The song is about Swedish immigrants in USA in the 1800s (I believe either way) a lot of Swedes went there because they were so poor here, only to be poor there too. These particular ones went out to look for gold, and while crossing a desert, one of them drank poisioned water and died. The original story can be seen in the movies Utvandrarna and Nybyggarna (which I highly recommend) and this is from the musical Kristina från Duvemåla that tells the same story. Originally there were 4 books written by Wilhelm Moberg, but if I recall correctly, he wrote a lot in dialect, so those might be a bit hard for you to read.
Short story: No space for farmers sons to get enough inherited land to support a family of their own, along with America being a place where you could get "free" land.
Honestly, I read gone with the with when I was 14 (and English is my second language), so please don't underestimate people's ability to read with accent. But please keep reading! ❤️

I clicked on this video so fast, I've been waiting for this, haha! Love it! And we will not stop bugging you about doing "Du måste finnas" from the same musical, come on man!! it's even better than this one! I know you heard it on morgonpasset a little bit but I KNOW it will be different when you hear it on your own and can focus on it! Hear us out on this please!
This is a deeply tragical and emotional song from the musical Kristina from Duvemåla, based on the literary epic The Emigrants by Swedish author Wilhelm Moberg. The books, the movie and the television series (based on the books), plus the musical are all good but very tragic. It depicts a difficult time in Swedish history when a large part of the population emigrated to the US. A huge plus in the musical, compared to the book and films, is the absolutely fantastic music, created by the geniuses Björn & Benny (Abba) Their brilliant idea to have Peter Jöback, Helen Sjöholm and Anders Ekborg in their respective roles elevated the musical even further. Amazing music, lyrics and voices! This is an absolute classic!
Here is a beautiful recording with a young Peter Jöback from the performance of Kristina in Minnesota, US, for descendants of the emigrants ruclips.net/video/e2tdBKFKOrU/видео.html
I think you should see the movie "Utvandrarna" (from the book of Vilhelm Moberg). Monica Zetterlund is acting with Liv Ullman, Max von Sydow and Allan Edvall). It's about the big Swedish emigration during the 1800 to the USA. This beautiful song is from the musical Kristina från Duvfemåla based on "Utvandrarna". I saw the musical on Cirkus in Stockholm, think it was 2000. Everything was so fantastic, really mindblowing!
@@rickardelimaa OK, I didn't know that. But as Jonathan liked Monica Zetterlund singing I suggested the old movie so he could see her acting as well. ✌
No, the old movie "Utvandrarna" it should be! I think the Swedish is easier to understand than modern version. Back in the days they talked clearly - nowdays I can miss what they are saying, it's blury.
@@rickardelimaa There is a new film which will premiere on 25th of December with Lisa Carlehed and Gustav Skarsgård in the main roles and directed by Erik Poppe. The film will cover all four novels and will focus on Kristina's perspective. Are you sure there will be a TV series?
Jonathan if you read this, I know you said you dont want to react to the same song twice(for obvious reasons), but I think i speak on behalf of most of the other viewers here when I say you should make an exception for the live-performance of "du måste finnas". Helena brings so much raw emotion and power into the song on that live stage which just elevates it to the next level, it's kinda the only way to fully experience the song. Perhaps this could be something you can do on a tuesday night hang.
Peter Jöback is an amazing singer, that's for sure. He's done Phantom of the opera in London and on Broadway, you don't do that if you're just anyone... 😊 You should check out the story behind this musical - the books Utvandrarna, Invandrarna, Nybyggarna and Sista brevet till Sverige by Wilhelm Moberg. There are two movies telling this story as well, very well made. They are about a family, starring the couple Kristina and Karl-Oskar, in the 19th cenury who like many others decide to leave the poor country of Sweden where they are oppressed and starve. They go for America where they've heard that you could get a better life. The younger brother Robert had heard about the Californian gold fields, and as soon as they are settled in their new country, he brings his best friend Arvid and takes off to make the big money. This song is the story Robert tells Kristina when he comes back after several years, alone and as a broken man. This is a very touching story, based on what actually happened to around 1 million swedes who left their country during this time. An important part of history!
Coming from a native Swede, it’s crazy how amazingly you pronounced everything, from his name, the title of the song, and the title of the musical ☺️👏🏻 The ‘å’ and ’ä’ is very difficult to pronounce in the way you did, for non-natives, it’s something you rarely hear from English-speaking people, when they try to speak Swedish 😄 You should also watch the live performance he does, where you get to see a younger version of him singing it
I remember when this musical premiered in Minneapolis. I so wanted to see it, but couldn't afford a ticket (plus I had to work that night). But I loved the books this was based on. I read them all when I was 14. Most of my family was Swedish, and my grandma had all the books.
Love seeing your body language through these classics. Think you would love Jussi Björlings "Till havs". Maybe not a banger, but a holy schmoly kind of voice, he did a lot of opera in the 1940 ies. Enjoy!
Peter has made a Christmas-album. You should do a Christmas special in December and listen to one of his other songs then. Tommy Körberg made a Christmas song that’s called “Julen är här”. I think you would like that one. It’s a duet with a Norwegian singer called Sissel.
This song has been stuck in my head all day because of this channel! 😆 My singing may not be quite the same level as Peters, but I'm working on it! I also got the feeling that I really need to re-read those books, it was too long ago. I don't even think I have them, that must really be arranged! This is an important story and we need to remember these days that only 150-100 years back in time, Sweden was a poor country where people starved. As many as 1,5 million people chose to leave, most of them never to return. "The good old days", huh?
Ouch, this is the first time that your channel made me almost cry. Let me just say that Robert is my favorite character in "Utvandrarna" nowadays. And yeah, this song is just too much for me to handle when I know the full tragedy of his life. It is very interesting that Peter Jöback also voiced Aladdin. Because now I just realized that poor Robert could be seen as the anti-Aladdin, at least if you look at Disney's version of the story. For both of them are teenagers with a lot of potential, that nobody sees just because they belong to the "wrong" social class. But here is the thing. Aladdin is lucky enough to be allowed to defeat Jafar and several other villains, become the local hero, marry a princess and will one day become a sultan. But there was never any lucky break for Robert. Just because his parents were poor farmers who didn't understand him or that he was an intellectual and couldn't/wouldn't let him get an education, his short life was just a waste. Now, some cynic might point out that "Aladdin" is a fairy-tale and "Utvandrarna" is more "realistic". That is maybe true to some extent, but I don't like it when such "realism" is taken too far. Moberg could at least have let Robert become a school teacher for the local Swedish-American children around where Karl Oskar and Kristina settled down. Such a school is mentioned in the books. But no, Moberg had to be a sadsack pessimist and break my heart by giving Robert no happiness at all.
If you like Peter Jöbacks voice - you'd most likely to love Mikael Samuelsson. He - just like Peter Jöback - has played the part of The Phantom in the Phantom of the Opera. And it has been said that even Andrew Lloyd Webber himself thinks Mikael might be the best Phantom ever. Mikael Samuelsson has a big repertoire. Be sure to check out "Fredmans Epistlar" wich is actually music from Swedish composer Carl Michael Bellman
This song gives me chills and tears in the eyes everytime. It's a really sad story and a horrific destiny for many of those looking for happyness in the states back then..
I remembered when I was 15 and going to eighth grade. My class was on a school trip to Stockholm and was away at various theaters and sporting events. Some went to a football match, me and some to a theater comedy with Robert Gustafsson ("Hotelliggaren") and some of the girls to "Kristina från Duvemåla". Peter Jöback had not yet come out of the closet as a homosexual and was seen as a big girl idol. Many girls in my class were in love with him and had even brought roses to give to him after the show. But when we all met afterwards, the girls were very disappointed and angry, because they had no idea that in most major musical performances actors are often replaced and that Jöback only played a quarter of the performances in Stockholm (which meant that they got to see it the musical without Jöback on stage).
Remembering you really appreciated Miss Li's voice on that duet "Om du lämnade mig nu" and noticed you havent yet reacted to one of her own songs. Personally love "You could have it so much better without me", you should check it out!
You HAVE TO react to Helen Sjöholm ”Du måste finnas”, and PARTICULARLY this version: ruclips.net/video/a2idVI73ais/видео.html It is from the same Musical, and the musical is about the historical time when a large group of swedes emmigrated to America to seek a better life.
Most Americans seems to know why there are so many Irish people (or with Irish heritage) in the US. This song is about the Swedish equivalent - poor, hardworking people who starved, and tried to get a better life in the US. Many died on the road, even before they reached the harbours in Sweden. It is a very tragic story, but it explains the people with Swedish heritage in the US.
Peter have actually played the phantom in phantom of the opera on their 30 year anniversary. Him singing it is found somewhere on youtube from an interview. Please react to that ❤
I did a quick translate of the lyrics. Might be some grammer och spelling errors but anyways. He came with me When I went away that spring Like a dog He followed my way I was happy for his companionship When I searched for the golden land But Kristina, the gold turned to sand We worked hard Yes, everything we had was forsaken He often cried and begged "Let me go back" But I always refused him Though sometimes I had my doubts Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand He, who was my dear friend, He trusted my words even though I already Realized that along this road, I would never find what I was looking for Over the prairies we came to a desert We got lost and started seeing ghosts You hear water ripple When your head is on fire Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand I, who was his dear friend, I took him over land and sea Deserts, the wind has turned A cover over his silent grave From a stinking source He drank water He got sick and passed away from me that night When his eyes had faded The watch fell from his hand Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand
Efter hand återvände omkring en femtedel av emigranterna till Sverige. sweden wasnt a big country at that time so it was really huge numbers of people that left....
This is about a young man and his friend who has set out from Sweden to America to dig gold. his friend wanted to turn back but he forced him to go on. They wandered trough deserts and run out of water. His friend dies and the gold he was logning for suddenly was of no value any longer. It was like sand for him, because he had the blod of his friends on his hands.
So, now that you've heard this one. Please react to Helen Sjöholms "Du Måste Finnas", from the same musical. Its epic! ruclips.net/video/a2idVI73ais/видео.html
You should look for the recording Peter Jöback, Helene Sjöholm, Anders Ekborg and Åsa Berg made when they visited the areas in America where the swedes had to move to because of the poverty. You find it on RUclips All four symbolize big groups that moved: Peter Jöback - his role symbolizes the poor young boys who wanted to leave to seek their fortune in golddigging , and often lost it. Helene - her role symbolizes all the hardworking (godfearing ond godtrusting)women who went and often followed their men. Åsa - her role symbolizes women who had to sell their bodies to survive. She was the "villagehore" and didn´t have any normal life to look for. She left to get a new life for her and for her daughter. Anders role symbolizes all the men who left because they couldn´t feed their children. Children died and they left to find new land. Like everyone here say: Read the books, Jonathan. And watch the films too. AND watch the consert they made in the States in front of relaitves to the immigrants.......tears.....
Some other suggestions on tape. As I think you have not done any will on yet, some you may not have done because they have had international careers though. LALEH - Bara få va mig själv The hellacopters - toys and flavors Hästpojken - Gitarrer & bas, trummor & hat The Mo -Nostalgia Locomotive Markus Krunegård - Jag är en vampyr The Plan - Mon amour Säkret - Vi kommer att dö samtidigt du och jag Bad Cash Quartet - Big Day Coming Kartellen feat Dani M - Mina Områden The Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So Svenska Akademin - Snapphaneklanen Hello Saferide - The Quiz Petter - Så klart The Soundtrack of Our Lives - Instant Repeater ´99 Ison & Fille - Jag Skrattar Idag The Cardigans - My Favourite Game Fattaru - Mina Hundar The Knife - 'Pass This On

det finns ju denna! ruclips.net/video/BL-8TNfAUCI/видео.html
@@HK-jh9gv Tack för länken!
"källan" is a small pond, it tricky cause "källaren" is a similar word.
Källa = spring
Pond = damm
Your Swedish is great!
Thank you!
Reac to Du Måste Finnas by Helen Sjöholm, same musical
Remembering you really appreciated Miss Li's voice on that duet "Om du lämnade mig nu" and noticed you havent yet reacted to one of her own songs. Personally love "You could have it so much better without me", you should check it out!
Speaking of sand; there's a song by Per Gessle called Kung av Sand (King of Sand) you should do that and other Gessle songs.
Pls react to Fattaru-mina hundar. It's an classic old Swedish hip hop. Think u'll like it👍
You HAVE TO react to Helen Sjöholm ”Du måste finnas”, and PARTICULARLY this version:
ruclips.net/video/a2idVI73ais/видео.html
It is from the same Musical, and the musical is about the historical time when a large group of swedes emmigrated to America to seek a better life.
By the way.. Peter Jöback even looks like a Disney prince. ❤️
Yes he does 😍
Most Americans seems to know why there are so many Irish people (or with Irish heritage) in the US.
He came with me
When I went away that spring
Like a dog
He followed my way
I was happy for his companionship
When I searched for the golden land
But Kristina, the gold turned to sand
We worked hard
Yes, everything we had was forsaken
He often cried and begged
"Let me go back"
But I always refused him
Though sometimes I had my doubts
Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand
He, who was my dear friend,
He trusted my words even though I already
Realized that along this road, I would never find what I was looking for
Over the prairies we came to a desert
We got lost and started seeing ghosts
You hear water ripple
When your head is on fire
Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand
I, who was his dear friend,
I took him over land and sea
Deserts, the wind has turned
A cover over his silent grave
From a stinking source
He drank water
He got sick
and passed away from me that night
When his eyes had faded
The watch fell from his hand
Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand
Oh Kristina, the gold turned to sand
The song has been cover in english by Josh Groban "Gold can turn to sand"
Tommy Korberg has the best version of this in my humble opinion.
It's about the gold rush in America. A lot of swedes emigrated. Most came back, having their dreams shattered.
The singer is kind of a staple of Swedish disney songs aswell btw
sweden wasnt a big country at that time so it was really huge numbers of people that left....
The gold turned into sand. Such a good but very sad song.
He's our Aladdin 😄😄
Golden!! Do check out "Stockholm i natt" - a totally fantastic song with Peter! 10 out of 10 points.
Tommy körberg- Anthem. I think you will like it!
The Patrik Isaksson reaction clip is blocked... uploaded on other sites?
❤️
Bra val 👌
So, now that you've heard this one. Please react to Helen Sjöholms "Du Måste Finnas", from the same musical. Its epic! ruclips.net/video/a2idVI73ais/видео.html
Aka Peter "Guldstrupen" Jöback.
The gold turned to sand in English and then ruclips.net/video/ZcyFtJOjEbs/видео.html phantom of the opera med Peter Jöback...

Till havs with jussi björling. This dude can sing..haha
Your Swedish actually sound Swedish, it usually doesn't when Americans speak Swedish😅👍. Have you been studying you?!
From Kristina. Can't go wrong.
If you get the story this is very powerful.
Do listen to Aladdin in Swedish, Jöback is in it!
Tommy Körberg sjöng in låten först: finns klipp här på tuben!
Då du gillar Tommy Körberg så borde du kolla upp hans version av denna låten. Han tar den steget längre.
Dags för en dubbel! "Cornelis Vreeswijk - Sv orginalversion av Cecilia Lind" vs "Petter - Fredrik Snortare och Cecilia Synd"
Jag swishar dirr
