Glad to see Kevin being really critical of an album. Especially with the muddled mixing and production. I've liked WLR since it came out but that's definitely one of its biggest flaws. It's clear though that Kevin really wants to like Carti and this album but those issues are getting in the way of it. I think he would like self-titled or Die Lit a lot more, or he should at least listen to all the big hits on each of them
Very proud of Kevin for taking the "Whole Lotta Red" plunge here with this one. This album is hard for even long-time rap fans to get a grasp of and appreciate, I figure it would be even harder for someone as new to the genre as Kevin is to try and make sense of. Personally, I look at WLR as Carti's Yeezus, which is saying a lot, considering how chaotic in nature some of Carti's earlier music had been. I really enjoy WLR, but I never argue with people who don't share my sentiment, I TOTALLY understand why they would feel the way they do about it.
I can honestly say this is one of my favorite albums of 2021. I’ve listened to a track or two from it for almost every day this year, it just never gets old for me
my exact thought.when he mentions the tracks at times being too muddy and or not presenting themselves, the guitar completely brings the track a new light. Additionally, these songs sound EVEN better when in a live environment
After seeing Kevin’s reaction to this album would love to see a video on Die Lit. Thanks for the great content guys. My dad and I always struggled to share a connection with music and I hated that it never meant the same things to us, so finding your channel has been huge for me and I can’t thank you enough.
I feel like for some of these albums they need to be revisted after a year. It would be really neat to hear your dad's opinion on MBDTF in the context of Kanye's discrography chronologically, but also with how he has grown to love Kanye as an artist and appreciate his lyricism and production. An album like WLR definitely warrants a revist after a year to see if his opinion has changed. Especially if you start to show him more experimental hip-hop such as Death Grips.
so interesting to see different reactions and what music does to people. i instantly was obsessed with this album. i loved everything about this album, the unusual mixes, the bright cuts, the dirty cuts, vocal strains, everything
Also as well, it has a trendy line "It's the first of the month" that is hugely recognizable. Like imagine 21st of September line but being remembered twelve times a year.
Definitely curious and confused for the first listen. But over time, it ages like fine wine. You can find yourself listening to it more and getting used to the sound. Then it wasn’t played as much for me but now, it’s infectious lmaooo. I love it and almost listen to it everyday. I’d never thought I’d listen to it as much but trust me, something about it just attracts you into the whole punk persona. This album was definitely made for a live performance and when I seen him live, it was fucking amazing. The atmosphere and energy was through the roof. He’s definitely recommended to see him live if you’re into all the mosh pits and raging.
@@eppie4925 I can see how you might find it that way. In terms, I would’ve had a similar opinion but the album is not so much for lyrics. It’s more for an experience. I don’t expect Carti to be have any good lyrics because he isn’t really known for that. I’m not saying this is a 10/10 album but as for Carti’s discography, it’s definitely something new, interesting, and grows on you as you listen to it more over time. I don’t listen to every song on it and Ik there’s some of them that should’ve been cut. Again, it’s really just for performance though I can understand how you have your own opinion lmao.

@@ahhhhyes I’m not the average fan of his music. Nor am I saying that I only listen to Carti. There is much more music that I find better than this but I’m saying as for right now, it’s caught my ear as far as how interesting it is. Like I’ve said, over time it just became addicting in a way. I’ve never really forced myself to listen to his music, it just so happens that I wanted to hear what his stans heard at first. I didn’t understand how they thought what they were listening to was good but I gave it a chance one day and then one day turned into a week and so on. I maybe have exaggerated that I love it in a sense of saying it’s good music because I never said it was. It’s the fact of how he doesn’t care of what he just put out. Just being different and trying new things. On top of that, his live performance which I’ve just been to a week ago or so is what really drew me in more. But yeah, it’s difficult for me to say that it’s good music when you really know it’s not. It’s more so for a feeling you get from listening to it, like a certain vibe. Though, I see where you’re coming from and totally understand.
that feel like dyin description was spot on. my fav song by far on the album, carti was really showing off his vocals and being vulnerable for us all to enjoy
I think it’s important to listen to Carti within the context that his priority is to get you to turn the fuck up. We’re accustomed to listen for the technical aspects of music and a deeper message. Carti’s not trying to craft MBDTF, nor is he trying to paint a deep underlying tone. He’s trying to get you on your feet and rage. When you acknowledge that fact and listen accordingly, it’s a much better listen.
In regards to the energy of newer music, I feel like your dad made a great point. The only way I can describe it is that energy-focused music back in the early metal, punk and hard rock days was very vertical. Whether is was jumping up and down, headbanging, etc. the energy moved people up and down. Hip-hop is more of a horizontal energy. People are more likely to nod their heads forward and back. A lot of hip-hop dance focuses on side-to-side movement. This album, as well as a few other rock-influenced hip-hop records combine these two types of energy in a really unique way. That's what sets them apart from an average rap record.
@@hustlehumbly6169 WHEN you have the opportunity to see him live, do so. The experience was genuinely unbelievable,. the environment brought a spiritual, ritual like feeling. i know that sounds corny... but it is true, the presence he has on stage along with the guitar backing his vocals is heavenly LOL. best experience of my life, a must attend imo
@@ostrich.. every live video I see sounds like an African drum circle summoning ceremony and a real demon is about to pop out lmao so I know what you mean
I think with the sound of the production and mix, it gives it a lo-fi raw noisy punk sound. Like listening to like a lo-fi garage rock/punk band. But can see how it might not work for everyone. It works well in folk/singer song writer stuff too, in a different sense, as it gives it a personal, isolated & melancholy feel imo. Like early Daniel Johnston or the first Waxahatchee album. But again, I can see how someone might prefer a more cleaner brighter mix.
I know a ton of people have said it already but this album really is mixed the way it is intentionally, so that it can be a crazy live performance experience (& it is amazing live). This is an experimental trap album. It’s not meant to be this easily digestible sound that creates familiarity. It’s meant to challenge the current soundscape. Carti knew it was completely different than what people expected, just look at what he was saying and doing during the rollout. Lastly nobody expects the lyrics to be relatable unless you also live in the trap lol. The point is to get a window into the environment the artist is in and to get a vibe from it. Gotta put the lyrics away because Carti largely uses his vocals to add texture and rhythm, and just let the lyrics you catch make you feel a little rebellious. All that being said music is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Definitely try to give it a few more listens though with just a clear head and no expectations
Hey Kevin! You should definitely check out the concert versions of these songs! You were 100% right about the metal guitare energy, the songs have guitar intro’s and outro’s
Merry Christmas and Happy 1 Year Anniversary to WLR. I’ve loved it since it first came out and the replay value remains off the charts. It’s a classic imo because it has that aura about it that’s so different from everything else. In due time, more people will recognize it as a masterpiece. Thanks for reviewing this.
@@b8byJesus To be fair, there’s no such thing as a “classic” album because It’s all subjective at the end of the day. WLR reminds me of Yeezus. It’s outside of the box and different from anything else that dropped at the time. Lots of people shitted on both albums on THE FIRST DAY and yet, they grew on a lot of people. It’s a tough listen the first time(s) around, especially if you’re not a Carti fan pre-WLR but I definitely recommend you listen to it without the internet telling you what’s great or not.
Connor you gotta show your dad Die Lit!! I feel like he’ll enjoy the sound more, along with the amazing features. I think across the board it has the “balance” that your dad felt was missing in WLR. Also it’s just peak Carti. Hope it’s in the lineup 🤞🏻merry Christmas to you both!!
Vitally important you do another reaction to this one in 3-6 months. As a carti fan I didn’t care for the album when it first dropped, now I am in love with this project.
Top 3 songs for me are Die4Guy, King Vamp, and Control. Whole Lotta Red has been my favorite album since the day it dropped. Thank you for reviewing this album
It’s dope to see your “negative” reaction. It’s very obvious that you come in with an open mind and this just doesn’t resonate with you. That’s just cool to see you look for the positive and joke around but still express that it’s not for you. As a fan it makes me appreciate the authenticity of what you are doing on this Chanel. @@idk-cl3rt I feel like we’re gonna get a kanye 808 reaction soon as he mentioned it here but as to what you said I feel as though they only do it when they havent heard the artist before
I think Sky is the most streamed because it has more melody and "everyday-listen" vibe than the others, of which a lot sound more or less like the others.
theory: 23 out of the 24 songs were mixed with the vocals staying in the back and the instrumentals being overall muffled because that's the dark part of the album. the mix for "F33l Lik3 Dyin" is very good because it is the light part of the album. Carti's nightmare is over but maybe it isn't. we don't know what narcissist will bring
I got same theory with you for those bad mixed it’s not that bad but it sound unfinished the fact that Kanye is exclusive producing he did it on Donda too which is gotta be on purpose . For the meaning of RED ,Separate ,Isolated maybe Idk Ps Over beat is so eternal torturing over and over I give this song as a hell compare to Long time which is Heaven to me
I always thought of Carti’s lyrics having less of a meaning and being more similar to hypnosis. I get caught in his repetition and simple lyrics in almost like a trance like state.
I have been listening to this album on repeat since it came out. I've never listened to an album so much over this much time. It just never gets old because there's nothing about that IS old. It's the cutting edge of music right now.
I like what he said after jumpoutthehouse. He understands that there are people that really like this sound and lyrics, he just feels disconnected. Never said “it’s trash”
I think your dad would really enjoy Die Lit! He seems to be into bright melodies and Die Lit has many of those. Also react to some Earl Sweatshirt bro! Love from Nairobi, Kenya.
I love watching these videos especially when I’ve only heard a few songs from the album it definitely help me understand the songs more when they discuss their options about the song. Also I just love Kevin he’s amazing
WAKE UP, ITS THE FIRST OF THE MONTH I like listening to Sky on the first of every month, it’s a weird tradition I’ve been doing since release, it gets my hyped for the new month lmao
used to think of this album as a 6 at initial release but after a whole year its been able to thoroughly grow on me and now its a 9 for me, great album with very few skips
The album was mixed by Fritz, who normally engineers Carti, and it was also mixed by Roark Bailey, who has also worked closely with Carti on past projects.
Always find it wired no one else notices “feel like dying” is a Bon Iver sample just surprised it didn’t come up with one of their albums right behind them
Yeah ive never listened to this album before, but that was straight up a whole Bon Iver song in the background haha. Sampled the vocals and insturmental
I thought this album was so bad but I heard this one song go like D-R-A-C-O and I’m like yoo and jsut decided to give the album a listen and listens to it multiple times, grew on me crazy
I think its awesome that your dad appreciated Feel Like Dyin for not having too much noise to muddy the track because, to me, the entire theme of the album is to not be overpowered with addiction. Specifically towards the opening track where Carti repeats "Never too much" until it becomes engrained in my mind, the album feels like somebody who is in love with sex, drugs, and anything else that can give them pleasure. My take on the later tracks having a clearer mix is that Carti is not in the midst of surrounding himself with hedonistic pleasures, giving his headspace room to think about things on a more personal level. In songs like Stop Breathing or On That Time, the lyrics are simplistic and in a way pointless. But only in the later tracks such as Over and Die4Guy are Carti's lyrics speaking on his life with some level of depth. This all culminates into the closing track in which the vocals are clearer than they have been ever before, and the instrumental is relaxing, making the listener feel the need to actually pay attention to what Carti is saying.
It's funny that your dad mentions how this album reminds him of Metal, and now during his tour of the album Carti performs with a guitarist who plays metal riffs
27:56 when you said you were just dialed in to the music, that’s exactly how you should listen to carti. Listen to his music and picture his voice as more of an instrument and how well his voice pairs with the beats, especially if you’re more used to traditional hip hop. That’s why you were able to vibe with that song so much. Once I got past that I was able to vibe to all of his music. I now get the playboi carti hype and I’m ashamed that it took me this long 🤦🏽♂️

Glad to see Kevin being really critical of an album. Especially with the muddled mixing and production. I've liked WLR since it came out but that's definitely one of its biggest flaws. It's clear though that Kevin really wants to like Carti and this album but those issues are getting in the way of it. I think he would like self-titled or Die Lit a lot more, or he should at least listen to all the big hits on each of them
Idk i never really looked at wlr mixing in that way till they mentioned it, its just the way it was meant to be, the way carti wanted it
the mixing i feel is on purpose and fits the very 8-bit style it gives off
this mixing is definitely intentional to give it more of a raw feeling
i think he would like die lit a lot more honestly
it was mean to be performed live
Very proud of Kevin for taking the "Whole Lotta Red" plunge here with this one. This album is hard for even long-time rap fans to get a grasp of and appreciate, I figure it would be even harder for someone as new to the genre as Kevin is to try and make sense of.
Personally, I look at WLR as Carti's Yeezus, which is saying a lot, considering how chaotic in nature some of Carti's earlier music had been. I really enjoy WLR, but I never argue with people who don't share my sentiment, I TOTALLY understand why they would feel the way they do about it.

Fax and he gives us the cleaner brighter mix in a few songs as well to give some variety
Reaching so hard lol
