He understands interrogation and getting inside someones head (Batman). He can take your psyche and turn it on itself and thats what he tried to do to Gotham before Batman actually stopped him. But he did get Harvey to turn on himself and that in the end was all it took.
That actually leads to the theory that Heath Ledger’s Joker used to be a soldier and also interrogator. Kind of the point, he saw joker as a joke, a stupid person who Doesn’t how much shit of trouble he got himself into. Thus he underestimate him, which the joker exploits

Robin Montgomery yes they did! Nolan said during one of the commentaries segments and also included the jokers background story for how he got his scars with Bruce Wayne father but removed it with the fight scene to tone it down to a PG-13 rating.
So joker changes his story about how he got his scars to each person he tells the story to. With Gamble it was his father who gave him the scars. With Rachel he gave himself the scars for his wife. What do you think the story would have been for Batman if he got the chance to tell him about his scars?
He was about to tell Batman when Joker had the people on the two boats ready to blow the other boat, but Batman said, "No, but I know how you got these." Then shoots the gauntlet fins at Joker.
In the background you can see that the place they're in is a bar. Before the Joker says "a drinker", you can see him glance over to the neon signs and the shelf full of bottles. Little details like this are why this is the best superhero movie of all time.
Oh, like he gathers details for his story from wherever he is in the moment? I also recall him saying “now she can’t even look at me!” while Rachel was struggling to turn her head away.
@@Circuitssmithas someone else pointed out, I think he also tells a story of an abusive father because it's the most likely story to resonate with the person he's talking to.
It's amazing and brilliant how he changes the story every time and you get the feeling they've all happened to him but don't know which one gave him his permanent smile
Man, you can tell why the cast and crew who worked on what is in my opinion the best film ever said they were in awe of him whenever he took the stage and performed. Its just another level of acting this... WOW and alot of it is improvised how he acts with the licking and how he speaks and gets on. HEATH WAS A GENIUS!!!!!!
I just noticed during both scar stories, Joker's eyes look to the sides a lot, that's usually an indication someone is lying, so he's making the stories up on the spot both times.
I see it at him remembering the details, it's a 50/50 chance he's lying or remembering in mob dude's eyes, reinforcing the idea that Joker is unpredictable
Normal people : “The look on the face of someone you kill will haunt you forever...” Joker : *Looks at his victims at their eyes.. “You see, in their... last moment...”
Odd fact, Gambol didn't actually die in this scene, at least not initially. He was meant to have received a "glasgow smile" like joker with the edge of the lip being cut wider. But turns out they just went with it being a fatal stabbing and left it at that.
@IgnatianMystic nope, as mentioned above, it was filmed as him getting a Glasgow smile, but later, they changed their minds and decided that the character died. But they never re-shot the scene, so instead, they went with an awkward edit where it's not really clear what happened.
@@gerv55 The subtitle bone cracking noise heard when the camera cuts to the terrified hostage goon's face after the final "Why so serious?", and the way that Gambol's neck twists to the side as Joker throws his body to the floor, both say otherwise. I'm not saying they didn't originally plan what you described, I'm saying it looks like they re-cut the footage and snuck in a bone crack SFX to make it look like a neck-snapping instead after they scrapped the "Gambol lives" shpiel.
I like how he recreates what his "father" was doing. Not only in his actions and what he is saying, but also in looking at one of Gambol's goons as he said "Why so serious?" just like how his "father" looked at him when putting the knife near the mother and saying that for the first time (Joker is kind of saying it for the first time because he's not quoting something his father said)
It's amazing when you cant see Ledger anywhere in the scene.. you can just picture the real Joker, the acting here is so amazing that you forget that was Ledger on that roll
Something that is ignored a lot in analysis of this scene is Gambols performance. You can see the plain and pure fear on his face. The expression of a man totally at the mercy of his killer. You can see the surprise too, he's Gambol after all. One of Gothams most powerful crime lords, and here he is with the business end of a switch blade in his mouth held by the man he ordered dead only a few days prior.
While we as the viewer, we assume he killed him, theres an interview with the actor saying that they had actually filmed more scenes with him, showing that he had a scar on the left side of his face. This implies that he actually didn't die, but just passed out due to the trauma of having is face cut open like that. That being said, since this is the final product we were given, it sucks that they left the interpretation that he's dead from a face cut. (Edit: a word)
When I was young I tought he just broke the stick to look strong in front of them or that he will break his bones or something, took me years to realize what he asked them to do
I just realised that after Joker said, “Do you wanna know how I got these scars?”, he looks up briefly as though he’s thinking about the story because we know his story was fake after what he said to Rachael at the party.
To everyone complaining about how the joker just cut a hole into Gambol's cheek and he's not gonna die from that, that doesn't make any sense. It's not on camera because it's not rated r, but he obviously slit his throat. I know in the last shot he holds the knife in his mouth, but ask yourself: how much time would it take to take it out of there and hold it in front of the throat? One second? Half a second? Just because it's not shown on camera doesn't mean it didn't happen. Like, Jesus people, use your brains.🙄 Or is that not necessary anymore in movies nowadays?
I thought Joaquin may have piped Heath for the best Joker but the more clips I watch of The Dark Knight the more I am reminded that Heath is the standard for The Joker. That being said Joaquin added a unique and interesting take on the character that will be studied for decades to come.
Let's be real.....Joaquin shot a few people and gave a monologue. That's all. He didn't have any grand level schemes, could barely hold a job as a clown, nowhere near as being the criminal anarchist architect, too mentally unstable to be 10 steps ahead of everyone else, or was certainly not unconditionally ruthless. It was a great "common man turned icon" story with undertones in financial inequality and the ruthless nature of society. But seriously, I would not be scared to see Phoenix's Joker because he only a targeted rich and powerful people and people that weren't "nice to him" as in he let the midget live. Ledger was truly a force of organized unbiased chaos.
(Batman: the killing joke) Joker: "sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I'm going to have a origin, I prefer it to be multiple choice."
@@ThePurpleMushroom okay okay. But did you also know that the joker goon harvey interrogated was the russian tech guy from Antman? And Eric roberts the mob boss also voiced Mongul in the Justice League cartoon
@@Schwartzbruder1 Actually yes, when I saw Antman I think I do remember going like "Hey its that dude from the Batman movie" because he has a very distinct face that that is very recognizable even though he was not one of the main characters in both movies. And it has been a long time since I have seen the Justice League cartoon although I plan on seeing all my childhood cartoons just to see what child me missed. Pretty sure when I go back to see it, I will connect the voices because Eric Roberts has a very unique voice to go along with the physical as well.
What I think would be a rather hilarious take on this scene with how Joker loves fabricating his own backstory is that pause with "My father...waaaaaaaaas..." could've simply been "ah crap, LINE?" in his own head cause he didn't expect to pull a story like that so soon after he got up and almost forgot how to tell it.
his eyes point up when he thinks back to his story as if hes remembering something..as if its real. he also closes his eyes and also you can clearly see emotion in that, so i and alot of body analysts believe this is the real story
you know i had this REALLY random thought on this joker's origins. what if joker is sensetive to the multiverse? he can see into all the universe where he has the scars. all the stories are true. thats why he is crazy. over whelmed by information
This is classic case of be careful what you wish for. He said he wanted the Joker alive to teach him some manners but the look on his face when Joker said, "how bout alive huh," says otherwise.
I like how Joker makes these 3 men have “tryouts”, rather than taking all 3 of them to his side. Not because it benefits him, but it matches with his motivations. To prove people can all be monsters, that people are selfish.
One time, I was working with my colleagues and for fun I started to say this monologue like it was my story. I expectes him to know the reference but i thought he watched the dark knight. He thought i was serious.
When I saw this with my Dad in the theatre, when they dropped The Jokers corpse on the pool table my Dad thought the movie was over and started walking out of the theatre.

I just now realized how many of famous meme came from Joker's dialogue. Gone to soon Heath :( gone too soon :'(
In the background you can see that the place they're in is a bar.
This Joker can NEVER be done again. R.I.P Heath
1:41 that guy is just staring into my soul and I’m scared
Man, you can tell why the cast and crew who worked on what is in my opinion the best film ever said they were in awe of him whenever he took the stage and performed. Its just another level of acting this... WOW and alot of it is improvised how he acts with the licking and how he speaks and gets on. HEATH WAS A GENIUS!!!!!!
I just noticed during both scar stories, Joker's eyes look to the sides a lot, that's usually an indication someone is lying, so he's making the stories up on the spot both times.
That's pretty obvious no matter what way his eyes are going. He's just making shit up
I see it at him remembering the details, it's a 50/50 chance he's lying or remembering in mob dude's eyes, reinforcing the idea that Joker is unpredictable
He might've even told Batman the truth but he got interrupted.
Normal people : “The look on the face of someone you kill will haunt you forever...”
Joker : *Looks at his victims at their eyes.. “You see, in their... last moment...”
Odd fact, Gambol didn't actually die in this scene, at least not initially. He was meant to have received a "glasgow smile" like joker with the edge of the lip being cut wider. But turns out they just went with it being a fatal stabbing and left it at that.
Always confused me that he died from this. Turns out he's supposed to be a returning character until heath passed and they scrapped it
I'm fairly certain that he snapped Gambol's neck in this scene.
*Heath Ledger* is legend
every line is this scene is so memorable. literally everything heath says sticks with you
I like how he recreates what his "father" was doing. Not only in his actions and what he is saying, but also in looking at one of Gambol's goons as he said "Why so serious?" just like how his "father" looked at him when putting the knife near the mother and saying that for the first time (Joker is kind of saying it for the first time because he's not quoting something his father said)
This scene alone just showed how the Joker was one step ahead of everybody. Gives you Chills.
It's amazing when you cant see Ledger anywhere in the scene.. you can just picture the real Joker, the acting here is so amazing that you forget that was Ledger on that roll
We miss you, Heath Ledger.
What did he do at 1:32, and how did it kill that guy instantly?
Gotta love PG-13 violence.
Billy Red jammed the blade to the root of his mouth I assume
While we as the viewer, we assume he killed him, theres an interview with the actor saying that they had actually filmed more scenes with him, showing that he had a scar on the left side of his face. This implies that he actually didn't die, but just passed out due to the trauma of having is face cut open like that. That being said, since this is the final product we were given, it sucks that they left the interpretation that he's dead from a face cut.
(Edit: a word)

Slitting someones throat does not result in an instant death and it's certainly not quiet. Years of Bestgore and Liveleak has taught me that. lol.
Why so Serious ?
@@anv119 appreciate the detail.
When I was young I tought he just broke the stick to look strong in front of them or that he will break his bones or something, took me years to realize what he asked them to do
Smart move to show Joker's body. People won't believe someone is dead unless we've seen the face.
Wait how did Gamble die? I didn't see his neck getting cut
Mislav 2 I think you assume he faints or he’s in so much pain he falls to the floor, then they kill him later.
@@Sl-by1ss It is not known because it is not seen in the movie
@@diegorolon2967 I know, that’s why I said you assume.
I just realised that after Joker said, “Do you wanna know how I got these scars?”, he looks up briefly as though he’s thinking about the story because we know his story was fake after what he said to Rachael at the party.
This is one of my favourite film quotes ever! "Why are you serious son! Why are you being serious!"
i was studying for the exam
"why so serious"
ok fine, i'll just watch youtube
Why so..
Every single word this Joker utters have a purpose.
12 years on and still so god damn fucking epic. It still upsets me that he never even seen his masterpeice completed.
Talked like someone who does use his brain. Respect man/woman.
Except, 'using your brain' didn't help you. Joker didn't slit his throat - he sliced his cheek open.
He’s got the best joker voice 100%. Like the bar is so raised for joker acting new joker actors have to suffer being compared heath
"Let's put a smile on that face."
stellar performance by Heath Ledger
“Why so serious?”
I remember that I used to hate this movie as a kid, because Joker was so frightening that every scene he was in legit gave me chills.
I was actually so excited to hear what kind of story he was gonna tell batman about his scars
heath pulled off one of the best acting performances ever. RIP, never forgotten
That part at the end: One opening, two ends of a broken pool cue, and three guys left. Savage!
The joker has such a calming voice but with such pain and anger and repression against the world
That background music, omg 😱
I love how he looks at both sticks to see which is sharper

0:25 The way he rose from the body bag and stabbed those 2 guys was so cool
This performance makes me genuinely uncomfortable
(Batman: the killing joke) Joker: "sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If I'm going to have a origin, I prefer it to be multiple choice."
I just wanna clarify at 1:32 that he actually stopped the story he was telling because he saw and asked the guy on the floor "why so serious"
I love how he snaps the pool que and says (tryouts)
Heath Ledger is one of the greatest actors that this Century has ever produced
Imagine how much brutal the joker would have been if this film was rated R
0:11 Is that the same dude who appeared on Supergirl as Manchester Black?
You're absolutely right. Good catch!
Yea. And the head gangster showed up in Arrow as Bronze Tiger
@@Schwartzbruder1 Well that one is pretty obvious, the other dude I had to pause and rewind to compare. I saw his eyes and was like "wait a sec..."
This joker is crazy as hell and my all time favourite. He is the real MAD MAN
What I think would be a rather hilarious take on this scene with how Joker loves fabricating his own backstory is that pause with "My father...waaaaaaaaas..." could've simply been "ah crap, LINE?" in his own head cause he didn't expect to pull a story like that so soon after he got up and almost forgot how to tell it.
"Why so serious"
"You wouldn't get it"
his eyes point up when he thinks back to his story as if hes remembering something..as if its real.
he also closes his eyes and also you can clearly see emotion in that, so i and alot of body analysts believe this is the real story
you know i had this REALLY random thought on this joker's origins. what if joker is sensetive to the multiverse? he can see into all the universe where he has the scars. all the stories are true. thats why he is crazy. over whelmed by information
This is classic case of be careful what you wish for. He said he wanted the Joker alive to teach him some manners but the look on his face when Joker said, "how bout alive huh," says otherwise.
The way he says “TRYOUTS” is so freaking terrifying
This movie will always be a masterpiece
0:11 KSI walks in
Joker movie comes out...
And here we go
I like how Joker makes these 3 men have “tryouts”, rather than taking all 3 of them to his side. Not because it benefits him, but it matches with his motivations.
To prove people can all be monsters, that people are selfish.
Wow so deep
the tiny details in this scene.. heath is phenomenal
Health Ledger Jokor and William Defoe Green Goblins are the best villains in their era
I never noticed how there’s a third guy in the back that’s doing jokers “tryouts”
Wow I've seen this movie so many times, and I never noticed he stabs the two dudes either side when he gets up. That's fucking savage.
And he actually pulls himself up using the knives in the dudes ‘bellies.
One time, I was working with my colleagues and for fun I started to say this monologue like it was my story. I expectes him to know the reference but i thought he watched the dark knight. He thought i was serious.

Heath ledger knocked it out the park with his performance in the Dark Knight! 💯
But black dynamite, I sell drugs to the community.
29 seconds in, is it just me that’s watched this a million times and only just noticed he stabs the two people next to the table. mad
Dark knight: My Dad
The joker(2019): My Mom
Dominic Martinez yeah except his mom still allowed his father to abuse her and him on this version just like in Joaquin’s version
If you notice, he misses the shot he was taking, right when he said "They brought the body"
Heath Ledger's portrayal of the joker is etched in your mind. if anyone mentions any Batman film what's the first thing you think of. Not Jack Nicholson or any other actor who's ever played the joker. But Heath Ledger
