  • Was supercharging my S2000 worth it? How does a supercharged S2000 drive? Why did I supercharge my S2000? How fast is a supercharged S2000? EE Shirts! - bit.ly/2BHsiuo

    I'm finally driving my supercharged S2000! Which leads to four questions: 1) How is it to drive? 2) How fast is it - real world, not dyno results? 3) Is it worth the cost to supercharge an S2000? 4. Why did I choose to supercharge my S2000 rather than other options?
    From a driving aspect, what I like about the modified S2000 is that it maintains a lot of the stock refinement; it doesn't feel significantly modified car from a drive-ability standpoint, it's just as street-able as it always has been (or hasn't been). It's just faster!
    To test how much faster, I used the same method I've been using since I bought the S2000. I use a VBOX sport and accelerate on the same road in the same direction, in the same gear from 10 mph to 60 mph, and measure the improvement in acceleration in increments of 5 mph. The video includes full details of test results!

      Engineering Explained how does this effect the vtec?

    • @scottxp800
      @scottxp800 6 лет назад +2

      Trill Mixin, It doesn't. The stock ECU is still controlling the VTEC without any changes, it may fully engage at a slightly higher rpm because the engine revs up more quickly, but it comes on at the same RPM as it always has. It does make it more effective as volumetric efficiency is increased because of the supercharger.

      To say adding 80whp to a car around the weigh of an S2K is not a lot? I'd say that compared to the weigh to power ratio of most cars today adding 80whp to an S2K makes it more than fast enough for most people.

      HymezKidd does the MKS drive any good? all the tuned SHOs I've seen couldn't shake the weight

    • @HymezKidd
      @HymezKidd 6 лет назад +2

      Kystify You'll probably hear this a lot from us MKS and SHO owners. But considering the weight the handling, cornering and acceleration is pretty impressive. It's obviously not a 2 door s2000 sport coupe. It's a full size sedan. These Boats however are making their way into high 11s with relatively mild mods. The tune alone being the biggest gains. Exhaust and downpipes next. Mid-Low 12s is pretty much standard for these cars tuned.

      Lack of rear diff upgrade from 4.11:1 to something like 3.90:1 .
      You run out of gear with the stock set up. 150 and 8000 rpm or something like 25-30mph in 6th gear at 3000rpm.
      It freaking sucks. 1st is useless and i'd rather not me at 4000rpm at 70mph.

  • @eaglefat9398
    @eaglefat9398 6 лет назад +50

    Boost doesn't affect internals as much as people think because its all compressive load which the rods are far better at handling. However deck thickness,open or closed deck, head gasket, head bolts location and number of head bolts , strength/diameter of the head bolts and the ability of the exhaust valves to disperse the added heat are the things that will kill a engine when you add boost to a non boosted engine.

      What do you mean by the rods are better at handling a compressive load?

    • @eaglefat9398
      @eaglefat9398 6 лет назад +8

      It takes a lot more force to break or bend a rod by compressing it than it does to stretch it which can happen easily when you increase RPM to make more power however with boost your RPM's stays the same. So a N/A engine that could only handle 400hp on stock rods might be able to handle 700hp on boost because boost only adds extra load/force pushing down on the rods and it a lot harder to smash a rod into its self then it is to bend or stretch it.

      Exactly: Everyone decided to move to Oregon as well, so basically, if you really do enjoy driving, it's now a good 2.5 hours to get out and away from all the subaru outback afraid of ALL corners / rage inciting prius drivers. I used to like Subaru's as I owned a wrx, but now it's all outback/me too models, and EVERY single one of them insist on going in to full blown panic mode on virtually every corner because Subaru's naturally understeer because of the engine placement (due to awd) and the risk adverse demographic that gravitates towards them (exceptions are obviously sti/wrx/modified owners). In fact, I've moved Outback owners ahead of Prius's on my list of rage inciting drivers as my logic says that ATEAST the prius drivers can blame the bike tires for the obsessively slow speeds. CRV drivers are next on the list, then virtually every other "me too" suv/suv drivers. So no, don't give out locations and we need to ban publications that pull the "top ten best places to live" articles that the morons from California read and then decide to move like locusts up here and to basically DESTROY everything that once made the PNW a moderatly decent place to live. Personally I'm advocating a 'move in' tax with our local senate, as we need to start collecting from these idiots whom have inflated equity positions from the bay area and other areas.

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 6 лет назад

      07wrxtr1 California inflation really hurt a city I live in, in Utah. It hurts the economy so much that I had to leave for better pay. Everyone's too broke to spend money which keeps the economy stagnant. To make it worse they're often retiring Californians so they're very cheap (understandable just not helpful).
      I think those top places to live articles should be illegal too but it's hard to argue with freedom of speech. I bet real estate companies lobby to get in so they can have a selling spree when people move in.

It's not going to be a torque monster." My car had the 2.2, which was a stroked 2.0 and honestly, I thought it was quite driveable below VTEC speeds. I did get the chance to test drive the 2.0 before I bought my 2.2 and I felt the same about it too so don't hop me about the 2.2 being better. I'm sure it was, but it wasn't that much better and frankly, I always thought I'd rather have the 9k redline because Honda dropped that by 1k when it stroked the engine to 2.2L. As for what it's like as a road car? I made one trip from the Texas Gulf Coast where I live out to California. I got there via Colorado, Utah, and Nevada, and I spent a lot of time on CA-1 and it was a great trip. I avoided interstate highways as much as possible and the car did just fine. I was also very surprised at how it did fuel mileage wise. EPA was 20 city / 25 highway and I averaged will into the 29's while on the open road and got up to 36 mpg up in the mountains in Colorado and Yosemite Nat's Park, but that's up at 10k altitudes and cruising very easy. Still, they were nice numbers to see. Bottom line is, it's one fine automobile!

      @@tamoo6028 - your opinion. I don't feel like I missed out on much. I wasn't thrilled when I discovered they changed the engine in the 2004 model year but that's just how it timed out when I was ready to buy. I would have preferred the 2.0 if I'd been given the choice but I can't say I was disappointed in the 2.2 when it's all said and done.

      As a shorter-to-medium-length circuit carver, the S2000 makes a better B-class tuner than just about anything else in the game, including Lotus. It's still very competitive in A-class as well. Some even do S-class tunes but at that level you're dealing with the car's limit of track width & tire rubber width, wheelbase and (last but certainly not least!) aero.

      It is fairly easy to estimate - this tune at sea level in cool weather with competent driver on smooth tarmac should do in the low fives to 60mph and low-mid 13s in a 1/4mi. OEM numbers are approx 6sec//14.5sec. He did modify his final drive, so that could make for some small difference. It also may do a bit better still on summer tires or slicks, depending on the surface.

    You hit the nail on the head with your comments on the engine. I don't care for the S2000 for the simple fact that it has very little low RPM torque. People buy horsepower but drive torque, and these cars are just frustrating to drive. As you said, people gravitate towards this car just for this reason, it's unique method of achieving performance. Great video, very informative!

    Just a question which might sound a bit odd, but is there a supercharger system with variable pulleys (somewhat like a cvt)? Can imagine that such a system would be benefifial to get more low end torque efficiently

      Look up twin-screw superchargers. They give the option of low end torque as well as provide all the benefits of the centrifugal superchargers, and are what are being used on most of the OEM options today (Shelby GT, ZO6) because of their design. The problem is getting them to fit without having been originally designed for it and they cost an arm and a leg

    • @larsjrgensen5975
      @larsjrgensen5975 6 лет назад +3

      Old airplanes had 2 speed superchargers, but those engines where huge.
      A CVT or other type of gearbox could be to complex er expensive, making it cheaper to put on 2 superchargers or a turbo and supercharger on the engine.
      It is very rare, but i have seen videos where people mount superchargers with a coupling like a aircon pump pulley, so you can shut off the supercharger when the engine is running.

    • @mariuszanfir2298
      @mariuszanfir2298 6 лет назад

      I believe you can achieve a similar effect by using a wastegate. You can then increase the boost at low rpm and, consequently, the torque, while being able to release the extra boost, that would be too much for the engine, at high rpm. But, in the end, you'd just be making a centrifugal SC work like a roots SC or a turbo in terms of power delivery. Might as well go for one of those :)

    • @BassRacerx
      @BassRacerx 6 лет назад

      for the added complexity and weight such a system would involve you could go with twin charging (both supercharged and turbocharged) and basically get the benefits of both worlds. You could also put on the smaller pulley and have an electronic waste gate to limit the psi for when its rainy out or you are driving long distances out or when you just dont want to release ALL the demons.

      yeah agreed (with christian). I mean they're similar in that you need to drive them at high revs to stay in the fun band, and they're both rear drive coupes with great chassis' , but engine wise there's much more of an obvious vtech bump on the S2000, the Rx is pretty smooth all the way up.

    • @bgdwiepp
      @bgdwiepp 6 лет назад +2

      I previously owned an RX-7 (why I made the comment) which i swapped to a single turbo and some other mods, the engine did rev smoothly, the power delivery was smooth indeed.
      However, the case is the same for the S2000, the power is quite smooth, it's deceptive though, it doesnt "feel" as smooth because the exhaust note etc.I think with a standalone ECU and a good tune his S2000 would be as smooth as any wankle.
      The reliability is a whole different thing...

  • @aramchek
    @aramchek 6 лет назад +4

    10 psi less than an fa20, but higher compression, so not sure what the point of that statement was, you know they can't be directly compared in that manner. I bet the fa20 has a lot more torque down low too.

    • @aramchek
      @aramchek 6 лет назад

      Still, you know higher compression is the difference, you can't say "I have x hp at only 6 psi and this other engine only makes y hp at whatever number", when the compression ratio is higher on one motor, that makes a big difference in the results you'll get from forced induction.

    • @michaelbullington3182
      @michaelbullington3182 6 лет назад

      Yeah, I thought about this too; and he said 16 psi. He must be thinking of the EJ 2.5L (he owned an STI). While not as reliable, a mildly modded Subaru, tuned to properly overcome the crappy factory tune, would have no problem beating the Honda (not in handling tho'!). And, it is because of the difference in compression; especially factoring in direct injection with the FA.

    I just found your channel. Now I want an S2000 as my daily driver! I have a 120 mile round trip commute to work every day...

    I am and forever be a Miata guy but I seriously respect what Honda did with the S2000. My life goal with my '90 NA6 is to make a daily driveable ITB NA6 that can run the same times as a S2000.

    Lol "just 80hp", that's about half of my cars hp. Bet you dont get 30+mpg tho ;). (Mpg is the only thing I can compete in with my slowmobile)

    I aided a friend with installing the old Comptech 6lbs kit (similar to the SoS kit as far as I know) into a 2004 AP2, and it REALLY woke the thing up. Nothing disappointing about another ~90 hp in such a light car.

    f20c can handle 800hp almost stock just head studs not pistons or rods. i think that s2000 can handle 500hp all day long no problem and it will out live you

    I almost bet that I have less money into my k20c swapped S2000 type R. I bought a totalled 2018 Civic type R at an auction for $3800. It was hit in the back by a truck and was absolutely mangled from the rear doors back. The front was also smashed a little from being forced into another car in front of it. The damage on both ends I think kept people from bidding on the car, but I had talked to a friend from the wrecking company who knew the car was still running somehow after the accident.
    I already had everything I needed from hasport for a k20 s2k swap, hondata handled the ecu, all together I have like $5400 into my build. Made 290 wheel and the engine is 100% stock other than things that needed to be rotated or moved in some way.

      You have a K20c in your S2000? Got a build thread? I think you might be the first person to do this.

      James Donegan I filmed a lot of it as I did it, but I'm pretty awful at actually sitting down and editing the video to upload something. I documented anything that was different than a normal k20 swap pretty thoroughly.
      I'm pretty sure I am the first to do the swap, no one on RUclips had made the claim and I get a lot of puzzled looks from people. It wasn't to bad to get done either, maybe 2 weeks from purchase of the wreck to driving down the road in the s2k.

      Definitely come over to S2ki or r/s2000 and post some pictures up. There's a ton of interest over whether or not the K20c is a feasible swap if you could get your hands on one.
      $4,500 is also less than it would cost to do a proper K20/K24 hybrid swap in a S2K as well. I know that's a very popular swap, but it's more expensive than people expect once you get all the adapters needed and power adders put in so you actually make more than the standard F20 or F22.

      5400 for only 290 hp jesus u played yo self,could've bought a v8, but I guess is each ones choice to get wat they want gg

      That V8 would ruin the balance of the car completely, shifting the centre of weight to the front and pretty much nuke any chance it had of going round a corner at the speed it could beforehand without significant investment into the suspension setup, which would, of course put you back where you would have started paying for the 5k engine swap, and have fun trying to squeeze a V8 into a S2K on a budget

      BTW, I had also ordered a clutch from Science of Speed. I was looking for something with stock feel but with a lot more grip over stock. Their Sport 325 is on point with what I was looking for and not bad for the price as compared to other companies. Just something you should look into if later in the market for a clutch.

    The nice things of Centrifugal , is that it still makes the engine "Breath" because there is a pass though in the impeller where a Volumetric solution will close the induction line limiting the amount of air only to what the compressor can provide.
