider blown into the sky and winning a fist fight against a bunch of soldiers in the middle of a battlefield...
Yeah, it seems that Rockstar definitely wanted a Civil War/Lost Cause connection in the game but way too much time had passed for the setting.
If he was 20 in 1865 that meand that he is 54 while telling the story. Perfectly reasonable.

The last confirmed veteran of the Civil War who saw combat died in 1953, James Hard lied about his age to join the Union Army in 1861 and fought through the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg. He lived to the age of 109.

A veteran recounting his story in 1899, not even 40 years after the war, is definitely not a case of "too much time had passed" - it helped set the foundation of the Lemoyne Raiders, making them that much more insane for clinging to the cause of a state and the institution of slavery that ended decades ago.
I mean, Confederate Civil War vets were still around doing things as late as the 1920s, because some of them WERE just boys in the 1860s. Boys as young as 14 fought in the Civil War.
The Lemoyne Raiders keep ambushing me every single 5 minutes im in Lemoyne especially that one bridge where the train passes, its impossible to hang around lemoyne without a army of raiders just blasting you with their repeaters, there one of the reasons why i do not like being in Lemoyne lol

One of my favorite camp events in the game is Tilly telling Arthur, that she doesn't feel good so deep in the south, Arthur at first acts like he doesn't know what she means, until she says something along the lines of "come on Arthur, I'm a neg*o"
Which then Arthur drops the act and says she doesn't have to worry, cause they take care of her

You can get the Bolt Action Rifle in Chapter Two. In the Mission where you Save Shawn from the Bounty Hunters. After ambushing the 2 Hunters near the River. Fight your way up the hill and some Bounty Hunters will drop the rifle when you shoot them
You have to shoot the guy on the left, whether hit or kill, he will drop it. Looting him whether picking up the rifle or not will give a few rifle cartridges.
i’m a bit late but you can also get the bolt action from the sheriff in valentine if you find him with the bolt action and drop him whilst he’s holding it, you can then pick it up and flee the law, i know because i needed it for hunting a cougar for the legend of the east satchel so i just shot him and took it because i couldn’t wait till chapter 3

I can remember when I captured Lindsey Wofford, I tied him up and threw him on my horse, but as soon as I left the fort I did get his cronies try to save him, they also tried saving him the last time I played it through so I think it's random whether or not they try rescuing Wofford
Wofford is a bounty every bounty has cronies that try to save your target

Some of the bounties that are gang members usually do have rescue attempts, but sometimes they don't, plus not all the bounties are for gang members
I never encountered them but I do know that you can encounter rival bounty hunters when doing it but when I did it last time I rode so fast that the bounty hunters didn’t catch up to me and I saw them following me

The whole commander thing I think is a reference to the fact that the lemoyne raiders operate in multiple states. I think he is the leader of this unit, and probably one of the many commanders that they have
RDR2 has some of the best voice acting performances ever given, unfortunately Camille sounds like they pulled him out of an early PS2 game
Also the spanish in Guarma which isn't even near to Cuban accent because the voice actors are obviously Mexicans and they have some weird generic dialogues
Same for most of the Del Lobo guys, specially the one you capture with Sadie in the Epilogue
And Robbie Laidlaw, the supposed Scotsman who just sounds like he's doing his best Demoman impression
Always thought it was weird how there was such a big downgrade in the quality of the Spanish dialogue in this game vs the first one. But also the Cantonese and Creole heard in Saint Denis are super legit? It's weird
@@nousername2942 I played through the first again recently and honestly other than Reyes I didn’t think any of the deliveries were awful. I live in a city with a lot of Mexican immigrants, the VA sounds like they cast people who speak English as a second language which is perfect. Not sure where they went wrong in the sequel. As someone already stated the Del Lobos are laughably bad as well. Maybe they didn’t care as much because there’s far fewer Latino characters in the game?
I'm pretty sure it's because it's a character who's pretending to be french LOL. He doesn't sound french at all, and you can hear the leaking of his original accent through his lines. I'd say his voice actor actually did a great job, I can only imagine it's difficult to voice a voice that's pretending to be... a different voice LOL
I accidentally killed both bounties trying to capture them and while taking Lindsey Wofford’s body to Saint Denis, I did have a couple raiders try to stop me. Weird that it doesn’t happen if he’s taken alive.

It happens if he’s alive as well. I played through it yesterday, as long as you are following the yellow line on the compass when bringing him to Saint Dennis, some two or three bounty hunters or raiders will always appear. Let me double check if they were bounty hunters or raiders.

Was quite fascinating honestly, and it amazes me how down to every last npc the voice acting in this game is just top notch. Even though this dude was some crazy scumbag I really felt like i was sitting there being told a war story... Until the end anyway I think he was just gassin himself up lmfao

I stole a horse from a camp of Raiders without killing any of them and sold it to the fence not far away, their campfire smoke was still in the distance so I went back. They were all sat around the camp fire but none of them reacted to me, the red blips had gone from the map. I was literally punching them in the face and they just stood there taking it. Needless to say I got a bit "unit 731" on their asses.
These documentary style videos are great. Puts into perspective how much work the studio put into setting up the world and its history.
This game is one of the few games that even after all these years you find/discover something new
It’s actually incredible how Rockstar went into making these detailed animations for the camp encounters. A lot of people would just go into the camp & kill everyone without even thinking.

I don't know if you know this but if you capture him in chapter 4 he references the fact that you took over Shady Belle
The name in that letter you found, “William Marcus Anderson” might be a reference to the Real life Figure William “Bloody Bill” Andersen who was a bushwhacker during Bleeding Kansas, riding with a group called “Quantrill’s Raiders” who were the perpetrators of the Lawrence, Kansas Massacre. I love how they add in these small details that get over looked especially if you don’t have much knowledge of the History of Missouri and Kansas or even the Guerrilla warfare that took place between the two states.
Very in depth and non rushed video on this gang. Very well done.

I'm on my second playthrough chapter 2 and last night I kept running into these guys everywhere. I love taking out the rival gangs in this game, especially when you can sneak up on them at a campfire and toss some dynamite at em.
When you get to the encounter where the veteran recalls the battle at copperhead landing I threw a dynamite stick into their camp right after he describes the "boom" sound from the artillery
Like Arthur Morgan says "there a bunch of children playing soldiers."

Amazing video, I find that RDR2 is one of the most in depth games so many details im on my 4th play through and still finding new things

I could listen to you talk about red dead lore for days. I've played since release and got 100% completion 4 times now and it still doesn't get old. I still come across things I've never seen before, like how the raiders graffiti and vandalise Saint Denis, never seen that in any of my playthroughs that i can remember! Love this game and love your content on it.

I do like that the leader of the leymone raiders is in a old captured Northern fort with a letter from a general killed by confederate soldiers. Really adds to the disenfranchised and "the south will rise again"feel of the old confederate states

As John I had an encounter with the Raiders outside of the tavern in Rhodes. Apparently there was a raider yelling and belittling a friend of his who he served with in the War. The friend became a member of society and chastised the raider for living in the past.

Alright i know this sounds cliche and most people who read this wont believe it (i wouldnt),but i started watching Fizhy 4 years ago when i was 10 as i loved assassins creed and he and i shared similiar viewpoints,but the special thing abt his channel for me is how as my interests changed so did his (to witcher,to red dead and mass effect) so on behalf on the community thank you Ethan!
R* did a great job when it came to their take on the civil war. Although the views of the South has problems that are very clear in todays age, that doesn't mean that every Northerner was good and every Southerner was bad.
Best example is the 2 homeless vets from Valentine and Rhodes. The Union vet turned out to be devious and shady as we found out more. But the Confederate vet turned out to be a genuine and honest person. I'm English so I don't know too much about the civil war, but i was still able to appreciate this detail
That, and a lot of the anti Southern bile came from the villainous Dutch. Though of course that's understandable as his father was killed at Gettysburg.
I also appreciate the fact that the Murfee Brood, a gang of feral, inbred hill people were located far in the north. That's a very typical southern stereotype here in America.
One more bit of historical context; many of the Lemoyne Raiders, in addition to their yellow bandanas, are wearing grey military uniforms. These are the uniforms of the CSA army. So, it's just another way of announcing themselves as the continuation of the fight that they don't believe ended in 1865.

The Raiders Fragmented but old members make new gangs and they still call themselves the LR plus weaker gang take that title/name to seem more of a threat
Makes sense to call myself a member of something that people already fears.Thus making the raiders seem a little clustered and flustered
So technically there could be half a dozen gangs with each a different "leader" like the guy at the fort that does not get mention after the bounty mission
Maybe he was a small fry gang leader using a fake Raider member

Man every time I play or watch someone else play RDR2... It just amazes me with the sights and sounds. 2018 was 4 years ago (not really that long ago) but nonetheless just amazing graphics.

@@christopherlambert7814 yeah definitely lived mostly in Raleigh, currently in Greenville and it’s same way. I did hear however that there was high supremacist activity on the western side of the state. Which currently reading the about what happened in NC during the civil war it makes sense. Seeing as the eastern side of the state had more union sentiment than the west, it was also where the Union started operation in NC drawing some forces from the area into the Union at the time.

I'd really like to see a USA map but with the RDR fictional states
Only problem with that would be is the fact that they reference real world locations in game, such as New York, Baltimore, and Chicago. So like are those states real in this otherwise fictional universe or in the case of Baltimore and Chicago are the cities real but the states they reside in fictional. I know I’m reading way to much into this fictitious world, but it would seem inconsistent and weird to see that on a map
@@xannymanny9754 the way I think of it is Red Dead’s states exist in addition to the real states, however that works geographically. Where exactly that places them I have no idea.

Just a little knit-picking here from a history nerd. The majority of the Lemoyne raiders would've been too young to serve in the Civil War according to the Game's timeline (late 1800's and early 1900's). There are a few elderly individuals in the group who are likely veterans, and so take a natural leadership role, but most are probably just the sons of veterans, or are simply using the late war as an excuse for their criminal behavior. Also, the way the game depicts battlefields always breaks my immersion a little. These places were not littered with cannon and the various other detritus or war this late into the 19th century. They would've been overgrown plots of land not too different from any other (if not just someone's active farm), with perhaps a simple wooden marker here and there denoting what had taken place there. I think depicting them this way would've actually lent them an even eerier sense of reverence rather than depicting them as though they were an abandoned movie set from Gone With the Wind. Also, being that Lemoyne is Louisiana, the territory above it (New Hanover) would be Arkansas, which means that it too would've been a former Confederate State.
So happy to see this series come back!

Lemoyne Raiders remind me of the rag tag confederate militias that continued on fighting after the war was initially over. They were either killed off or chased away by union patrols heading southwest.
