Saw this product on the 150 in the outback equipment event last Saturday. I thought it was a new rocksliders from Kaon. Then Tin told us it was a prototype side step with water tank. KAON innovation is top notch!
Kaon, always coming up with the best ideas and the most thought through designs. Example the recovery points, they make use of the factory points for improved strength; great idea.
Such a great innovation. My 2021 Prado came with a Hayman Reece towbar which meant I could not use your standard tank. I was considering selling this one and installing a genuine Toyota bar just so I could fit the Kaon tank - but now I am thinking I don't have to with these side tanks!!! Watching this space with great interest. Very happy to be a guinea pig if required.
Thanks Anthony! It's early days and these are very much a concept product, it'll be interesting to see how they go through research and development, and whether it's viable for them to push forward into coming to market.
+1 for the 120 brigade. One for cooking and one for washing sounds like a good idea. Especially if someone has a shower awning set up on one side. Surely it would be simple to run water straight to a shower head.
@@KAONaust have you considered a rear base for wagons that has build it Unistrut and flush new floor. Would help with installs, but would really help with removing components to transform the space to whatever the vehicle is used for, could flow onto a complete storage quick release system that could be removed or installed as quick as taking shopping out of the boot.
What you're touching on is something that has been thrown about our concept boards for next years projects, we think there's huge merit in a concept like this.
Make a great fuel tank, use them on long journey and topup main tank. Most fuel tanks are 70ltr plus your 60 nearly doubles range. If you light 4x4 these would be ideal.
Such a cool product. So many great ideas never make it to the prototype or production phase but you guys are doing it! These remind me of fuel tanks on large trucks like Ken worth etc which often have steps in them also, just wayy lower profile.
Thanks for the kind words! It’s been great to test out some concepts and even if they don’t make final production, the learnings from going through the physical prototyping process have been immensely valuable. 😊
Love the idea. I would definitely use for drinking water. I have just recently bought and installed Ocam side steps. At the time I thought 'I wish KAON made side steps'. And having them as a decent size water tank is a terrific innovation. I'd be happy to use them as independent water tanks. I think a balance pipe might be problematic, particularly risk of damage and then loosing water from both tanks.
This kind of feedback honestly makes our day - that customers think of us when they come across other challenges we don't cater for. Thanks for the feedback too, it's genuinely great to hear how people might use them.
I love the idea! Will they be strong enough to jack from? I'd definitely be keen on getting a set if they were solid enough to use as sliders and as a jacking point for a Hi-Lift.
Kaon i love your work! Very cool idea! Main concern would be damage on tracks bit i guess you will be doing enough testing. I wish you did more products for the 90 series prado and i understand theyre older but still heaps of them out there! I have actually installed your 150 rear door table on my 90 and it worked an absolute treat👌 I had a 3mm sheet of ally cut to the same size as the door card and then carefully lined up the holes from the door card and then used nutserts on the holes on the door. Then attached the table brackets to the ally sheet and it fits like a dream. One of the best mods ive done and also one of the less painful ones! It only took twice as long as i thought it would as opposed to the usual factor of 5 🤣😂😅
Another innovative creation. Great design. I hope you bring this time of mindset when you start creating 80 Series specific products. Potential name for this product could be the "KAON Water Wings". 😁
Thank you! We try to bring it to everything we do, but the most important part of tackling concepts like this is the learnings, which definitely flow onto other vehicles and just about everything we do.
Hey there! We have recently added an additional valve to our rear mount tanks as a second failsafe for users overfilling them. These water tanks are only concept at present, but if they went into production, they'd receive the same treatment.
A lot of testing to go before we bring therm to market, but the general thinking is they'd more be for a touring / overlanding use than hardcore off-road work.
The 30L rear tank doesn't, sorry. As for the side steps, at the moment they're just a concept prototype, so we don't have any specifics on it's application yet!
The 30L Rear underbody tank doesn't work with the flat tailgate, sorry! The other tanks are currently concept products, so it's hard to say at present.
Water Wings - you know it makes sense! A question though: what happens if you collect a bump on the step? Will the load pass through to the tank and potentially pop a seam losing the water from that side?
These would definitely be designed to be steps, not sliders. They do sit up higher than the cross-member and fuel tank, but if you had ended up off-camber there is a chance they would be in the firing line. From our experience, our tanks can take quite an impact (we've had people do worse to our Rear 30L Tank), but we wouldn't be recommending them for hardcore offroading, more touring.
I also installed a Safiery ultrasonic water meter, its sends a 0-5v signal to my Simarine and can be calibrated to show 0-30l in .1 increments (120 series, so I got the long ranger) - those extra tanks are perfect, I like to keep my Prado tank for pure drinking water only filled at home so I know it can't be contaminated easily, my caravan tanks I fill anywhere as that's used mostly for washing up and showering
With the plumbing of the level sender and pump, could we have the option of that already being installed by you guys and the customer just sorting out the electrical side when it gets to them?
Perhaps! These are all things we would need to work out. There's also the matter of transit as well - they aren't small! Nothing impossible but all things we'll work through if they make it past being a concept prototype and into production.
Hey there! Tin mentions it briefly in the video, about 29kg a side. When you consider the weight of standard side steps at about 25kg, it's not bad for the additional water storage.
nice, I have a 7litre alloy air tank mounted where those new water tanks mount on my 120, its a great use of simple area that's got a bit of space. One water one air tank would be ideal.
Thanks for the kind words! We haven't explored other models yet, this one is purely a concept prototype for testing and feedback before we decide whether it comes to market.
Outstanding! Looking forward to seeing the final product. What do you envisage regarding paint finish and perhaps will you add anti-slip rubber on the surface? I would use it for drinking water and with the rear tank, it means I can stop trying to work out how to take an extra 100litres of water with me on the big trips (I was originally thinking of a bladder until this genius invention came along). KAON being awesome again!
Thanks so much for the feedback on how you might use it, it's genuinely helpful for us to hear firsthand from customers. As for the finish, we've got anti-slip covered, but you'll just have to stay tuned! ;)
The new water tank steps look interesting. Will keep a watch out to see how these end up Is there any chance of increasing the thickness in the existing tank where the level tubes get screwed in, as the plate seems a little thin for a taper fitting
Thanks Mark! Glad to hear we piqued your interest. Lots of testing and trialling happening with these ones. The standard tank is 1.6mm stainless - we've not had an issue with it in the past, but we'll pass the feedback onto our R&D team for consideration too.
Wow. European Prados don’t have any space for the standard KAON underbody water tank, because there is the spear wheel (not on the rear door as in Australia). Therefore I would order the water steps straight ahead as soon as the are on the market
At the moment these are very much still a concept prototype, but if they make it through testing into production we'll be looking at other vehicles, the LC would definitely be on the list.
Kaon Atlantis side steps 😉 I mean water sliders would work too 😅, can’t wait to get some of these, I have a flat tailgate so would be prime to store some water when I can’t use your other tank tie to my spare wheel location
I was just thinking today I wish there were more options for under car storage. I have a Pajero Sport which has curves in all the wrong places, so would love to have 70l water to be stored outside of the cabin space. Any more and it might be too heavy, but for touring that is a great size. It can be good to have the two sides seperate so that if one tank leaks, you still have another side full of water. I always make sure I have multiple water sources just in case something happens.
Hi Love your products! Great engineering. Just a little "heads-up" on the mounting solution for this one. Maybe you have it all sorted and are aware, but anyway. I live in Sweden and have the 2.8 diesel (2016) with the much (incl me) hated Ad-Blue solution. When I mounted a pair of US made rocksliders I had issues on fitting it at the driver side (left here in Europe) where it is supposed to bolt to the frame. Because we have the Ad-Blue crap here there was a control unit and part of a massive cable set bolted and protected on the side of the outside of the frame. As they didn't have that on the GX460 in the US, which was the actual car my rock sliders was designed to fit I had an issue. I don't think you have the Ad-Blue on the same model Prado in the AU, but just wanted to mention it as you have customers from everywhere. Maybe have a check on this potential issue for this product, and the mounting of it to the frame? Or mention something on the upcoming product page when on sale, that it does (or doesn't) fit the cars with Ad-Blue. Cheers
Thanks for the heads up! These are still very much a concept prototype and not yet green-lit for production - we have a lot of testing to do - but we appreciate insight like this into markets that aren't familiar to us. Will pass it on to our R&D team, just in case they aren't aware.
These are great !! Are steps strong enough to be used a Rock Sliders too? And would the stock side step lights still work? Joining the side tanks to the back tank could be cool too!?
The use case would very much be for touring vehicles, they are not designed or intended to be a rock slider. There might be scope for an option featuring the steps without tanks, in which case they might be a little bit more akin to a slider. The plumbing is an interesting one! Tin has really put his all into making using the tanks as seamless as possible, which we'll cover in a coming episode.
We'll cover plumbing in a couple of episodes, but Tin has worked tirelessly to make what he came up with for this vehicle as seamless as possible. It's pretty good! You'll have to stay tuned ;)
You never know! These are definitely a concept at the moment, but if we do bring them to market we're sure that the Hilux would be a great contender for them.
Hard to say at present as these are a concept product! Would imagine that should they make it to market in future, we'd need to look into this to help advise customers - a valid concern.
They're surprisingly robust, but as you point out these are side steps. The use case would very much be for touring vehicles, as they are not designed or intended to be a rock slider.
@@KAONaust okay we’re on the same page, definitely worth clearing up they are a side step and not a rock slider. Awesome idea for the long range tourer 👍
Gee you beat me by 16 minutes! I was also going to say 'Water Slides' but only if they can work as a rock slider too - which looks likely, except for the potential to split at the seam weld? Otherwise I'd go with Tin's Water Steps idea.
@@KAONaustI think that a poll for the best name from what you think is good. it would also be a little bit of extra promotion of the new product and for extra engagement Kaon merchandise up for grabs. PS Love the Kaon microfiber cloth map it's excellent for cleaning the sunglasses.
PLEASE tell me you are working on water storage for 200s? there must have been thousands of rear bars sold Kaymar, etc over the years - I have a big hole where the spare tyre used to go - would love 50litres or something like that underneath.
The 200 is a tricky one - we like to try and make it work for factory spare configurations, but the rear bar market is still a very valid one. The team do have their sights set on more 200 gear this year!
KAON Touring Steps + Belly Tanks Opt. Bummer coz I just installed the Donaldsons. This idea as always very considered and the old ‘two use saying in full swing. Kaon Innovation! Question- could one or both be used for fuel?
Love the naming options. Don't be too bummed, the Donaldsons are a great step, and these may not make it to market just yet! They're very much still a concept at the moment.

We'll cover plumbing in a couple of episodes, but Tin has worked tirelessly to make what he came up with for this vehicle as seamless as possible. It's pretty good! You'll have to stay tuned ;)
@@KAONaust Thanks for the reply
If you sell this rear tank as a kit with the level meter and everything, ill happily buy it complete. Amazing idea. This would be Kaon item 6.
Thank you! Glad to hear it.
Jesus Rails - walking on water...
Seriously though love to see these types of inovstion from Aussie companies!
Thank you, appreciate the kind words!
Make 'em for the 200 please, if there is space!!
G'day Tin, love your concept. What about the N70 Hilux side steps, they may have a similar bracket foot print. Cheers, keep up the great work!!.
You never know! These are definitely a concept at the moment, but if we do bring them to market we're sure that the Hilux would be a great contender for them.
Pajero water storage would be amazing!
Definitely! We haven't got Pajero on the list at the moment for water, but we're always listening to demand.
I'll add my support for Pajero solutions!@@KAONaust
amazing. make it for the lc300
300 would be a prime candidate for sure!
Would love a set of the water tanks but i have ARB brush bars would there ever be a possibility of being able to integrate them into your steps?
Hard to say at present as these are a concept product! Would imagine that should they make it to market in future, we'd need to look into this to help advise customers - a valid concern.
Thanks for the reply. Would love to add them to the kaon collection haha
Will the tanks not buckle if you smash the side steps though?
They're surprisingly robust, but as you point out these are side steps. The use case would very much be for touring vehicles, as they are not designed or intended to be a rock slider.
@@KAONaust okay we’re on the same page, definitely worth clearing up they are a side step and not a rock slider. Awesome idea for the long range tourer 👍
I knew there was some secret sauces brewing in the Kaon kitchen when I saw there was no side steps on the 150 Prado project
You were on to us! ;)
Any chance that this will fit a 120 please.
At the moment these are just a concept product, so we can't say! If they make it through R&D to production and hit the market, we'll have more info.
Great idea. I’d consider calling them STEP2O or H2STEP
Saddle tanks?
Great minds! Tin had this one on his brainstorming list.
@@KAONaust …while you’re at it, one for the short bus (FJ Cruiser) would be an insta-buy for me 😊
Y62 next please 🙏🏼
Send the water to the rear tank. 100L total. Happy days.
Make your prototype outside window molle panel Joolca compatible, and match the fittings on the tank for a nice shower setup.
You might just have predicted the future there ;)
Water steps !
Aqua Ballast tanks
We asked for names and you guys sure are delivering - thank you!
Are they going to be called:
Slide steps
Water steps
Water slides
Great new idea.
Too many good names!
Donald industries sliders on steroids, love it.
Step tanks or rock tanks
Genius!!
Thank you!
