  • There are many grafts available for you to chose from for your ACL surgery. You must be part of this decision. Cadaver grafts can have high failure rates in certain groups. Your own tissue often remains the best choice in the long run.

    Its nice to find these informative videos. I have a question, if you have used up patella tendon graft like i had for my first surgery at 26 yo and at 34 i have been advised and installed cadaveric allograft, any comments about this re current options/route when one of the better grafts is used up.

    I am 52 years old, but a pretty avid downhill skier. That is how I tore my ACL 3 months ago. As a young person, I skied bumps competitively, but "old' now. I am scheduled for reconstructive surgery. My dr. is recommending allograph. Is that a good choice for me? I am not young, but I enjoy playing backyard basket ball, swinging the bat for baseball, and of course, skiing! Have things improved for allographs in the past 5 years since this video was posted?

    I’m 16 and I’m having my first acl reconstruction on Halloween. I was told to decide which out of my patellar tendon and my hamstring would be best of fit for me. Which would you recommend more than the other/ which do you prefer?
    I play high school soccer and softball. Also if I used my patellar tendon would I experience knee pain or is that just depending on my individual healing with the amount of time I could spend on my knee during soccer and/ or softball after months of PT after surgery?

    • @HowardLuksMD
      @HowardLuksMD  5 лет назад

      HI Maggie ... There are risks and benefits to both hamstring and patella tendon grafts. The incidence of knee pain is not high after a patella tendon graft. In women there is a significant risk of hamstring weakness. Keep talking with your surgeons until you are happy with your decision.

    • @maggieporch2862

      Howard Luks I ended up choosing to use my Patellar Tendon because I thought after everything I had read it just seemed better in my opinion because of the risk of smaller Hamstrings in females.

    I tore my ACL when I was 21 years old while playing soccer, we went with the patellar tendon graft. Unfortunately for me I tore the same ACL a year after the surgery while playing soccer once again. I am now 26 years old and I have not gotten my second ACL because I feel like it would fail again. I know I need the surgery as my knee feels super weak. I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to do put I wish I could return to being able to play without worrying about my knee, any advice?

    This is interesting. I recently had my ACL replaced, and my doctor said despite it being foreign tissue, he highly recommended using a cadaver graft, and also stripping my hamstrings to fuse the two together, in a way, to form a stronger graft. I haven't had any issues, however given this conversation I found my surgeon's method very interesting, anyone with any feedback or answers would be appreciated, I am a pre-med student who wants to learn.

      The reasons for cadaver is it will be easy to do it but the problem the risk contracting a disease, there's always a risk for acl reconstruction

    • @amineaiffa
      @amineaiffa Год назад

      You would typically use an allograft for a person who has hypermobile joints or who has small tendons. There either isn't enough tissue to harvest for the allograft or the quality of tissue won't be stiff enough to function as a good acl.

    my doc told me that I have a torn ACL and PCL from an accident. If I will go a surgery to reconstruct it what graft is better choice for me I am in my early 40s.

      Actually ... young children are at very high risk for a second ACL tear. Therefore I recommend waiting 10-12 months minimum. too many kids going back way too early. We need better standardized tests to determine when an athlete is ready.

    What kind of silly outro was that guys? "If we're contemplating which to use we probably shouldn't be having an ACL Knee Reconstruction in the first place??" That's absolutely ridiculous!
    I'm:
    - 38 y.o
    - Already had a Patella Knee Reconstruction when I was 18 on my right knee
    - Just did my Left ACL snowboading
    - I ride "Natural Stance" with my left knee facing downhill
    - When I ride downhill (snowboarding) your hamstrings get a pretty damn good workout (so I'm considering how a hamstring graft would affect this)
    - My Left knee is downhill (natural stance) so I'm considering if I'll have Patella issues due to the impact your lead leg takes when going downhill on a snowboard
    - I also play basketball & have found the Patella ACL to be VERY beneficial
    - I have trouble kneeling on my right knee due to previous Patella ACL graft & contemplating whether I want to have that same trouble in both knees
    - I practice Martial Arts & check kicks (shin bone blocking other persons shin bone), this can be problematic when having a screw in the front of your knee due to Patella Graft
    - I practice Martial Arts & throw high kicks & stretch very regularly so considering how a tendon gone in my hamstring will affect this
    ... I'm 38-years old, will DEFINITELY have a knee reconstruction as I have plenty of activity left in me & hearing statements like "I shouldn't be having an ACL Knee reconstruction" makes you both look like complete RANK AMATEURS... Open your minds... I'd ask your opinion but I sense my personal judgement will be much more valuable than your opinion... Wake up!

      Apologize my rudeness, but if you have 40-years of combined experience, I searched the Internet for help and was expecting more... And genuinely looking for the best option available... Telling me I shouldn't be having an ACL Knee Reconstruction is a very closed minded conclusion, there's pro's & cons in everything you choose... If you want to voice your opinion, go ahead, I'm listening...

    • @HowardLuksMD
      @HowardLuksMD  5 лет назад +3

      I'm sorry... that wasn't what we said :-) What we said was that if a surgeon was not comfortable with all types of graft harvest that they probably shouldn't be doing ACL reconstructions. We didn't tell people not to have a reconstruction :-) !!
      Cheers ! And we re very happy to hear of your successes after returning from ACL surgery.
