      I don’t know why I’m just seeing this video now. Two years later, but I’m an expert when it comes to painting guitars. One thing that I can tell you, even though your guitar looks gorgeous!, Is that you went through way too much effort removing the paint. You don’t have to remove all of the paint. All you have to do is Sand down the clear coat that’s on the guitar enough so that you create a bond able surface, so the primer and the paint that you put over it will stick. That is why you had and issue with the wood grain.
      If it was a brand new body, he would’ve had to put either epoxy or a good wood sealer over the wood to keep the grain from coming through the primer or paint.

      @@TarynnElizabeth619 yeah if I were to do it again I would have definitely used sealer. Either way I didn’t need to go all the way down to bare wood, a mistake looking back for sure

    I think it came out looking really nice. You probably could have saved some materials by resprayed a sanding sealer after you got down to bare wood. It keeps the wood from soaking the finish. I painted a few guitars with that same clear and I usually get two or three bodies out of a quart. Adding the flake I'm sure also added to the need for more clear to bury the finish. I commend you on your courage to take on such a project on an expensive guitar.

    • @DallasStewartMusic
      @DallasStewartMusic  3 года назад

      If I did it over I certainly would have used a sealer, and yeah we checked after every layer of clear to see if we got enough coverage over the flake, took a lot of coats!

Do you think cans would have been fine for the entire project? Did you just use a gun because you wanted sparkle and needed to mix?

    • @DallasStewartMusic
      @DallasStewartMusic  2 года назад

      Spray gun opens the door up to so many more color and finish styles (like sparkle), but if you can find a color you like in a lacquer spray it should go on great! StewMac has a few color choice I think, might be worth checking out. Of course you could probably use any generic lacquer spray, not specifically ones made just for guitars like StewMac. Good luck!

That would have given you a smooth base, with the grain already covered. It came out great, but you could have saved yourself some work. I guess the answer is no. Lol
      Since it doesn’t look like a cheap squier at all.

    You wasted so much time and money removing the original paint. I wish more people that know how to paint guitars and wood products would speak up.

    Sir I understand you wanting to refinish but I would to see the look on Paul Smiths face. ! You ruined a great factory finish !!
