An interview with James Spader and Andrew McCarthy at the 1986 MTV Pretty in Pink premiere. Interviewer billed as Fee Waybill. Source: James Spader fansite
Andrew McCarthy was having a tough time during the interview and he skipped the premiere and only went to the after party as he was super anxious..In his new book he states that
Came here to see this clip as I just started reading Andrew’s new book “Brat: An 80’s story” where he writes about this interview in the first chapter (with a photo still included). According to the book, right before this interview (which took place at a club called The Palace), Andrew was at Hamburger Hamlet where he hid at the bar drinking “more than a few straight vodkas on the rocks” throughout the premiere of Pretty in Pink which was held across the street at Mann’s Chinese Theatre. This interview was at the after party. He writes, “I swayed back and forth, drunk and anxious, blowing cigarette smoke and trying not to appear frozen by the few benign questions that were lobbied my way. In a career of bad interviews, this one was particularly inept. It didn’t matter. The movie was about to become a hit-and success would land hard upon me.”
It’s funny now thinking he had no prom date in HS. True or false I can see how we all are portrayed so different in real life as a teenager. They became so famous andrew could have had a big wart on his nose lol and women threw themselves at them. My sister was in love with Andrew McCarthy. Of course I fell for the bad guy. James Spader. His character was secretly in love with Molly Ringwald’s. And that’s really how HS was. She was considered poor and plain. Back in the 80s rich and poor kids were thrown together. I never had a car in school. I would drive my sisters beat up truck to school sometimes lol she graduated two years ahead of me and had a yellow rusted chevy with a rusted passenger floor that had a hole to throw out beer cans. 🤦♀️and it would backfire when shifting gears. I didn’t care. I parked where the cool kids parked. Beats the bus! 😂
Andrew was an embryo all his life tho...or at least looked like one. Just kidding, but I read a Pretty in Pink Review where a critic said that...Andrew McCarthy looks like an adult fetus...can't get it of my head. He seems cool in his interviews, but his character Blane positively sucks in my opinion.
No. Twas a much worser time. Clearly so. Within many ways. The none smoking policy of nowadays is healthy and great. Times art better for everybody, rather. Than before.
Love how Siouxsie and the Banshees' Cities in Dust is playing in the background! Can't imagine how much fun those 2 actors were having right smack dab in the middle of the 80s promoting a movie in which they portrayed teenagers and were actually their mid 20s!
i am screaming. did no one else catch James Spader's drunken filthy joke when the interviewer said you can't say "liquor"?? cuz right after that he drunkenly shouted "it won't be liquour (lick her), what about kiss her then?.." so awkward. so filthy. so drunk.
He was sooo young then. And presently everything is so politically incorrect. Presently you say that now, you would no longer making films and TV shows. As for me I'm still madly in love with James Spader Andrew McCarthy. Life goes on move on. Andrew McCarthy is now a great director for The Blacklist and James Spader has the main character in the Blacklist and they're doing fine and the great entertainers for over 30 years.👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@marciakittredge4064 James is still that way, he was doing one of the late night shows , and there were girls in sundresses (for some reason) on the front row, and the topic came up. James said it was such a shame that you couldn't comment about how nice the girls looked in their sundresses without people getting offended. He is *VERY* non PC culture from what I gather, and I love him.
I love the 80's and the hole bratpack crew! I can honestly say I was born in the wrong era.! I would've enjoyed the hell out of the 80's.! And Andrew could of been my prom date.! Lol love him!
+SongWriter111 Oregon The 80's were absolutely amazing, when you stepped outside your door it felt like magic. Everything from the fashion, music, interior/house design, cartoons, larger than life imaginative and creative and cozy commercials, the sitcoms, horror & fantasy films, videogames, I could go on and on.....The 2000's are a complete shit storm in comparison. Early early 90's were pretty awesome, but something happened during the mid, and the late 90's? Just awful. If I could blast back I'd go circa 84'-89 and live it on insta' repeat!
That’s what makes the interview genuinely good. The interviewer was a singer from The Tubes band and not just an MTV host. See “Talk To Ya Later”, The Tubes. The 80’s Rocked! .
Phoebe K For me, if only I was born when both of them were that dreamy.. And drunk Lmao 🤣 Or if I was in kindergarten. These two would be my first crushes. XD
Plot twist...This was actually Reddington's first infiltration into Hollywood's criminal ring. He was falsely befriending Andrew to see what he could possibly exploit from him later on, but he had to become an actor in the process.
u could smoke on tv then (these 2 guys are very cool btw) ...now u cant do this, cant say that ...and yet the world is in a worse shape than than the 80s.
Well, if you look past the AIDS epidemic, (Reagan did) and the "trickle-down economic plan" that literally* created a new word for the dictionary: "latch-key kids". The rich didn't trickle their tax-breaks down, and previous sahm's had to work. It sucked, but at least we had PONG, and cable: 15 channels!! It was mind-blowing!!!!😉 😂😂😂✌
If you like James here, see the movie Stargate (1994). MTV ruled in the 80’s. Great music and video. The MTV host here was the lead singer for the band The Tubes,,, see “Talk To Ya Later”, The Tubes on RUclips. Nice fun 80’s tune
Funny the person who didn't know MTV was around in the 80s is a "One Direction" fan.. go figure! Obviously it was around in the 80s, and they played these things called MUSIC VIDEOS and the music was AMAZING (unlike nowadays). Check it out sometime!
I knew they had MTV in the 80’s. And I wasn’t even born in the 80’s! (Born in early 90’s) How I know they had MTV in the decade before I was born? I listened to “1985” by Bowling For Soup. 😊 Anyway. James and Andrew were sooo adorable when they were in their 20’s and thirties. Still cute even in their 40’s and 50’s. In my opinion.
James Spader and Andrew McCarthy both went to boarding school! I think they were playing themselves only Spader was not a jerk in real life, and Andrew seemed to be very shy.
Neil M,,, The interviewer was the lead singer of the band “The Tubes”, not your everyday MTV host. See “Talk To Ya Later”, The Tubes. Great song, definitely 80’s.
Wow. The interviewer comes off as so phony, so condescending...it's amazing. "Don't say liquor! And did I mention how very expensive my Italian jacket is?" My eyes hurt from all the rolling...
It’s because he wasn’t JUST an MTV host, he was the lead singer for the band “The Tubes”. The guys new him as that. ruclips.net/video/H-rEVVAw3-0/видео.html
You're kidding right, you do realise how young he is here? It was such a different time as well and I'm sure he's raised his children not to be offended by bullshit as petty as that.
Why is this so insanely cool?!? They're both smoking, drinking, and clearly having an amazing time together. I *MISS* the 80s!!
Omg I know right
It definitely was an easier time.
Andrew McCarthy was having a tough time during the interview and he skipped the premiere and only went to the after party as he was super anxious..In his new book he states that
Jade, Yeah, I miss the brain cells I had.
Right. Very cool. No bs times. 70’s - 80’s.
James is the most beautiful man i have ever come across. I love his sweet smile, voice and beahvior
Tom Felton from Harry Potter reminds me of James they look some what a like.
James Spader always played "the asshole" really good! He was great in Less Than Zero. One of my favorite movies!
@Barrier Boy Yeah, he did play the "poor little bitch" in the end to a T. LOL.👍🏼
Spader was great in Boston Legal

Wow thank you for this very cool comment! I’m amazed that he mentioned this interview.

Anyone else here wondering how Andrew even made it to the party after '90mins of downing straight vodka on the rocks' .... ?
Yep. I just read that & looked this up
James is adorable.
I find you on all vedio of James.
James Spader has always been a good actor.
I DON’T think he was ’acting’ here.
What's funny is as good as he is/was, he cared more about his record collection/music and only took roles to basically pay his bills.
If I wasn't an embryo at the time of this interview, I would have been andrews prom date
Andrew was an embryo all his life tho...or at least looked like one. Just kidding, but I read a Pretty in Pink Review where a critic said that...Andrew McCarthy looks like an adult fetus...can't get it of my head.

@@marier4702 update - i'm meeting him tomorrow
I LOVE how James is thoroughly enjoying watching his drunk friend!
I miss the way everybody was so laid back about everything back then.Just smoking away on MTV..Great footage of a bygone time.
So correct, great observation. I miss that most compared to today. Everybody was laid back then, it definitely was a different time.

I LOVE James Spader. Awesome then. Even more awesome now
Andrew coudn't get a date for his prom? Those girl were nuts then...

Pretty in Pink is such a lovely film.80s movies rocks

James Spader is such a bad ass.
Both of them are gorgeous!
Andrew McCarthy couldn't get a date??? Someone build me a time machine, I'll be his date.

the 80's were amazing. Best movies, tv shows and music, my prom unfortunately was in 91
I grew up in the 80's & I've been told I look like both of 'em. Had Spader's face & Andrew's hair. But I'm 6'3, so that was the only comparison.
Oh my gosh how I long to be back in the 80s...
This looks like the most awkward interview ever XD
That’s what makes the interview genuinely good. The interviewer was a singer from The Tubes band and not just an MTV host. See “Talk To Ya Later”, The Tubes. The 80’s Rocked!
.
these two guys also appeared in the film Mannequin! love those guys McCarthy and Spader, my 80's icon ! woooooosh !
Also together in Less Than Zero.
Lady in pink too
Hahahahaha James Spader is classic . Love him
I get the feeling that they were both kinda, really drunk during this interview. And, I would have loved to be at the premiere.
That interviewer is the singer from the tubes !
they are totally loaded!
He couldn't get a date!? Oh my god.. That breaks my heart
80s party's looked doped af

Siousie and the Banshees in the background completes this images of utter perfection
Gosh u can't say liquor on MTV. What happened? I miss those good ole days
Plot twist...This was actually Reddington's first infiltration into Hollywood's criminal ring. He was falsely befriending Andrew to see what he could possibly exploit from him later on, but he had to become an actor in the process.
Both guys are hot as hell, but Spader´s Steff Mckee was and always will be my weakness.
I'd love to see more. Pretty in Pink is my movie.
Oh my God, this is adorable.
favourited right away.
Those two are just way too adorable. And so badass smoking and all. Hahahaha. Gotta love the 80s.
Siouxsie and the Banshees playing in the background!!!
Who else is here after reading the first chapter of Brat: An 80’s Story?
Ooh I haven’t read it! How is it? Is this interview mentioned?
@@Parlezkate Yes! And after I read that I had to see it for myself lol. He says he was trashed lol.

The look Andrew gave that guy at the end... 🤣
What a wild 80s
It's almost 40 years ago
HOW DID ANDREW NOT HAVE A DATE OMG 💞🥵
andrew's facial expression at 0:52 priceless. haha.
After watching this, I think I got pregnant!
Nice ending to the movie in your own way. Cool 😎

You can tell McCarthy is so East Coast and doesn't like interviews. He was always a bit put out by them. His face and tone always gave this away.
This interview was so painful to watch.... haha
Top notch cast.
I CAN'T BELIEVE ANDREW SMOKES! GOSH.
dad, it's your friends
Buddy thought he was gonna get the best interview in the world lol and he did lol
James said.. If not liquor (lick her) then kiss her 😄😄😍. It went unnoticed
Two hottest guys 💖💗🧡💛💚💚💚
Actually, apparently this isn't an interviewer at all. He's a musician from The Tubes (She's A Beauty). That makes more sense.
Steph acts just like Steph!
How in hell he coudn't get a date??
james was so hot ! Here and in Tuff Turf😎 👍 💞

Hey what is that song in the background? You said it's by Siouxsie and the Banshees but what's the title?
If I'm correct, it's Cities in Dust
Jilian B It is "Cities in Dust." You can hear it very clearly at 0:51.
..he was joking lol ..

omg this is fantastic! thankyou for uploading

Love this interview they are them self . Best movie love Andrew
MTV was launched in 1981.
SO weird to watch this in 2020 - I forgot that smoking used to be “cool”
When people used to smoke to mellow from all the alcohol. 😂
Drunk and stone
Just some advice, look something up before asking a question in the comments. You'll get your answer without a lot of talk about it.
Wow. Everyone knows that MTV is the 80's.
The Tubes lead singer! LOL
Amazing video. Thanks so much for posting. Did you tape it from a VHS? Whered ya get it from?
Siouxsie and The Banshees at the background?
