That’s a great deal. I bought one for half the price you paid for three. Quick note, the rougher non running one definitely has more than 65k. You can tell the odometer is broken, because the trip is set at zero. They can be fixed with a new gear for less than 30 bucks.
As for the odometer, Volvo actually did something very brilliant which no other manufactured to my knowledge has ever done and that is they put a special trip computer underneath the hood that works essentially like an OBD one system, and it keeps track of the actual mileage on the vehicle in the event, that the odometer ever stops counting. So you can get the mileage on those cars and correct it accordingly. A good friend of mine Robert Spinner, who is also known as Robert DIY on RUclips and of course David Bello who is a long time RUclipsr and Volvo enthusiast would know how to go about this procedure if you’re curious.
Awesome find!! I have an 87 240, got it for 700 bucks back in 2013. Also located in Vermont! The 87 most likely just has a bad fuel pump if it isnt starting intermittently. Remember only the main fuel pump being bad will make the car not start. The pre-pump being bad won't give you any symptoms.
Hard to find those Volvos for sale in NY/NJ area but if you do find them- they always sell for $ 4,500.00 minimum regardless of what dilapidated shape they are in...
My grandpa drove his 1965 volvo pv544 sport all the way to the southern most tip of Argentina to Maryland and back. Great cars. Probably the second most reliable car brand behind cord of course. Great purchase young man.
Hope you can come back with an update soon man. I miss your videos. I know you’ll be graduating college right about now so I get why you’ve been so busy.
Great find. I've owned a few of these Volvos over the years and really liked them. 244 was the model for the sedan for the earlier years & 245 was the wagon - in the early 80s they switched to just calling them all 240s but some fans stuck with it. You're right the 90s ones with the later injection setup are the ones to have ideally.
Damnnnn all the Volvos and they were looking mint too!!!! They go by the door numbers, so a 244 is the 4 door car and the 245 is the wagon. 242, 2 door. My 245 had the same window problem. Less of an issue now but happens once in a blue moon. Sanding the contacts behind the fuse box helps a lot/under the power window control, and if it still isn't working; a good slam or 2 on the door makes it work.
Volvos have their own amplifier that you need to remove before adding an aftermarket radio. Also want to watch out for the strange little seal on the top of the water pump. They tend to swell up in a leak. Keep an eye on the timing boats too. There’s a special tool you need to do a timing belt job on those engines.
Imagine driving down the expressway and seeing all those Swedish tanks being moved across the state. You'd think there was a war coming. Lol Awesome scores for sure!
Regarding the radio/stereo: There is a plastic frame to fit where original radio is mounted. This allows you to mount any standard aftermarket radio. There is also the possibility to mount a radio in the lower compartment (in front of the gear shifter) with a similar frame. But it's better to mount it in the upper pocket. There is also a special frame to mount several gauges (volt, oil pressure etc) in a row in the upper compartment. Ps: Many car enthusiasts here puts a Chevy small block in Volvo 240. Then you need a 1031 rear axle with a diff, a support between the front shock towers and one support going from each shock tower to the firewall to handle the torque. /A Swedish Volvo guy.
1st appears sold in 80’s the 2nd and 3 rd sold 90’s. Great cars, easy to repair. Most missed item is the oil breather filter. Needs changing, will cause oil leaks. The one you left the window own, drove it in Europe and was a very good model.
Dude, you scored. Even the beige one with over quarter of a million miles on it. They last forever. I have a 99 Volvo S70 with 74 thousand and change and it’s a fully loaded beast. You and your friend should hang on to them, drive them and you’ll get your money’s worth back a thousand times. Great deal and yes, you definitely jinxed yourself!!! 🤣👍🏻
My friends Dad had 3 one I remember. It had 2 carbs and run forever. At the drivein you could hid two in the trunk. They could crawl out from the back seat, and we would go canping and fishing in the 1962. It always ran.
Oh dear, I could not be trusted with a room of cheap 240s. Those 240s are great. The odometer is a well known point of failure, cheap small gears just go bad eventually. As for the automatic transmissions, they are pretty good, not too easy to service though as the dipstick tube is really, really difficult to remove. Also the kickdown cable, if it's bad will make the car very slow.
Good Volvos best to change the whole column for the ignition switch it is a bolt on job i did it years ago and was advised by a volvo specialist to change whole steering column
With the window which won't go up, try swapping a switch from another one of the windows. Gunked-up switches are the first item to check. Pull out the rectangular piece holding the window switches and door looks. The once which keeps stalling, try unplugging the AMM downstream of the air cleaner and mounted to the side of the shock tower. Make sure the ignition is fully off, and then disconnect the plug on it. Then see if it idles. When it is unplugged, it will go into a limp-home mode. It will run but not great. That is one of the quick tests to see if the AMM is functional.
Before you swap it you can just tap on it repeatedly and quickly and see if it cleans itself enough to work at least once. has worked for me on multiple occasions.
Hey fellow Vermonter! Was watching flying wheels in NH and it recommended your channel. I was no kidding im up in the NEK been considering getting into flipping cars its been a long time since ive been to the Williston auction. Like the videos you got a new subscriber.
2:49 thats an Austin A35 not a Healey although they are related and the drive train is very similar to an Austin-Healey Sprite (Frogeye) the Austin Healey name was never used on anything other than the 100, 100/6, 3000 and the Sprite Frogeye or bugeye as yanks like to call it. 😀
Nice score. I grew up driving and working on thees cars. They have crankshaft position sensors that like to fail and cause them to be very hard to start. They also have distributors that can get worn out. The stuck down window. I remember that with old Volvos you kind of learn to be very careful what windows you roll down because they might not go back up. Lol.

I think someone has already commented. Volvo numbers are 3-digit. First is the series number (2-series in this case). Second is the number of cylinders (most are 4-cylinder, but they did make some with 6 cylinders). Third digit is the number of doors (4 for a sedan, 5 for a station wagon, and 2 for some of their specials).
