Thanks for the video, I’m doing a 10 speed 11 x 42 this was very helpful. Clear, concise, and helpful angles many thanks. I also liked the old school thinking you way through problems.
A quick tip I learnt elsewhere and I did myself, after removing the old cassette and installing the inner spacer, use the plastic holder to push the new cassette on in one hit. My bike is a 2021 Giant Contend SL1 with 105 groupset with 11-34T cassette. I found jumps between ratios for mid to high gears a little wide, so I got a 11-32T (105) cassette and it suited me better without really compromising the climbing. Another thing to note, is 105 11-34T needs a spacer which is supplied, but the other 105 7000 range don't! The chain didn't need adjusting, plus I have a second identical wheel, so can swap whenever I want to.
Just put an 11-40 cassette on my Cannondale Quick Disc 1 to help on steeper off-road tracks (switched to 38mm cross tyres) - prev 50/34 chainring and 11-32 cassette, so same as yours - and found this very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks for the video - well done on the camera angles, audio and editing. Much appreciated. Came from your comment on Katie's video. Unfortunately I have a short mech and can't afford the change to a long on top of everything else at the mo, but great to see how it's done.
interesting vid, I may have to do similar to my 2009 Trek 1.7, it was originally 11-26t rear with 50-34t front and like yourself l live on the edge of the Peak District, and like yourself it's hard on the knees being over 50. The bug reveal was only just getting up Bank Road in Matlock! l get knee pain up in the hills on 30 mile plus rides so I've got a 11-34t , just hoping it'll work with a short cage and a hanger extender!
Great video! relaxing and informative, my knees feel better already. I had to buy a MTB rear derailleur on my steel old road mongrel bike since the smallest large-cog always has been a 32 or 34, it's a Tourney and it's labeled "long arm" (up to 43 teeth). I'll install my new 11-40 cassette on it soon. I hope I don't need the extension.
Really useful video. Exactly what I’m thinking of doing. Recently upgraded from 11-28 to 11-34 and bought the 105 R7000 medium cage to go with it. I’m hitting some big hills bike packing in NW Thailand (Mae Hong Son loop) in two weeks time and realise I’m going to massively struggle so this has been very helpful as a proof of concept. I see you mentioned you would report on the road test but I couldn’t find anything; apologies if I missed it. Would be great to hear any feedback you have on how it performed.
Thanks for this. I wanted to fit a 40 tooth cassette to a gravel bike I’m building from spare 105 bits. Wasn’t sure it would work from the Shimano specs. but this looks fine!
Thank you for making this video! Saw your comment on Katie's video. I think this is a rather informative piece that shows what she glides over. My LBS has warned about the potential for lockup if you miss shift into Big/Big. Have you experienced this in the time you've had this setup? Your derailleur appears to be doing exactly what they demonstrated in the shop to be worrisome on the 50/40 end of the spectrum. That being the stretched out mech and few teeth in the guide and jockey pulley making contact with the chain.
Hi Chris, thanks for watching! I've had no issues since doing the conversion and it has done 1K+ miles since doing it. Although you'd never ride with the chain on 'big big' its makes sense to check that it will safely change into big big in case you shifted like by by accident. With the road tooth link (that extends the rear mech reach) and a long cage rear mech with a long enough chain you shouldn't have any issues if you were to change to big big by accident, mine will change to big big without problem but the chain really is at its limit.
Great video 😊. I'm looking to do exactly the same conversion to my bike. Most of my rides are in the Lake District so this would help me get up the steeper passes. Have you had any issues out on the road?
Thanks for the video. I've been struggling to find information on this topic. Would I be able to do this with a 1x front chain ring? It's an oval 38t chain ring.
Hi stumbled upon your upload looking for advice on fitting a bigger cassette on my hybrid/gravel conversion. Its a 9 speed and I'm looking at 9 speed 11-40/42 in your opinion do you think I will need a spacer? Anyway to tell without your cool tool you used? Kr
Hi Mark The measuring tool is just a set of ‘feeler gauges’ that you can pick up for £3 on ebay! They are usually used for stuff like spark plug gap setting but useful for stuff like this, you just measure the gap on old cassette and compare to the new one. If you find 1-2mm bigger on the new cassette you get a spacer to fill that gap up. Good luck, the big cassette is great for my knees!
Would the same wolf tooth roadlink work on a Shimano Sora group set? I have a 11-32 9s cassette with 50/34 chainset? I would love to install the 40 cassette on my Domane ALR 3.
Hi there, You would need to find a 9 speed cassette that is compatible with your shimano free hub. Have a look at 9 speed shimano compatible mtb cassettes. I did a quick search and the FOMTOR 11-40 on amazon looks like it’d work
Top notch. Attention to detail and totally watchable. Thanks!
Couldn't agree more.
Very detailed video of the process. I'm going to add an 11-42 to the rear of my 105 setup and this video will really help. Thanks for posting.

About to attempt this with a 105 10 speed. Glad to know it was possible. Any advice?

Brilliant video. I was not at all surprised to see it working well in the end.
Excellent. Comprehensive run through. Much appreciated

How did you get on Ross I am just about to have a go at this. What road link did you get in the end and what cassette fits the R7000 11-40? cheers
@@oxharp I stuck with the 11-34 in the end. Currently in Chiang Mai having my rear hub bearings looked at before we set off tomorrow…
Great video. This is exactly what I want to do. Can you post a link to the parts you used?

Was your 105 rear derailleur a short or long cage? I want to do this but I have a short cage. - edit I see you explained at 22 min!

thank tou. How was the road testing?
Excellent video. Thanks for posting
Great vid mate. Did the conversion prove problem free in use ?
Would it be too much on the bike using an 11-40 cassette on a 11-28 9s road bike with 50-34 chainring? The bike has a Shimano Sora groupset.

Do you need roadlink? B srew isnt enough??
Hi Andy, yes mate, roadlink (or a clone in my case) it’s on the table at 2.15 in the video 👍
@@apikersprogress but isn't IT possible to do IT without roadlink??
Anyone try this with a GRX setup?
