24 year resident ov the USVI, my simple recommendation is to go to BOTH islands. You can split into two different stays (i.e.. nights on one island, 4 on the other) or base yourself on one and visit the other for day trips. The people ferry (as opposed to car ferry) travels from Red Hook on the east end of St. Thomas to/from St. John every hour from early morning to late evening, so if staying on St. Thomas, you can go spend a nice day on St. John, hitting a beautiful beach via a short taxi or even a 30 minute walk to Honeymoon or Solomon Beach from Cruz Bay, then have dinner at any one of several good restaurants in Love City (aka Cruz Bay) and then return on an evening ferry to Red Hook for an extended bar hop or just back to your hotel. Taking a rental car to St. John via the ferry is less than ideal IMHO as it is expensive, parking in Cruz Bay is limited and you have to return much earlier than the people ferry. Cheers!

Really enjoyed this video, looking to travel to both soon with two 15 year olds in tow.. so i think Saint john to stay and enjoy nature and st thomas to see more of the sightseeing is a good plan. Great job with this video! ❤
Hey thanks. That's what we would do whenever we plan on returning. Make sure y'all make it out to some of the snorkeling out on St John. That makes it all worth it.

Makes a world of difference doesn't it? I used to struggle grading my raw footage until I found these luts. Makes the process so much easier and quicker. I also add just a tad bit of sharpness and contrast because S Log 3 takes out the sharpness, and I crank the saturation a little more than what I think looks good because RUclips's compression seems to make videos look more flat

We do have separate videos on things to do in both St Thomas and St John on our channel. I believe they are linked in the description of this video. I will say if you can swing it, St John is the way to go for a wedding location. Right on one of the beaches. Won't be as crowded as St Thomas. Secret Harbor in St Thomas also has a hotel there that looks like they host weddings
Thanks. I'm sure it's amazing there in the summer. Our goal was to avoid some of the cruise lines. Does it get really crowded during the summer, or does that St. John vibe stay the same?
@@TheDetourDuo St. George Village Botanical Gardens. For restaurants, try Rum Runners on the Christiansted boardwalk. I also hear good things about La Reine Chicken Shack, though I’ve never tried them.
Me & hubby going next month for our anniversary. We’re introverts (not on purpose) so we want to settle in St John like hotel but do want to explore St Thomas too. We don’t want to rent a car just to have the relaxation of no driving and being chaperoned around lol. Our goal is just to have a great time for our anniversary. Thanks for the video!
Have fun. We're the same way (even though we're probably comfortable enough on camera now to not seem like it.) You'll love St John as an introvert! and if you're spending most of your time there you'll be okay without renting. Don't remember much of a taxi service on the island, but they do have bus stops. St Thomas has taxis. Once you take the ferry over, taxi vans sit outside the red hook shopping area.
It's tough because they all offer a different travel experience despite being so close. I guess it comes down to what you're looking for. Are you looking for a more relaxing vacation, or one full of activities and new experiences? I feel like St Croix is a mix between St John and St Thomas. It's bigger, yet still slower paced. Some say St Croix might have the best snorkeling/diving
So my partner and I just decided to make St. Thomas our first bae cation we’re actually celebrating her birthday. Great video, awesome content and great suggestions. I do have to ask…how did you guys go about purchasing cheap airline tickets?
Wow that's some number. We didn't spend enough time on St John to really give the food a decent rating but it was 2/3 for us there. The first place we went to was meh, but skinny legs and miss Lucy's were very good.
St Thomas’s - party , excursions, shopping At John’s - peace, tranquillity , diving, don’t go alone or you will be board St croix - has everything You guys have to check out st croix!
@@TheDetourDuo sugestions!! Have to eat at the rein chicken shack, do atv tour in fredrickstead- hike the tide pools in annaly bay/ carambola… driving is easy. Highly recommend renting a car. As well.. drive to point UDALL- views are totally spectacular and it’s free…. Probably the only island in the Caribbean that has both desert and jungle… enjoy!!!
Solid video, thanks for the tips about carrying cash! We’re taking our first trip there soon and will be spending a day on STT and the rest on STJ (will have to ferry back to STT for the flight home though) Do you think it’s doable without a car? We booked only a few months in advance and its looking like a rental might not happen since its so short notice. From what I hear it sounds like taxi’s / busses could work for us if we mix that with the occasional hike
Glad it was helpful! It is doable without a car if you stay on STJ. I don't recall seeing many taxi, but there is a bus that runs (no idea what it's schedule is though). Try contacting the company we went through. We recommend them, although last min might be a little heavier on the cost. It's called Dexter's Car Rental. We were able to book a jeep a week before our departure.

St. John around July 4th is the best. We did it in 2019 and 2023. I love driving on that island too. You’ll be doing 30 and it feels like 60 at times. Cinnamon Bay has Octopus and Hawks nest had a nice reef with lotta of different sea life. Salt Pond also has several schools of squid.

And if you’re there for the 4th you can watch the fireworks from deck like we did
We are taking our first trip to St. Thomas next week and we are planning a day to go to St. John! Can you tell me where it was that you were hiking in St. John to the top of what looks like a hill or a mountain to oversee everything? Was that at trunk bay? your videos have helped me so much to plan our trip!
Maho Bay beach. If you navigate your way to the beach, you can't miss the stand. You'll likely come from the road that leads past Trunk Bay it will be on the right. But Trunk Bay also has rentals if you don't want to make the drive to Maho Bay
@@madpanthers53 honestly not sure. We rented a car during our stay. We did see cruisers on the beach so I'm sure there is some sort of set up. Otherwise, my understanding is the bus goes around the entire island but it doesn't get from place to place very quickly
Nice video guys! I'm planning on flying into Thomas and directly going to St John for 2-3 days. I do have some questions I would greatly appreciate if you can answer. For John, we will likely want to explore most of it if possible. Is gas going to be a concern once we rent a car, are the gas stations mainly at Cruz Bay? Once we are done with John, we would like to spend about 3 days at Thomas exploring. Is it easy to travel on Thomas without a rental car, are taxi/local transport rates high? I would prefer not to have a car on Thomas due to the more hectic nature there, but if need be we can.
Thanks so much! I don’t think gas will be a concern. We spent 7 days between St Thomas and St John and only needed to refill the Jeep once (not including topping it off before returning). We only used the car for transportation and we drove A LOT so you should be fine! It looked to be pretty easy getting around to the popular spots via the taxis on St Thomas. Since we had our rental car, we actually didn’t use any of the taxis but they were everywhere and dropped off at popular spots like Magen’s Bay, Mountain Top, etc.
It is but you'd probably have to dedicate at least half the day to the adventure. There were cruisers on St John when we were there. Essentially you'd have to hop on the passenger ferry from Charlotte Amalie and then there should be taxis in cruz bay to take you wherever. Trunk Bay is your closest beach in the park. Just either get the taxi phone number or card so they can pick you up in time to get you back
Beautiful! However, you did not mention how the driving is on the left side of road. Unlike, the rest of mainland states and territories where driving on right side of road. The U.S. ships cars to islands so the steering wheel stays on left but you also drive on left.
I’ve been to St. Thomas, but never St. John. I just started watching your videos and this is the second one. Is it easy to get around on St. John like if you don’t have a rental by using public taxis ?
Thanks! Tough to say as we had a rental but from the looks of it taxis hang out by the ferry terminal and they usually hand out a card or # to call their service so when you need a pick up it shouldn't be much of a problem. We also noticed a bus/shuttle that runs the island but it was hard to tell where the pick up points were or even if it ran on a set schedule. Just give yourself plenty of time to get back before the last ferry leaves the island
Great video! Traveling to STT this week and will have a rental car. If we go to STJ without the rental car, how can we get to Trunk Bay and Malo Bay? Thanks in advance
All great questions. If you're going to stay on St John, then it's better to just rent there so you won't have to pay the extra $65 per roundtrip for the car ferry as often. If you're staying on St Thomas and making multiple trips to St John, then rent on St Thomas. Just be aware that some of the car rental agencies don't like it when you take their vehicle on the car ferry. The rental company we used, and would 100% recommend, is called "Dexter's Car Rental". Very accommodating, and super friendly. Read quite a few horror stories about other agencies, but every review about Dexter's sings their praises for good reason. You don't need a jeep, but you definitely want a vehicle that is 4x4. Everyone wants to rent a jeep so they tend to hike the prices on them, and they get rented out quickly. If the aesthetic is not something you care about, save some money and get something a little cheaper with 4x4. You might be able to get away with not having 4x4 on St John because it's more paved and less of an uphill drive everywhere, but I still recommend 4x4. Also, it's nearly impossible to drive on St Thomas without it. If you do rent on St John though, all the car rental services we found are exclusively jeep rentals.
I just have a question of cannabis , I am going to st Thomas for my birthday next months and was wondering should I bring my own cannabis would I be searched when I land ? Or am I better off finding some out on the island
It wasn't super dangerous or anything but you do have to be a confident driver. You basically drive up and down a mountain to get anywhere and the locals don't follow the speed limit so they can fly around corners.
It's definitely deep into hurricane season so you have to factor that in. On one hand, it's probably the cheapest flight deals you can find. Accommodations will probably been cheaper too. On the other hand, some businesses, excursions, etc might shut down in preparation for storms, or simply because there isn't enough tourism flowing through to stay open during the season. We went in Jan. Found cheap flight deals, weather was nice and there weren't many cruise ships pulling in yet so it wasn't crowded. I'd say around then, Dec-Feb is the best time to visit
There were cruisers on the island when we were there. Not sure the logistics of it though. My guess is they took the passenger ferry over to the island and grabbed a taxi. I'd probably be sure to grab the taxi phone number, or card, and schedule them to pick you up to take you back to the ferry. Aren't many taxi on either island and they tend to stay in just a few places
So your video gets 2/3s of a thumbs up from me. In order to get a full thumbs up you’ll Have to include St. Croix. When speaking of the Virgin Islands you simply can’t leave it out as though it’s not part of the Virgin Islands.😁
There are none for US citizens. Just the same precautions as there are on the mainland. Don't visit if you feel sick. That sort of stuff. We traveled with our vaccination card just in case, but we were never asked about it
@@chauncee12 Thanks! we really appreciate that. You don't have much to worry about since it's a US territory. It's basically like flying to a different, or rather more comparable to flying to the state of Hawaii. You don't even need a passport
Sorry, we aren't much of night life folks anymore so I can't give you good information. I can tell you without a doubt St Thomas is more lively so nightlife there is likely to be a lot better.
Best night club just shut down, mostly just bars but they usually have live music on busy nights. The islands always offer some sort of trouble to get into

Nice video guys! I loved it! 🫶🖤😎
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you!
Leaving soon and staying on St john in an ecotent. Can't wait!

@TheDetourDuo St Croix was love when I visited. You’ll love it too I’m sure!
I love your video and can’t wait to see more.
thank you!!!
We went to both islands and we agree St John has better beaches and has a more chill vibe. We didn’t have our RUclips channel yet so that means we have to go back and do it all again 😂
You sure do! Not a bad trip to do over lol
Thanks for the heads up on Beach entry fees… Will go somewhere else where the beach is free. ❤
You bet! I want to say they all cost except Secret Harbor unless you go to St John. The only one that costs money for us there is Truck Bay. I could be wrong on that though
Great Video. Been to St Thomas twice but have yet to get to St. John. I really want to do it next time we go. Love all the special effects too.
You should! Well worth a visit even for just a day trip!
thank you guys! looks lovely, I can't wait to go in a few weeks! ❤
Hope you enjoy it!
I loved both islands but st. John was the hit!
Agreed!

Wow great video I can’t believe they packed so much into 8mins! Bravo
Thanks for watching! It was a lot huh
Stayed on St Thomas last yr off season. The best! No one was there. St John beaches are unbelievable. Trunk bay is spectacular. No wonder Chesney lives there!
Same situation we had. There was maybe one cruise ship in port so when we made it to St. John we practically explored the entire Island with there not being a lot of people there.
Cool video!!!! thank you for the information, looks like an amazing place.
It is! Thanks for watching
Hi guys we went there back in 2004 and still look beautiful as i remember then also boss thank you for the info on the phantom lut i started to use them and doing the s log 3 gumut3 icy blue and wow i noticed the difference already my next on is the jamaica lut thank again and beautiful and well put together i may have to take more note from you sir!✊🏽🙌🏼🙏🏼
Makes a world of difference doesn't it? I used to struggle grading my raw footage until I found these luts. Makes the process so much easier and quicker. I also add just a tad bit of sharpness and contrast because S Log 3 takes out the sharpness, and I crank the saturation a little more than what I think looks good because RUclips's compression seems to make videos look more flat

this is such a great video guys! any recommendations for wedding planning? locations? things to do?
Thank you! We were only visitors ourselves so can't really give you good information on wedding locations or anything.
Hi. I loved your video. I am a Realtor for STT & STJ. May I post this video on my website?
Excellent video and great comparison! See you later! St. John, VI is never boring! Summer is even nicer!!!
Thanks. I'm sure it's amazing there in the summer. Our goal was to avoid some of the cruise lines. Does it get really crowded during the summer, or does that St. John vibe stay the same?
Please do a video tour of St. Croix too.
do you have recommendations or requests for things we should film?

Great info and video. You guys are so relatable and down to earth. Thanks for helping me plan my upcoming trip.
Thanks for watching! Hope you have a blast. When are you traveling there?
Coki beach in STT! Hands down best beach
We had a good time at that beach
I live on St Thomas. St John is nice when you want some peace.
We thought the same thing
This was so helpful. I’m trying to decide between St Thomas and St Croix 6:51

We agree! One of the reasons why we loved St John
I just left this weekend I have to say st john has the best local food. Hillside terrace is 20/10 lol
Wow that's some number. We didn't spend enough time on St John to really give the food a decent rating but it was 2/3 for us there. The first place we went to was meh, but skinny legs and miss Lucy's were very good.

Solid video, thanks for the tips about carrying cash! We’re taking our first trip there soon and will be spending a day on STT and the rest on STJ (will have to ferry back to STT for the flight home though)
Do you think it’s doable without a car?

We got to make it back in July!
@@TheDetourDuo if you ever plan to go back and have a group of 4-8 people check out the place we’ve stayed at Villa Alessandra run by Carefree Getaways. The main house sleeps 2 couples and the guest house can hold another 4. It has an amazing view of chocolate hole and St. Thomas. Which beach did you show around 3:00 with the scuba rentals on the beach? Looking for a beach in St. John with this. Thank you
Maho Bay beach. If you navigate your way to the beach, you can't miss the stand. You'll likely come from the road that leads past Trunk Bay it will be on the right. But Trunk Bay also has rentals if you don't want to make the drive to Maho Bay
Are taxis easy to get back to the ferry from both beaches? only have 4 hours on the island@@TheDetourDuo
@@madpanthers53 honestly not sure. We rented a car during our stay. We did see cruisers on the beach so I'm sure there is some sort of set up. Otherwise, my understanding is the bus goes around the entire island but it doesn't get from place to place very quickly

Good place to get stranded at least. Those ferry operators don't play when it comes to time. Lol
I use to live on St John coral bay.
Oh, very cool!
So for someone that’s trying to hit all national parks but is also fond of cruising… is it possible to do st John’s if you’re visiting by ship.
Just either get the taxi phone number or card so they can pick you up in time to get you back
@@TheDetourDuo thanks for the heads up. I’m trying to make plans to reach all national parks. By the end of next year we’ll be at 4/63
Hi! Great video! Which airport do you fly into for St. Johns?
We flew into St Thomas. Only way to get to St John is by boat/ferry to my knowledge
You should try the British
It's in the future plans!
St Thomas cus my friend lives there
Oh nice! Wouldn't mind living there. Hurricane season gives me concern though
Beautiful! However, you did not mention how the driving is on the left side of road. Unlike, the rest of mainland states and territories where driving on right side of road. The U.S. ships cars to islands so the steering wheel stays on left but you also drive on left.
Good point! I thought we did mention it, but that may have been in the video we made specifically on our time St Thomas
Have fun. They have taxis that wait outside the ferry station. Just make sure you take a card or number to call them to get back
What is the car rental situation like on St. John? Is it better to rent on St. Thomas and ferry over? Do you need a Jeep/4x4 on St. John? Thanks!
If you do rent on St John though, all the car rental services we found are exclusively jeep rentals.

....which island had the Barber that cut that??? Just kidding....great vid.
🤷🏾♂️ thanks
was it safe n easy to drive around in st thomas?
It wasn't super dangerous or anything but you do have to be a confident driver. You basically drive up and down a mountain to get anywhere and the locals don't follow the speed limit so they can fly around corners.
i like st croix gonna be buying real estate there
We gonna make a trip there next. Hearing a lot of good about St Croix
I’m considering going for my 21st birthday which is Oct 9th, but I’ve seen that it’s hurricane season. Does anyone have any advice or insight?
It's definitely deep into hurricane season so you have to factor that in. On one hand, it's probably the cheapest flight deals you can find. Accommodations will probably been cheaper too. On the other hand, some businesses, excursions, etc might shut down in preparation for storms, or simply because there isn't enough tourism flowing through to stay open during the season. We went in Jan. Found cheap flight deals, weather was nice and there weren't many cruise ships pulling in yet so it wasn't crowded. I'd say around then, Dec-Feb is the best time to visit
Happy birthday from St. Thomas!
@@RickySTT thank you!!!
We will have our toddler with us when we get off the cruise ship. Is an excursion to St. John’s doable? I’d like to go to Trunk bay.

What about the night life?
Sorry, we aren't much of night life folks anymore so I can't give you good information. I can tell you without a doubt St Thomas is more lively so nightlife there is likely to be a lot better.
Best night club just shut down, mostly just bars but they usually have live music on busy nights. The islands always offer some sort of trouble to get into
