At a third of the cost new, it compares very favorably, but isn't a 100% replica. Which one sounds better to you?

Was it supposed to be a 100% replica? Cause if it were. Then its two same guitar with two different prices that were made in two separate countries.
I think the se plays and sounds better
I like how $900 is a budget guitar
derek hand - No shit. That's what i thought.
It's a budget version of the 2500 dollar USA version. Not very budget, but a hell of a lot cheaper than the USA
For PRS, that is budget. Unfortunately.
@@c3kile I think it’s probably worth $850 I just think it’s funny they call it budget
Inflation is a SOB.
Great comparison! You picked up on several design changes that I hadn't seen on other channels (rounded (rolled) fret board edges, the lower cutaway, strap buttons, tuner knobs for instance). LOVED that "wicka wicka" wah strumming effect with the funky rhythm at 17:34 - I'm going to incorporate that into my playing! Well done.
The case that came with the Fender John Mayer sig is absolutely awesome. Haven’t seen a semi rigid case so loaded with features.
It’s got high end padded backpack straps that unzip from a rear pocket. All the zip grips actually have an embossed JM silhouette from the heavier things album. Really useful pockets and slides on the inside. Straps it down well for transit.
It’s even got a big steel hook that folds out so you can hang it. Handy when travelling
One of the weirdest differences that I don’t think was mentioned, is where the ground wire is soldered into the trem’s spring plate. On the USA it’s soldered onto the actual middle spring hook so you can’t use the middle spring position if you wanted to (not sure why..?), but on the SE you have full access to all spring hooks because the ground wasn’t soldered to them.
I enjoyed seeing this comparison. I really love the PRS SE guitars in general, I think they're some of the best guitars in their price range for sure. I own a PRS SE Standard 24 and have played a few other models in store & I have nothing but good things to say about them overall. Just really solid, well made instruments. I'd love to see you review some more PRS guitars in the future.
What is funny, is how things come full circle. Poplar wood bodies are only used in budget lines today. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, poplar was one of the better choices for lightweight bodies in Charvel/Jackson guitars, Carvins, even the US made Fenders like the American Standard series!
Also Trog your playing has improved exponentially over the past cpl years. Really good tone demos here.
The Core sounds more glassy, but the SE still sounds great. I received my SE moon white yesterday and plugged it into my 57 Champ and was blown away. I was looking for an inexpensive gig guitar so I don’t have to take my custom shop Strat out everywhere. PRS nailed it with this guitar, I think it will be great for both the giging guitarist as well as a great step up for a newer player.
It's possible that adding the plate cover was cheaper than the additional work on the cavity to make it as smooth and even as the US
I was thinking that too, but 4 screw holes + 4 screws + backplate + labor... There's no way that's cheaper than programming the machine to route the body a little different. Right?
Great review! The most thorough I've seen and nice playing.
Just got mine yesterday. Same Moon color as yours. Love it!
For anyone looking at these two guitars, I really wanted the Core model but couldn't bring myself to spend that much when the SE looked like a solid choice. Well that was a two sided sword, because holy shit I love this SE, its is everything I thought it would be and more. The fret work is on par with my American Performer Strat, and the pickups are some of the best sounding I have ever heard on a Strat. As much as I love my SE I am now left wondering just how damn good the core model is lol.
Although i will not be getting the new SE, it is just nice to hear single coils on the show. Nice vid as always.
Ditto
I love when he does fenders bc you can tell he’s less familiar and he has to learn more.
@@jamesmarkham7489 Agreed.
I remember when Paul Reed Smith released his first line of factory guitars back in the mid 1980s. The PRS Custom was basically a Les Paul and a Stratocaster in the one instrument. And what fine instruments they were indeed. I recall playing a few back then but the snob in me stil preferred to see the words Fender or Gibson on the headstock. How silly was I. Wish I had purchased one. The fact that the current cheapie PRS guitars can compete with the Fenders is (sadly) more a commentary on modern Fender than PRS.
This is the BEST guitar channel! Top notch!
I was impressed with the electrics. Well done.
Trogley, your guitar playing has got so much better, great job brother!
Also I have both guitars and love them. Core still has my heart.
Best review I've seen on this. Thank you.
A really informative demo - I'm not interested in buying one of these but this did answer my questions about the differences between the two models. Your videos are always professionally presented and enjoyable.
Very in-depth well made video. I think these SE silver skies were not made to compete with the Squires but more to compete with higher quality brands like Sire, G&L, or the Mexican fenders.
The pickups sound remarkably alike. For a little bit more money you can get a Mexican Roadhouse strat, which are getting rave reviews. The whole world may be falling apart but we are truly living in the Golden age of guitars. 😁
I have a mex strat w/floyd rose really solid built i like it.
These are priced similarly to Player Series Fender. The SE line is not a budget line. It is a more budget-friendly version of a premium brand. I think it would be cool for PRS to get into the budget market, but not with PRS on the headstock.
@@jefft7085 No at $800+ it's not a budget guitar. This is for people who already want a Silver Sky but don't want to pay 2k.
That neck pickup sounded amazing!
I’ll wager the cost of making the back route pretty is more than the cost of covering it.
100%.
Nice job on the sound comparison.
I think the green version looks the best. The pickups sound nice.🎸
PRS says in a Q&A video that you can use USA Silver Sky tuners on the SE, and because of the trem I decided to do that and I can confirm it works perfectly with no modifications. Also, John Mann's Guitar Vault offers a modification service that will result in locking tuners for $60. The only issue is waiting for the tuners to come back.
Nice job. The USA version sounded MUCH sparklier and more detailed. The SE sounded dull in comparison. In this price range I would much prefer a Mexican Fender.
A Mexican Vintera, I agree - but I'm not a fan of the Mexican Player Strats in quality or tone.
Where I am the SE is cheaper than a player and Vintera. I still dk what I would prefer haha
I do not agree, the Se one sounds sparkly, the usa one sounds more gritty and gainy. Some might consider the usa a more "balanced" tone, i dont, i think the usa sounds more like high gain but not quite as bad as Fenders shitty horrible Elite series pickups, they suck. The SE pickups have more jangle almost like a tele.
I've tried it, the prs sounds dull compared to a real american strat.
Mayne but they mexican strats always seem to have issues. Not huge but fret work is nowhere near as good. The Mexican quality control is not the best. I'm talking about the ones at the same price point.
I'm thinking the SE version is more my liking, with the very slightly flatter radius - but the pickups are the real sellers of the model. (Overall, the criticisms of the Silver Sky are unfounded. It's a really nice USA S-Type with great pickups - just like a lot of other guitars that don't get criticized.)
Great video as always! Thx Austin!
The core prs strap buttons are bass stringtrees. They work really well.
I have the JM strat. I’ve been thinking about a silver sky for a while, thank you.
I always like when Trogly plays Wind Cry’s Mary..Glassy goodness ✌️
Another Great Video Trogly, Thank you!!!
Great review. Thanks!
your playing is getting better
Position four sounded heavenly!
Nice job on your review. I have 3 USA versions and recently checked out an SE. Pretty impressed with it.
3 USA versions? Lol
@@Rockandrollgeerage lunar ice, polar blue maple board, Roxy pink rosewood.
I don't know why exactly but that silver sky just really suits you Trogly. From what I've seen, you don't fancy yourself a S type guitar kind of guy, but you seemed like super comfortable with this one.
Sounded great but I preferred the usa versions pickups as well. Not so small difference between the two there
I know it would seem like cost savings to remove the backplate but, if you have to make sure that cavity is painted nicely then it actually would cause more work and end up more expensive than just putting the back plate on to cover the rougher work.
Those sound great! I epecially like the B+M on that first one.
I wanted one these, a gibson les paul or a high end epiphone les paul. I ended up getting a prs custom 2408 and it is becoming my favorite guitar.
Very nice review!!
Brilliant review, made my mind up,in that colour of the se, many thanks,👍
Glad you got to try it nice vid
Big hug from Portugal 🇵🇹
Wow love that real 'Cornish Ice Cream' colour ' ...side by side tone comparison are very close, so John Mayer PUs at a lower cost' great demo and documentation, Fusion Funk here we go'
Pretty good demo, they are both nice.
Good evening HK
@@sgt.grinch3299 And a good evening to you as well Sarge.
Happy Saturday
yeah baby!!! i’ve been waiting for this video
Been waiting for this
I ordered an SE SS from a major U.K. retailer half an hour after launch. A couple of days later I was told it would be May before delivery. I understand current production and supply issues but that time scale was a deal breaker. Cancelled the order and bought a G&L Tribute Comanche; I have no regrets.
If you want a PRS within a month have a quiet word woth the techie in London Fender shop... True.
You got the best color anyway. I think it would be interesting to compare this guitar with the Schaeffer nick johnston. The Schaeffer is a really great strategy for the money. The quality is outstanding.
What's a Schaeffer ? You mean Schecter ?
Wasn’t looking forward to this review but so happy you had both to compare. Nice job Austin!
I dig the Silver Sky and would probably like the flatter radius of the SE version better. I just wish the colors spoke to me more. Stone Blue looks okay, and at that price it’ll probably grow on me.
I'll probably get one but I know that eventually there will be a frost white SE with a maple neck and the inlayed nut. So I'm waiting.
@@timgermanyjr how do you know that ?
@@nassium66 Demand. You cant build 1000 dollar guitars and not at some point offer white black red blue etc.
in that se bag, there is a hook to hang your case up. the strap on the back near the headstock has a velcro pocket
Not often mentioned but a nice feature.
Another very nice video from Michigan
Makes me wonder if PRS is ever going to make a Tele style guitar now that they made a Strat style!?! Great video as always!! 🎸
Trogly's woot woot 🙌 👏
I thought of the yngwie malmsteen strat when I saw it. But that was just because of body color. Speaking of which, if you haven’t already, be interesting to see you review a scalloped fretboard.
He's never done a full scalloped that I know of but definitely has done an Ibanez Jem which is a partial scalloped guitar in the higher registered fret range. It's weird cause Yngwies models are deeply scalloped yet his real personal custom shops are scalloped very suttley in comparison. That be a review I'd watch always neat watching someone play a scalloped neck for the first time.
maybe not factory full scallop... but I've had this monstrosity
ruclips.net/video/umVE4WveU8Y/видео.html
Well Done!
Super vid! 👌
Very well done comparison. The SE's pickups sound a little brighter/hotter in this video. Would you say that's true in the room as well?
Hotter but darker. No sparkle.
Austin rocks!!
very Helpful . QUick question, I just bought an SE silver sky . I told the shop luthier to deck the bridge (cuz it was lifted a bit). However he hasn't aligned it the same which is shown in this video. As can be seen here , the bridge rests at the END part and is a little lifted at the "bridge bolt" (hence downward inclining) , What my guy did was Screw the BOLT all the way down and so mine's END part is just a tad bit lifted up. Are the two scenarios same in effect ?
Just got my SE today. So far so good.... but a dumb QC issue. The red wire for the jack was wrapped around inside the jack, and it was preventing the lead cord from from being inserted. It took me 30 sec to remove the jack and correct it. But it obviously had not been checked.
Austin's the kinda guy who complains about the used market prices on Reverb for these, while reselling his for $1300 ON HIS WEBSITE! At least the Reverb scalpers can always say the platform is getting a cut! C'mon, man, I know this is your job and I love your videos, but if you wanna pull this one off, at least don't mock the people doing no less than you.
Just saw it too, that’s insane price jump. Jeez
Mine also comes with a $200 hardcase. I'm not mocking - I was just shocked these were able to sell for premiums. I don't set the prices, I just follow the market. Mine is very competitively priced
@@Trog fair enough. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
My man troglys gotta make his money too haha
@@Trog you are selling the one PRS gave you for free?
Good sounding guitar and it gives the USA made one a run for its money. I don't know why you'd want a PRS with a Strat body when you could have the traditional looking PRS body but to each his own, (not knocking it). Why not just get a Strat then? Great review Austin! 👍
Guitar inflation has gotten so insane. I remember being able to buy a used American standard strat in high school for like $700. This was like 2002
Agreed my 1st "real" guitar was an entry level Gibson SG that literally was about $700 new in 2004. Now they run about $1000
Within the last 6 months I have bought an American Standard Strat for $700 and an American Standard Tele for $650.
I have two fade Gibsons, an SG Faded and a Les Paul double cut Faded which I paid under $400 each for in the 2000's. Now I cn make a nice profit but I don't want to sell them.
@@MyName-nx1jj Congratulations. You are awesome at life. As for the original post. Ahh yes, I think it was around that time when I picked up my first American Strat. Got it used, it was $700. Amazing guitar. Damn that was a good year. Around 2003. The prices seemed to have jumped a lot in the recent years. It’s not a great buyers market right now, that’s for sure.
@@tarantinoish will the prices ever go down? They always just seem to climb
New subscriber here, just found your channel recently. Good stuff! I can’t find the string spacing at the bridge listed anywhere for the SE. The USA version is an odd 2 9/64”…that’s just a bit over the modern strat style 2 1/8” bridge. I would really love to know what this is if you wouldn’t mind to measure it…I ask because I always use a brenner piezo saddle in my guitars and would like to know if these SE’s are a standard size…Thanks!
Trogly what overdrive/distortion pedals are you using during your dirty demos? It always sounds really nice and full
SE sounds great for the $ but USA sounds more "high fidelity". That is the best description I can come up with. It wasn't mentioned but the birds appear to be made of a cheaper material on the SE, perhaps real MOP as opposed to a man-made material.
You should start reviewing PRS guitars, your already an expert on high end Gibson guitars. Would love to see the insides of PRS, do they hold up to Gibson.
I do have a few videos on PRS ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=trogly+prs
this is a tuff decision for me. Im not sure if I should put in a little xtra and get a used USA ? Both seem like nice guitars. Thanks for doing the xtra work and comparing them for us Austin. I really appreciate it.
If you’re paying inflated used SE market prices - go for used USA. At pre-order retail value, go SE
I dig the DTT comparison video where Dylan compared it with a Mexican strat. The PRS is just far superior to the Fender (and i am a fender guy)
I'm surprised they didn't make pink an option. SE looks like it would be easy to switch to a floyd with that nut
Yes! A pink Floyd!
That's nice, I would def save the $$ and get the SE. 🤟😎
U can definitely hear sound difference. The US certainly sounds more high end. Quality expensive pickups. Crisper highs, Glassier. The SE version sounds a little fuller, little lower output, more subdued. But to be honest, I prefer that for the style of music I play. Then again there are plenty of pickups out there that I can get for half the price to achieve the same or damn near close to the sounds of BOTH of these sets !
JMS means you could get one in black and gold and have a John Mayer Special! If you get my reference...
JPS 😎
to me, the SE model seems more like a modern take on the S type guitar, whereas the USA silver sky is more akin to the vintage S type
I got in too late for the Epiphone Alex Lifeson Les Paul Standard Axcess. I pre ordered but they ran out before I got one. So I ended up with the Gibson Tribute Les Paul. Not the same, but still a nice guitar. This will be the same story I imagine. 6 months will go by and you'll get tired of waiting and buy something else.
um...woah the SE sounds better in my opinion...the distorted sounds was pretty good!
For the price these look to be a great buy.
this is wonderful content, I cannot turn it off. I was wondering if you could review the old Series 10 guitars. I had a few when I started playing in the late 80s. I had a white strat Series 10. And my brother has a Series 10 Bass right now. I always wondered about my white strat series 10 specs. and thank you.
Oooo good to see some more PRS on the channel! I've been looking for an unbiased side by side for a while too, I need an S style with a functional trem (my Ural's don't work lmao)
Greetings and well wishes from Utah!
In terms of noise, are the SE pickups quieter because of the shielding?
You should try out a hss sire strat copy Trogly!
They sound very similar it looks like it comes down to just playability.
Is the frett board hand rolled on the SE?
The funny thing is I prefer the USA but not for any reason other than that I love the dog tag truss rod cover.
As a silver sky owner I'm glad to see the strong variations. The silver sky second market is absurd, and as time passes there would be a large market for scammers. These are two very different guitars.
I'm so tempted to buy one..just to get a different feel. If you have 6 of the same, you'll still play the same.
I actually dont like the bird inlays, but the rest is nice and it sounds great.
Can you swap out the bridge for a USA version ?
I really prefer the truss rod cover of the USA version. But not enough to pay the difference in price.
I'm watching this at the bar
Have a drink for all of us, drive safe Neil.
@@hkguitar1984 ain't driving buddy I can be 20 beer deep and still think that will be stupid
@@neil2706 Fair enough Sir.
Trog I found my holy grail, a 1982 Gibson Firebird Natural, it doesn't have the red, white and blue bird so it's not the 76 centennial, but it is a 82 Firebird, and what I have researched this is a one off finish, um maybe
Been looking for one for a bit now, walked into my honey hole turned the corner and about went to my knees, and pictures don't do it justice
Hate the neck radius on the Silver Sky. I was hoping Paul would have gone in a modern direction for the SE line of a 10 or 12” radius.
Really impressed with the tones you were able to coax out of the SE. PRS did a good job bringing a more affordable version to the market.
Great rundown and review!
How about a Silver Sky double humbucker?!
This guitar sounds great! What amp and signal chain are you using?
He always goes straight into a Deluxe Reverb Reissue.
@@vdubbin thanks! For some reason it's not listed in the description gear list.
