- Hmm… can’t open .exe files in Windows 7 (100% solved….!!). To solve this problem follow these steps:
Search for “Regedit” and open the registry as administrator. Open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT folder - locate .exe and with this .exe selected right click on default - modify - change value to exefile
Now locate the exefile folder. With this exefile selected modify the value in (Default) as “%1”%* (6 characters).
And now open the exefile folder and then open shell and with the “open” folder selected modify the value in (Default) as “%1”%*
Now restart your computer and your problem should be fixed. Please tell us your experience and reviews. We will happy always to help you.. Thanks for watching this video by itech tips…!!

question: I did this on a laptop and after it allows me to open applications the name when you right click turned to "%1"%*. How do I change it back to the word "Open" instead of this?
just search regedit
select on "open"
then default
right click on it in" modify"
and then write open. thats it

Sorry it did not work for me, messed up my computer, now the computer even does not let me to open up the systen restore so I can go back with system setting. I also tried to reverse the action now it does not even open the Regedit any more.

Seems like an awfully convoluted and dangerous way to fix a problem. How did the problem start? What caused the change in the registry to require all that messing around? I have a similar problem and not sure of the cause. I can't open installer files. What I've had to do is send them to a Compressed (Zip) file and then double click on the .exe file in the Zipped folder to open it.
