I was diagnosed by the emergency Room with a grade 3AC separation. I had AMRI done, the results revealed that both of my AC ligaments were ruptured. I have partial damage to buy trapezoid ligament. Also extensive edema in the AC Joint. How do I proceed
Orthopaedic version of Arnold Schwarzenegger!! Bumped into this video searching for AC Separations since I currently have Grade II Injury (direct fall on twisted shoulder during an MMA session). Nice Explanation.
Thankyou for that amazing explanation, two questions that I had was: 1. How is the treatment for a type 3 unstable ac separation different from a type 3 stable ac separation? 2. Does the ac joint go back to how it was originally in such injuries or do the muscles compensate to give stability to that joint, in that case will it cause problems in the long term?
I clearly have a type 2 or 3, with a bump at top of shoulder, there is some pain pushing down on the bump, but my shoulder function properly with no pain
A week ago, I fell on my head and shoulder during basketball, and dislocated my right collarbone. When I got up, my collarbone was sticking out almost comically, so I would say that was clearly a grade 5. However, later that evening I managed to position my body in a way that made the bone settle down, and look more like a 3, and it has been like that since. Does it make sense for an AC separation to "downgrade" from a 5 to a 3 by itself, or am I still looking at a 5 that "mimics" to be a 3? I know the doctor can't answer medical questions like that here, so perhaps other commenters have thoughts on this. In any event, I've been considering surgery, but if it is indeed more of a grade 3, I think I'll let it heal by itself and hope that works out the best. Narcosis and the (small) chance of complications are not things I'm willing to accept unless necessary.
Thanks for the great explanation. I separated my shoulder abut 18 months ago and it has not healed. There is still a big bump in certain positions. I have regained maybe 80% strength and most of the pain is gone. My local orthopaedic surgeon said they cannot make it any better. I am using KT tape to help stabilize the joint for everyday activities and that seems to help, but is not enough for heavy weights or gymnastics. Do you have any recommendations?
I’ve been to 3 doctors. One said it was a grade 3 and I will be fine. The other one said it is a grade 5 and he said it’s my choice to get surgery. The third doc also says it’s a grade 5 and I will need surgery. I play football and I don’t know what the best course of action is for next season.
Doctor, thanks for discussing the stable versus unstable grade 3 AC separation. Complication rates appear high (30% or more) for grade 3 AC reconstruction, using the common surgical techniques. Is there any consensus about the success rate, using the double endobutton closed loop (Struhl) technique? Why do the western orthopedic journals avoid discussing this newer technique?
Can you form a type 2 or type 1 separation just by sleeping? I originally thought my shoulder was dislocated it in my sleep, but went to the ER and the doctor said it looks like my shoulder is in the socket, then he asked me if I was having pain at the front of my shoulder at the end. Which I thought was funny cause why yes that where most of my pain is. He said that he thinks he sees a slight separation of my “AC joint” which I had to look up I’ve never heard of it before. Anyways he did exactly what you said put me in a sling and I have to call the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. I guess I’m asking because it sound like most people don’t get injured just by sleeping. I ask even more so because I can lift my arm any further then level with my shoulder, and pivoting my arm is hard it locks right up. Doesn’t hurt to move it’s just aches really.
Went to ER twice, still dying and waiting for MRI. Now I’m realizing I don’t need one? Got diagnosed with type two but my 1st injury was 6 months ago. I wasn’t even x-rayed then. Went back in a couple weeks ago after doing some serious gardening lol. I’m worried because my ex rays def show a separated shoulder but my shoulder muscles really hurt and I do have bouts of numbness and tingling in my arm/hand. I’m regularly in CO but in NJ/NYC for the next few weeks so rescheduling with them is going to be useless as you can imagine. 6 months to get where I’ve gotten. I’m super frustrated and in tons of pain. Any thoughts?
When you get an AC separation, and your shoulder blade is drooping in the back, what degree of separation is that? And would surgery be recommended for best healing results? Thanks!

Dear sir,i had the surgery for ac joint grade 3-4 using tight rope dog bone (arthrex). it's been 2 weeks now.my questions are: 1. For how long do i need to support my hand (right) wearing sling. 2. Do i need go for physiotherapy.

How long does it usually take for the joint to stabilize? I have a grade 3-5 maybe depending on the day. Just passed 2 weeks and started moving my arm out of the sling a little bit. Still feels like things are moving around in the joint. Bone on my shoulder pops up in certain positions. Doctor wants to do surgery, i wanna see how it heals.
Thank you doc for your video. I Just recently had a mountain bike accident and apparently have a Class 1 separation which my orthopedic doc suggested surgery being that I am in construction can do heavy lifting on a regular basis. Would you be willing to look at my x-ray and give me a second opinion?
Hi, I have been first diagnosed with a type II AC separation in the emergency room, and then re-diagnosed as a type III later by an orthopedist. I was given a sling; that helped a little bit, but that didn't really work very well. I tried a shoulder support brace, and that didn't work either. I found out that when lying on my back the clavicle fall in place almost perfectly. So what I'm doing now is use the straps of the sling to create some type of brace that go around both arms and connect in my back to keep my shoulder back as if I was lying down at all time. And that seems to give the best results. The drawback is that while wearing this, the motion of my arms is limited. Now, my question is: doing this as much as I can, will it help the ligaments to reconnect, or will they never reconnect on their own? I suppose age is a factor, and for the record, I'm not young any more. PS: thanks for the very informative video
You will need the surgery to reconnect the ligaments. It will cause future pain if you do not. I had a grade 3 separation and needed the surgery. I feel great 6 years later no issues.

It'll get better. There has to be a new ligament formed at the tip of the separation which will take time , and it'll take some more for it to seal itself back to its original position. But it does heal back and will start to look and feel like it was prior to injury. The funny thing is, your body knows it's damaged despite it being long.
They said I have a grade 2. But it's deffinitly a 3. I can put it down and the bone goes back to normal. Do I try heal this way? Will it pop up Everytime I raise my shoulder? Or will it heal properly?

I have type 3 AC separation since 2008 and never went to medical treatment, now I'm 31 and wondering can my AC separation be treated?
How do you feel now. ?
I have the type 2 separation, quarter sized bump on not only my acromioclavicular joint, but also my sternoclavicular joint has a quarter sized bump as well after a jiu jitsu injury. I was wondering since this separation has a bad impact on my scapula, is surgery an option for a young active male with dominant shoulder injury
How are you doing?
i have a soulder injury in 2017 i did MRI so the doc said i need surgery i did a rotator cuff repair after 3 months i finish my rehab. cuz of that i started to lift heavy things and i hurt my shoulder again unfortunately i did another surgery last year a "Latajet" and now i have this enormous AC joint pain over a year i dont know that to do.
I am being treated with physiotherapy since then training easy but the pain dont go away.
i tried PRP ,Steroids shots didnt help much
this pain is destroys mt sleep and my every day life
i did XRAY everything looks normal do u think that a 3rd surgery can help ??
i really dont know how to continue with my life cuz sport its only what i know.
I am a Krave Maga,Capoeira,MMA instractor
please help
Thanks doctor. Question I had a cortisone shot in my shoulder to treat sirva 3 months ago. Since that injection I have a bump on my clavicle by my shoulder. I’m now experiencing pain in the shoulder and clavicle bone area. Could the cortisone caused an issue with my ac joint?
Sir I met with an accident. I had type 3 ac joint seperation (clear bump) and scapula fracture.
Doc told me not to lift weight for life by injured arm and also I am unfit for army.
It's been 3 months and I am doing fine. I can do push up and pull up without any pain. I feel the same strength in both hands. Sometimes I feel the pain and little itching
Can I go to gym and Am I fit for army.
Plz help sir.

Drink brooo i feel it haha im out of mma for a month i have maybe grade one i done have a big bump
Hey how do you feel now bro ?
If you have a grade 3 ac separation get the surgery you won’t regret it. Without it you will never be the same don’t listen to the docs that say you don’t need it that’s a lie I’m so happy I got it I tried without and was in so much pain.
Jon Ireland ya been about 4 years I have a complete tear and they recommend not getting surgery kinda wish I did get it because every now and then if I move fast it feels weird and hurts but nothing I can’t handle but just a nagging injury from time to tie
Jon Ireland
Hi. How long has it been since your surgery Jon. How is your shoulder doing now?
jon ireland what was the type of surgery you got?
The doctor says it can be risky. This worries me to get surgery. I don't know what to do.
@@ericlatocki7588 Did you just have your injury a few days ago?
Shoulder separation only can heal with surgery!
6 months still has not healed fully, shoulder looks normal unless I shrug my shoulders. It's slightly off
It'll get better.
There has to be a new ligament formed at the tip of the separation which will take time , and it'll take some more for it to seal itself back to its original position. But it does heal back and will start to look and feel like it was prior to injury.
The funny thing is, your body knows it's damaged despite it being long.
Can i call you? Im a 16 yr old tennis player and am having shoulder problems in both. Its kind of worrysome
mine dr said mine was 3ed but resent it has got worce
They said I have a grade 2. But it's deffinitly a 3. I can put it down and the bone goes back to normal. Do I try heal this way? Will it pop up Everytime I raise my shoulder? Or will it heal properly?
My husband had a motorcycle accident now he is in pain in his shoulder we have an xray already and it looks like an shoulder separation. What we should do on it does it requires a surgery or operation
What ended up happening?
I got crashed when I was in 4th grade and I use both of my arms so I can secure my face I have type ac joint its been 6 years should I go to doctor? btw I'm 15 now
you've already healed around it, it's my belief that if it happened when you were still developing your muscles are going to develop to get stronger to compensate for the joint itself, it's basically what happened to me
So, on a Grade 3 do the ligaments reconnect on their own?
No, sadly not, but the structure around it can be strenghtend in order to achieve a certain stability.
I had got tackled and I started crying. I went to the emergency room and they told me I have an ac separation and they sent me to an orthopedic. I just want to know if I am a baby for crying or if it really does hurt that bad. And does it hurt more than a broken clavicle?
I didn't cry to this injury, but scared since I didn't had medical plan...
I did cry when I got hit in the balls one through that hurts a lot more!
Everybody's pain threshold is different! I have broken many bones, been hit by a car, crashed my motorbike into a car at speed, but I didn't cry of pain. I just accept it and groan. emotionally though, I am a wimp, I will cry at a movie. We're just different! it's scary getting injured!
Bruh Im a psychopath with next level pain tolerance and this break put me on my arse for about 20 minutes before I could even get up you're not a baby trust me
In 2015 I was riding my bike got hit by a car went to the hospital did x-rays told me I have a grade 3 shoulder seperation put me in a sling for 6 weeks then told me to do physiotherapy it's now 2024 shoulder is still separated and weight lifting and sometimes hear clicks in the front of my shoulder when I lift weights shoulder height or above
Dietary suggestions for a triathlete hoping to achieve rapid recovery of type 3 ac separation due to recent cycling accident?
Hey bro , I just got type 3 .. while doing 35mph on my bike ... did you go through any surgery or what type of therapy do you recommend, please any help would be useful I have no insurance at the moment
@@almiighttrack3158 I recommend getting some exercise tips from a physical therapist to increase shoulder strength. My Dr did not recommend surgery. the only issue is the protruding bone from the accident, but there is no pain or limitations. Only purpose of surgery is cosmetic to put bone back into place.
Grant Campany thank you , yes I plan on seeing an orthopedic surgeon ASAP , to get a better understanding on how to properly rehab using exercises,, thanks for the response bro 🙏🏼
