Driving my Honda S2000 on a nice mountain road to experience the 9,000 RPM F20C in its full glory, VTEC and all. The engine is a 2.0L naturally aspirated I4 producing 240 HP and 153 lb-ft of torque. Driving the S2000 is a mechanically satisfying experience that's unique to this vehicle. Everything is very short in precise: the throttle, brakes, steering, and shifting. The 6-speed close ratio manual makes downshifting very simple, and upshifts are smooth and fast.
The lightweight, RWD-roadster is an incredibly fun formula, and the Honda S2000 nails it in it's own unique way.

Kameron James they are pretty bullet proof, so high mileage doesn't mean much...
Gotta make sure the motor wasn't over revved by downshifting into the wrong gear

Bruno Danese true but I think I still want low mileage. then engine might be able to take it but the interior might look like crap. I want a weekend car that is in perfect shape.

I really like your reviews. You are talking about the things which magazines and other car reporters simply don't talk, but are interesting (at least to me). As a car enthusiast I agree that some of the newer cars feel more sporty and are much better than the older cars yet there is something to be said about the mechanical feel older cars have, and the human input needed to drive them fast and in control.

Actually the *new* emissions laws will be bringing back displacement.
Small displacement turbo engines are actually pretty dirty on boost but very clean when out of it. The new emissions tests will be taking this into account by spending more time closer to the vehicle's powerband.

I drive an '07 Civic Si, and while they're two totally different cars I can see a lot of the things that made the S2000 great in the Si at maybe 7 or 8 tenths. A high revving naturally aspirated four cylinder, a super slick transmission and really nice steering. That's why we loved Hondas

What everyone else says about it doesn't really bother me because I'm jolly happy with mine and that's what matters to me. It is true that it hasn't got that much torque in the lower rev range but that sweet transmission compensates for it. And too much torque would just end up spinning the car ...

An S2000 and a MX-5 are not that comparable.
The S2000 was a more of a speciality product, aim to the most skilled drivers. The MX-5 is a amazing roadster with an amazing chassis and a ton of fun in it but it's a car for the masses. Pretty much anyone can drive a MX-5 fast and have fun in it. And pretty much anyone can have fun driving a S2000 but it's much harder to drive it fast.
They are similiar... They are both roadsters, both lightweight and both aim to provide a fun driving experience but the similiarities stop there. The MX-5 is a car for everyone. The S2000 is a car for a special type of costumer.
      Congrats on the car!

Even the worst winter tire is better than any summer tire in snow or ice. It climp up hill. It stops.
I like to drive fast, on track. On public roads, I take it easy.
PS It is good for drifting during summer, because it melts. I put old and used ones on Ford Sierra, which has 90hp. Most fun I ever had at 40 km/h.

Garage the S2000 for the winter (except for clear days). Use the CrossTrek for winter months. I would just get yourself a good set of summer tires for the S2000. I don't see the point in getting winter tires for the Honda if you have an AWD Subaru. Michelin Pilot Super Sports for the S2000 and be done. Use the money you would spend on winter tires for maintenance, mods, etc.

My 2002 S2000 has never seen snow, I too have a Subaru for crappy weather. I put Bridgestone S02's on the S and though they may not have the longevity of the Michelins, they are unbelievable in handling. Honda designed the car and sent it out with SO 2s so who am I to second guess their vision?

    • @Red_Bearded_Dad

Also, instead of decreasing the rear spring rate to make it less twitchy, you probably want to get a stiffer front sway instead. That's what all the autocrossers do with this car =). There's a few to choose but I'd recommend the Karcepts one. Have fun!

    • @spaceminions

In upgraded 4x4s with extra-large tires, you may be looking at $3-400 per tire. A reasonable priced high quality tire for a small 4x4 SUV costed me $120 each. You can keep your $50 tires... I think for safety reasons my several-thousand-pound box ought to have a bit more money spent on each of its tires than I spend on my shoes. Otherwise forget ice and snow, even just rain and gravel are dangerous with bad tires.

'Bye bye Fuel'? Its not a Rx-8

    • @afterburn2600
      @afterburn2600 7 лет назад +1

The fuel economy sucks because of the gearing. Honda engineering had specific criterion when designing that side of it, and fuel economy was not as much on the docket. Reportedly, they wanted to hit max speed, max RPM, and max gear all at the same time. So 162mph, 9000rpm, 6th gear. That means a "cruise" rpm of 4500rpm at around 80 mph. It's just not going to be as efficient as a much larger engine loping at 1200rpm.
If you drive it like a normal human being, hitting 22mpg in town and 26mpg on the highway is within reason (I know someone who gets these numbers). If you drive it enthusiastically like I do, 18mpg is normal in town. Highway obviously won't be affected unless you are a speed demon and drive in triple digits. If you are racing it or driving like you stole it, that is very different, but the cost of track time, tickets, and consumables (like tires, clutch, brakes, rear diff lol) will far outweigh the cost of fuel...
Also, it's 240hp, not 220 for the AP-1 gen cars (at the crank).

I've had my AP2 for years, and doubtful I'll ever replace it -- it's too much fun. Agreed they are twitchy, though, and the AP1 supposedly more so (I haven't driven one yet). Apparently the AP2 has a softer rear anti-roll bar and wider tyres to combat rear end craziness, so it might be something to consider.
Tyres are super important. 50 bux ones would be scary haha. Even changing from Conti's to Michellin Pilot Sport on my car was a big improvement.

That was a "mechanically satisfying" review, Jason, nice vid! While I agree that 6th gear is too short for cruising, it does come in handy when you're on the highway and you need instant torque to move into/out of a more favorable position in traffic. I've driven vehicles with tall 6th gears and they have no response at that end. I dunno, it's got both good and bad.

Congratulations on your S2000! Having owned both an NSX & a Prelude SH, I consider this just about a near perfect 2 seat, RWD sports car (for the money). The next step up would be the Porsche Boxster. I would consider keeping the $50.00 tires it has now, and rewarding your S2000 with good performance tires in the spring. You now have your brand new Crosstrek to get you thru the winter.
