    The Thanksgiving cactus is ‘spiked’ on the cladodes(leaf segments). The Christmas cactus is scalloped’ on the cladodes. I think you mentioned it backwards in your video. Also, for anyone interested, the Easter cactus has lobular or oval cladodes with no spikes or scallops along their edges. I remember the Easter cactus leaf shape kind of like a FLAT egg shape. Thanks for the coffee grounds tip. I have a whole bunch of Thanksgiving cacti under my full spectrum light for 12 hours a day and some in my cold window area and they are shooting off tons of buds right now. My cacti bloom several times a year so I must be doing something right. The plants were all repotted into new fresh pots and cactus soil with perlite added for better drainage. Over a rocky base to increase the moisture level in my area. Leaves were hosed under a gentle spray to get surface dust off and increase light absorption. Those sprayed plants seem to have up to 4 flowers on each leaf segment end. I wish I could put pictures here to show you all. I love my cactus plants.

    Very interesting...all the other videos I've been looking at say lots of water & humidity because these are originally rainforest plants. Yours certainly look great. I have several and they're in different states of health. I'm pretty negligent with watering, my plants all have to be OK with about once monthly. I figure they are thriving on all the love I give them :) I'm going to add coffee grounds, too since we use high quality organic- I love the idea of it going even further than our morning cup!

      Coffee has many benefits for acid loving plants. I have it mixed into all my cactus plants soil. I also find my plants don’t better in a west window not sure why but they seem to do better there I have tried east windows and it did nothing for them. I don’t have any south windows. The west windows tend to be warmer so that may be why. If the clads start to shrivel I know I need to water their starting to dehydrate. It’s good practice to have them on a schedule I try to do that as well. I seem to learn through trial and error. I am hoping to learn more about these plants through propagation and trying some different things. I am going to experiment next with pro max root booster and see how they respond to that for new cuttings. I found a bottle didn’t realize I had it when I cleaned out my closets so we will see what it does if I get good results I will do a video on it. Right now I started using it on my seedlings to test it out.

    I didn’t know about using the grounds on Christmas Cactus. But I save all my coffee grounds to put on my compost pile. I keep the empty plastic container that the coffee was purchased in. I remove the used coffee grounds from the pot, let them dry by placing the grounds while still in the filter in any shallow dish or pan. Once dry, I put them in the plastic container and take out to the compost pile when full.

    • @creatingmygarden

      Thats a good idea Katie! I use them on my Cactus in Winter then spread around plants that lime acidity in summer. Such a great use of something that normally goes in garbage. They would be very useful in compost.

    Hi! A few questions, how often should I put coffee grounds down to keep the slugs away and how far from the hostas base? I have a terrible slug problem.
    As for using the grounds as a feed, how often should I use it around my roses and my Christmas cactus? Can I use it concurrently with other feeds such as Miracle Grow and rose feed? There is enough here to make a more in depth video on coffee grounds!! :)

    • @creatingmygarden
      @creatingmygarden  6 месяцев назад +1

      You can put them around your roses and hostas monthly that would be excellent if you have hydrangeas they will love the coffee grounds as well all acid loving plants benefit from it. The cactus can have them monthly as well when they are growing or mix them in the soil with you pot up. Yes you can mix them or alternate them with fertilizer. It’s a good idea to make another video on it thanks for the tip. Also save your egg shells and grind them up and give to your outdoor plants they will benefit from the calcium.

      @marm2371 thank you so much. I may do another video on it when I can start working on the garden more. I do prefer to use natural fertilizer and pest control vs a bag of chemicals even organic chemicals can still be chemicals. I tend to try to naturalize plants other then annuals so they can adjust to my climate and not rely so much on chemical additives but it’s whatever works for a gardener if the plants are healthy and happy and it works with you garden routine then that’s perfect. My way isn’t the only way it’s just what works for me. I don’t want to be that RUclipsr that says their way is the only way I see enough of that on youtube and it’s a turn off for me with some of these big garden channels. We can all learn each other’s techniques and methods to make our gardens flourish.

      Probably didnt like the change in environment. If its pot bound you could pot it up and add the coffee grounds then start feeding it. The nutrients should help and then water from bottom when its good and dry.

      @RobinEdwards-cr2mj no need to dilute they love acid it’s good to feed them coffee grounds every once and a while or even left over coffee as part of their watering cause eventually the soil is depleted of nutrients this puts it back. I use the miracle grow cactus soil as well in fact I just potted up an Easter cactus cutting using it and will be giving it a drink of left over coffee.

    How long do you soak a pot of xmas cactus when you are watering it? I have been having a lot of trouble watering my xmas cactus from the top….they are getting too much water and are rotting….please help!

    • @creatingmygarden
      @creatingmygarden  11 месяцев назад +2

      Hi Chris - if u have already over watered your cactus take them out of the pot if u can and let them dry off u can remove the soil to let them breath. When I water from the bottom I soak them for about 15-20 min and it probably only once a month or every 6 weeks I check the weight of the pot to see if it’s super light. I also watch for soft tips cause if the tips of your cactus are soft it’s too wet and I sometimes remove those soft tips if I over watered. I only get into trouble with over watering if I water from the top plus gnat larvae can hatch to from overhead watering. Hope this helps I had to learn from my mistakes in the past with cactus.

    I have 2 cacti in the same pot. One blooms and is firm, the other is more limp and doesn’t bloom. Do you have any insight into why this might be.

    • @creatingmygarden
      @creatingmygarden  10 месяцев назад

      Check the moisture in the soil on both i f one is limp and soft leaves usually that means either not enough water or too much you will know if u stick your fingers into the soil right to the bottom of the pot beside each of them. Withered up leaves is usually to dry leaves falling off of to much water.

    • @annmcwilliams8269
      @annmcwilliams8269 10 месяцев назад +1

      @creatingmygarden I had read that. I haven't actually stuck my fingers into the soil, but there's so only about 2" between them it doesn't seem likely that there'd be a great difference. I'll consider re-potting the less productive one. Thank you.

    • @creatingmygarden
      @creatingmygarden  10 месяцев назад

      @annmcwilliams8269 that would be my next suggestion to remove the one and see what the soil is like if it really dry you will know or really wet. Sometimes we have no choice as gardeners but do a deep dive to see what the heck is going on. You’re on the right track. I would recommend clay pots for cactus i am slowly moving all mine to clay so much easier to control wet and dry conditions if you do not already have it in clay. I am not sure of your climate but here with forced air furnace i find clay easier better for succulents and cactus.

    • @creatingmygarden
      @creatingmygarden  10 месяцев назад

      Christmas Cactus or Thanksgiving Cactus love acid so you could add a sprinkle to the soil when you repot or dilute it in water to feed your plant as a fertilizer at a 1-1 mix. I wouldnt do it more than once every 4-6 weeks and feed the plant from the bottom of it by setting it in the mixture for about 15-20 min when the plant is good and dry. They dont need much to hydrate them.

    • @creatingmygarden
      @creatingmygarden  10 месяцев назад +1

      Put your finger in the pot and shovel your finger all the way to bottom of pot to see if it’s really dry or wet. Usually shriveled indicates dry but sometimes they fool us if you put your finger in you will know the status of the moisture that will help to revive it. Shriveled also indicates lack of nutrients in the soil so coffee should help and new soil. I know they say cactus like to be pot bound but when they’re suffering sometimes we have to pot up and give them fresh soil. You’re on the right track.👌

      @@kathleenblanchard7971 good idea to take cuttings and start over. Sometimes think the plants we get aren’t the healthiest when we receive them especially if we aren’t over watering. Hopefully the cuttings will root and take off for you. Sounds like ur doing everything right.
