11-40T Cassette on my gravel bike, some common questions answered.
Просмотров 23 тыс.3 года назад
I have a Trek Checkpoint gravel bike that I installed an 11-40T cassette on. I am running a Shimano 105 groupset on the bike and Shimano's spec says no bigger than an 11-34T cassette will work. I posted a previous video on the installation of this cassette and this video will be answering some of the common questions that I get asked. Day Creek Gravel Ride on the Trek Checkpoint

Todays ride was at Day Creek in Montvale,Va. It was a 37 mile gravel ride in and around the Blue Ridge Parkway with 4000 ft of climbing. It was a very hot and humid day. When it was all said and done I was wiped out after this ride! You can see from this video that the Trek Checkpoint can handle all kinds of terrain. Up and down and up and down we went. This is a rails to trails route with my brother trying out his new Checkpoint for the first time on gravel.Meeting up in Farmville which is just about in the middle of the route. Fitting an 11-40 rear cassette on a Trek Checkpoint Gravel Bike with Shimano 105
Просмотров 33 тыс.4 года назад
I replaced the stock Shimano 105 11-34 cassette with a Shimano XT 11-40 cassette and did not have to use a road link to make this work. Adjusting the B screw all the way in on the deraiuler was the only major difference between the 105 cassette and this gave me the needed clearence. I just needed the extra climbing gears. I ride gravel and lots of fire roads and single track in the mountains so...

actually you can go to a 38 without a link if it's GRX, problem with a 40 or 42 is that the B screw does not sit flush with the RD.
Thanks 💪💪🚲🚲🖐🖐
Hell yeah man, 55 years old you look much younger. Benefits of physical activity!
@@MediumHalf thank you my friend!!
Thanks a lot, 3 years later, I'm with your digital help, to change my 11-28 cassette with a 11-40, so that I cann climb small mountains 😅
Awesome!!!
Very helpful! Would a GRX-RX812 also work out? Better than a RX810? Thanks man!
@@flintenwilli2444 not sure? I have never tried that?
Thank you for the very informative video ! I would like to do the same thing on my bike which has a shimano 105 50/34 at the front , and grx 810 with a 11-34 cassette at the back. Just wondering if I have to change the chain, or if the one I have with the 11-34 would work. Do you have any idea ?
@@gregturbe9123 I don’t believe I had to change mine
Nice video. I’m about to jump to 11-42 cassette too. Do you have to put a 1.85mm spacer before you fit the 11-40 cassette? Thanks
@@albertandal8447 I have a Shimano free hub and I did have to use the spacer
Subscribed, I watched the installation video you made, it's a great info, I was worrying I'll purchase too large cog for my stock derailleur. With the hanger extender, I can go up to 40T.. thanks a lot. More power !
With a 50-34 in the front you could just have changed the smaller chainring to a 32, shimano says their derailleurs only work with 16 teeth difference but its actually 18, its the same with their non shadow rear derailleurs saying their max cog is 36 but its actually 42
'got 11-40 cassette with 44/24, 9 speed
I like the video. I’m looking to put a 11-40 cassette on my 2x GRX400 drivetrain. Wanted to go 1x but like you I don’t want to blow my knees out.
I totally understand that my friend!
Music to my ear. I've just purchased a Cannondale Slate with stock Ultegra rear derailluer. I picked up a GRX810 for $60, so will be slapping on a 11-40 cassette!!!
Sounds Awesome!!
Any ever remember seeing a pond back in that area? Somewhere right off blackhorse gap rd
Not that I recall?
thank you for sharing..this will be a big help to me on my set up
Your welcome!
If you go across the creek and go right on the path there is a deep swimming hole that’s about 4-5 feet deep
What tool are you using to clamp your cut mark on the fork
It is a fork cutting tool….look them up on Amazon…..you can get a more inexpensive one on there and it’s not something that you use all the time so it doesn’t have to be the best out there. You can also use the tool to cut your handlebar ends also. Great tool actually!
Want to upgrade cassette on a Trek Checkpoint ALR4 2021. Presently using Shimano Tiagra HG500, 11-34, 10 speed. Can I upgrade to 11-40, 10 speed? Also my Crank is GRX RX600, 46/30 170mm length. Should crank be upgraded to accommodate 11-40 cassette?
Not 100% sure about that because I have an 11 speed. The crank will not be an issue and I imagine if you can find the cassette you can make it work.
great video Papa D 👍
Thanks!!
Now I can see a bright future in front of me as the 56 yo Cyclist that I am. Soon I will be chrisfrooming up the hills like a goat.
Very helpful. I'm currently riding a 11-28 cassette with a medium length rear derailleur. An 11-30 cassette would help me enormously, an 11-32/34 would be a dream. Thanks mate.
Did you have to add a 1.8mm spacer? Ive heard that mrb cassettes are shorter than road cassettes.. edit. Just read the last comment.
I just saw your video. Did you use the same bearing or crown from judy to the fox?
Yes I did 👍
Bought my first Gravel Bike 2 weeks ago. Checkpoint driftless and it‘s awesome. I didn‘t own a bike for 29 years and now I can‘t go off from it.
👏👏👏, thank you.
i picked up a used '18 Roscoe 8 a few months ago, and this week got a '21 140mm Fox 34 Factory for it. Looking forward to getting it on the bike this weekend.
You will enjoy it!
Just got the 2023. thanks for the video
Your welcome! Awesome bike!
Hi there. Did you install a spacer on the freehub when fitting the cassette?
Yes…..I used a 2nm spacer
fucking wicked ride bro
Thanks! That’s always a stressful descent…..lol
Hi dad pov🫡 can you help me? Help me!! Which gearbox model did you mount? Medium cage or long cage? Thank you so much
My bike came with Shimano 105 R7000, long cage rear derailleur. That is the one I used in this video 😀
Grazie 🤟🏽
Hi dad pov🫡 can you help me? Help me!! Which gearbox model did you mount? Medium cage or long cage? Thank you so much
Would love to help if you can translate to English?
i tried to look up the chainstay length of your bike which seems to be 425, i have a 2022 giant tcr advanced 2 disc, which has the same 105 50/34 and 11/34 setup but with a 405 chainstay length, would i need to use a shorter chain than yours? this is my first road bike, used to ride a flatbar gravel bike which had a 46/30 crank and a 11-36 cassette, kinda miss the 0.83 gear ratio during climbs.
Not sure what length chain you have on your bike stock but if you change over to the bigger cassette your chain will have to be longer.
@@PAPADPOV it's 110 now, i think i definitely need to buy a new one.
Good to know!
My 105 "decent" road bike has the 50/34 x 11-34 combo with GS mech, I've also got an older Tiagra 4600 specced bike which I'm planning to convert to "mountain" spec- It's 50/34 x 12-36 at the moment but looking into an FSA Tempo 46/30 crankset and an 11-40 cassette as the "old" M592 SGS can take 45T capacity so no issues over slack chain, though for all I'm ever in the highest gear I could just go 11-42 and adjust the high screw so the 13T is the limit.... Bike manufacturers really need to wake up and listen to what the public need, seems every road and gravel bike I see is hideously overgeared never mind carrying any bikepacking kit as an extra!! The folk that are happy with close ratios and 25/28T low gears usually live where it's flat..I'm in the Scottish Highlands and would take lower gears any day than stupid huge downhill gears!!
I've been looking at this one, and it looks like most of your cons have been fixed in the updated model.
Are you using a medium or long range derailleur
Long cage
Hi Did you leave the 1.8mm spacer on the hub before you fitted the cassette?
Yes I did use the spacer with the new cassette.
Nice, I have the same specs on my Crux with a short cage I want to change to a 40 like you. Question why didn't you go with a long rear derailer ?
I wasn’t sure the long derailleur would work besides I didn’t have one……lol
How good is 11x42 teeta cassette?
What size crankset?
At first that was working fine; but a few months later it's gone crazy. I changed the shifting cable and checked other points; but it's not fixed yet. I guess the derailleur itself must be broken! In your case, is it still working fine? I think I should change the derailleur to GRX one (RD-RX812).
Yes it’s still working great!!
@@PAPADPOV It was not the derailleur problem, just caused by the short of grease on the cables. Now it's working great again!!
@@ktee55 awesome!
How many links did you end up taking off the 116 link chain ?
I used a new chain with 116 links and did not remove any.
Hi Papa D! I am fitting in an 11-42 cassette on my Checkpoint. I have a 52/36 crank. I was able to set-up the 52 crank and 42 cassette but having trouble with 36 crank and 42 cassette. The chain slacks off. Is there a way I can fix this? I used a Deore M4120 SGS RD with Tanpan. Thank you!
When you say slacks off? Not sure What you mean? Lol
@@PAPADPOVLol. Sorry, i mean it is loose, but big ring to big ring, the chain length is just enough. it may have something to do with the rear derailleur? it may not be putting enough tension?
@@ryantorres1818 possibly the spring tension on the rear derailleur? How old is the rear derailleur?
Useful video. So on the chain that you have, did you get exactly 114 links when your chain was already installed? Thanks!
I used a brand new Shimano 11 speed chain and I did not remove any links. I believe it was 114 or 115 links total. Thanks for the question.
What brand and # for the tool that removes the cassette ?
You need a chain whip.( look it up on Amazon) You will need Park Tool FR-5.2G Cassette Lockring Tool with Guide Pin 5 mm and a Crescent Wrench.
@@PAPADPOV ... I have two chain whip and a socket but just needed the park tool FR-5.2G , thanks
@@goodboyringo9716 your welcome!
Hello, I bought a trek checkpoint alr 5 2023 and as I can see you changed your discs. I’d like to exchange them too. Is that posible? And, do you think this is just an aesthetic change or something else changes • My discs are Shimano SM-RT70, centerlock, 160mm. And I’d like to exchange them for SHIMANO Ultegra R8000 do you think is that possible?
I am not sure if you can exchange them but you could check with whoever you bought the bike from. The Ultegra will work in your bike. If you cannot exchange them you can shop for them and buy them and swap them out yourself.
@@PAPADPOVAre you still riding ? I haven't seen any current videos .
@@codyepperson4795 still riding just have older parents that need some extra care so my time to video is limited….thanks for asking!
@@PAPADPOV I understand completely. I wish you and your family the best .
Great informative flick , Im gonna try the setup myself . But with GRX 1x11 derailur bolted on a 50/34 105 rings with 11/42 in the back to see how it goes , Cheers
Thanks! Sounds interesting, let me know how it works!
Hi. I tried installing 11/50 tooth cassette to my 2x setup and it is rubbing the cassette to my derauleurs. Im using shimano 105 medium cage. My previous setup is 11/37 by 2x. I saw this video of yours and its very interesting. Will this work?
You installed an 11/50 cassette or an 11/40 cassette?
I used 11/40
a triple chain ring on the front does the same thing-easier to adjust
Actually no but to each his own my friend! 👍
You got a lot more gear duplication / crossover with a triple chainset
Thanks for this and the previous installation video. I have a 2020 SL5 checkpoint with the RD7000 GS derailleur and I changed my 11-34 spd 105 cassette for a Shimano SLX 11 spd 11-40 cassette no problem. I wasn't sure about the spacer but my original cassette had a 2 mm spacer behind it and I left it in place for the new one. The 11-40 cassette lined up perfectly with my derailleur, I only needed to adjust the b screw completely inwards to give me 5 mm spacing between the guide pulley and the 40t sprocket (while in the smallest chainring). I can shift to large-large and small-small no problem, though both combos rub the front derailleur. Now I can climb those steep inclines a little easier!
That is awesome! Glad to be of service!
