    Thanks very much for doing that.
    Strange noises were coming from the front off-side wheel on my 2004 Caddy.
    It turned out to be the the dust guard floating around and all three mounting points had rotted away.
    It always annoys me when manufacturers put the cheapest bit of mild steel rubbish where it gets the most attack from grit and wet.
    It wouldn't cost much more to do it in galvanized steel or a structural plastic, plus some stainless screws.
    I was looking at it wondering how the hell to get at the screws, but take the disk off, how simple is that?
    Trust some idiot to put one screw where you can't properly get at it.

      You're very welcome. It does seem that the dust guards are overlooked as most of my cars I've ever owned have badly corroded (after approx 10 yrs). Knowing this, I guess for the cost we should replace these much sooner or at least change the bolts. :-)

    Damn but mine were rusty and the shields, what was left of them were rotten. 1/4" is a good tip HBH. I knew I was going to have to replace the bolts so I ground a slight notch on each head and drifted them round with a hammer and punch.

    Hi I’ve a seat Leon FR 2016 I had to remove the backing plate, is it worth getting it replaced,a lot of people said they have just removed there’s,obviously there on for a reason, what would you recommend 👍

    • @HatBoyHarvey

      Yes, if you live in the UK or other cold northern environments as they protect the discs/pads from road grim, grit, stones and importantly winter salting which will increase wear and could lead to brake failure. They also protect hot discs from cold water puddles hitting the discs which increase cracking and warping. A simple little thing that look useless, but is actually very useful. Your brakes will still work without them as they don't actually effect the braking system. I don't believe it is an MOT failure :-)

    My issue is the rear ones, badly corroded. Hopefully even with discs, it should be a similar approach..😮

      Yes, but not similar on reflection. I renewed those on mine, but I think I had to take the hub off to do it and then fit new super hight tensile bolts.

    I wonder if a ringer spanner could remove that middle one with a bit of patience, heat, penetrating oil and a wire brush

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  3 года назад +1

      No, don't do it, if there at all corroded use a socket as they round off very very easily, just a warning my friend :-)

    Hello again. I have an issue with abs and now we are three onboard :). It is a 2003 Fabia. I thinked that before the abs works when pressing the pedal the brakes act like normal brakes. What is happening is that sometimes, in irregular paviments, when I press the pedal the abs starts working immediately and the car goes loose without breaking action a while. Then finally starts breaking. I think this is dangerous if we are close to another car or in a cross road. What do you think about this? I already thinked in disabling the abs system. Thank you for the possible help.

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  3 года назад

      Hi, congrats for the new one :). I've also noticed this on occasions and it is quite worrying. If the road is slightly damp or has a little sand on it or going downhill sometimes it happens. Doesn't give a lot of confidence I know. All I can say is make sure the brakes are in the best shape possible/bled fully with new fluid. The ABS unit can be bled with VAGCOM (under basic settings) which may or may not help. The ABS sensors on each wheel hub maybe giving out bad signals also so consider replacing, but are hard to get out when old, but at least cheap to buy :-)

    • @ruimvp
      @ruimvp 3 года назад

      @@HatBoyHarvey thank you. "It is a boy!" :) It is a good information to know that this happens in another similar cars. You know if the bad sensors give error code? The car always had garage, maybe not to difficult to change the sensors.

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  3 года назад

      You're a lucky guy :). Thinking about it a warped disc could cause the abs to come on early also loose ball joints, wishbone arm bushes etc so all worth a check over. Faults will light up the ABS warning light if they fail completely, but that isn't happening with yours, but still could be giving wrong signal. different code for each sensor. The reluctor ring is moulded into the wheel bearing on these, so unlikely to cause fault. . I did an early video on the sensors ruclips.net/video/anpvuq9S-GU/видео.html the wiring to thee can get damaged :-)

      I will see the video for sure. I already have new trw discs and pads at home. I bought them in May because the prices went down because the pandemic. But I am waiting for when change tyres in the rain period. Maybe with new brake system the things get better has you say. Thank you very much and healthy life.

      @@HatBoyHarvey I have been thinking about this subject. Do you think it is possible that the abs issue is because of the 185/60 tyres? The car registry book in my country allows two sizes of tyres. 185/60 and 165/70. It has the 185/60. Maybe because of the increased grip the abs acts early thinking that the wheels are blocking?

    No way was this going to work on my Audi A2, the small screws were totally rusty and I'm sure would have sheared off. I used a small Dremel gas torch to heat the screw heads and then doused them in water, heated once again and only then continued as you have shown. I suspect a lot of these dust shield are left off because the screws have been sheared off.

      Where heat doesn't help, cold might.
      I had a very irreplaceable set screw in a vintage sewing machine that wasn't going to shift.
      I bought a wide flat blade screwdriver bit and ground it down to a very tight fit in the slot.
      No amount of screw release helped.
      Squirted the head with plumbing pipe freezer and gently applied pressure with a socket bar and after over 90 years, it shifted.

      Hi Lisi Hoxha, the measurements are for the thickness of the pad and do vary a little, but not so much to worry about as long as they are specified for your particular cars model they will fit. Hope this helps :-)
