Another way this happens is with a lot of cellphone use - we tend to hunch and hang our heads to look at the phone - this creates muscle memory and we keep doing it. I just broke my collarbone on the track from a low-speed corner fall - it happens but for sure, proper posture, muscle-building and technique is key - that's why I keep coming back here - great content. Thanks guys. Oh yeah - nobody cares if you think you're first to comment - honestly - NOBODY!

Interesting about collar bones etc. I've fallen so many times and never once broke anything (on a bike). I'm thinking falling often enough and you get the right reflexes to protect yourself from fractures. Last week I wiped out twice commuting. Before xmas another wipeout (that time some ache that took a while to cure). As a kid several times per ride and no fractures. More falls less fractures. You should be less proficient at keeping upright I guess... =)

You are 100% correct. I am 44 and been riding all my life (mainly MX) and for the last year I have been suffering quite bad with neck pain and pain between the shoulder blades to the point where my left arm is completely numb and very painful. 3 MRI's show I have 2 discs which are pretty much collapsed and this is the result of years and years of riding with that exact posture you explained in your vid. I can still ride but I am working so hard to try and change my style more to the style you suggested which is so hard after riding all my life with the incorrect posture its so hard to change. I think riding schools really need to educate everyone about this as we may all suffer from this in the future and trust me it aint pleasant. Great video , we should all be teaching our kids who ride this correct technique.

Listen to the words of advice!!! I'm 50 and have chronic neck pain from years of Downhill/freeride Mt biking, snowmobiling and Moto. Lots of crashes haven't helped, but be aware of your body position ALWAYS. You'll suffer the consequences later in life if you don't. I still ride every weekend, but I have to load up on the ibuprofen before I head out.

A great asset to my program has been the addition of yoga. I do yoga almost every day even for 20 minutes and it has helped. I have struggled with exactly what you described in this video. Yoga focuses a lot on proper posture and caring for the spine. I would definitely give it a try! I am terrible at it, but experienced way less pain and soreness after my last ride.

Your right. 1980 I started riding mx bikes. By 86 I was on a yz80, 15 gallons of gas a week was what I was allowed to burn. I'm 45 years old. My neck is in pain alot, my shoulders are toast, and my hands are numb and feel like they are in a bucket of burning hot water for most of the day, i bet everything you explained has something to do with my pain. I also drive logging trucks for 70 hours a week and 25 years on the road trucking, likely has lots to do with it too. In my day growing up reading every issue of motocross action, Dirk bike, transworld mx, we never had any teaching of proper posture. Thanks for going there.

I would be interested in a video on the type of non-riding training you suggest for becoming a better rider. I understand that to get better you have to just ride more. But i noticed on some of your videos what looks like a crossfit/functional fitness gym in the background. Also you guys convinced me to drop atvs and just put in my time on a dirtbike.

Twice your age. Been riding mx bikes since I was 8, but I still learn a lot from this channel. I was never a pro and honestly (hate to admit since a lot of self image depend on my bikes) bikes isn''t where I'm most proficient. Appreciate you using your own situation and exposing vulnerability, in order to teach good things. Hope you get better and well. In my humble opinion, health superseeds anything else. I agree 100% that keeping fit for interacting with your son is everything. It's actually about being a good role model. He needs you to be better than him before h reach his peak. You need to be easily able to kick his ass before 15-18 in anything.

I notice improper foot position all the time after learning correct position myself. Riders usually point their toes out to avoid brake lever and shifters but should be on the balls of their feet. Even do this when riding in the pits to train your muscle memory. Made biggest difference for me riding.
I always have to focus on the track keeping my hips unlocked and back straight. When I do, I immediately feel more control and stronger core, but it’s easy to forget. Thanks for the tips!!

Hello mate, I allot older than you, I'm 56 and just getting back into riding after a 35 year hiatus.
I have been weights for the past year and lots of flexibility work. But one of the best exercises that has helped me the most is neck training. I use a neck harness and attach weights and do sets
It's amazing the difference I feel, my neck is so dam stong now.
Wall slides are great too as you know, along with the floor exercises shown on your show.
I promise if you incorporate some weight training you will not know your self.
I have scoliosis and herniated discs and kyphosis but with implementing everything mentioned above you won't know your self.
    Good luck with everything.

@@GDUBMX Push upps (vary wide, narrow) and pull upps are grate for sholders. Doing them slow and controled is good. Slow push upps (5/10sek down and 5/10sek upp give a good core too!)
      Burpes, squats ect are good.
Maybe sqeez a boll between your knees when doing sqats.
Never seen the point in curls tho.. You ride the bike with your legs, core and sholders. Not your biseps ;)
