It took me a few months to grow into my Blue belt. I still got the snot beat out of me from everyone, especially bigger, stronger, faster 2-4 stripe White belts. Being a much smaller person (5'5, 130lbs., thin frame, strong and wiry build, 43 years old) instead of trying to out-grapple everyone, I made the absolute best progress when I started to focus mainly on controlling people, defending and escaping from bad positions, weathering the storm of their aggression and attack relentlessly when they're gassed out. I've had a lot of success since the change. Roughly a year as a Blue belt.
I follow lots of Jiu Jitsu channels and I started on this one 2 days ago. Proper, deep, well thought out discussions..the best I’ve seen. Well done! The whole idea of bettering yourself through Jiu Jitsu is a concept that has always existed in Japanese martial arts in particular(I don’t have experience in other traditions). It’s called Dō as in Karate-Do, Ju-do, Aiki-Do, Miyagi-do 😂 etc etc. It means `the way’ and is a way of seeing the art as not only a fighting system but as a way of life.
Feel this immensely. Been a brown belt for 5 yrs going on 6 and I still don't think I deserve it. I had to deal serious low back injuries, life and family priorities in general, and it seems that I've regressed every time I get back on the mat. Getting back there is my only small victory.
Fantastic episode guys!!! 2 stripe blue belt here in Michigan USA. Always feel the imposter syndrome no matter what phase I’m in. I do find it motivates me to learn more to prove I’m worth my rank.
I’m a three stripe blue, coach told me to compete at blue while I can. And said do it before June. Well that tells me purple is coming, but like you guys are saying, I don’t feel like I’m there. I roll with purple belts all the time and man… I get smoked. Granted, those boys have 80+ pounds and lots of experience over me.. but I don’t feel like I’m even close to that.
People only see how good those higher belts are on the mat. They don't see the notes, research, tears, and emotion it took for them to get to that point. I feel like everyone goes through this of you train long enough
Great episode guys! I'm a calm looking guy on the outside but like JT there's this sense of anxious urgency within me that's constantly nagging at me to do more faster (or to just give up otherwise). Just being "calm" is also one of my primary goals from practicing Jiu-jitsu which has had a huge impact on both the personal and professional aspects of my life. Thanks again for th great content. I started following you guys for the mobility exercises but I'm staying not only for those but for the honest and insightful conversations!
I'm feeling this pretty hard right now. 4 stripe white and everyone whose my peer is getting promoted to blue and they all keep hinting at me.... Its a weird feeling haha just wish I could ignore and get on with training without it being in the back of my head
Boys love your podcast keeps me going through work, it’s nice that it’s not super fucking serious all the time either! Both work really good together. Don’t know if you guys take requests but I’m gonna fire one in there 🤣 How much do you both structure your training for jits, in terms of deliberate practise etc etc? Personally it’s really helped me but I’m new so kinda doesn’t count, do we all just end up at the top of the mountain anyway or is it only the ones with a map 👌🏼
Blue belt impostor syndrome is real because your intelligence and senses dont lie to you. You feel like you dont deserve it because you really dont deserve it.BJJ is so much a bussiness that belts have to be given. And most of the times they are given too quick or just for attendance. Who really wants to become good they will at one point and will never care what color is the belt but this small number of people dont bring enough money in for bussiness to keep going. So if you feel that you dont deserve it then it might be that you just dont deserve it .
If I shoot this 3pt scrunched up paper ball into that bin I’m going to be successful at “X” Nek minute you miss and immediately have internal voice say nah didn’t mean shit 🤣👌

thanks so much! good to have you here, sir.
Ayeee!
I feel this. I don’t deserve my white belt. 😂
hahahahahah : )
Im getting my purple this week. Should I intentionally dominate all the blues and whites preemptively? "Get them before they get me" idea?
I think this is a smart. You need to send a message.
Hell yes!

keep doing your thing!
It’s well worth getting competition in at earlier belts.

great point Derrick. It's a long ass road, and a belt only really tells part of the story. appreciate the comment brother
Skip the commercial. Video starts at 2:15

Enjoy the anticipation! Once you do get your blue belt you won’t taste that feeling again for quite some time.

As the old saying goes, comparison is the thief of all joy.
