@@BudgetMechanicHawaii Hello, i have a question and i think you know the answer. :) About that grinding audio sample from video... Few days ago i was stuck in a mud. I was trying to get out and the car was all in mud. Everywhere.. Brakes, callipers, discs, springs, shocks... I washed it 10 hours later and everything was ok. Next day i started the car and when i startto move slowly i heard EXACTLY that sound from your video for about 20 seconds of driving. Now every time when i sit in the car the same thing happens, few seconds of that sound and than ok. Any idea? Thank you.
This was very informative and you explained in a way that us car illiterate folks can understand . Thank you I appreciate the time you took to add the squeak and grind sounds as well! 👍🏾
Just wanted to add my experience to help anyone trying to diagnose problems. The second noise (the one at 6:36) was similar to the sound we heard from the front brakes of our vehicle. We brought it into the shop to get new brake pads on warranty and the mechanic said that the brake pads were gone. Like, he graded them at the 0 percentage. He said we shouldn't have really been driving on them. The grinding had also damaged the rotors a little bit so the two front rotors were replaced (they had already been resurfaced previously due to a different brake issue so we had to replace this time). Just my experience with the noise and the result. Good luck with your vehicles, folks!
Going through that rn unfortunately I can only handle the pads this week, so I just need to keep the car in town with family but thankfully it's doesn't sound like it's end of the world since I'm up in Buffalo and it's getting into the bad part of winter so a lot of snow could kill me
Been hearing a very faint squeak when I DON’T push the brakes, goes away when I do. I knew that brake pads had a warning indicator but I wondered if that’s what I was hearing. I clicked on this video hoping to get some answers and sure enough, you answered my question exactly. Thanks!
Thank you! I was FREAKING out over the sounds my car was making yet I couldn't explain it to anyone! The grinding sound you showed is exactly the same that I'm hearing! I have never changed brakes on my own so this will be a first for me! Keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for the insight!
Glad I found your video because that second sound is the sound I'm hearing and you are so right, it wasn't happening the other day and now it just started. Thank you for actually helping and not being a loser tryna get views very insightful clear instructions with different causes and effects for certain noises 10/10 appropriate you
Here is a condition I experienced. 1st off, 47yrs driving, I always do my own brake work. I installed Posi-quiet heavy duty metallic pads because my Sienna was not stopping well with the trailer loads I was pulling across NJ A few months after I finished trailering my brakes were lightly squeaking just rolling. The dust from the metallic pads rusted the caliper traveler pins to my calipers, causing my pads to constantly rub the rotor. I installed new caliper pin kits and POWER STOP Evolution ceramic pads last year. The pads cost $8 than Posi-quiet premium pads. The Evolution pads are designed to replace OEM They exceeded my expectations
What fantastic, clear explanations! I was looking for a better understanding of my brake pads Ihave just had changed and also my discs soon to be changed. I wanted to understand how they wear down and which parts exactly as I was given a photo of my brake discs I need to have changed soon. The sounds are a brilliant addition and you are just so clear in how you describe everything. THANK YOU!!!
I think you answered my question! Grinding in the rear of a 2011 MINI COOPER S R60 I just got and the pads have plenty of meat! The previous owner must have ridden the ebrake! Getting new pads to see if it goes away. Thank you!
Super impressed with this dude and how he delivered the information so that literally anybody can understand and identify the issue at hand! VERY well done my guy! hands down the best (and easiest) car fix vid ive seen to date!! u have a new subscriber and a like my friend. thanks
now this is how u explain stuff to people who dont know. now i know the 2nd one is my current issue. so pads are gone and rotors may need replacement , im getting the scraping sound.
So glad came across this video. That grinding is exactly how my rear driver wheel sounds but combine that with like a click. I have no idea what it is because we took the pads off and they looked fine. But it happened exactly how u said too one day jus fine the next all of a sudden while driving. The sound makes you freak out. I thought my whole tire was about to collapse.
I have a 2021 Chevy Trailblazer and the way you explained glazed break pads sounds like what I’m dealing with! I have taken my car to 4 Chevy dealers and a outside mechanic but they said everything is fine. I have loud squeaking/squealing noise mainly in the morning when I first drive my car.
Thanks! I did my brakes a while ago and forgot, since I did so much work on my old car--ARG! I will listen for the sounds and get new pads if it continues.
Back in the 20th century I used to get my rotors turned when I did brake jobs on my cars. Now I just buy new rotors on Amazon with the pads. It's no more expensive than turning, and I can always find other uses for old rotors.😁
@@BudgetMechanicHawaii I finally found the scraping/grinding noise coming from the metal clips that were holding the pads. Installed incorrectly, and they were actually upside down, the metal clip touches the rotor, no wonder why I got the scraping/grinding noise. At first, I thought it was the old rotors/pads but actually, it was the hardware. Nonetheless, I replaced some new rotors & pads, mostly very quiet, day and night different. The only thing now I noticed is when I turn my steering wheel to both left or right sides, I noticed very light "scraping" noise but when I drive straight then it is quiet.
Jason Yip possibly still the clips. I OFTEN have to bend or otherwise slightly modify the clips of new hardware to avoid them touching the rotor. When you’re turning, things can flex just enough to tough slightly. Check the rotor for lines where the clips may be occasionally rubbing
Thanks for the video, helping me a lot , with all those information,my problem is the dust start it weeks ago when I backup that noise stop for a while and come back how to job it Thanks again

Very informative thank you. The squeaking started first for like a week and then went away. Didnt think anything of it. 2 weeks later starting doing that grinding noise in the front of my car. Not sure if front wheel drive makes it wear down faster than rear but i think its def my pads. No wheel vibration just a nasty grinding noise from the front even when reversing turning the wheel.
I’d recommend paying little more and getting the ceramic brake pads they hold up longer don’t shed any brake dust at all can withstand hot heat and heavy braking and match them with a high performance rotor
The groaning sound occurring in the morning when first driving the vehicle could be due to the brakes being cold and possibly sticking slightly. As the brakes warm up and are used, the noise may diminish, which could explain why it disappears after driving for a short distance
Good video! Had a full brake job recently on my mustang and the right rear grinded quite a bit. I removed the pad added some grease and put the whole thing back together and voila no more scraping noises. Amazing what such little things can do. Now today after a long day of bumpy roads and hard driving the front left makes scraping noises at low speeds. I hope it's just the backing plate but if not I'll just repeat the process Ive done to the rear brake

Recently got my rotors resurfaced, new brakes, they squeak while driving, stop when I apply the brakes, and has a groove on the rotor ... any ideas ? Only one wheel, rear left
I got new pads and rotors and I get a slight grind sandpaper type of sound when in the brakes and going in reverse only. No vibrating grinding or noises when moving forward and on the brakes. Got about 500 miles on them and they still do this. Any advice?
My brakes are making a sloshing/squeaking sound. Not sure if it's definitely my brakes, but it happens when I break. I took it to the mechanic, and they said that theres no water trapped anywhere, and the brake pads and routers are new, so they aren't making the noise. They also said my suspension looks fine. Do you have any idea what that could be?
The front brakes on my jeep with lock up after I lifted it without putting longer brake lines on…. What happened? Was it stretches your brake line and pieces break off inside and then clog the line like a check valve holding pressure in the caliper. Learned a lot that day.!!
Top shelf video, thanks mate, learnt heaps. Cheers. Thanks for your explanation of the glazing effect so well. My Corolla does this constantly and I live in quite a 'hilly' area where I am often on the brakes as I am driving down the hill so I keep to the speed limit.
Lately i got new brake pads (ceramic, Wagner Quickstop ZD1522) and new rotors (Eurorotor 55215) installed on my Chevy Sonic, all was well for a while, until i discovered that, sometimes, when i brake, there's a high pitch squeaking noise (much more high pitched than the audio sample used here). Since it's still on warranty from the garage i got them installed at, i'll go back there to have that checked, because it's NOT normal for new brakes to do that, and i don't remember having this problem with the previous brakes and rotors. Another mechanic who did some work on my car previously, said that it's unlikely to be the calipers, but something with the pads and/or rotors. Maybe the brakes were not properly installed or something. As far as i know, the high pitch squeaking sound seem to happen mostly after i used the car for a while, when the brake pads and/or rotors seem to be warmer, after i braked with it for a couple of stops and traffic lights.
Those are tough to figure out, but often the high pitch ones are thin metal rubbing on the rotor. Needs visual inspection. Also sanding the pads down might temporarily fix it if it’s a glazing problem
Thanks mate the speaking got me today when not applying the brakes and went quiet when I press them so like you said this mean I need new brake pads, good tutorial learned alot thanks again
Hi I just got my brakes put in like five days ago and they are being with you already so they’re brand new and I don’t understand why but I’m gonna take it back to the shop
yah I think mines is squeaking because it does it when i press the brakes for a couple of seconds then goes away but then come back, why is that? because i got alot of break pad left and the rotor has a chunk of thickness. I'm assuming its probably the quality of the bad
My car falls under the squeaking category without a doubt. I have drilled and slotted rotors in the front and regular rotors in the back. Rear rotors are brand new with about 1-2 Thousand miles (pads replaced at the same time). The front drilled and slotted rotors are a little older with about 5-6 Thousand miles (In great condition still) with pads I just recently replaced while attempting to diagnose my squeaking issue (around 500 or so miles on the new front pads). I took it to a maintenance crew that works on tractors and farm trucks and they could not figure it out so I took it to a professional shop where they also could not figure out what was causing the squeaking. WHAT I KNOW - I've addressed all the common issues that cause squeaking with no result, They squeak the loudest when coming to stop, they squeak while driving without any use of the brakes however it dose not do this all the time, They do NOT squeak after washing my car but will after 5-10 minutes of driving, I did not hear a single squeak sound after removing, inspecting, and cleaning all four rotors (0 issues found on all brake equipment) but they began to squeak again the next day. I'm not a professional, nor even close to one, but the only think I could think of causing the problem is the large amount of rust buildup in my rear driver side wheel from the rotor and pads that I waited way too long to replace 4 months ago. Could that rust start to accumulate in the rotor after a certain amount of use and is causing the squeak? It seems unlikely but its the only thing I can think of that is causing the problem.
How about a howling sound? After you wash your car and start driving it, it makes a howling sound initially but disappears quickly. I get that same sound but when I reverse after the car sits for a while. It goes away after using the brakes and then going reverse doesn't make that sound anymore.
it helps a little but my grinding sound is a little bit different. When I press my brakes I only heard a somewhat girding sound when I'm completely stopped and I press the brake in more
I get like a squeaking noise after I slow down and let go off the brakes. I believe it is coming from the rear drum brakes. Any advice what it could be and why it wouldn’t happen when I brake but only when I ease of the brakes?
The brakes on my Mitsubishi RVR will squeak for the first few minutes of driving after a rainstorm. But then it stops. Also, the last two vehicles I've owned (Grand Caravan & RVR) both had a grinding noise for first few minutes of driving after sitting for a day or two. I'm in a humid area and I've always put this down to a build-up of rust on the rotors. Is this the wrong conclusion?
Videos like these are what young broke people who can’t afford college yet need bc one day a lot of them will go to college and then go work at Firestone or pep boys or Midas or hell even a pets store. People need this when they have a young mind so they can work with it young and start figuring everything out soon. Js it’s good for business.
I got fresh breaks about a yr ago but it only squeeks when im backing up or pulling forward into a parking spot. I literally be going like 1mph when i press on the break
I've got an issue I can't figure out that you may be able to help me on. I bought a used 2008 Prius. It had the original brake pads and shoes, rotors and drums. It would brake fine with no noise. I do thorough maintenance when I buy used cars because hardly anyone else does... and the vehicle is in dire need of maintenance. Anyhow, I bought new rotors and drums, pads, and shoes because the pads and shoes were down to almost nothing and I might as well swap out the rotors and drums if I'm going to get new pads/shoes. I installed everything (I've done this many times on many vehicles) without issues. Now the front right sounds like metal on metal and it's all new parts... a scraping/grinding noise. Most noticeable at low speeds around town when stopping. I pulled everything apart and inspected and I don't see anything that would cause the noise and there isn't excessive wear out of the ordinary. Put it back together... same thing. I don't get it. Maybe the type of pad? The part store had several pads that would fit... I chose semi-metallic. Any insights would be greatly helpful... because the noise is annoying. Great video btw.
i just replaced a new premium brake pads with re-surfaced rotor, when i press the brake,i hear the grinding noise on the brake, not the sharp noise, just the Dull noise seems gernerate by the rotor and the pads. do i have to change to new rotor or can be fixed?
Try this = match slotted-disc(slot hole size) to environmental dust-sand grain size = for auto-mechanical cleaning of brake pads = to reduce squeeks For beach and desert... ...
My front brakes make a sound like the rotors have METAL brake pads intead of ceramic pads. I have checkd them and nothing is wrong with them. They look brand new. They were installed like a year ago. I was told to replace the pads. Bad quality pads . any comment?
I’m having trouble with my front passenger. I have brand new brake sensors, pads, and rotors all around, yet I get a squeaking noise while driving, but it goes away with brake pressure. Anyone know anything please let me know! This is the only thing wrong with my car and it’s driving me insane
Same. Its driving me nuts while driving my ford taurus to calls. I just had everything replaced by the ford dealership. But time to take my car out of service to fix all four
My front brakes were changed a couple months ago (caliper, disc, pads) but I've got a squeaking issue when almost stopped. Is it glazing most likely. I haven't driven more than 5k miles and no hard braking.

Glad it helped!
I'm glad you know better now.. the dumbest drivers are the ones holding the brake going down the hill instead of slowing down before the hill.
I now feel like a mechanic, thanks for the awesome video :)
Mahalo, big island luv💪🏼
Well explained.. time to change my rotor
yah I think mines is squeaking because it does it when i press the brakes for a couple of seconds then goes away but then come back, why is that? because i got alot of break pad left and the rotor has a chunk of thickness. I'm assuming its probably the quality of the bad
You are official my bro
This guy is awesome now to fix my blinkers
I've experienced both... the first squeaky one I always ignore haha but this 2nd one just happened and I guess I gotta really change it now
Hi, my car have a rhythmic sound, friction. Any idea what would make this rhythmic sound?
I got fresh breaks about a yr ago but it only squeeks when im backing up or pulling forward into a parking spot. I literally be going like 1mph when i press on the break
Left a like for giving me confirmation it was my pads
Super helpful! Looks like I need new pads.
Yep my brakes and rotors needed replacement, I waited too long😢 that and I needed a new A/C compressor…that was not cheap😭
i just replaced a new premium brake pads with re-surfaced rotor, when i press the brake,i hear the grinding noise on the brake, not the sharp noise, just the Dull noise seems gernerate by the rotor and the pads. do i have to change to new rotor or can be fixed?
I just had that happened to my tuck it's not squeaking sound more of a grinding sound
Very simple explanation, and very good information. Thank u!
Try this
= match slotted-disc(slot hole size) to environmental dust-sand grain size
= for auto-mechanical cleaning of brake pads
= to reduce squeeks
For beach and desert...
This is the only thing wrong with my car and it’s driving me insane
prob need a caliper or the one you have is stuck
Same. Its driving me nuts while driving my ford taurus to calls. I just had everything replaced by the ford dealership. But time to take my car out of service to fix all four
Sir, you just won a subscriber
Thank you 🤙🏽
My front brakes were changed a couple months ago (caliper, disc, pads) but I've got a squeaking issue when almost stopped. Is it glazing most likely. I haven't driven more than 5k miles and no hard braking.
