Lived on St. John for 10 yrs, now split time between states and St. Thomas. This is a good overview of the beaches, but there’s so much more to see and do.
Some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world and excellent snorkeling, along with neat bars and restaurants, unique shops, beautiful hiking trails and a wealth of natural beauty bring travelers back year after year to St John.
Honeymooned there in 1990. We went camping at Maho Bay Resort,I think it was called that. Friends suggested filling a large plastic cooler with non- perishable food items to bring with us. We brought one along with our suitcases. We stayed in a canvas sided wooden Tree House. It had electricity and a propane portable cook stove. I fed a bird right out of my hand while on the deck. We dumped our bacon grease on the ground and watched the hermit crabs gobble it up. The beach was fantastic and incredible snorkeling. We saw sea turtles, sting rays, barracuda and many colorful fish. I'm sure it's not as pristine today as it was then, but being mostly a designated national park,it won't be over developed. The wild donkeys, deer and even peacocks were a treat to see. I'm sorry to hear about the hurricane damage.
As someone who has sailed the US and British VI since 1973 and been on RUclips right from the start (I remember being in Amsterdam in July of 2005 in a particular coffeeshop that had free computers and internet looking at RUclips) this is the first video of the East end of St. John, particularly Coral Bay, that I have seen. Thank you. BTW Hawksnest used to be very hard to get to, it used to be a beach you could take someone for privacy. Both places I have not spent time at really, despite living on STT 1981 to 1990. Oh, and Lam-Ah-Sure,
No one comes away from St John thinning raw. Chill. Classy. Quiet. That's St John. Raw is Alabama-no chill no class. St John's is vacation. Beaches. Drinks.. nature. Snorkeling. Family time.... Water. Sky. Sand trees.
Haven't taken the car barge in a while, it used to be $50. We did that for the first ten years or so that we vacationed on STJ. I do like that on St. John you can rent a smaller jeep, so much easier to park! So now we do the taxi to Crowne Bay and then the ferry from there. Surprised you didn't show the snorkeling at Maho - I have some great turtle videos from there last year, also a few sharks and stingrays. We saw a spotted Eagle Ray at Salt Pond Bay. Thanks for this video - heading over in a month!
My wife and I want to thank you for this amazing video. It is very well thought out, composed and your personality tops it off nicely. We're in our late 70's and we're planning on a trip. You made this decision so easy and relaxing to view. Thank you.
thanks for this video! lived on St John 13 years (1997-2011) and on Maho Bay for about 5 of those years. There was an old mobile home where the parking lot is now. Went back once in 2018. Probably won't ever go again, sadly
Thank you for THIS video and the other ones you have created. I have been to St. John 2x BOTH before the big Hurricane. I stayed with my family at Caneel Bay. It was one of the best Caribbean resorts I have ever been to. I was truly saddened when it was damaged beyond repair. Is there talks of another resort being built there?
My wife and I stayed at Gallows Point for our honeymoon. We had a great time and loved the trip. A little difficult getting normal time dinner reservations so make sure you book well in advance.
Last weekend we went to St John, Lazarus and Kusu Islands in Singapore. There are no places to buy food so you can carry your own food. For your vacation, you can visit these amazing islands and spend the whole day also can do sea bathing, barbequing and reading a book while taking a long breath of nature. These islands are immaculate and beautiful. So please bring your trash back home or put it in dustbins only. You have to go to Marina South Pier to take the Ferry (There are 2 Ferry services) Ticket for Ferrie - 10$ pp as of 31/12/2022 MRT - Red Line (Marina South Pier)
You can’t do St. John justice with these videos. It’s an incredible place. Going back again soon! It’s St. John, USVI. Not St. John’s. Two different islands.
Dude! You went when it was overcast and you weren’t able to appreciate the sealife. I’ve been on island a dozen times and I love it!!! But your video cheated 😢 ppl out of so much of its beauty. I hope you’re able to go back spend a week and really enjoy it.
Just returned from St.John. It was much different than shown. Many streets in town are under construction, and down to one lane. All the beaches were very crowded, parking at a premium or not available. Food is mediocre and expensive.Wine prices are double there.Fishing and snorkeling are very good.Vehicle rental prices are about $100.00 per day and gas is over $4.50 a gallon.
We just found your videos, my husband and I are planning a trip to St Thomas, St John and St Croix and we found your videos to be very helpful, great work, looking forward to seeing your other ones, be blessed😊
That old plantation I'm guessing, doesn't have a house. I didn't see one in the video. I heard that on St. John, when the slaves revolted, they killed all the landowners. Some landowners did get away in St. Croix. The story is kinda you know, IDk. Anyways, there's no house on that mountain top. Cuz the slaves burnt it to the ground. I only lived in the USVI for a few years, I'm certainly not indigenous. Probably, if you asked a historian, you could definitely get the real scoop. My favorite plantation ground is on a mountain top in St. Croix. The main house is still there, along with many of the out buildings. A dungeon, a lot of the factory is still standing. The dungeon has a bat cave, and the smoke stack has bats in it, too. Awesome place to explore. For the average tourist, you'd have to find a state employee or a state park ranger. But I was living there, both times I was there 3 to 4 months at a time. ??? It's a drug and alcohol rehab. The only other I think is in Anguilla, but it's expensive. I absolutely LOVED!! to dig for relics in the dirt there, loved it.
Here now for 3rd trip in this past year! Love St John!! It's very rustic with lots of hiking & snorkling. Some of my favorite hike and snorkle location (depending on wind direction that day) is: 1)Hike to Ram Head early morning, stop by Salt Pond Bay Beach on the way to Ram Head and claim a picnic table in the shade, then hike to the end of the trail for a beautiful cliff view then back to snorkel in Salt Pond Bay out to the rock formation in the middle. Also, a short hike off of the trail is Drunk Bay where people make rock formation/rock art. 2)Waterlemon Cay!! Park at Annaberg windmill ruin and walk across the street to the entry of the hike to Leinster Bay off to the right. Walk around the bay and swim across to Waterlemon Cay. Current can be a little strong but beautiful fish out there. There is a small trail at the beach area that goes up to a pretty ruin that overlooks the bay. On way back to your car swim right there as you reach the entry point and off to the left called Mary's Creek....beautiful sea fans and lots of fish. 3)Cinnamon Bay Beach. We park at Cinnamon and walk across the street to the ruins then hike up the trail. Take the short spur trail off of it to American Hill where there is a beautiful ruin overlook and then back down and you can hang out on Cinnamon all day and snorkel off to the right along the rocky shore. One of the prettiest and has restroom/shower facilities until 4pm 4)Reef Bay Trail down to the petroglyphs/old Rum Factory on the beach. BEAUTIFUL ruin and a hike in the shade. Quite an incline back up the trail to the road, but take it slow and bring water. 5)Mangrove snorkeling @ Princess Bay. Right now the water is pretty churned up but this was the one spot protected (I guess from the wind/rain wash) that was clear this trip. It was AMAZING!!
@@allisonthompson2767 thanks, we actually went in December. It was amazing. My daughter had done alot of those hikes when I couldn't because my back went out😭. I did hike up peace hill, for it was short. We also went to eat at wok on the beach in annaberg? Don't believe I spelt that right. Any way the food is 1 of the best I ate in st John or st Thomas. So, you have to try it! Have fun
How did that full face mask work out? Would you recommend buying one prior? What size brand model was your backpack? Noticed you had on long sleeve shirts. Would you recommend bringing them? How about any rain gear? How was traffic and driving on the left? Planning for our trip in November. Thx
I am so sadden to hear that Cannel Bay resort is damaged and may not reopen. I spent a wonderful vacation at Cannel Bay several years ago. Wonderful memories.
When were you there? It must of been at the height of hurricane season because it is super dead... Just left in the spring and as a 21 year resident it had become too crowded... couldn't find a spot on Maho to put your beach chair! You really lucked out.
The "deserted beach" is actually how you get to a natural marine nursery your can swim or wade over and find juvenile animals from puffer fish to nurse and reef sharks
One thing that sucks about taking video of driving around St. John, for some reason the camera just can’t translate how crazy steep some of the roads are and the crazy hairpin turns. We’ve visited there twice around July 4th and love it.
The video was very informative and well done. However, after several trips to Hawaii from California years ago, I find the USVI to be scrubby and uninviting despite some lovely beaches. Florida has a lot to offer. For people who haven't seen what Florida has to offer, I would say consider a Florida vacation on Anna Maria Island or Anastasia Island before doing the USVI.
I’m planning on going to St. John’s for 4 nights this year, is Late April/ Early may a good time to go? In terms of weather and ocean temperatures. If not, when’s the best time?
We are visiting next week, in May, and I’m concerned about rain forecasted. It says it will rain the entire week, is that common for the islands in May?

Beautiful island, but the snorkeling??? So sad! Where are all the fish?? I was there in the 70’s. There were so many fish 🐠 when snorkeling at St. John’s you could barely see your hand in front of your face. The coral was alive and colorful then. Cruise ship 🚢 industry pollution, climate change??
