Thanks for the guide, just installed an 11-40 cassette on my road bike and I love it! Interestingly, before cutting the chain, I sized it using both the small-small and big-big method, and the length came out the exact same. It's weird Shimano has such conservative recommendations, right now my setup requires 45t of capacity, which is significantly more than the 39t listed in the specs of my R8000 derailleur, yet I can use all gear combinations without any excess chain slack.
Mega. Planning on running this next season-I'm currently running 34/34 but for many of my races in the Blue Ridge Mountains my legs are cooked by the end of a long day.
Ultegra RX RD supposed to accomodate a max low cog of 34, and a total capacity of 39t. We're wayy over that here and I see it works anyway so I'm doing it next time I need to hit the steep steep roads. I have 50/34 and 11/34 right now which is at shimano's max 39t total and the max cog of 34. Great to find this.
Kind regards from Tasmania. Excellent coverage of the subject matter; many thanks. I have arranged my bike shop to do exactly this for me before collecting my new GRX810 gravel bike (due next week). Some other shops would probably refuse but I like my shop because they think outside the square like you do. Again thanks; excellent clear explanation with absolutely no waffle; the perfect mix. 😀
Great video, very useful as usual. What I don't fully understand is this freehub spacer. What is a spacer for? You took off road cassette and put MTB cassette but still used the spacer so it can't be the cassette offset. Difference must be in the feehub body itselt. I have DT Swiss weel with MTB freehub a 11-40 XTR cassette and RX800 rear deraileur. Do I need to use any spacers to make it work on a gravel bike with Ultegra road shifters?
Thank you so much for putting this video up! Really helped!! I think out of panic I would have made other adjustments to the other screws and mess it up.
Your chain whip tool is intriguing - do you have a link to it? I find the classic whip to be less than satisfactory! Which model of cassette do you use?? Great video and explanation - one commenter explained why a spacer was needed, in that the mountain bike cassette is not flat like a road cassette.
Great video. Have an 11 speed road hub with a shimano 11-42 MTB cassette. I noticed play when moving the cassette right to left on the hub. Is that play normal? I have no play when moving the cassette up and down due the spacer I used. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for this video👍🏻 I‘ve got a Shimano Ultegra Di2 8000, 50-34 with dirailleur RD-RX 805 GS. Do you think this also will work with a 11-40 casette? Thanks for your help🙏
Great video. I thought you can only go as high as 11-34 with 50-34 in the front? Any worries you will damage the derailleur? Looks like you have the long cage, which is what i run.
My mistake, it is indeed a Ultegra RX not GRX so it is 50-34. Many reviewers have commented that Shimano are quite conservative with their maximum cassette size, there are others doing this with a GRX815 which is the gravel equivalent of the electric Ultegra but not a well explained as this video.
Hi i have 52/36 front Ultegra R8000 crank with 11/28 cassette in rear with SRAM Etap 11 speed RD it's Standard short cage version want to have 11-34 or 11-32 atleast for better hill climbing. Let me know will just b tension screw and longer chain swap will work or do I need Roadlink wolftooth or similar. Thank you
@@FreeToCycle how it's possible? I don't understand.Road rs505 stuff how compatible with mtb casette? it has not different scale between the sprockets? Thank you! Big up!
I have a di2 rd-rx805 11/34 and 46/30 Oval. I want to put a 11/40 on but bike shop says it won’t work. After watching this I don’t necessarily agree with them. I know they worry about cross chaining but I don’t do that anyway. Thoughts?
I think because it's a mountain bike cassette on which the back of the big cog is not flat like the road cassette otherwise you'll have a play in the cassette. I had the same issue before watching this video. Hope this will help.
I bought a CSM 7000 Cassette (11-40) and tried to fit it with this exact same ultegra detrailleur...but somehot the spacing seems to be wider that on the regular ultegra cassette...I thought the spacing was supposed to be exactly the same on all 11 speed cassettes? Did I miss something?I used calipers to measure the distance between the individual sprockets, and there seemed to be a larger gap between the CSM7000 gears than between the ultegra gears, so that there was no possibility to index correctly...Is that possible or am I just completely stupid? ;) thanks!!
I think I have the same issue too. I was switching from slx 11-34 that was originally installed on my topstone 1 with 11-40 slx and I have this weird noise while pedaling =\ Did you find a solution or have you tried xt cassette?
hello there, I tried again, and this time, all went well…indexing was as easy as with the original cassette. No idea what was wrong the first time, but since I installed it, I did around 1000km without any issue 🤠 so I guess you need to check that everything is seated correctly and you may have to index your shifting freshly. parktools has a brilliant video on how to adjust rear derailleurs, in case you sometimes struggle to get it right :) good luck!!
@@tidalwavestudio I have even installed new slx chain but there is some weird m metalic noise. Just to double check: you do have spacing ring at the base of a cassette? (I had it installed with 11-34)
The chain sizing advice is so simple compared to other videos I've watched and it wasn't even the main topic!
Excellent step by step video. Following along i was able to upgrade my gravel bike to an 11-40 cassette without any issues.

I never knew you could slide a cassetted directly on in one piece like that ,thats cool

Another excellent video I’ll have to try it many bike shop said it can’t be done but now I can see that it can be done so I’m gonna give it a go bro
Good job, very educational...now I dare to do it myself ...👍🏻
Just picked up a new bike with 2x grx 800 mechanical. Came with 11-34t going to switch it out to xtr 11-40t. Your video helped a lot.

It work only if the derailleur is GS cage.
Love these videos , very well presented
Great video, as usual
Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Only need to go upto 36 from a 32 so happy days.
which cassette would you use? I can´t find one between 34 and 40... cheers!
Why did you need a spacer to fit the bigger cassette?
I think because it's a MTB cassette so normally fits on a wider axle
Very helpful- thanks

You may be right but I think he said it was a 48-31 (sub-compact) chainring which is standard for GRX810.

No reason why it wouldn’t work! As long as you can adjust the B-screw enough then you will be fine.
