As an aside, does anyone else in the UK feel a bit jealous that Americans and Canadians do their bike repairs in spaces we would call 'commercial premises for cars' while we do our repairs at a kitchen table with a seething wife nearby?

Thanks for the guidance! I did the same thing and it's working perfectly fine!! If you didn't take a link out, the chain must be 116L not 114L as you mentioned on the other video. The package says so on this video though the tension on big/big looks tighter than my 116L chain.
That's close! Wonder if you could add a rear derailleur extension to help with that. I used one a 1x conversion. Took a short cage 105 and with the extension it handled an 11/40 cassette. Been a few hundred miles and still works flawlessly. Love your CheckPoint! Recently purchase the 2021 ALR 5. Came with 46/30 up front. Great climber!
Jim Clavin thanks! Yes you could add a road link but after a little adjusting it’s working great!! My brother just got the 2021 ALR 5 in matte black and it came with GRX 48/42 crank.
Thank you for the very informative video ! I would like to do the same thing on my bike which has a shimano 105 50/34 at the front , and grx 810 with a 11-34 cassette at the back. Just wondering if I have to change the chain, or if the one I have with the 11-34 would work. Do you have any idea ?
32 44 dual would work smoother and still give you rock crawling gears, i can go up stuff v slowly on my 1x11 which is 32 chainring 11 - 42 cassette, i would dare say if i rode with a 36 up front I would have the best of both worlds, I'm lucky to have the push in my legs :) and able to spin it fast on road sections :) also good training for when you need to pick up speed fast on the trails :)
My 105 "decent" road bike has the 50/34 x 11-34 combo with GS mech, I've also got an older Tiagra 4600 specced bike which I'm planning to convert to "mountain" spec- It's 50/34 x 12-36 at the moment but looking into an FSA Tempo 46/30 crankset and an 11-40 cassette as the "old" M592 SGS can take 45T capacity so no issues over slack chain, though for all I'm ever in the highest gear I could just go 11-42 and adjust the high screw so the 13T is the limit.... Bike manufacturers really need to wake up and listen to what the public need, seems every road and gravel bike I see is hideously overgeared never mind carrying any bikepacking kit as an extra!! The folk that are happy with close ratios and 25/28T low gears usually live where it's flat..I'm in the Scottish Highlands and would take lower gears any day than stupid huge downhill gears!!
No need for a spacer on the 40 cassette? Just go a Checkpoint on the weekend. I had Frankensteined my Trek 720 with a 40 rear cassette and standard 50 -34 chainrings. With the smaller 46-30 chainrings on the Checkpoint I'm expecting that a larger cassette on the rear should be pretty good. Got up some 22% long hills, but the shifting in mid range is a bit odd. @@PAPADPOV Haha I hear you. I'm no spring chicken myself. I have a 50-34 up front matched w/ 11-28 on my roadie and I am looking to swap the 34 for a 36..it's useless for me. My hybrid has a triple up front 50-39-30 matched w/ 11-32 Have some off gravel tires on and I can tackle anything with the set-up. Pure over kill. I had bad IT band problem on my right leg/knee 2 years ago. Stretching saved my life. It was really bad to the point that I couldn't ride. I need to ride. I caught the bug 4 years ago (more serious cycling). Stretch before and after imo.
I can understand where you are coming from on the IT band problem. Been dealing with that a lil lately myself.....it actually pushed me to try this set up to have more range off road.

I am using the derailleur that came on the bike as is.....no modifications at all. I am also using a standard chain straight out of the box with no links removed.
Hi Papa D! I am fitting in an 11-42 cassette on my Checkpoint. I have a 52/36 crank. I was able to set-up the 52 crank and 42 cassette but having trouble with 36 crank and 42 cassette. The chain slacks off. Is there a way I can fix this? I used a Deore M4120 SGS RD with Tanpan. Thank you!

Great video, thanks for sharing. I want to be able to swap back and forth between my 700c road wheels and 700c gravel wheels. Do you know if that's possible with the longer chain needed to accommodate the XT 11-40? If not, do you know what the largest rear cassette would be that I can use on my gravel wheels while still being able to swap back to my road wheels?
If you swap your cassette from one wheel set to another the setup should be extremely close......I do that myself.....I have 2 wheel sets with different tires and I just use the same cassette when I change from one to the other

That is what I did so I wouldn’t have to switch the cassette all the time.....I just didn’t say that earlier because it is an additional investment. Depending on how often you switch the wheel sets it could be a good investment...lol

Ben London thanks! I did not change anything on my 105 derailleur or the stick hanger. I just used the B screw adjustment tires get the needed clearance to run the 11-40 cassette. Not sure if the new chain was mandatory but my original chain was shorter than the new chain so I didn’t want to take a chance.
I just bought a Checkpoint SL last month. I was wondering if you could give an update on how the lower gears do in getting you up those hills? I live on the Wabash in Coal Country. We have huge steep hills I can't pedal up. Mine has the GRX 810 rear derailleur designed for 11-34T 11 speed. I contacted WolfTooth about their extension which will not work completely. I think I'm going to need to swap out the derailleur for the GRX 812 which is designed for the 11-40T cassette. That's why I'm so curious how your hill climbing has improved so I know it's the right thing to do. Looking forward to your comments.

Mine was an 11-40 and I had absolutely no problems just had to adjust the screw and I used a new chain…..I did have a gentleman in here that told me he used the 11-42 cassette and it worked also…..so hopefully everything goes well my friend!!

Still going good....every now and then it will shift a lil slow up in to the 40 tooth ring but it’s barely worth mentioning....every 500 miles I readjust the cable and it seems good to go!
I want to upgrade to a 11-42 cassette for my road bike. Most large range cassettes are MTB compatible. Is there any difference between MTB and road cassette? Is it just marketing BS?
The Mtn bike cassette will work as long as you use the same brand /Shimano or SRAM cassette to match your group set….the problem you will run in to is if you have a short cage rear derailleur the larger cassette will not work for you

s Carvalho I know exactly what you are talking about.....I am a lil OCD about how my gears shift and this has been the only thing about the change that has bothered me.....mine does it also....not terrible but it can be annoying at times when you are in a long ride and you are tired...lol....have taken it into the bike shop and talked to the guys but since the 105 derailleur is only spec’ed for a 36 max cassette I think I am going to have to live with it for now....will let you know when/if I come up with anything that will help out.....thanks for the comment!!
PAPA D POV I’m going to mess with the cable tension. Also random thought. I’m going to look at my 34 cassette and see if I can take that ring out of the 34 and shorten that one big jump.
@@christinamantzou8559 usually with that set up you can use a standard length chain right out of the box.....after you install it if you have too much slack on the chain you can remove 2 links and you should be pretty close to awesome!
I have Shimano 105 on this bike and I bought a brand new chain and did not change the length.....the length of the chain on the stick set up from Trek had a shorter chain on it
Dunno a 2:3 ratio at 90 rpm was definitely better than jogging the bike up the hill at 4.5 mph. I drew the line at giving a backy up Bathwick hill in bath though.

actually you can go to a 38 without a link if it's GRX, problem with a 40 or 42 is that the B screw does not sit flush with the RD.

Not 100% sure about that because I have an 11 speed. The crank will not be an issue and I imagine if you can find the cassette you can make it work.

did u use some spacer for the cogs? some builders install a spacer on the freehub body for the cogs.. i don't know they install it..

I am running the stock Bontrager Paradigm wheel set. It is a 700c wheel set with 19.5 mm internal rim width.

If the 1:1 gear is not enough getting off and walking may be the best option and the fastest way up the hill.
If that’s what works for you then that would probably be best 😄
Dunno a 2:3 ratio at 90 rpm was definitely better than jogging the bike up the hill at 4.5 mph. I drew the line at giving a backy up Bathwick hill in bath though.

What brand and # for the tool that removes the cassette ?
You need a chain whip.( look it up on Amazon) You will need Park Tool FR-5.2G Cassette Lockring Tool with Guide Pin 5 mm and a Crescent Wrench.
