    I really don't know why foreigners get surprised with anything related to food in Portugal. Our culinary is one (if not the best) of the best in the world, either in variety and quality.
    I like all sorts of geographic food styles, but in terms of variety, while those seem like an ensemble with a certain style, Portuguese cuisine is a medley performed by an orchestra.

    Pena Palace in Sintra is nice to look at and photograph from the outside but not worth waiting in line to see it inside. Quinta de Regaleira is amazing and there's so much more to see in Sintra. O pais de meus avos e lindo!

      I remember the good old days when it was cheap to visit the Pena palace and there weren't endless queues of tourists waiting to get in... (that was just about 15 years ago, when I first went there 😂). But yea. There's lots to see: Castelo dos Mouros, Quinta da Regaleira, Convento dos Capuchos... Nowadays, my favourite place to go near Lisbon is Setúbal and the Serra da Arrábida. In comparison to Sintra, it's a hidden gem, off the beaten track for foreign tourists (let's keep it that way, this is our secret XD).

    1:04 - Wrong, that's the birth place of the Pastel de Belém, the Pastel de Nata was created elsewhere and it's a different pastry. "But they look the same", you might say. Yes they do, however the Pastel de Belém has a secret recipe, so the Pastel de Nata can never be a replica.

    Portugal in my opinion all things considered starting first with its very important contribution to global human evolution history & not just in the age of discovery I'm speaking of , culinary - cuisine , people, arts - music , 4th most spoken language on the planet , safe - clean , its unique very old blood line... on & on & on... Portugal & its people surely deserve much more respect & acknowledgment then it has been getting over many years now , many people especially here in North America don't even know how great of a country - culture it is, including some Portuguese themselves , sad but true ... Hollywood has been glorifying other countries with less of an impressive history for years now while ignoring Portugal's ,, shame on you Hollywood .

    In 1834, religious orders were extinguished due to the implementation of a liberal constitutional monarchy that defended the separation between religion and the State. Friars and monks from regular orders were expelled from monasteries and their goods sold. Female convents alienated after the death of the last nun. Conventual and monastery recipes were published. The sweets were made in accordance with the liturgical calendar and with small regional variations. One of the recipes that came out into the secular world were the Belém pastries. If you want to know the secret, just look for the "santa clara pastries" and you'll find the secret ingredient 😁

    Ummm no it’s not. Boring as hell. Italy, France, Spain, Greece are leagues ahead re flavour and cuisine. Most restaurants serve dull cod with boiled veg. The pastel de nata is the only highlight in a very unappealing “cuisine”. Portugal is so hyped right now. What Portugal DOES have is very reasonably priced decent wine. So it’s heaven for wine lovers!

      Boring? You talk like someone who went to a Lisbon terrace-for-dumb-tourists, ordered the dish of the day, and thinks they've gotten to know Portuguese cuisine.
      In fact, portuguese cuisine is much richer and complex than Greek or Spanish cuisines: all kinds of fish, all kinds of meat, all kind of vegetables and spices, all kinds of cooking methods. You have no idea.

    • @paulat6389
      @paulat6389 3 месяца назад +9

      A shame that GMA forgot to include the Fado. I am from Brazil, living in Florida, first discovered Portugal in 2016. Since then visited at least twice a year, always renting a car, to reach those little villages and towns, like Vila de Geres, Manteigas, Serra da Estrela, and Tomar, and crossing to Spain to visit Santiago.
      The next trip is on December 13, to see Mariza's concert at the Super Bock Arena, in Porto. Can't wait to see Mariza again. First saw her in Miami in 2021 and then in a Monastery in Braga in 2022. And I always stay in Matosinhos, a jewel of a place.

    You should add Portugal to your travel bucket list because it offers stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. However, it's important to travel responsibly. The recent influx of tourists, especially Americans, has led to a rise in housing prices and living costs, making it difficult for locals to afford their own cities. By visiting respectfully and supporting local businesses, you can enjoy Portugal's beauty while helping to preserve its charm and accessibility for residents.

    • @bearchow1723

      That is the job of local, regional, and even national government agencies. Tourists shouldn’t be blamed for elements that could use adjustment. Not to say that the government should be blamed either. They probably didn’t expect this growth in interest. In any case, they have the opportunity now to address it.

    • @byfilipa9549
      @byfilipa9549 3 месяца назад +1

      @@bearchow1723 I understand your point, and you're right. It's primarily the responsibility of local, regional, and national governments to manage the impact of increased tourism. Tourists aren't to blame for these challenges, and it's likely that the government didn't anticipate this surge in interest. Now, they have an opportunity to implement measures to address these issues and ensure that the benefits of tourism are balanced with the needs of local residents.

      Endangered to be honest, partly because of how agriculture is runned here and terrible green washing by the past governments, one of our last prime ministers, Socrates made so many “deals” that were environmental crimes, and also due to touristic development, we don’t need more tourists, it doesn’t pay off in the end, for example there is a big part of our public national coast in Alentejo that is being completely destroyed, it’s irreversible and irreplaceable, near Grandola, I believe that actor Clooney is one of the investors, the dunes ares being destroyed, there is a process running in court but the corruption that outside money brings is just TOO MUCH. And most Portuguese people can’t afford rents anymore due to tourism.
