- Hey write-righters keith wheeler here. In case you haven’t heard, many people now have access to KDP hardcover books. While kdp hardcovers are still in Beta, Amazon KDP recently opened hard cover beta to a lot more accounts. But just because we have the ability to create hard covers on KDP, the question is, are KDP hard cover books any good?
Well you’re in luck because today I’m going to do a KDP hard cover review. So let’s dive right in and check out the kdp hard cover quality.
Check out the hardcover or other version of Judy's book: amzn.to/3uGo5zR

That looks good! Nice cover, Judy.
Thanks Kevin!
Thanks for the show and tell, Keith! I haven't got my hands on the new hardcovers yet either, so it was great to get a good look at it here!
Yeah, I was really impressed with how it turned out. I’m planning on doing a Lulu vs KDP comparison.
From videos seen so far, I like the quality. Thanks for showing the hardcover. Am going to try it out!🤗
Happy to help! 👍
Thanks, mate. I've been wondering what these looked like, and what sort of quality they had, so I appreciated you putting in the effort to show everyone.
Happy to help!
He showed nothing.
Thanks for sharing this I've been curious about the hard cover. I have access to it on my kdp as well.
Sweet! I’m glad I was able to provide you some insight into the quality.
I received my hardcover author copy yesterday and I'm amazed with the quality. It's really nice.
Glad to hear you’ve experienced the same quality. That helps ensure it’s consistency.
Thanks for the great information, Keith! Enjoy your videos. :)
I’m glad you’re enjoying the content.
Thank you, great video. It really helped because we all wondered what it is going to look like.
Happy to help. I’m glad you found it helpful!
Looks good! Really pleased hard cover now available. I have just released my first e-book and always envisioned the paperback to be a hard cover book. Thank you!
That’s very exciting! 👍
The KDP hardcover looks terrific! I love it! Any information about when it'll be available for everyone because I'm interested. And... the 'fly leaf' is new to me, too. You're right, Keith, this field is captivating also because there is always something new that comes up and we shall learn about. Thank you for all your efforts!
I haven’t heard word yet on when it’ll be available to everyone. Thank you so much for your positive feedback.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Anyway, it's good to know in advance that such an option will be available. It helps a lot. Thank you!
You’re very welcome!
Thx for sharing. I’m curious about these. May get a few to test.
I’m pretty excited about it…and the printing cost isn’t that bad.
I've seen it in books but I didn't know it's called fly leaf. Got the hardcover beta and sold one copy so far. Thanks for showing us the hardcover quality. 🙏
You’re quite welcome. Glad I could provide you some trivia.
How do you people not know basic terms most people learn as kids????
Didn’t know that page was called a “flyleaf.” Always fun to learn new things!
Happy to help! 👍
Haven't tried it yet, but that looks like decent quality. Looking forward to the comparison video 😎
Yeah I’ll probably turn it into two different videos. A Lulu case wrap unboxing and review and then the comparison video.
I used my beta Hardcover on a book I did. I'm glad I saw this review, I was concerned with the quality . Thank you!
You’re very welcome. I’d love to hear your thoughts if/when you buy an authors copy.
I just got access, I did add the hardcover option to 3 of my low content books. I haven't ordered one for myself though, yet. :)
Hardcover versions can really help you stand out. Just double check that Amazon has them all linked in the same sales page.
I have the hard cover option. Do you think hardcover on MG books help sell the book as opposed to paperback covers? I've heard the term fly leaf, but didn't really know what it was. I like having the thicker paper for it. BTW... Judy's book is a great read for MG kids. The hard cover copy is handsome.
Hardcovers are a great addition. In my experience the MG books are the best selling hardcovers in children’s books.(beside board books)
Thanks for this video. Is this cover enough good for children books ?
The hardcover quality will definitely stand up to some beatings from little ones, although the interior is still paper, so they still need to learn how to properly care for a book.
Thank you for the informative video.
You’re quite welcome!
I'm pretty happy with the hard cover copies of my book. :)
Awesome!
Nope, didn't know about Flyleafs, but you're explanation makes sense. Didn't understand why a blank page (both sides) would be there, but now I do. Thanks. As a cartoonist, I'm toying with the idea of doing a collection of my designs with these, but I'm curious how the page quality would be for full color designs. If they're the same as the coloring books, which I currently have, I don't think they'd be the best for that. Thanks in advance.
Yeah the paper is the same. As a cartoonist, you may want to check out Lulu. Not only do they offer thicker page options(80#) but they actually have an option specifically for comic books.
@@KeithWheelerBooks thank you sir.... I'll do that. I appreciate the tip AND your videos. Currently working on a Rock and Roll themed puzzle book and that's how I stumbled on to your RUclips channel. Great content.
So glad you stumbled on over here!
Great tutorial as always!
Aw shucks…thanks! 😊
@@KeithWheelerBooks You're welcome!
👍
I got access to these back in May. I made myself a book. I didn't have any graphics on the front, just text. I chose the glossy finish and I like it.
Very exciting!
I know I've heard flyleaf before but only enough to recognize it in context. If quizzed, I probably would have answered it was the inside flaps of the wraparound dust cover on a hard back. Yesterday, I randomly learned the related terms verso and recto. Those were definitely new to me.
That’s one of the many things I love about this industry…there’s always something new to learn!
Great channel, I wanted to ask about ACX in regards to changing my Art cover. I went to projects and then completed projects (1) You don't have any titles meeting this criteria. My question is how do I change the Artwork? Thanks so much Dona
I had this issue before. I contacted support and they updated if for me.
Pretty "Fly" for a... LOL - anyways, had not heard of fly-leaf. Great video, Keith. Your energy and enthusiasm are amazing. You seem a really positive and good guy. Thank you for sharing with us. That one thumbs-down - is FROM a "thumbs-down" person. They can perk-up if they keep watching your videos.
Thank you so much for the kind words. The thumbs-downs don’t bother me anymore. I look at it as a badge of honor that I now have haters. 😂
How do you people not know basic terms most people learn as kids???..
Hi, I always understood that the immediate paper stuck to the front and back covers are both called Endsheets. The flyleaf as I understand (but not totally sure) is another separate thinner sheet which follows the Endsheets, or sometimes called Endpapers.
Very interesting. The fly leaf is what my traditional publisher called it so then I did more looking into it. I’m happy to learn alternative names. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for this video, very helpful. Does the book lie flat when open?
Yes, the cover lies flat on a surface. Some of the pages may stand up a bit, but that’s just due to the book not being broken in yet. As the spine gets settled in more, I imagine the pages will lose their rigidness.
Not helpful at all. He kept mentioning a basic word over and over again and never showed us the quality of the Smyth stitching in the signatures!
I have never heard of fly leaf! But I have heard of the terms verso/ recto. Verso is the left page and recto is the right.
Glad I could share a new term. I haven’t heard anyone say recto or verso in years. That’s so cool that you knew these terms! I wasn’t sure they were still be used!
I hope other viewers see your comment and learn even more terms. Thanks for sharing and for subscribing. It means the world to me!
I was surprised to see that I had the hardcover option as well since I only have one picture book on my account at the moment. It is slowly selling without adds.I am still very new to kdp and have so much to learn.
On a side note - I busy with my second picture book and was wondering when and how do you decide to use an editor. With my first book I just gave to a few teacher friends to read, but the new story is slightly longer and English is not my native language. Is a level 1 editor on fvrr
forth it?
Congratulations on getting organic sales. That’s very impressive. As for a children’s book editor, you’re in luck, next weeks video is going to be on this exact subject. I’ve hired 3 children’s book editors and I’ll provide info on how much they charged, what my experience is as with each and I’ll even include links to the editors I used.
But the short answer to your question is, I don’t pay too much attention to their seller status, because they could have 20 yrs experience editing books but if they’ve just joined Fiverr recently they’ll show as a new seller or level 1. I pay attention to how they communicate, both in the descriptions on their page as well as in the message communication I have with them prior to me hiring them.(also their reviews)
Just learning the name Fly Leaf. Had access and did a journal and another book.
Super exciting! Glad I could teach you a new term.
How do you people not know basic terms most people learn as kids???
Hey Keith! I can’t find the answer to this so I’m hoping you can tell me…if I have been accepted on Amazon Ignite am I able to publish there along with KDP? I’d like to offer my early reader in multiple formats. Thanks so much!
Technically, yes as long as you’re not enrolled in KDP Select.
That said, Amazon Ignite is not really for books, it’s for educational products used for teaching.(ie worksheets, flash cards, etc)
I noticed the hardcover option so I started one for an existing KDP children's book. The square format that I used for the paperback (8.5 x 8.5) was not offered. I would have to reformat everything. Stopped at that point. Thanks for your videos - so informative.
I completely understand! Hopefully, the additional trim sizes will be available soon.
Keith, what do you think about the normal quality of paperback kdp for planners and journals? I gave one to a friend who loved my design, but felt her pen would bleed too much. I wish kdp offered heavier paper with just b&w color to make price better... I like the idea of hard cover for journals, but again, inside paper feels light... thoughts? Thanks!
Ps no, never heard of fly leaf before lol
I hear ya. Personally, I’ve never created planners, but have plenty of journals out and have never had a complaint about ink bleeding through. But that’s just my experience.
@@KeithWheelerBooks good to hear! Can you say how many low content books u have in kdp? I started end of apr, have 40 books of different types, only a few sales. Due to family emergencies, I've slowed down, but determined to build up. Thanks!
Last count, I had a little over 300
@@KeithWheelerBooks thanks!
No problem! 👍
Is that hardcover you're showing matte or glossy? And which option is best for hardcovers? I usually go with matte for paperbacks.
It’s glossy. It really is a personal preference. I typically do glossy for children’s books and matte for everything else.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Thanks Keith. And thank you for such helpful and informative videos!
You’re very welcome!
Hi Keith, Please can you make a tutorial on "How to format a children's book for IngramSpark"
I sure can
I will look forward to watch it. Thanks. I learned from you on how to format in PowerPoint. I always remind and thankful to you. Thank you so much 👍
I’m glad you’ve found the channel helpful! 👍
I have the hard cover option but haven’t tried it yet. How are the pages fixed in the book? Would it be sturdy enough to make a 5 year diary, for example, or would the pages fall out with daily use?
The pages are attached the same way they are with the paperbacks, so it should be completely fine.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Thanks.
My pleasure!
Beautiful looking book. Anxious to know how she did her cover.
She hired a cover designer.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Was it expensive?
Not sure, but I’ll have her respond to this comment.
@@KeithWheelerBooks The book looks really interesting. I just ordered it on Amazon. It's always cool to read a new mystery novel.
Awesome! I’m sure Judy appreciates it!
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this question, but how do I get a license for a font for a novel that I plan to have published on KDP. Also are there free fonts out there. When people talk about fonts they usually refer to the covers of books. I want to know about the actual text of the novel. LOL
There are plenty of free fonts out there. You can also check out places like 1001fonts.com, etc. Just make sure that the interior is easy to read for your end user. Just because it looks cool, it has to be practical as well.
Best of luck! Keep us posted on how things are going! 😊👍
Wow.. I just used their calculator. If I want to do color printing it'll be $30 per book! Unbelievable considering B&N does it for SO much cheaper
It will depend on the page count, but yes, color printing does increase the price quote a bit.
fly leaf no I did not know lol, I have 4 up so far.
Congrats on the 4 books! That’s pretty impressive! Glad I could provide you some trivia.
I'm gonna be dreaming "flyleaf" in the coming days
😂
Can you tell me how it smells? I got a proof copy and not sure if it's the glue, but it smells so bad, I couldn't read it for more than 5 minutes.
I never noticed any aroma.
Looks very pro, applause to KDP
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised!
Do the pages lay flat?
In general, I have not had an issue with them laying flat, after a few uses.
Does it lay flat when open, I need to know this
No more or less than any other hardcover book you’ll find at a book store. Once it’s broken in it’ll stay open a bit more. If you want a book that lies completely flat, you’re best bet would be to create a spiral bound book. Lulu offers them and I did a spiral bound book unboxing in a previous video.
Note: Amazon doesn’t currently allow spiral bound books, so you’d have to sell them directly on your own website or send people over to Lulus store.
@@KeithWheelerBooks okay, thank you
Not a problem. Happy to help!
What is kdp beta?
KDP is now testing out offering hardcover books
@@KeithWheelerBooks Yes, I know they’re are testing hard covers. Loved the quality too. But what is the beta part of it?
Beta means they’re still testing it so it’s not available to everyone.
@@KeithWheelerBooks so how do you know if it’s available to you? From the kdp author dashboard where you upload books? How do they choose who gets the offer?
Yes, when you log into KDP, there will be box that says hardcover beta. It’ll be very evident.
hi inide somme nishes pliz
I'm not sure what you're requesting. Please clarify and I'll see if I can help.
Everyone knows what a flyleaf is. You spent half your video excited you learned a new word everyone learns when they are 3, but failed to show the actual binding. How about a closeup of the Smyth stitched signatures maybe?
I wasn’t excited that I learned a new word, I was excited to teach others who may not be aware.
@@KeithWheelerBooks lol What is it called in your language?
Not sure what you mean. I speak English.
@@KeithWheelerBooks Then how did you not know what a flyleaf was? Or think anyone wouldn't know? Lol You're an old man. What have you called it your whole life?
I knew what it was but people who watch my channel are from all over the world and all walks of life. It would be naive of me to assume everyone knows what a fly leaf is.
