Absolutely mental that they didn’t finish it for the next series. What a waste of resources.

Way better than I'd expected, a really good "making of" that didn't have an end result!

I've got a HD version of Shada on BluRay and it's absolutely fantastic, the missing portions have been made up with computer animation, the sound has been given a pseudo stereo remix and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Mix, the original BBC1 continuity at the start has been added and looks clean too, the Dr.Who theme tune has been given a surround makeover using the original elements and the electronic spangles have been found and overdubbed and the end theme is in 5.1 too with the original theme tune elements being stereoised as well and extended with 2 rounds of the middle-eight section plus complete roll-call credits of all the people responsible in the putting together and production of this new release.

Is that a fan made project? Whatever it is I’d love to get a copy! SHADA has been one of those mysterious holy grails of DR Who and I’ve been trying to get a decent version for years.

Love Shada. It's genuinely one of my favourite DW stories. Never understood why Adams hated it so much (maybe it's just because the pet project that he'd originally wanted to do got refused and this had to be produced instead).
Interesting that some of the best bits are serendipitous. The chase sequence being in the daytime really adds to the feeling of Shada being flooded with light and freshness that the location shooting gives the serial and the vocal combo is another highlight that I'm surprised to hear was on a whim.

percy blakeney I never knew Douglas Adams hated it. I thought he was crushed it was cancelled like Tom and everyone was.

    • @Hawkeye26
      @Hawkeye26 4 года назад +1

@@nicholasdickens2801 Adams had tried playing the time pressure game in the hopes that his original idea, which had The Doctor retiring from adventuring, which was initially rejected...suddenly be the only choice left. That's why this documentary talks about the story being a rush job for him.
@percy blakeney I too am quite surprised the choir bit was a fluke, but am glad to have it in. It's one of the parts I always enjoyed since watching the original VHS with the Tom Baker narration.

I have the older version where Tom Baker did his "Masterpiece Theatre" impression and the new one with full live-action and animation, finally telling the whole story. And even a proper credit (finally!) for Delia Derbyshire's theme for the show. Excellent.

I suspect Douglas Adams might've actually preferred the 'half' animated approach...

    • @timrob12

@@markandresen1 There is this bit where they return to the professor's study and they start running away in animation and they enter the room in live-action. That was a great transistion.

Unfortunately, the "official" animated version has some crap animation quality, and the music wasn't as good as what was used in the original version that was released on VHS.

VERY short-sighted of the BBC who always look after themselves & never their poor workers.
DW had reached 15.1 MILLION views at a time when Star Wars had bulldozed Science Fantasy out of existence. It was a phenomenon, with a strangely mixed ratio of audiences. They filmed in *Cambridge* just because of their reputation at that stage for being character driven stories with scripts which seldom pandered to the masses.
I will never support the BBC again. Over the years I've heard ALL the crews talk of each other with love as they talk of the BBC with disgust. They cut corners, cut budgets, laughed at progressive ideas, wiped tapes just to avoid reducing their bonuses, & sniggered all the way to the bank.
This story is lost. Still. It is lost to time. Perhaps the worst demise to one of the best seasons of Dr Who.
I still can't stand The Leisure Hive & the following change in mood, to this day. It is so jolting & lacks authenticity.
You can't blame Tom for growing disgruntled once JNT took over & made a typical soapy, transatlantic studio drama for numb-skulls. More intent of caking everything in question marks, than pushing boundaries. Fan fiction. Very much like it is now.
Maybe we can have a Black, Disabled, Trans-gender, Midget as Dr Who next no?!

Not sure where you got the idea of season 17 being one of the best. 4 out of the 5 televised stories were mediocre. The audience figures only reached 15 million because there were strikes at iTV that meant the BBC was the only network broadcasting in the country.
Tom was 'disgruntled' because the previous producer Graham Williams had allowed him to do whatever he wanted. Turn up late to rehearsals, bully the other actors, refuse to follow the scripts etc. JN-T put a stop to it and that annoyed him.

To be fair, Star Wars is itself science fantasy. DW is a lot harder on the hard-soft scale of sci-fi.
