Another element of the story that I think was absolutely critical that you didn't touch on, was that it genuinely understood the *real* nightmare of Body Horror. A lot of people hear "body horror" and naturally think of gruesome blood and guts and all that, which is pretty revolting, but """good""" well executed Body horror relies on something else that Love Town handled horrifically well. The unstoppable loss of the self.
Tommy and Merry's transformation into Tomerry was horrific in a number of ways, but what stuck with me the most was the last few lines from Angela before the battle begun, as well as Tomerry's last line of dialog in-game. Angela asks it if it remembered anyone named Tommy or Merry, and Tomerry replies that it doesn't. Then later, when you finally kill it, one of Tomerry's two death dialogs has it saying that it's scared and lonely, crying out for Tommy to come back.
Looking at Tomerry in the present, even if it may literally be made from the combination of Tommy and Merry, "Tomerry" isn't either of them. Merry was still there somewhere deep inside it's mind, unable to do anything but watch as her new body and mind changed and warped into something that is no longer her. And while she agreed to go through with it because Tommy was by her side, at some point he "died", and his consciousness was dissolved into Tomerry leaving Merry completely alone, trapped in a body she was losing control over piece by piece until it was only what fragments of her remained inside of Tomerry. Everything she was, everything Tommy was, now gone forever and replaced by a hollow facsimile that only resembled their faces superficially.
I've seen that idea expressed very often in the form of terminal cancer. Like how terminal cancer causes your body to slowly waste away, growing weaker and weaker all the while you can do nothing to stop or change it. Body horror isn't just about the blood and guts, but the realization that you are forcibly being changed into something that is no longer "You", yet it is entirely outside your control leaving you with no options whatsoever except sitting and waiting for either death, or the day you are finally no longer even aware of what you used to be.
Plus, the way that it goes from Love Town's story, focused very specifically on the passengers and the personalized horror on an individual level, to the Puppets who literally can't even speak, leaving *all* the dialog to Jae-hoon, was a revolting excellent choice. It showed you how horrifying and nightmarish just a single Warp train was, and then rather than over-indulging in it, it immediately zooms out to show you through his monologue that this isn't unique. EVERY Warp train is like this, meaning there's a dozen or more Love Town-like situations happening out there every moment. There's such powerful body horror in Love Town itself, but the writers made sure to also reveal that the "real" horror isn't the events of Love Town itself, but that this is commonplace in the city.
The greatest horror of all of Love Town isn't Love Town, but what it reveals about the City as a whole. It's the first moment where you are completely and entirely unable to avoid confronting the reality that it isn't individual groups or single corporations that are twisted and corrupt, but the entire City itself.

    • @jakcesleepingrn5739
      @jakcesleepingrn5739 Год назад +180

Also the death dialogue reminds me of terminal lucidity term.
At the end of the road, people who suffer from dementia suddenly remember everything right before the end. They remember everyone and everything before going to the other side.
Merry remembered herself, remembered Tommy right before death, she saw how Tommy within the monstrosity died.

    • @3heads0thoughts
      @3heads0thoughts Год назад +95

To be fair, I don't know if it fully implies what you're saying, because the whole idea is that at the halfway point, you pop. Tommy. His head explodes. Then they do their enrage mechanic, and then Merry begs for Tommy to come back as she dies. I took that to mean that they had formed a cohesive self through Tomerry. So when Tommy died, Merry was unable to stay in that childlike personality coping mechanism after the shock of losing Tommy registered with her. Which is what caused her to rage. Either way it's awful but yeah

The Thing wasn't entirely about the 'loss of self', that individual is already dead, replaced with something that disguises itself as that entity. It can touch on the Universal Fear of the Unknown, I'm sure you know of things that *appear* to be Human, but aren't.

The main reason I believe this strategy could work is because Olga was still hung over after the 30 hours if a state like drunkenness is continued What about a state of sleep and so your main strategy would be purchasing something that allows you to automatically pass out with the brain entering a comatose state for a couple of seconds then all you have to do is time it right, so the scan set it up with your brain being in that state when the trip ends that way you can sleep through the whole thing without having to pay extra

Love Town however... Is specially terrifying because it has something every person could harbor: Malice
Miss Nurse and Mr. Doctor just needed a little push here, a nudge there, and whisper some sweet nothings onto the passengers to finally make the world crumble to pieces
and now that I think of it... Isn't Love Town a dark mirror of the City in it's current state? some really... really compressed and condensed glimmer of the madness that's slowly unfolding because our Holy Mother decided to use the light to strenghten everyone, no matter the consecuences?

The title is self-explanatory, but to some this one will probably be even more horryfying - because in the five-hundred million years button the main character is stuck in a complete void alone. Theres nothing to do there, other than try to entertain yourself and pass time somehow. And by the end of it, by the end of all the suffering and all the enlightenment, his memory judt gets wiped, and it seems like he just got a mil yen without doing anything. And so he presses the button again. And again. And again. The terror of that concept lives rent free in the back of my head, and I kinda wish that story was more recognized by the horror community.

Ironically, W Corp has mentioned that, while exceedingly rare, there have been cases where the passengers were still all in their seats and the cases of the Color fixer enlightening the passengers which led them to revolt, putting up such a fight that the Rabbits were called. Meaning, despite the horrendously long passage of time, it had been possible for them to maintain their sanity and, perhaps, find some way to combat the boredom outside of mutilation.
    Meaning one logical conclusion:
W Corp just needs good Wi-Fi to keep things smooth!

The reset button is the Actual W singularity, while the warp is the old W Corp singularity that they never found how to use to make money. Current W Corp brought the license of the singularity from the head, made the deal with T Corp and used its own singularity to complete the whole process.
One of the reasons The whole Warp Train arc was so impactful for many players in the Early Acess, is we keep coming up with theories every week about who was responsible for the malfunction, was it the Blue gang? was it another Corp? Was the library itself to force its passengers to get the invitation? with some that got the idea before that this was not a malfunction, but didn't understand why it could be done this way. First class gets cryosleep. As for why they don't make it universal, there's three possible theories:
      1) Convenience (perceived): Just sitting in your seat and waiting 10 seconds is "normal", it's what people are used to. Having to climb into stasis capsule every time would raise some eyebrows and questions.
      2) They have to "shear" time: Even if stasis capsules are net zero in terms of time spent/time gained, they still have to power their other projects. So several hundred people are exploited per ten or twenty who benefit from W products

There is nothing indicating that the train stopped after Tomerry and the rest of Lovetown went to the Library, so the ~2000 years spent is possibly only be a fraction of what the normal timespan spent on a warp train is.

Thing is, those doctors were with the Blue Reverberation Ensemble, meaning that they knew exactly what they were doing and (if i remember correctly) did it to test the Library. They sent Tomerry and six other sentient flesh blobs into the Library via an invitation, and then Jae-Heon also took the first class passengers out of stasis and turned them into literal human puppets. And even worse, Jae-Heon wasn't even a real person! He was just a disguise by the Puppeteer, who is, of course, a member of the Blue Reverberation Ensemble. They were, in essence lying from the very beginning as to who they were, with the intention of doing this the entire time.

I have a list of potential answers to this situation:
1 : lobotomy (not the corp , but like the actual procedure) to make the crazy people dosiel
2 : Getting rid of the part of the brain responsible for processing pain
3 : Using exes as an answer for the boredom , like s3x or organized fights ( this is my least favorite answer)
4 : Reaching Nirvana and abandoning earthly desires ( least likely to happen)
5 : rading first class and taking turns on the stases chambers (could lead to fights or betrayal)
6 : Going dead behind the eyes ( witch is to say that we give up on existing and stop moving , becoming something like plants ) witch probably won't work for everyone.

Project moon has this magical ability to make a situation deepen where any other writing team would’ve hit the floor of a bad situation. The thing that makes W corps hit the hardest is when you’re going through the motions. You see the dread of people wondering how long it’s going to take. You see how much pain people inflict on themselves, unable to die, and then others. Then you see the horror of how twisted the survivors become, having their love used to feed on eachother. You see the height of the insanity of a cultish love town. And then. You reach the end. By this point you had assumed this was simply a disaster, but it’s working as intended. This happens every single day. The staff here make jokes about grabbing beef stew while on the job. Telling stories about other trains and how those trains were different. This happens. EVERY DAY. And it’s such a massive finale for this story. And it’s just a small, wildly minuscule part of the city in a larger sense, which operates much the same, if not worse. Absolutely beautiful writing from Project Moon

I refused to read through it because I knew what was coming and I knew that I genuinely wouldn't like it. The existential dread, the happy couple never getting to return to their normal lives, all of it hurt and I gave Tomerry the swiftest booking I could give them.
Then I read Leviathan and realised that anyone that became part of Tomerry is essentially dead for good. Anyone on that train that were turned into parts of flesh globs or Tomerry are dead. Sure, there might be one survivor in the entirety of Love Town that made it out but I doubt it. Everyone on that specific train is likely dead, for real.

But this made me realize why the show The Amazing Digital Circus filled me with existential dread. Humans trapped in the Digital Circus also don't need to eat or sleep, but most of them go insane due to the boredom. To the point where the AI in charge of the Circus has to make up "adventures" to make sure the still sane humans don't lose their minds from boredom. Love Town is probably one of the only thing that actually made me feel sick and unwell, and that's saying something. The song "From a Place of Love" still hunts me from the memory of having a sweet, innocent sounding song, playing over the image of mutated and mangled, living corpses.
As for your point, I kind of agree, but I think there's something missing. Yes, the passengers did start to go mad because they were bored, but I think they also went mad because of isolation. I mean, while it's nowhere near the scale of the WARP Trains, we DID have to stay inside most of the time for nearly two years due to an important reason. And while we were able to leave our houses for getting stuff like groceries, it was still very painful experience to have, with some people (such as me) feeling like ten years have passed due to how long they spend in confinement. If the WARP crew had a way to temporarily leave the train, even if for a few minutes, I bet it would have taken much longer to for the first person to go mad than just two weeks.
Lastly, I think one of the things that shocked me the most was when the Tommy part of Tomerry died, essencially causing them to have an existancial crisis and go berserk because of it. I mean, imagine it, the way you have lived and thought felt like it was that way since forever, and it has been pretty much part of your life. Then, while fighting, something feels...wrong. Part of your thoughts and maybe even "self" is suddenly gone, or a link with it has been severed, potentially making you realised that, maybe the way you have been as not always been this way. It's another extra thing that made me so horrified of Love Town, while also making it one of the most memorable parts of the game.

And especially in the first years, when conflict was more active and the system was raw, queue of various cars could've been so big, and speed of checking was so awful, that you quite often found yourself in an 4-6-hour waiting period. Sometimes it was shorter, sometimes longer. But it always was horrible for me, as a young child with an itchy feet. You must sit in the small car, with almost nothing to do, and try to somehow bear this boredom, just to take off and go to another checkpoint and repeat the same cycle. Once we were forced to even sleep in the queue, and arrived home almost 12 hours after departure. You can go and look, how far Donetsk and Mariupol is - it's just two hours by car under normal circumstances!
When I've played LoR, I was genuinely shocked because of the Love Town. I desperately wanted to hear, that it was just an emergency situation, because I knew, how horrible it could be - being able to do almost nothing even half a day, and I can't describe my overwhelming terror when I think about the possibility to not also bear an entire millennia of it, but also bear it not once, but twice, trice, countless fucking times, because using WARP-trains for everyone in the City is as normal as a usual trains for us, and I don't give a fuck about my memories of such horror being wiped out by that fucked up W-Corp!

Some people believe that anesthia just paralyzes you and your memory is wiped afterwards, but you feel, see, and hear everything during the operation/procedure.
I think thats part of the horror of this story. This idea that you wouldnt even know you went through it at all even though it was hell.

    • @Norinia
      @Norinia 11 месяцев назад +5

You can rest easy and know that’s not how anesthesia works. Besides the fact anesthesia is a broad term for medically muting how one would feel pain through the entire process (meaning if a numbing shot was given to you for a procedure that they give you awake, that’s called anesthesia as well.)
What you’re talking about sends the person into a forced sleep. If they were simply ‘paralyzed and would forget later’, doctors would be alerted to the fact of rapid eye movement or a rapidly increasing heartbeat.
There have been people who doctors (lazily, these are all massive malpractice incidents of the doctors being lazy) forgot to anesthetize who have experienced the full hell of surgery. It’s documented every single time that there were signs associated with being fully awake, not under anesthesia.
So breathe, calm down, our world’s not smart enough to be like these horror worlds. Anesthesia works just fine and doesn’t induce any eldritch horror event onto a person.

as long as you aren't trapped in some void dimension or something then being immortal is pretty great.
you'll have all the time in the world to do everything you'd ever want.
and since we have no idea if there is even an afterlife then i'd rather just stay alive than dead.

@@heartbae87 True we don't know what is after death, so maybe it's not worse.
But maybe after death is better than life who knows ?
Just remember than we live in a finite universe so if you achieve true immortality, you'll end up in nothingness or you just disappear with everything else.
Before all of that the earth will explode or implode so have fun keeping everything you liked with you. Maybe there will be some plan of sort to do a space Station or IDK, but it will degrade even faster than earth.
You can try to travel in other planets, just being rocks or gas in don't think you can do something very interesting on in...
The point i want to arrive to is, that most of the time it will be you and the nothingness of space.
I hope you are ready for that.
Of course you'll probably enjoy your life on earth, but it will be so short considering the time you'll pass with just yourself.
I probably think we became insane and probably envy death even it is unknown what is behind it.
Again i'm not against living longer, on the contrary i'm happy that humanity made progress so that we can live longer in a sane state.
I'm just against true immortality i don't think it will be better that we have now.
BTW when i said true immortality i'm refering to the immortality where you can't die against anything.
Maybe an immortality that i can sort of root for is the clinical ones.
The ones where don't die due to aging or illness, probably something that slow or stop the processus of aging, you still die to other causes.
Of course all of this is my opinion.

Love Town is just like League of Legends... you're stuck in a mysterious, scary place for God knows how long, and all it takes is one crazy person to drive everyone to madness...
And you're stuck with them until it ends...

Somehow them spending 2000 years and just forgetting about it just drops the creep factor for me.
It'd be easy to make this more horrifying.
The train did arrive at the destination 10 seconds later with everyone intact, except those are just copies, the originals get stuck in an eternal limbo where millions of years pass with no end in sight, and this happens each time they travel. just more and more copies to left in infinite agony.

The worst part, is that the 2000 year mark wasn't the stopping point. That's just the part we leave off on in the game's story. There is nothing indicating that the train stopped, so the 2000 years spent is possibly only be a fraction of what the normal timespan spent on a warp train is.

there is two occurrence of peoples don't turning into gigantic mess inside the train. first in Library of ruina, where they all turned into an hypnotic suggestion for eternity by clapping hands... and the second by having a color (wonder wich one) entering incognito inside the train and turning each passenger into super powerful overtrained for thousands or years soldiers. but probably any kind of super charismatic leader can do a good job of keeping peoples mentaly sane... probably.
