Its definitely humbling. I just got my purple belt not even a week ago and I’m definitely feeling like I don’t deserve it. And I’m sure my team mates are silently judging.. But, I know that my coach wouldn’t award it to me if I didn’t truly earn it. I just have to prove it to myself by working harder than before.
I competed in a tournament last week as well.. I had to prove it to myself that I could do it. And I ended up winning gold. I had to overcome the fear of losing, lack of self confidence and getting humiliated like I did so many years ago before I had an actual team behind me. It felt good to show my coach that the time he invested in me was not wasted. And it also felt good to come home and show my children that yes, you can do it if you are willing to put in the work and put yourself out there. I love Jiu jitsu and all of its wild ups and downs.

Some of us just aren't good and get promoted. Instructors can be wrong. They aren't infallible

0:37 i was the opposite. Didnt deserve it then. Been getting the shit kicked outta me every roll even when I got it. I sucked. Never improved. Went 4 times a week. I didnt deserve it and it has been hard to uphold the rank with a straight face when you can see that your opponents and partners expect more or assume you're a beast on the mat and you aren't.
It saved me in the streets but I've lost every tournament match I've saved up and paid to compete in. You cant will your way to being good. After 9 years at purple I am even more afraid someone will try and promote me to be kind, and in their mind give me a great moment, not realizing it is destroying my motivation.
1:10 i agree. A reason doesnt mean that the student is a good player. People get honorary doctorates or promoted to black belt posthumously

I think Dunning kruger and imposter syndrome are at the two ends of same spectrum
