In my humble opinion, he is neither singing about the USSR or the nation state of Russia.

Both Helena Sjöholm and Tommy Körberg singing songs from musicals made of Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson ( The two BB in ABBA). When Abba split those two went on writing musicals, the first one was about Swedish emigrants that went to USA in the beginning of 1900. Helena sang Du måste finnas, in English, with Stockholm’s symfoniorkester. Tommy Körberg sang Anthem from Chess. Björn and Benny were behind Mama Mia the films too. They took Abba songs and put some of them together and made up a storyline from that. Both Helena and Tommy began to sing with Björn and Benny as they were playing more Swedish music, there are a lot of them, but when Helena sang Gabriellas sång I think that it was Björn and Benny who wrote it.
I'm proud of my country -Sweden too, it's just as simple as being proud of your family and shaming people for expressing that is what is unhealthy. You should be proud, I love America! You are great, keep up sharing your gift through being you!

Around 2013 a neighbour took me along to a small venue in stockholm, no announcements (only the jungle-drum), less than 50 in the audience, small band of base git drums. It was Tommy Körberg singing blues. Yes Blues. It totally blew me away. Never heard anything so powerful, sensitive, masterful in the genre, ever after, or before. Once in a lifetime experience, or perhaps even, only Once...

One forgotten song from Chess is The Arbiter. It was Björn Skifs who sang it originally. As i remeberit, in the first perfomanece Elaine Paige was so nervous that Karin Glennmark sang it instead. Björn Skifs was on the billboard in the first half of the 70's, with Hooked on a feeling, a classic song here in Sweden.

One note from a director. 😀 You should try and sum up better in the end of each clip. Love the build up in the beginning. And how you actively listen during the song. But its always a bit disappointing in how you end your videos. It doesn’t result in something. Synd att du valde en version där Tommy är gammal och långt efter sin ”prime”. Den här versionen är från nångång i mitten på 00-talet medan Tommy lät som bäst 88 - 92. Det finns ett antal klipp på RUclips från den tiden när han sjunger Anthem som är helt otroliga.

@@attesmatte Tycker nog att han är något vek i de inspelningarna faktiskt... Hans röst fick inte den där kraften och fylligheten förrän 87-88 nångång. Sedan kan jag sträcka mig till att han höll i sin prime till -95 ungefär, därefter började det sakta gå utför. Idag är han ju en skugga av den han var i början på 90-talet, men han är ju också 73 år gammal så det är ju inget konstigt.
Yeah, that's one of the downsides of me not knowing all of the artists' background. I sometimes end up getting lesser versions of songs as I avoid listening to them beforehand for an honest reaction. I'll try and figure out a way to get the top versions in the future. Thanks for watching!

One note from a director. 😀 You should try and sum up better in the end of each clip. Love the build up in the beginning. And how you actively listen during the song. But its always a bit disappointing in how you end your videos. It doesn’t result in something. You could make some final remarks, or compare with other videos, or grade them in your own system, or something. We need a closure! Haha.

Chess is about the cold war and the character is russian and is singing about his country. His chess opponent is american so its about the historical obsession with chess during the cold war.
You should listen to when he sings this song when he was younger. Tommy still sings fantastic but when he was younger, wow!

I can't remember what title was used, but there's a video of Tommy performing this in Swedish at Allsang pa Skansen with Benny Andersson on piano. If anything, it kicks ass even more than his English version, imho.
