Thanks for watching! I'm glad that there's still plenty of interest in GT2 content like this. I've made a text document that covers all of the tuning tricks shown in this video, and more. Check it out here: docs.google.com/document/d/1kt8BvShge9ZTH7hnUTsI46WRcf7XPfvEsMPjc4twAm4/edit?usp=sharing Some extra notes and tips that didn't make it into the video: - On original hardware, PAL has some bugs that causes some cars to stutter while accelerating. This is most noticeable during a Test Run before a race. It also makes some cars, like the Ford GT90, much more likely to spin out. As such, I always recommend using DuckStation and Silent's 50 FPS code if you plan on playing on PAL. - pez2k's GT2+ mod fixes the Acura racing mod issue on NTSC-U, along with various other bugs. The complete version also adds new content like prize cars in manufacturer, rally and national league races. If you're going to play on emulator, NTSC 1.2 with GT2+ is the way to go. Link in the description. - If you're using a controller with an emulator, I suggest using the analog sticks and making sure that analog mode is enabled. The controls are much less twitchy this way. If you're forced to use digital controls, prioritize suspension upgrades to reduce weight transfer by lowering the ride height, stiffening the stabilisers or raising the front camber. (see KingLich's reply below for analog acceleration/brake controls in DuckStation) - DuckStation's analog sensitivity settings are very high by default. I suggest lowering it to 120% if you want finer control of your car's turning. - Another way to get analog acceleration / brake trigger controls in DuckStation is to use an input profile. In-game, map acceleration and brake to right analog up / right analog down. Then, in DuckStation, make a new input profile, unmap L2 and R2, then map your controller's left trigger to right analog down and the right trigger to right analog up. Right-click on GT2 in the games list and set the input profile to the new one you made. - To clarify, the licence test times are different between regions. While a few PAL tests were made easier, many, especially in IB, are more difficult. The rally tests are also more difficult than NTSC's. NTSC's IA-3 with the NSX on Apricot Hill is particularly challenging from my experience, but PAL is more forgiving and gives an extra 200 milliseconds for gold. Hard to say whether one region has an advantage over the other. - Licence test results don't count towards 100% completion, so you don't actually need golds in every test unless you want the prize cars. The Event Synthesizer does count towards completion, however, so you'll need to obtain the Super licence. - Soft springs will allow the car to go over bumps and curbs much more smoothly. Combined with high downforce, it can create 'ground effects' where the car stays glued to the road after a sudden elevation change. A lot of cars benefit from softer springs, especially lightweight MR's like the Elise and Stratos. I have another shorter video on my channel demonstrating ground effects. - To go more into detail on dampers: the bound and rebound only matter for changing how the car reacts to bumps. Stiffening the rebounds won't make the car easier to turn, unlike later games. It's best to ignore them and tune the bound and rebound together like I did in this video. Stiff rear dampers can improve mid-corner grip and turning in many cars, while if the front dampers are too stiff, the car will lose grip more easily. Set the front dampers to 1 on Red Rock and Test Course to prevent loss of grip. - Front camber is extremely useful for 'glueing' the car to the road and increasing grip. Many MR's benefit from 3.6 or more front camber. Try using up to 6.0 if the car feels too twitchy and loses grip easily. Be aware, however, that it can slightly reduce braking distances if set too high. - Setting the rear toe to 0.20 improves mid-corner grip at no real downside (straight line traction isn't impacted like later games), while -0.20 front toe gives the car a sharper turn radius. Minus is toe-out, positive is toe-in. Rear toe-out (-0.20) can also help the car turn, but it'll likely just cause the car to skid instead. - The only special event races that require specific types of cars are the drivetrain races (FF, FR, MR, 4WD), manufacturer events, and the turbo and NA races. Everything else can be completed with any car as long as it's under the hp limit. It's hard to say whether this was a developer oversight or not, but it's up to you if you want to obey the event 'rules' or just bring whatever car you want into each race. - Turns out the Impreza Type-RA Ver. VI sedan is faster than the coupé when tuned to 295hp. The coupé Ver. VI has a higher max hp when fully tuned though. - I really underrated the Supra SZ-R. The problem with the NA Supra's in this game is, they have really narrow power bands and they feel underpowered when driving in automatic. With engine balancing, the gear trick and gearing up past redline, however, you can squeeze a lot of power out of the SZ-R. - A fully tuned ZZ-S Coupe gets 279hp, and when the gear trick and ride height trick are applied, it's easily one of the best 295hp cars in the game. Thanks to its light weight and MR drivetrain, its turning ability is still fantastic after applying the ride height trick. - If you want the Stratos without having to play prize car roulette, you have two options: you can trade the car from my 'TuningNightmare' save in my starting saves folder or, if you're on emulator, you can complete the Apricot Hill endurance, make a save state on the screen before the prize money screen (the one that shows the lap times with your car in the background), check your garage to see which car you won, and load the save state if you didn't get the Stratos. - If you don't want to wait for the Cappuccino to appear in the Suzuki used dealership, the Lancia Y is a very good choice for the Lightweight K cup. You can also win the Yaris/Vitz from the Compact Car cup and use that, it's a decently strong choice. - The R30 Silhouette is already one of the best 591hp cars, but if you want something stronger, the Esprit GT1 is fantastic. It's MR though so you'll need to crank up the front camber and LSD Decel. to keep it stable. The Altezza LM has a 50% chance of being a prize car in the Rome 2 hour endurance and it's probably the best 591hp car in the game. The TT LM has ridiculous acceleration and is a reliable choice, while the RX-7's from the Mazda dealership special section and the International Championships are as good as you'd expect. - There's an old website that can convert GT2 codes from one region to another, it's available on the Wayback Machine. I've put the link in the description. You can use it for the codes I show in the video to make them compatible with your game's region. - To explain the ride height trick in more detail: two things are happening at once. First, the car's center of gravity is being moved forward, causing the understeer and shorter braking distances you see in the clip I used. Second, because the car is pointing downwards, the game thinks the car is going downhill and boosts its speed accordingly. The opposite will happen if you set the front high and the rear low, as the car will be pointing upwards and will lose acceleration as if it were going uphill. - When doing the gear trick on very powerful cars with heavy wheelspin, you can instead push both 1st and 2nd all the way to the left, then always launch in 2nd. It can be very useful, but the main drawback is that you can't really use 1st gear for slow corners since it'll be too fast to give 2nd gear enough power. Try it on the R30 Silhouette. - To really make use of the gear trick on cars with narrow power bands, you can make 1st and the third-last gear the closest. This is very specialized though and powerful cars will suffer on high-speed tracks. 6-speed cars like the Corvette can make good use of it though. - If you set Auto Setup to higher than 1 when doing the trick, you'll get longer gears, but they won't be as close. This can be useful on 4WD's to give them more top speed using the regular close gear pattern. For the closest gears, you're better off sticking with Auto Setup 1, as it causes a noticeable hit in acceleration with higher settings. - The method of applying the gear trick shown in the CR-X example (setting the external final to 2.500) is the "optimal" method for best acceleration. For most cars though, you don't need to over-complicate it. Setting final all the way to the right, then setting Auto Setup to 1, then moving final back to the left until has top speed and arranging the individual gears, is much less time-consuming and will will almost always result in faster acceleration than the stock gears. I'll add more here as it comes to mind. Thanks for watching and reading!
Users of DuckStation If you want to be able to use the trigger pedals on your controllers, choose NeGcon as your controller on emulator's settings. You will be able to both have analog steering AND gas/break. VERY helpful on licenses. Buttons will change however, you might get confused on menus. But once you get past the game will be so much more enjoyable.
I'm blown away by this video. I only made it 75% there, didn't read the additional write-up yet, but we already, from a blank save, had a blast playing GT2 with my girlfriend.
To the guy on Reddit a year ago saying this is only for a tiny niche audience, I’m here on Thanksgiving ‘23 and I’m thankful for TeaKanji! Playing GT2 for the first time in 20+ years.
It's really reassuring to hear this, thank you. That Reddit comment was the first piece of feedback I got for any of my GT content, and while I knew I made something that needed to be made, it did make me feel uncertain about whether I invested myself into something that nobody else cared about. I was fully expecting for it to get a couple thousand views at most, and that would be that, I'd move onto something else. Thankfully I did eventually realize that there was an audience for this, they just weren't being catered for until now. Have fun with your playthrough!
Don't often leave comments on RUclips videos but boy this video was fantastic. As a big fan of GT and GT2 being a favorite of mine, this was so enlightening to see so many little things I didn't know about the game in general. And I particularly love that you left so many different cars for people to try out as well as comments on how there's different ways to enjoy the game. This was great work, and thank you for putting it together.
Ah, thank you! Glad you appreciated it. Yeah, I think that's one of the nice things about the game, the amount of freedom it gives to the player. A side effect of the game's rushed development, but it makes the game feel very relaxing to play. Nothing's stopping you from bringing a Lancer Evo into the wagon cup, but you can always just bring your own wagon if you want more of a challenge.
@@TeaKanji For a long time I didn't know that you shouldn't have been allowed to bring just whatever car into whichever tournament more or less, but it's been fun learning more about how much of a beautiful mess this game is lol On a personal level, my last run or so have always involved bringing a car that was always the correct type that the racing tells you to do. And I've noticed that, without a lot of extra modifications to the car, being about 100 or so HP under the limit always made the race at least more challenging, and I'd definitely be up for making it more challenging next time I hit up the game again.
@@arcanel3166 Yeah, I feel you. While making the video I did a few test runs using the starter saves and cheat codes, it made the races a lot more intense. With the AI codes, you need to be right on the HP limit and/or have super soft tyres to keep up since the AI will blast through corners. Had to be a lot more selective with the races I entered since there was an actual risk of losing and having to try again. If you want a proper challenge, in my saves folder there's one called "SizeMatters" where you start with a Cappuccino and a Stagea wagon. See how far you can make it with just those two. The Stagea actually corners surprisingly well but you can defintiely feel its weight on the straights.
@@TeaKanji Ohhh, a Cap and a Stagea. That sounds like a fun challenge. Might have to give that a go some time. I feel like almost every race feels possible minus the All-Star championships and that kind of race, but definitely something worth going for! I like the concept haha. It'd be my first time playing on an emulator proper, whenever I get to do something like that, and I've been dying to play some of the older GT's again since it's been a long while. Gonna be even more fun trying to do this with digital controls as I've never ever played a racing game without them.
@@TeaKanji no one has done a video on how to drive in the rally races. I'm having trouble figuring out what to do I go flying all over the place. if you make one ill be happy.
We replaying GT2 recently and came across your guide, really invaluable stuff here so thank you! It's so much fun to play the game having a better understanding of tuning/parts as an adult than when I did as a kid
First time trying the GT series considering I never had a playstation growing up. These have been a huge help in not getting frustrated & confused in some parts. A big thank you for making these! It's easy to see why people praise this series so much
Just recently found this, geez. Amazing job on this guide. Nice to see there's still content made for GT2. As for the dampers ... they are ... weird. I've tested them quite a bit, and from what I can tell, higher settings allow the wheels to move a lot more quicker. You can check this out by grabbing any car with adjustable suspension, taking it to Red Rock Valley or Test Track, setting the dampers to 10 and going around the banking. On the replay, the wheels will be bouncing up and down quite quickly, and so will the chassis/car itself. If you set the dampers to 1 and do the exact same, the wheels will still bounce, but won't move as fast, same with the chassis, it won't bounce as aggressively. It will be considerably more controlled. This is considerably more noticeable on PAL's 25 FPS (Since the physics engine is tied to the frame rate which ... isn't ideal. Another reason to use the High FPS code). This leads me to believe that higher settings = higher damper speeds = lower damping rates, which means the damper settings are indeed reversed. Personally, I usually roll with a setting of 2 on both Bound and Rebound. That seems to let the dampers do enough work to keep the car stable. On the cases where the car bounces too much (Stiff springs, Test Track/Red Rock Valley/Midfield), a setting of 1 helps ... or just softening the springs, that works too. For Rallying, a slightly higher setting can help, 4 or so.
Thank you! Wow, that answers a lot of questions, thanks for the info on dampers. When I was making this guide, I think I focused a bit too much on how dampers affect understeer/oversteer than their effectiveness over bumps. I'll need to try this again when I'm back home next week and see what's going on. 2 / 2 sounds about right; that's what I went for when I was testing different settings for the Lancer Evo V RS trying to see what worked best. I'll update that section in the pinned comment in any case. Thanks again!
This is a great video. The car settings tips can be used for every racing game as well. I find it remarkable that a game from the 1990s was able to create such an accurate simulation.
Thank you! Hehe, some tips do apply to racing games in general, but a lot of stuff is GT2-specific because of how broken its physics can be. That's part of what makes it fun though, and I agree, it's very well put-together for its time.
This video's production and quality FAR exceeds your sub count. There is so much untapped potential here. Please keep making videos, you have a bright future.
I recently found I had never played this version. I am so glad to see there are so many folks willing to put things together like this. It has helped me a lot. Music is awesome. You would probably like the band Air.
It's great seeing an active community for these games for sure. Glad you enjoyed it! I'm familiar with Air yeah, I've a couple of their songs in my playlists. I love that sort of late-90's/early-00's downtempo and trip hop, Mezzanine by Massive Attack is one of my favourite albums.
I'm playing GT2 on my PSP and this guide helped me to know how to progress further, although I did know about the lack of suspension limits and stuff but it was still a good entry in this 1 hour long guide, thanks a bunch
Thanks brother, thanks to your work I can finally challenge my childhood friend against whom I always lost as a child. Now at 33, we challenge each other every Thursday and the situation is very different! Thank you God bless you for this work! 🙏 We will continue to challenge each other in gran turismo 2 up to the retirement home!
just by watching this guide and game made me remember that i and my older brother had a great times, nice vid dude, i always looking for vid about GT2 like this
Incredible video. I player this game sooo much as a kid that i new almost everything in this video, still doing some different runs every year and trying different things. Just finished an AE-86 Trueno only run and you gave me great ideas for next runs. Thank you so much
Thank you! That sounds like an interesting run. The AE86 really punches above its weight in GT2, even though it can't get many power upgrades. I've been doing research into GT1 and it's the same in that game too, you can beat a bunch of early game events using only the AE86. Hope the guide helps out in any case!
One thing I love about GT2 is that the game encourage you to skid! You may be slowed a bit but it's really fun to drive that way and learn how to control the car, also didnt punish you for doing it unlike GT1. Always spins! Playing GT2 after finished GT1, I slowly learn not to fear when I hear the tyre scream.
Hehe, yeah indeed. GT1 desperately needed LSD adjustment to reduce turn-in oversteer but it was nowhere to be found. Turning while braking was simply not an option. I considered doing a GT1 guide, but I find the tuning severely limited in that game. GT2 is a lot more forgiving, especially with softer racing tyres and downforce. Tuning a RWD around sports tyres is a lot of fun too though. The Supra RZ with sports tyres and 500hp drifts like crazy with the right setup, but it still stays on the road quite well. Edit: revisiting this comment because I had no idea how useful front camber was back then. It's the exact solution for reducing turn-in oversteer in GT1, and is also extremely useful in GT2.
I’m 25, played and loved every GT from GT3 to 7, believe me or not, never played GT2, I just finished my Sunday cup with my used GTS R32, so basically my first experience and I’m starting to love it, wish me luck, thanks for this guide!
This guide is truly such a gem! You've helped me tremendously fr! Thank you for putting in so much effort into making this for us Drivers out here. Now I have a lil bit more confidence in tuning some of the more beefy cars. You deserve this cookie~ 🍪
Epic guide! Lots of great information that I hadn't yet heard of, having played GT2 since 2000. Towards the end it even gets a bit emotional, I like that. And props for mentioning the TVR Speed 12 - the most menacing sound & untapped potential.
Thank you! Glad it showed something new, even for GT2 veterans. Yeah, this video was a huge passion project for me at the time, and I really wore my heart on my sleeve in the outro. Absolutely agree on the Speed 12, there's more to come for that one, I plan to go in-depth on how to tune it in a future video.
I just had to comment on this masterpiece of content and straightforward tips and lessons for a game that gave me a great childhood and still love playing to this day. Thank you!
very helpful video, i recently started playing gt2 and got around 20 hours on it. I used the Denso Supra i earned to get some money at the All Night endurance race and bought a viper gts that i ended up tuning and giving the racing modification which i couldn't for the life of me drive because of the tuning i didn't understand.
wow nice tutorial as a kid i don`t understand how to tune cars correctly but now it makes totally sense i`ll try it and the cars drive much better thanks man
i learned a lot, well made. thank you so much. currently playing this game on my miyoo mini plus- having so much fun! now because of this guide i will enjoy the game more, finally have an idea to discover the full potential of the car because of tuning. tyty!!!! :D
Just come from your latest GT1 video.. I'm literally just watching this for my love of the GT series, and I must say you've done such an incredible job.. I love this sort of content 🤌🏻
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them. This GT2 guide was my first time making a video of this sort, so it's very rough around the edges compared to the GT1 guide, but hopefully it's still a decent viewing experience. By the way, I checked out your channel, and I love how the first thing I'm greeted with is my favourite Loathe song. Nice covers, keep it up.
@TeaKanji I watched it in full and its very informative and I have no criticisms for you, it's an amazing guide and it'll help new and experienced players for sure! Looking forward to more videos like this! (And more like the Miata beating 1100hp drag cars) Ahh thank you so much!!! They're from my hometown, one of my favourite bands! 😁
Ah, that's good to hear, thank you. Yep, there'll be more GT2 content for sure, I have some more challenge races planned before I'll go and do another tuning tutorial, because there's a lot of things I missed out on or overlooked in this guide. Want to make sure I've practiced tuning a bunch of different types of cars before I go out giving advice. That's cool about Loathe by the way, guess I should re-listen to I Let It In and It Took Everything, it's been a while.
@TeaKanji I look forward to seeing them! I appreciate the replies too, not many content creator's respond, so thank you! And absolutely you should haha, I just bought a baritone guitar to play some of them 😅
Racing Lagoon community needs u. Got a fan translation last year, basically if Squaresoft made Gran Turismo, but RPG. No tune guide out there but certain it takes a lot from this game
It's so cool that the classic Gran Turismo games are getting lots of extra content through mods and challenge runs. The second game was my favourite, as the car list greatly expanded on the original game, but most events didn't feature the entry restrictions that would come about in GT3 and GT4. And because of that, it gives you practically unlimited freedom when choosing which cars to race.
great video dude. Wish i was there when the forum existed, tho i was 4 at the time and started playing GT2 at 6 years old XD im subbing and looking foward to more content from you. and i hope one day maybe GT2 gets a revival with a crazy mod or smth
Thank you! I should have a new video out in the coming weeks; I'm currently working on a Gran Turismo 3 Ultimate Guide. It's going to be a big one due to how complex its GT Mode and driving mechanics are. I've already written a 150-page guide that'll accompany it; hopefully it won't disappoint.
There's a GT2plus mod that re-adds cut content and fixes bugs in the game. It's available from GTPlanet and comes as 'complete' (both content and fixes) and 'lite' (fixes only). I'd personally want the GT engine reverse-engineered so it can be played on PC without emulation, but that requires skill and dedication.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! There's a lot of things I think I'd change if I were to re-make the guide again, but maybe I'm just being too hard on myself.
I bought the Escudo, but ... as a veteran of GT 1, I still love the FTO LM and use that instead. I even compete in a local event with it and lost spectacularly against ... the elephant in the room. Most of the contenders are using that since there's no limit for the 4wd class. As for the FR class ... I pick the blue FD RX7 GT-C. I just love that car's handling and looks. With it I got up to the semifinals. Got eliminated by a Viper though. I have a very basic knowledge to tune the cars at that time. Mostly just adjusting the auto gear and lower the ride height. I did use the manual for the FR due to the obvious reason. I just glad that this game still gave us the FTO LM. My good times in the series continue with that car.
That's really cool that there's local GT2 events, though it's a shame there aren't house rules banning the Escudo. It creates a scenario of, why use anything else? FTO LM is still fantastic though, I believe my fastest 591hp lap times were set with that, the Esprit GT1 and Altezza LM. Golding the IA licence is very painful, but it's a worthwhile reward.
@@TeaKanji It was one rare event. But the prize is a steering wheel for the PS 1. I'm probably one of the only few who didn't use the Escudo. I actually found someone who also use the FTO LM. An older guy, probably late twenties or early thirties. Unlike me, he manages to get to the quarter finals before got demolished by the elephant. The final is kinda cool though, since it was between a father and his son. In the end, I believe the father let his son won since he is kinda leading the whole race but suddenly miss the apex and the son's car passed him at second to last corner. Yep ... the way to get the sweet FTO LM is very hard. I forget which one but I keep on failing in one of the course. I had one of my friend do that one test for me. It took him like 10 attempts, whilst I keep on failing.
@@neogriff Ah, okay, that makes sense; that's quite cute. When I was doing research for the GT1 guide, I came across SportWagon's GT2toXS site and there was a gallery of him and a few friends doing a GT2 tournament. Felt oddly nostalgic scrolling through it. For me, it was the NSX at Apricot Hill test that I really struggled with, but I was playing on NTSC-U at the time so its times were much more difficult. That, and the final GT-One Race Car uphill test. Was also playing on a PSP with the D-pad which probably didn't help either. Took at least a few hours to get through the whole licence, but it was satisfying at the end.
I was 9 at the time when the game launched, I didn't have a PC (let alone an internet connection) therefore I learnt so much about cars from GT2 alone, however it took lots of trials and errors. It was quite challenging game for a kid. This video is such a great guide, shame it wasn't around 20 years ago. I wonder if the gear trick works on other GTs too.
Thank you! Yeah, the open-endedness of GT Mode is a blessing and a curse; there's no hand-holding, but it made it much more confusing for kids like us back then. I remember I used to buy the Honda CRX and get stuck on Sunday Cup. The gear trick works in GT3 as well yeah. When doing it, you need to slide the Auto Setup all the way to the right before going to the left, or else it won't give long gears. The layout is a bit confusing at first, but the idea is the same: 1st all the way to the left, 5th all the way to the right, 6th a little slower, and space out the gears in between. Just need to set TCS to 0 or 1 so it doesn't slow down your launch. I'm working on a GT3 guide right now because I think its early game is even more brutal than GT2's, I'll show how to do the gear trick there along with a bunch of other stuff.
Thank you! Yeah, the Alfa's are surprisingly good FF's; I think the 156 16v was slightly better than the 24v? I remember one being a bit faster than the other for 295hp.
I just 100% GT1 and going for GT2. I never understood how exactly each and every tune option works, but you expertly explain what it does. I'll try to tame fully tuned Supra, GT-R and GTO to see if I'm successful.
Glad to help! For the Supra, I recommend keeping it around 493hp or below, and using the Castrol Tom's or Cdma One Supra for high powered events. It gets very unstable when you push past that point, and the JGTC's have much better downforce and turning ability. The GT-R and GTO should be a bit easier though, there's a tune somewhere in this comment section for a fully tuned R34 that someone needed help with.
My man, thanks to your videos my revisiting of the emulated PSX games of Gran Turismo has been pretty awesome. I have almost the 60% of GT2 before seeing your guide and I am thinking of starting all over again hahaha. I loved your GT1 guide and your GT2 guide let me know how detailed were the upgrades between games. I can't find the "Thanks" button anywhere, pls let me buy you a beer 🍻 or a coffee ☕
I still remember my first playthrough for this game. I was young kid with no idea what I was doing, bought my first used car with 63hp power and struggle to win Tahiti Road, but I didnt give up. I grinded that race to oblivion to earn money for upgrades and started winning races. My favourtite car in the game was Mitsubishi Lancer VI evo. Anyways, the video is brilliany, thanks for that deep dive, Im dowloading the rom rn😀
Thank you so much for this guide, wow what a great job you did!! 👏 I don't know if this little trick is known : in automatic transmission, we can force downgrade by pressing on the Triangle button.
Yeah, that's true. I was thinking of mentioning the mods at the start of the video, but I decided to keep it simple and only mention the original versions. I'll put a link in the description for it though, since having the Acura racing mods on NTSC along with the other stuff is quite nice. Thanks!
I can only stand up and applaud, that video is awesome. Now, when will we see similar videos for GT3 and GT4...wait, there are? Well, excuse, I'm off binge watching.
Thank you! The gear setup examples here were a bit basic; I didn't show how you can sacrifice 1st and/or 2nd gear for more top speed in FF's, or how you can widen the gears using a higher auto setting for 4WD's. If you're interested, there's some better examples in some of my GT2 challenge videos.
Thanks for the heart, I’m tired of modern aaa publishers trying to release buggy games with live service and pay 2 win micro transactions so that’s why I now play older games, it isn’t for nostalgia after all I’m only in my teens, it because developers at least gave you a finished game packed with content.😢
Super useful and great tips. Esp LSD tuning; the Lancer Evo as an ideal 4WD; having RR in automatics and wheel spin in first gear, and the set up at the end of the video; Oh and the weight reductions. Thanks a lot!
37:00 sir, you didn't mention A4 and IA3? I play NTSC version for retroachievements, that one is crazy hell. I was about to get hospitalized for mental ilness 😵💫
I always use the red Evo 2 because it's a great car for grinding. The Evo Event race gives you 10k for winning and you don't even need a license, grind through the Sunday Cup and Clubman Cup to get a racing chip, racing muffler, racing flywheel and stage 1 weight reduction, that's all you need for a comfortable win at the Evo race. Work your way up to get a used '97 mk4 Supra Turbo, (Almost 20k less than new.) Grind some more to give it a Stage 4 turbo and adjustable gear ratios. Get the IA license and participate the Turbo race where you can earn 50k for each race and get the price R33 Drag car through the Test Course race (quick and easy race) sell it for 250K. Rinse and repeat.
Same with your guide for Gran Turismo 4. I'm enjoying myself playing GT2 thanks to you. Are you planning on doing a guide for Gran Turismo 5 or you just wanted to cover the more "older ones"?
Glad to hear! I haven't really decided yet when I'll make the GT5 guide; I still have some video ideas for the older GT games, and I've been meaning to try out the TXR series as well and potentially make a guide for them. When the burst of motivation eventually comes along, I'll give it my best shot.
My father father buy me GT2 on our old PS1, i started to play GT with GT5, since i have played to GT6, GT Sport and now GT7. It feel amazing to play the second opus of my favorite game saga. Thanks for this video🫶
Good video man, got me into properly giving this game a shot and it's been real fun so far. Though I can't seem but notice that I'm getting far more undertseer than what is probably normal and I have no idea where it's coming from. Race cars especially refuse to turn and it got really annoying trying to gold the S licences due to this. Comparing my gameplay to some WR licences on RUclips, it feels like their on super softs while I'm not comforts, I genuinely don't understand how they have so much more grip. I'm playing the 1.2 version of the US release on Duckstation with the 60 FPS patch and a few other of Silent's cheats' using a series Xbox controller set up as a NeGcon for analog controls and the only thing I've changed ingame was decrease the deadzone values to their minimum and increase steering sensitivity. Idk if you've had this problem yourself or know how to fix it, but maybe some tuning could make it less severe if there really is no way to get around it. On another note, have you heard of "ground effects" in this game or something similar to that end? This video was uploaded a month back (ruclips.net/video/WwxLvXDDojs/видео.html), the amount of grip this Dodge makes is obscene. And judging from OP's comments there's more cars that exploit whatever trick the Dodge is. I tried looking it up myself and found nothing, so I'm really interested if you could share your thoughts on this. Cheers bro, good vid and can't wait for the GT4 guide (if it's still being worked on that is lol). Edit: Turns out I'm a fucking idiot. By setting the Max in analogue settings to the highest value, you're telling the game that you need a lot of input before you get any steering at all. I've set it back to something like 40 and it was an instant improvement, cars actually turn in now. Still found nothing on ground effects though.
Thank you! Glad you figured out what was going on with your controls. I watched that 'ground effect' video, this is my first time hearing about it as well. From testing, seems to be a quirk where the car stays glued to the ground after a sudden change in elevation, allowing you take really sharp turns at high speed. I'm guessing it has something to do with setting the springs really soft; dampers don't seem to affect it. It seems to work best with PAL at 25FPS; 50FPS PAL can do it too but the car understeers more. It's a cool trick, but you have to be really precise with your turning or else the car will just understeer heavily. I asked the other GT PS1 gurus if they know anything else about it, will let you know if they do. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
@@TeaKanji Turns out ground effects are mentionned in Gasman's guide and he links to multiple threads where one guy in particular documented all his findings. Unfortunately he deleted all his posts over some spat with forum mods and there's no capture on internet archive dating to before he did that, so all his info is gone for good. You're right about springs though. From what I gathered, the gist of it is you take any race car, set your springs up super soft, minimum ride height, max downforce and adjust any issues from that base. Probably doesn't work with every race car but most should be effected, I've read about the Speed 12 exhibiting this effect as well. Wacky stuff tbh. Edit: Forgot to mention but ground effects seem to be highly track dependant and only go into effect above a certain speed which may also be car dependant, so at least it's semi based on how it works irl. Red Rock is where everything goes crazy and I've read about Gridenwald and Laguna Seca favouring ground effects too.
@@kodakreeeam9971 oh, yeah, you're right. I even remember reading that section and clicking on the linked threads, but got distracted by the guy leaving the forums over some cussing. A shame it wasn't properly archived. But yeah, all of that seems to be the case. The guys on the GT modding Discord server mentioned that it's a speedrun strat as well. There haven't been many serious speedrun attempts over the last few years though, probably because the barrier of entry is so high (all golds on B through IA to sell the prize cars and buy the GT-One road car). If I ever make a follow-up to this guide, I'll be sure to mention it. Thanks!
Hi. I'm trying to find the Supra shown at 5:09 on my NTSC copy but I can't. The only ones available are in Red Mica and Super White III colors. The info dump says the White Pearl Mica is available on PAL. Am I missing something?
Can you help me out with some settings for the Elise GT1 and the S2000 GT1? For the Elise GT1, I specifically wanted settings to work flawlessly at Red Rock Raceway. It is virtually impossible to use the car there with the default settings. After some research and tweaking the suspension myself, I'm right now with those settings: SR 3.2/8.2, RH 90/115, DB 1/10, DR 1/10, C 1.0/1.0, T 0.00/0.00, and max downforce. It is surprisingly doing very well with those settings, averaging 1:04~1:05, but I feel it has potential to do even better, considering the gears and LSD settings are left unchanged so far. For the S2000, I simply couldn't make it work. I saw some people saying this is one of the best sub 591hp cars in the game, which is weird to me as it just spins out too easily, no matter what. It is specially noticeable at Midfield Raceway. And it seems like it is really hard to find the right settings because when it is suffering from understeer and I change the settings, it now start suffering from oversteer.
Sure thing, will give this a go later on. What frame rate are you playing on? From glancing over the settings for the Elise GT1, the rear dampers might be a bit too stiff for Red Rock Valley. If you go into bumper cam, you'll see the car bobbing up and down around turn 1. You might see better handling if you reduce it to 2 or 1. This was something I wasn't aware of when I was making this guide, I'll go into more detail when I make a proper tuning guide. Tweaking the gears and reducing LSD Accel should make a big difference too.
Alright, for the Elise at Red Rock, give these settings a go, with super softs on front and rear: springs: 3.0 / 5.0 ride height: 55 / 115 dampers (B + R): 1 / 1 camber: 5.5 / 0.8 toe: -0.20 / 0.20 gears: final gear to 5.500, then auto setup to 1, then final gear to 2.500, then set individual gears to 3.378, 2.502, 2.090, 1.755, 1.477, 1.264 downforce: 0.78 / 0.99 LSD (I, A, D): 8, 16, 1 You'll notice pretty much straight away that the car gets sucked into corners at 150mph, making much sharper turns than it's supposed to. That's the soft springs and high downforce at work; basically the same idea as the R30 Silhouette at Trial Mountain video I uploaded earlier today. I managed to set a 1:01 with this setup, and can get 1:02 - 1:03's pretty consistently. The key thing is to avoid skids: brake in a straight line, let the car fall into the corner gently while letting go of the throttle, then floor it out in a straight line. This is especially important for that banked S turn in the final section, just let go of the accelerator before exiting the tunnel and make gentle turns through it. It'll take some practice to avoid spinning out, but the payoff is huge. Always launch in 2nd gear for a smooth launch, you'll never need 1st gear.
Then, for the S2000 GT1, try this out, also with super softs on front and rear: springs: 3.0 / 4.5 ride height: 67 / 130 dampers (B + R): 1 / 1 camber: 3.8 / 1.2 toe: -0.20 / 0.20 stabilisers: 2 / 6 gears: final gear to 5.500, then auto setup to 1, then final gear to 2.500, then set individual gears to 3.383, 2.600, 2.135, 1.770, 1.480, 1.266 downforce: 0.78 / 0.99 LSD (I, A, D): 4, 14, 4 This should make the car a bit less likely to spin out, while also ensuring it's still easy to turn. The thing to remember about the S2000 GT1 is that its braking distances aren't the best. Try to brake a bit earlier than normal when entering corners so you always have time to prepare. That bumpy left turn after the tunnel in Midfield is quite tricky regardless of how you set the car up. Best to keep away from the curb and stay in the middle lane so the car doesn't lose control. Should be able to get 1:01's consistently with some practice. Like with the Elise GT1, don't use 1st gear, as the car will just lose traction while exiting corners. 2nd gear will give a smooth launch.
@@TeaKanji I think our play styles may be very different. I was able to get better times with your gear and LSD settings, but with MY suspension settings. I tried your settings for suspension but it just doesn't work for me, even when I try to play cautious. The S2000 on the other hand is much more stable now. It actually feels like a good car now, but still not one of my favorites. Thank you very much for your help!
I was 5 playing this game, and I remember looking at all of the upgrades in confusion. It didn't help that I only knew a few words of English at the time. 😂 Now I just wish I could magically make my PS1 work again.
Happy to help! That's one of Silent's cheat codes; when enabled, you can hold down L3 to disable all HUD elements, both in-race and in replays. The code should be automatically included with DuckStation, but the link to Silent's blog is in the description if you need it.
I love the guide! I’m only half way through so not sure if you covered it or not in the video but what controls do you use and what is your layout for it ?
Thank you! I use a DualShock 4 with analog sensitivity set to 110% in the DuckStation controller settings. I actually use the face buttons for acceleration/brake, which is sub-optimal, but I'm a TrackMania player so it's just what's comfortable for me.
Thx coming off of gran turismo one which I played for years and coming into gran turismo 2 but it's been awhile since I turned a car in the game and with more options in 2 I wanted to watch a video for it
Sure, this is for the '98 GT-S, racing modded, 295hp with racing muffler and computer, and all other upgrades excl. ASM and TCS. Bear in mind I tuned this in DuckStation with the 50FPS mod that fixes most physics issues, so if you're playing on an OG console, you might need to adjust the springs and LSD: springs: 6.0 / 10.0 ride height: 85 / 130 dampers (B + R): 2 / 8 camber: 2.2 / 1.5 toe: -0.20 / 0.20 stabilisers: 6 / 6 brakes: 24 / 18 gears: final gear to 3.600, then auto to 1, then final gear to 2.500, then individual gears to 3.207, 2.525, 1.975, 1.560, 1.215 downforce: 0.47 / 0.76 LSD (I, A, D): 12, 1, 30 I love the '98 GT-S RM in this game, but it feels very underpowered, especially compared to the likes of the NSX and the RX-7's. This should still sweep most events with a 591hp limit though, excluding maybe GT 300. Its power is all at high-RPM's, so you need to gear up as late as possible. The '96 GT-S has more power at mid-RPM's if I remember right.
@@TeaKanji Nice! Yes I’m playing it on the PS1. Keeping it original and old school! I have the car modified up to the max. with around 500 hp. Do the mods you listed still apply?
Ah, nice one. I tested it on PAL 25FPS there with a fully-powered 506hp '98 GT-S and the suspension settings are fine, but I suggest setting the LSD to 20 / 1 / 40 so the car doesn't lose balance. You'll need to make the gearbox longer though. Set the final gear to 4.300, then set Auto to 1, then set final to 2.500, then set the gears to 2.726, 2.145, 1.665, 1.325, 1.030. That should give you enough top speed for most tracks.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad that there's still plenty of interest in GT2 content like this. I've made a text document that covers all of the tuning tricks shown in this video, and more. Check it out here: docs.google.com/document/d/1kt8BvShge9ZTH7hnUTsI46WRcf7XPfvEsMPjc4twAm4/edit?usp=sharing
Some extra notes and tips that didn't make it into the video:
- On original hardware, PAL has some bugs that causes some cars to stutter while accelerating.
(see KingLich's reply below for analog acceleration/brake controls in DuckStation)
- DuckStation's analog sensitivity settings are very high by default.
Users of DuckStation
If you want to be able to use the trigger pedals on your controllers, choose NeGcon as your controller on emulator's settings.
Can you make a tutorial to how to use the turbo button trick?

Hallo mr.Kanji,
Could you make aVideo, or a doc file, to explain how to setup a duckstation with a steering wheel and pedals?

The fact somebody made an hour-long guide about a >20 year old game warms my heart; I used to love GT2 so much
do you still love it?
Weeks of my life were spent on GT2. I Iove it.
@@TeaKanji reddit is a place full of fools, emboldened by the ratings system into thinking they know way more than they really do.
Such haters on reddit
I love when you sift through 6 tons of RUclips pay-dirt and come across a gold nugget video like this.
Expertly done sir, congrats!
That's a big compliment, thank you!
I literally just typed "Gran Turismo 2" idk bro
Love how we’re still getting GT2 YT vids in 2022. Timeless fun on GT2. Great vid!
Thank you!
@@TeaKanji For a long time I didn't know that you shouldn't have been allowed to bring just whatever car into whichever tournament more or less, but it's been fun learning more about how much of a beautiful mess this game is lol
On a personal level, my last run or so have always involved bringing a car that was always the correct type that the racing tells you to do.

Thank you, happy to help!
Thank you for the kind words! I still have plenty of work left to do with the PS1 and PS2 games, so expect a few more videos at least.
One of the cool side of NTSC version: Ford Taurus Sho 98's racing modification is Mark Martin's 98 nascar livery
i think that livery is only available on the 1.0 release of the game.

You've done amazing work here. Not just the video, but also the accompanying document. Thanks.
I learned things that will be helpful in many games. Especially the gear ratio and power band stuff.
I haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of this video yet, but I got gt2 for my ps3. And this guide will help greatly! Thanks for making it.❤
I’m 25, played and loved every GT from GT3 to 7, believe me or not, never played GT2, I just finished my Sunday cup with my used GTS R32, so basically my first experience and I’m starting to love it, wish me luck, thanks for this guide!
This guide is truly such a gem! You've helped me tremendously fr! Thank you for putting in so much effort into making this for us Drivers out here. Now I have a lil bit more confidence in tuning some of the more beefy cars. You deserve this cookie~ 🍪
Thank you! 🍪
Frfr 😭
@@TeaKanji The passion shows, well done! Hyped for the Speed 12 video!!
I just had to comment on this masterpiece of content and straightforward tips and lessons for a game that gave me a great childhood and still love playing to this day. Thank you!
Happy to help, thank you!
Thanks to your guide I'm greatly enjoying the GT2 A Spec Mod! It brought a lot of attention back to GT2.
Just started playing the game on an emulator for the first time in my life I’m hooked you guys had it pretty good
replaying these in 2024 this guide very helpful thx :)
very helpful video, i recently started playing gt2 and got around 20 hours on it.
I used the Denso Supra i earned to get some money at the All Night endurance race and bought a viper gts that i ended up tuning and giving the racing modification which i couldn't for the life of me drive because of the tuning i didn't understand.
Im GT2 veteran, but watched it all anyway. Great job!
wow nice tutorial as a kid i don`t understand how to tune cars correctly but now it makes totally sense i`ll try it and the cars drive much better thanks man
i learned a lot, well made. thank you so much.
currently playing this game on my miyoo mini plus- having so much fun! now because of this guide i will enjoy the game more, finally have an idea to discover the full potential of the car because of tuning. tyty!!!!
(And more like the Miata beating 1100hp drag cars)
Ahh thank you so much!!!
And absolutely you should haha, I just bought a baritone guitar to play some of them 😅
Watching these videos is a pleasure
Racing Lagoon community needs u. Got a fan translation last year, basically if Squaresoft made Gran Turismo, but RPG.
No tune guide out there but certain it takes a lot from this game
It's so cool that the classic Gran Turismo games are getting lots of extra content through mods and challenge runs. The second game was my favourite, as the car list greatly expanded on the original game, but most events didn't feature the entry restrictions that would come about in GT3 and GT4. And because of that, it gives you practically unlimited freedom when choosing which cars to race.
this is a great video man, brings me back to being a kid
great video dude. Wish i was there when the forum existed, tho i was 4 at the time and started playing GT2 at 6 years old XD
im subbing and looking foward to more content from you. and i hope one day maybe GT2 gets a revival with a crazy mod or smth
This guide its literaly a masterpiece
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! There's a lot of things I think I'd change if I were to re-make the guide again, but maybe I'm just being too hard on myself.
7:52 I never knew that for the longest time. I did the Trial Mountain 30 Laps race in an Impreza with hard tires. It turned like a bus!
Great video. I managed to get a few Honda Integras in the NTSC version using a game shark over a decade ago on PS1.
Underappreciated video! It's perfectly executed. Love it!
Great job my friend.
Thank you!
that intro man
you nailed it
I was 9 at the time when the game launched, I didn't have a PC (let alone an internet connection) therefore I learnt so much about cars from GT2 alone, however it took lots of trials and errors.
28:50 My starter car of GT2 ❤ I love that engine sound with the racing exhaust
Amazing video. Alfa's can be a very decent pick for the FFs, especially Alfa 156.
Thank you! Yeah, the Alfa's are surprisingly good FF's; I think the 156 16v was slightly better than the 24v? I remember one being a bit faster than the other for 295hp.
What a wonderfully produced video
Idk why, but this video was very relaxing and captivating
Also, top tier guide, great job!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
My heart 😭❤️ nice guide dude
You are a true passionate. Its a pleasure meeting you. I'm subbing :)
Ah, thank you, hope you enjoy the rest of the guides!
Going to check them out :D
My man, thanks to your videos my revisiting of the emulated PSX games of Gran Turismo has been pretty awesome. I have almost the 60% of GT2 before seeing your guide and I am thinking of starting all over again hahaha.
I loved your GT1 guide and your GT2 guide let me know how detailed were the upgrades between games.
I can't find the "Thanks" button anywhere, pls let me buy you a beer 🍻 or a coffee ☕
Glad to hear, thank you! The temptation of starting yet another GT2 playthrough looms over us all.
I don't know if this little trick is known : in automatic transmission, we can force downgrade by pressing on the Triangle button.
Thank you! You put so much work into this!
gt2 plus mod also adds a whole bunch of things, like the Honda cars on NTSC, tons of race mods, etc...
Yeah, that's true. I was thinking of mentioning the mods at the start of the video, but I decided to keep it simple and only mention the original versions. I'll put a link in the description for it though, since having the Acura racing mods on NTSC along with the other stuff is quite nice. Thanks!
@@TeaKanji Thank you for the video. It was quite well done and informative.
No worries, glad you found it useful!
I can only stand up and applaud, that video is awesome. Now, when will we see similar videos for GT3 and GT4...wait, there are? Well, excuse, I'm off binge watching.
Thank you! Enjoy the rest of the guides. The GT4 and GT1 ones in particular are a big step up in quality compared to this one, I feel.
WHAT A LEGEND THIS TEAKANJI GUY IS!
wonderful video mate, I always wondered about the gears.
Thanks for making this video 👌 I do appreciate it it.
As some who was born after this game, I’m just happy you made a Gide for this game so I don’t have to deal with modern aaa games
Thanks for the heart, I’m tired of modern aaa publishers trying to release buggy games with live service and pay 2 win micro transactions so that’s why I now play older games, it isn’t for nostalgia after all I’m only in my teens, it because developers at least gave you a finished game packed with content.😢
Appreciate it my man I’m just starting this game
An excellent video my dude, kudos to you!
Thank you!
the dodge concept car looks like someone crashed it into a wall, lol. it was also the gold prize car for b in gt1
Super useful and great tips. Esp LSD tuning; the Lancer Evo as an ideal 4WD; having RR in automatics and wheel spin in first gear, and the set up at the end of the video;
Oh and the weight reductions.
Thanks a lot!
Thank you! Glad you found it useful.

sir, you didn't mention A4 and IA3?
I play NTSC version for retroachievements, that one is crazy hell.
I was about to get hospitalized for mental ilness 😵💫
Thank you I just start this game yesterday ❤
ohh the nostalgia. one of my favorites as a kid
Thank you, this is invaluable!
What a gem of a video.
Thank you!
Playing Gran Turismo 2 on a bright sunny day in 2001 . Come on now
Amazing treatment to an awesome Game. You got one new subscriber
Thank you, and thanks for subscribing!
Amazing video, this game deserves it
My father father buy me GT2 on our old PS1, i started to play GT with GT5, since i have played to GT6, GT Sport and now GT7. It feel amazing to play the second opus of my favorite game saga. Thanks for this video🫶
Thank you sir! Awesome video! 🔥
Exactly what i need, since im starting the game again recently
Nice one, enjoy!
awesome content bro, thank you!!!
Thanks!
I actually cant find the mazda rx 7 turbo on day 30 in my used shop (im using the us version)
Sorry about that, I forgot that the used car lots differ between regions when writing that bit. It appears on days 50-59 in red on NTSC-U.
@@TeaKanji I found her! Thank you so much for the fast reply. I gave up on getting a gold A license for now 😂
Hi. I'm trying to find the Supra shown at 5:09 on my NTSC copy but I can't. The only ones available are in Red Mica and Super White III colors. The info dump says the White Pearl Mica is available on PAL. Am I missing something?
Ah, sorry, I recorded that clip on PAL because it was easiest at the time. It doesn't appear in White Pearl Mica until day 20-29.
41:40 Oh, yeah. That thing lol
Love this!
Who ever made this. Thank you!
Respect bro thank you ❤️ your video is very professional
What a great video
Thank you!
Racing modifications were better than slapping an ugly wing in GT4. gave more character to each car.
@@TeaKanji I'm playing the NTSC-U version without any mods, so I guess 30fps? I'm not sure.
Alright, for the Elise at Red Rock, give these settings a go, with super softs on front and rear:
springs: 3.0 / 5.0
ride height: 55 / 115
dampers (B + R): 1 / 1
camber: 5.5 / 0.8
toe: -0.20 / 0.20
gears: final gear to 5.500, then auto setup to 1, then final gear to 2.500, then set individual gears to 3.378, 2.502, 2.090, 1.755, 1.477, 1.264
downforce: 0.78 / 0.99
LSD (I, A, D): 8, 16, 1
You'll notice pretty much straight away that the car gets sucked into corners at 150mph, making much sharper turns than it's supposed to.
Then, for the S2000 GT1, try this out, also with super softs on front and rear:
springs: 3.0 / 4.5
ride height: 67 / 130
dampers (B + R): 1 / 1
camber: 3.8 / 1.2
toe: -0.20 / 0.20
stabilisers: 2 / 6
gears: final gear to 5.500, then auto setup to 1, then final gear to 2.500, then set individual gears to 3.383, 2.600, 2.135, 1.770, 1.480, 1.266
downforce: 0.78 / 0.99
LSD (I, A, D): 4, 14, 4
This should make the car a bit less likely to spin out, while also ensuring it's still easy to turn.
😂 Now I just wish I could magically make my PS1 work again.
thx for this video! how did you managed to remove the informations on the replays on the backgroun? (i mena, the race position, speed, etc...)
Thx coming off of gran turismo one which I played for years and coming into gran turismo 2 but it's been awhile since I turned a car in the game and with more options in 2 I wanted to watch a video for it
GT2 was the most fun I had in gaming.
Wow!
Really good video! 👏
Thank you!
@@TeaKanji You’re welcome!
Do you have a proper tune for the ‘96 & ‘98 MR2, especially the ‘98 GT-S as the “racing modification” version.?
Sure, this is for the '98 GT-S, racing modded, 295hp with racing muffler and computer, and all other upgrades excl. ASM and TCS. Bear in mind I tuned this in DuckStation with the 50FPS mod that fixes most physics issues, so if you're playing on an OG console, you might need to adjust the springs and LSD:
springs: 6.0 / 10.0
ride height: 85 / 130
dampers (B + R): 2 / 8
camber: 2.2 / 1.5
toe: -0.20 / 0.20

I love the '98 GT-S RM in this game, but it feels very underpowered, especially compared to the likes of the NSX and the RX-7's.
That should give you enough top speed for most tracks.
any chance you could post another link to the racing modification chart? i'm trying to access it but it keeps saying its no longer available
This should've been on VHS tape bundled with GT2.
I think that would've made things too easy, half the fun of the game is learning how to play the game by yourself
