I had to quit Boxing and BJJ. Injuries suck at a certain age. Learning to play chess now. 2 years ago I was around 1,000 rating. I just won my first tournament! It was an under 1,700 tournament, but I won it. 68 people. I went 5 wins 2 draws 1 loss. My performance was rated 1815! Now that's not world class, but it felt really good to me. You're right, putting in time and improving feels great. I don't think as much about being better than my opponents as being better than me last week.
Two brilliant communicators that make you want to take on a sport that you have no interest in participating. I think these two are going to be two of the most influential entertainers in shaping our society and God bless them for being honest.
Try it out in your free time. You might like it. Usually, everyone in any martial arts field are good and nice people. It also helps with your mental and physical fitness.
After starting jiu jitsu - I was able to dominate my sobriety, got the motivation to start lifting and running again, I quit cigarettes after 15 years of smoking, and I’m about to fix my diet and quit junk food. All for/because of jiu jitsu. I cannot explain enough on how thankful I am for this martial art.
Jui Jitsu is great, I got my 10yr old into it and he loves it!! A confidence booster and be able to handle yourself was very important for me and for him!!
Man I love the way so many ppl from so many different walks of life are trying and committing themselves to jiu jitsu. Says so much about the nature of the art.
The way Joe describes the feeling and beauty of Jui Jitsu is how I feel about golf. I bet for all of us, the thing we passionately pursue has such a deep meaning. Joe is so good at describing things. These two are some of my favorite people to listen to.
I'm not sure how anything stacks up next to a perfectly flushed 6 iron or the feeling of draining a 35 ft triple breaking snake on the 18th. I've been balls deep in playboy models before and it wasn't even close!! 🤣🤣

Keep training. I'm 53 and been training for nine months. I've cleaned up my alcohol use, lost 27 pounds, and have a better outlook on life. Keep training. We're in this together!
I am 45 and just got my Blue belt after winning a state comp. 1.5 yrs of training 3-4 times a week (Gi and No-Gi). I really had to adjust life outside of BJJ. Started lifting weights, quit drinking alcohol, better sleeping, respected recovering time for minor injuries, eating continuously well, quality supplements, etc. The Blue belt made me stronger outside of the matts. I will keep training and getting stronger. Hopefully one day I will get a Purple belt. Osss
That's great Marco. I've been training for nine months. Man I learned quick to get rid of the booze, the fast food, and late night TV watching. I lift weights twice a week now, I've lost 27 pounds, I stopped eating fast food, I'm no longer attached to drinking, I stretch, and eat quality whole foods and take supplements. I'm 53 and a two stripe white belt. I want to train as long as my body will hold up. I feel great and I feel I finally what ive been looking for since I got out the marine corps 25 years ago. Stay strong and stay motivated. Your friend, Eddie. Woodstock, Georgia
“ the difference between when I was a purple belt vs black belt is I learned more trained more and got better” think that pretty much sums up every level of advancement in every aspect of life lol
No, there is a distinct difference between purple belt and blue belt. The difference is less notable between other belts...that's what he is trying to convey I think.
The thing is, when you are a white belt you just do everything wrong by instinct, when you are a blue belt you have mastered the very basic techniques and dont do dumb mistakes anymore, but you also dont have a game of your own, at purple belt you have your game, your sweeps, the submissions and the set ups to it, the details in the moves... you basically know a lot already, it takes 5 years to be a purple belt its more time than to get a degree
Nearing my black belt and for the longest time I always knocked myself down because I trained so long that I began to think my partners were regular people. This segment really gave me a good boost!
started jiu jitsu 2 weeks ago at 34. Loving it so far and Joe Rogan is right about the full blast thing. Its so great to come home from BJJ and know my "rage tank" is empty. Unlike in previous striking sports where I was always left wondering if I could have done more.
My Brazilian ju jutsi story: I am a 6’2” 280 pounds overall good shape black guy white belt. One of my sparring/ rolling partner was a 5’6” 140 pound white guy name Chris. ( a purple belt) “Chris” for 6 months will routinely whipped my ass every single day. No matter what I did he had an answer for it. It was so frustrating because I just couldn’t understand. I had nightmare about it. Also to make it worse…….. he was so NICE!!!!. The kindest/sincere person I ever met. The day I was able to finally make him tap was like the top 5 moment in my life. I literally took a month to plan and strategize a sequence to beat him. Once I made him tap I scream of pure joy. The whole gym stop and starting laughing and giving me props. (My struggle against “chris” was the gym running joke) It took a few months before I regular hold my own against him. (Not due to skills but my size and strength started to play a much bigger factor than before. )
I'm 42 years old and just got my Purple belt. I had been a blue belt since 2015, had some off time due to injuries, and had to change schools after the plandemic. It's been a crazy ride.
29. I got my blue belt in 2016. I fucked around with traveling, girls, etc. I have seen the entire USA. I got back into training and have taken 4 MMA fights. I thought this life was lost to me. Got promoted to purple belt 1/18/25. Absolutely the most surreal life experience. It was like a stamp on the end of this time where I had been searching for myself and returned back to what I already knew I loved. Life is odd lol.
I feel like Joe should introduce Russell Brand to Duncan Trussell, I feel like they would get along beautifully. I can even see a podcast on the future: Tin Foil: with Russell and Trussell.
Joe been training in BJJ since before I was born.... I started last OCT and got my first stripe recently. Love the art of folding (or getting folded) clothes with people still in them. Its helped me in more ways than one.
Cracks me up that 20+ years ago they used to say the only difference between a really good blue belt and a blackbelt is the bluebelt has to think about their setups and its second nature for the blackbelt. Now it's apparently purplebelt. Stuck on the bottom in "suckville" is a horrible feeling for the first few months to years.
Especially 2day it used 2 be like u grew up in rough neighborhoods and got in fights and learned 2 handle yourself but now some person that looks like they lived a privileged life could break your arm... in any case some1 from the streets won't back down and come back methodical
I don't know why it took me so long to appreciate jiu-jitsu, but at 44, I would absolutely love to join a gym. I've watched a lot of tutorials and learned quite a few moves at this point, but that only goes so far. My little 3-year-old rolling partner has been a champ, but it's time for me to take it to the next level. She's too little to practice heel hooks on.
White belt: Initiate/Youngling Blue Belt: Padawan Purple Belt: Jedi Knight Brown Belt: Jedi Specialist (Sage, Sentinel, etc.) Black Belt: Jedi Master May the Force be with you all. - Jared, Jedi Knight
That’s funny he mentioned a guy 140 lbs. could get over on you, he’s absolutely right. It happens often in today’s world. Never underestimate your opponent!
@@rayshamrock "never" is a little harsh but its incredibly unlikely. I am 250 and I can make smaller guys tap without even using actual moves tbh.. just lean on their ribcage in the right way or push an elbow into their neck and they tap...
GD, so much fun listening to Joe talk about that dude on the street, today you have no idea what he could do to you, given UFC. Russel Brand is too funny too, GREAT EPISODE.
I'm a white belt, and all the purple belts kick my butt.... I've embraced the grind, and uncomfortable positions, and so far in the last couple weeks, I've submitted three almost four blue belts, and a 10 month white belt who competes. I just set goals, one is to submit every blue belt. I compare being smashed or smothered, to being drowned in water.
I started late. 55 yo. Did it for about 1 and a half years before Covid shut down my gym. There were a fair amount of injuries, but I value the training I had highly. I advanced quickly because of my TKD and boxing experience. Not that striking related to any of the BJJ skills, but I knew what to expect discipline-wise. The experience was humbling and empowering at different times. But it totally helped my confidence in striking. Less fear of take downs, not feeling totally helpless on the ground, etc.
@@jorichter4870 No. And it was and continues to be a tough choice. I play music professionally. The grind and occasional injuries interfere with that. My fingers were always sore , which interfered with my playing, never mind the other occasional injuries. I just train solo at this point. Weights, kicking and punching, as well as some BJJ drills which I have incorporated into my routine.
EB is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and talkin about it on Joe Rogan Experience Fun fact: I am turning 21 next Friday and I am a 4 stripe white belt I hope to get my blue belt soon 🤘🏼🤘🏼
The problem is the more people learn these things then the higher the bar needs to be raised out in the streets. Someone with bad intentions instead of using their fists in the past is now going to use a knife or gun if they think people know martial arts. It's all BS, Just do it to keep fit but don't expect to stop a bullet, What works in the ring doesn't always work out on the streets.
Weird to think Russel Brand could strangle the life out of most of us with ease, if you don't practice bjj you would be as helpless as a toddler to him
@@studiomonster-c9l clearly you've never rolled with old men who are purple belt and up. Old man strength IS a thing you know? Get on the mat some time, learn to be humble, Russell Brand would absolutely hammer you like the little nail you would be on the mat 😂
Am 2 years in and still on my white with 4 stripes! Chasing my blue belt but Flying in Flying out work gets in the way, smash the hours when I can. I'll get there, and keep going
I'm 48 and and three weeks ago I started BJJ. It was an academy under Lupito Gracias , he told me that he is the long distance cousin from Mexico from the guys in Brazil. That is what he told me. I was amazed how lucky I was when he asked me for a year of classes payment in advance and he would throw a brown belt with it. The only thing is after I paid and I went back next day, the place has been closed. I'm sure is for some minor repairs, but I am confident Lupito Gracias will take me to mastery and at some point he will mail me my brown belt. Still waiting.
Wish what he said about purple belts was true, so many just get one for hanging around long enough and paying fees. martial arts is mainly business now.
I'm still a pretty new blue belt, and the idea of being good enough to earn a purple belt is completely baffling to me. Like how will I possibly get that good? It feels like I climbed up a wall and once I finally got to the top the next wall is 5x taller

The more I find out about Russell Brand and the "drug" challenges he has overcome, the more I respect him
After starting jiu jitsu - I was able to dominate my sobriety, got the motivation to start lifting and running again, I quit cigarettes after 15 years of smoking, and I’m about to fix my diet and quit junk food.
Hell yeah! It’s like how I am with porn, weed, chicken nuggets. Passionate!
I'm not sure how anything stacks up next to a perfectly flushed 6 iron or the feeling of draining a 35 ft triple breaking snake on the 18th. I've been balls deep in playboy models before and it wasn't even close!! 🤣🤣
A man who knows the way in one thing, can see the way in all things- paraphrased
I just wish golf was something that didn’t cost thousands of dollars and could be played more than 4 months out of the year like Jui Jitsu.
@Axe2Grind yeah, depending on where someone lives, it could be really restrictive with snow.
I’m 54 and just started my BJJ journey 3days ago. I had a blast a my first class, been really sore for the past couple days, can’t wait to go in Monday, I’m actually excited to go!
drink liquid IV and pickles to help with body cramps. have a blast
I started BJJ two months ago at 57. I love it, but walking in to something so new and different is really a confidence booster.
Any advice or recommendations for starting BJJ at 57?
“ the difference between when I was a purple belt vs black belt is I learned more trained more and got better” think that pretty much sums up every level of advancement in every aspect of life lol
Yup
No, there is a distinct difference between purple belt and blue belt. The difference is less notable between other belts...that's what he is trying to convey I think.
Once you hit purple you're at the top of the mountain and can see the summit and just have to keep going. That's the point he's making.
@@adamw1555yeah I got to where blue belts at my weight, I could steamroll (as a white belt), but purple was a whole other monster. Still is....
Enhancing your warrior energy. Love it
I just started at 39. I’m injured all the time but I’m losing weight and getting stronger and learning to frame well. I absolutely love it!
Nearing my black belt and for the longest time I always knocked myself down because I trained so long that I began to think my partners were regular people. This segment really gave me a good boost!
Brand is a purple belt?! I did BJJ and purple belt is legit...you don't wanna mess with purple belts
Blue belt is enough against a guy on the Street
Being 126kg beats a purple belt all day long !
@@7th.trumpet not a 126kg purple belt tho.

@@7th.trumpet not true at all
40 yr old purple belt since this past Monday!!! 🟪🟪◼️🟪🟪
started jiu jitsu 2 weeks ago at 34. Loving it so far and Joe Rogan is right about the full blast thing. Its so great to come home from BJJ and know my "rage tank" is empty. Unlike in previous striking sports where I was always left wondering if I could have done more.
My Brazilian ju jutsi story:
I am a 6’2” 280 pounds overall good shape black guy white belt. One of my sparring/ rolling partner was a 5’6” 140 pound white guy name Chris. ( a purple belt)
“Chris” for 6 months will routinely whipped my ass every single day.
(My struggle against “chris” was the gym running joke)
It took a few months before I regular hold my own against him. (Not due to skills but my size and strength started to play a much bigger factor than before. )
Congrats dude 👍🏼
How long does it take to get to Black guy white belt?
@@mufcok2148 😂😂😂
Skin color wasn’t relevant but nice job
Thats awesome dude, such a cool story! xD
Two of my favourite guys talking about one of my favourite things
"and sometimes part of me still holds on to the idea of not being crushed under someone's shoulder"
God I felt that.
Russell Brand is a well articulated person. Enjoy listening to him talk, its modern day poetry.
Theyve been on eachothers podcasts and they were great
Joe been training in BJJ since before I was born.... I started last OCT and got my first stripe recently. Love the art of folding (or getting folded) clothes with people still in them. Its helped me in more ways than one.
Love too see Joe and Russell hug it out ju jitsu style on the studio floor !!!!
Cracks me up that 20+ years ago they used to say the only difference between a really good blue belt and a blackbelt is the bluebelt has to think about their setups and its second nature for the blackbelt.
Now it's apparently purplebelt.
Stuck on the bottom in "suckville" is a horrible feeling for the first few months to years.
love these 2 together
All you need is money to have quality friends. I wish I had friends like these!
Great 👍🏼 discussion - very inspiring - almost 57, restarted at 49, old 3 stripe purple…
Could listen to Joe talk about bjj for hours
Especially 2day it used 2 be like u grew up in rough neighborhoods and got in fights and learned 2 handle yourself but now some person that looks like they lived a privileged life could break your arm... in any case some1 from the streets won't back down and come back methodical
Something about greener grass...
Joe is a wonderful advocate for bjj. I am 60 and I plan to join the club in my area in Birmingham England
Do it bud. Fair play to you
Did you do it. I'm 41 and am nervous to try.
I've never loved a clip more in my life.
I started a year ago and I’m 39. It’s been a real experience haha
You just realised your gay, that's why
Too funny……!
Naw heel hook teach her not be too cute lol
They're *never* too young to practice heel hooks on...or too old...ask my disabled grandma...
White belt: Initiate/Youngling
Blue Belt: Padawan
Purple Belt: Jedi Knight
Brown Belt: Jedi Specialist (Sage, Sentinel, etc.)
Black Belt: Jedi Master
May the Force be with you all.
- Jared, Jedi Knight
i think jedi master would be red belt
Started back at karate at 41 and starting jiu jitsu tonight at age 45. One belt away from black in karate. Just start!
I just turned 100 and I’ve been doin jiu jitsu for almost 3 hrs now. It changed my life

“My competence inhales and exhales” what a beautiful way to put it
Love these two ❤🙏🇬🇧🌈🍀🥷
That’s funny he mentioned a guy 140 lbs. could get over on you, he’s absolutely right. It happens often in today’s world. Never underestimate your opponent!
140 lbs on a 100lbs sure, but never would a 140lb man win vs. a 270lb man. Never.

GD, so much fun listening to Joe
talk about that dude on the street,
today you have no idea what he could
do to you, given UFC. Russel Brand is too
funny too, GREAT EPISODE.
I started BJJ at age 42, never had a martial arts background only lifted weights and I love it!
Good luck on your journey! Did you start again now?
@@jorichter4870
No.
Got purple belt 2 yrs ago. I stopped training due to injury. Recently gone back training after 2 yrs out,
BJJ is amazing, started about a year ago and never looked back
I just turned 69 and I’m a one stripe white belt everything is sore but bjj saved my life
nice
EB is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and talkin about it on Joe Rogan Experience
Fun fact: I am turning 21 next Friday and I am a 4 stripe white belt I hope to get my blue belt soon 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Jui Jitsu is like shooting. Everyone can shoot but not everyone is world class
The average guy doing jiu jitsu is not doing it because they want to fight criminals in the streets lmao. Its a hobby.
Any videos of Russell rolling
Just got my purple belt two months ago. Love BJJ. Joe hit the nail on the head!!!!!
Russel is a purple belt? Holy shit well done Russel! 💚✌️
The center pad on Joe’s headphones is NEVER centered and it absolutely drives me crazy! 😭
Much Admiration
I’m 40 got my first class this weekend
Weird to think Russel Brand could strangle the life out of most of us with ease, if you don't practice bjj you would be as helpless as a toddler to him
He probably sucks, bro. He's an old man.

Love this 🙌🏻
I’m 19 and have been in it for about a month. Fell in love with it
I got my purple belt last year and I am 45! I compete and love it! 🙏🏽
Whenever a celebrity gets a belt Im always a little skeptical lol
Where's the footage of him rolling?
Also if you look at the time it takes to get a purple belt in BJJ it is sort of equivalent to black belt in most classical martial arts…
awesome, inspiring.
I can't seem to find this episode, is it on Spotify ? What episode # is it ?
Just started BJJ yesterday at 96. Only weigh 130. Been at it for 3 weeks. Sore all over but I know I'll be a jiu jituero for life. Oss.
Good job!
Wish what he said about purple belts was true, so many just get one for hanging around long enough and paying fees. martial arts is mainly business now.
Keep rolling 👍
I watch all the UFC fights so I'm pretty much a BJJ purple belt too.
36 had my first lesson last night, I'll check back in if i ever get to purple.
I'm still a pretty new blue belt, and the idea of being good enough to earn a purple belt is completely baffling to me. Like how will I possibly get that good?
It feels like I climbed up a wall and once I finally got to the top the next wall is 5x taller
Just keep learning and putting in the work...it'll come.
I really liked BJJ, i trained for a few months but too many injuries in the nexk and back for me to go back. At 37 the injuries are not Worth it
I’m 23 and got my purple belt this past weekend 🫡🇧🇷🇬🇹
Reading the comments in this video also show how much of a community BJJ is/can be.
