  • ‘Remembering Seven Keys to Doomsday’ tells the story of the 1974/5 West End ‘Doctor Who’ stage show ‘Seven Keys to Doomsday’, with new interviews and never before seen images.
With special thanks to the late Trevor Martin, Terrance Dicks, Simon Jones, Robin Browne, Jacquie Dubin, Mick Hughes, Nicholas Briggs, Kevin Davies and Jeremy Bentham for their interviews and time reflecting on the show.
This documentary was created as part of the assessment for my BA(Hons) Filmmaking course at Croydon School of Art.

Trevor Martin made the honorable contribution of recreating his Dr. Who and Seven Keys To Doomsday for Big Finish Audio so that it would be truly immortalized. I wish however that I could have seen the original stageplay back in 1974 because, aside from seeing its Dr. Who portrayal by Trevor, seeing Daleks on stage for obvious reasons must have been awesome. Thank you for this documentary and thank you, Trevor.

Was lucky enough to see the play on Monday 30th December, 1974. Actually acquired a cassette tape recording of the show which has sadly been lost. Would probably be quite a gem if it still existed. Such a shame. But happy memories of a wonderful event. This documentary brought the memories flooding back. Thankyou

Re: recording- aw, damn it... That could've rivaled Six Flags over Georgia's B'riar Rabbit ride's audio and footage

This is amazing, very well made and professional indeed. Having been born one year after the play was on I have sadly never really fully appreciated it until now. RIP Trevor Martin.

Wow, just wow. This was an amazing documentary. Just the still images you were able to find left me in ecstasy. To see the Clawrantulas (sic) in their realized form. I had no idea that the Master of Karn was this towering thing. The Tardis console was starkly beautiful. I loved every bit of it. The descriptions of the cast members, the economics of the show, the impact of the IRA. The description of back projection, the interaction of Daleks and creatures, the way the Master's head was to glow... it would have been utterly wonderful to have seen it.
I know Big Finish has done an audio. But it's just not the same thing. I'm a visual person. Watching the Documentary gave me this wonderful sense of what the play might have been like, full of wonder and strangeness and clever effects and imagery. Just brimming with electricity and liveness.
It came so close. In a proper world, they might have been a bit more careful, the set might have been built with an eye to portability to other venues. The IRA could have delayed. Or at least with other venues and better budgeting, the show could have gone on the road and been a commercial success. It could have become an institution. There might have been a follow up Doctor Who play.
It's heartbreaking that there's no visual record, no film or video of the stage play, not even super8 footage. I understand from Wikipedia that there were revivals or new productions in 1981 and 1984, and in New Zealand, but the productions wouldn't have been as elaborate.
Thank you. Thank you so very much for this brilliant documentary that highlights this wonderful bit of lost Who.

Thanks for making this. It provides a lot of backstory that you don't get elsewhere. I recently added the show program to my collection of Classic Who items so this is very timely.

I was really lucky and got to see this with my parents. Really enjoyed it. I was 9 at the time. The part I probably remember the most was the regeneration sequence at the start and the two kids making a lot of noise at the back of the theatre and running up to and on to the stage. It was only once they were in place that I realised that the female was Wendy Padbury.
I'm glad that you made this Tom, thank you 🙂

This is terrific - I assumed this was a professional production until I casually checked the description. This could easily appear on a BBC DVD.

Thanks for posting, I always assumed this stage production was a naff pantomime-esque production, whereas it sounds like it had quite a bit of money spent on it (for the period) and was something I would have enjoyed!

Thoroughly enjoyed the documentary. Well written and edited, throwing new light on a little known piece of Doctor Who history. As I am a little hard of hearing at times, I did run the video with captions on - there were some amusing moments and I did occasionally have to rewind and check exactly what had been said. Despite that, a very good documentary. :-)
