My unsolicited advice with a 8 and 10 year old in bjj is to not push them. If they have a bad day or are just not feeling it, we skip a class. But I remind them that it’s a life skill like learning to swim

It’s really not that hard to understand. When you nurture someone from their earliest stages of life it’s natural to have a lot of overwhelming feelings when they accomplish something/ make you proud. I can imagine that it also reminds you of your younger days as well. Not much of a crier myself but when I have a kid and they graduate I can guarantee there’ll be a tear at my eye when I think about all the growing they’ve done.

That’s so awesome as a father of 2 daughters myself. I was only able to get my oldest on the mats with me for a short while, as her true passion was competitive cheer, but man she was a sponge. Her flexibility and ability to retain body motions after only being shown once was amazing to watch as a father. And it was a great feeling to watch my mat brothers take her under their wing like a room full of uncles. She still reflects fondly of her time on the mats as well. I’ll probably never get her back in there seriously but possibly some Saturday open mats to keep her mind sharp. I can only imagine the happiness filling his heart as he was able to tell her story and promote her like that, absolutely awesome!

I have two girls. Both young and I am 52. I started a couple years ago and it is amazing. I have learned so much about myself. It is eye opening and life changing.

Jiu-jitsu is starting to turn into this weird cult that other martial arts don't have.

Do you even know what qualifies a cult?
      Probably not.
This is nowhere near what an actual cult is.. but i dont expect you to know that jackie chan.

Jiu Jitsu is the most important thing you can give to your kids Jocko? It's great, but there are more important things in the grand scheme of life.

Damned Jocko iam trying to look tuff here but this brings tears to my eyes. My son started at the age of 4 and is loving it ever since. My daughter just quit Jiu Jitsu because of work school and time with friends she is 16 now i hated that decision but she will be back after her grades are getting better. But i agree it is the best gift from a parent to their children. 🙏 congratulations to your daughter brother

You are to be humble in life. You are not suppose to have pride in your heart. You can be proud of your accomplishments and those of your children. These are very separate things. Jocko knows this and exemplifies these traits. God bless.
