  • This morning I woke up to these notifications from DistroKid, warning me of the potential ban I could receive for botting streams on my songs. Funny part is, the songs aren't botted. In fact, the majority of streams on both songs they flagged are full of streams from THEIR OFFICIAL PLAYLISTS !! wtf, idk what to say.

    I’m dealing with this bullshit right now too. Three of my most popular songs have been removed saying the same thing, 100% artificial streams even though they are streaming on legit Spotify playlists and even getting local radio play. I contacted Spotify about this and was informed that they didn’t request the songs taken down and that the metadata looks good. DistroKid removed the songs. I keep reading posts about this happening to other artists. Their music gets deleted and the distributor pockets the royalties. Trying to deal with DistroKid’s customer support is like bashing your head against the wall. I’m pissed 😡

    Yes...I too have had algorithmic streams flagged for being fraudulent. Like, a lot. It's a problem. Either Spotify can't tell a legitimate stream from a botted stream...or the platform is so heavily populated with fake accounts that the algorithm can't avoid racking up large numbers of botted streams just by doing it's thing. One thing is for sure...it all smells really rotten.

  • @dariusrwalker

      Yea it doesn't make sense. There's some other talk in this comment section with 808riot about some new botting technique that might be happening. Even if all that is true, it's not possible to have 100% fake streams on my song because not only do I stream my own music, but I also used it in Spotify Discovery Mode. So something along the supply chain of data here is incorrect.

      @@MMXVII interesting, there might be something to this because since I've been using discovery mode I've gotten my shit removed twice.. currently, 60% of my streams are coming directly from Spotify's algorithm.. also, I've noticed discovery mode works best when you are running ads in Spotify... so not only are you paying Spotify for those ads, you're also giving them 30% of the streams they're gracious enough to give you in those contexts. Somebody is making money and it sure as hell ain't the artist. imo, it seems distrokid is using the new Spotify policy to justify withholding royalties from anyone who doesn't have label or legal resources; basically claiming they aren't "legitimate" artists. Spotify announced new rules to "tackle" fake streams but they basically put all the work onto the Distributors. So Spotify sends data to them saying "hey your artist ____ has 90% or more fake streams on song x, y, & z" then the distro is supposed to warn the artist. There's some 3 strike system on DistroKid according to the Spotify rep I spoke to. So yes, the notif is from DistroKid, but the problem still remains with Spotify supplying inaccurate data. If you can't prove your streams to be legit (as I did in this video) you are forced to accept the strike and move on.
      The question is, where do the royalties go? Spotify says they won't ever take the songs down, only your distro will, so is it being presented as more strict from the distros? So many unanswered questions.

      Been thinking about it lately. Sadly, Spotify has over 30% of the market share, and Apple Music has over 15%. So at least 45% of the people streaming music use those services. Okay, this may not sound believable to some people but here's what most likely has happened. Just recently (last 6 months or so) there's been a big scheme with botting services that offer streams that come directly from editorial playlists even though your song isn't seen in the actual playlist. So even though you see streams come from those playlists they may not be real unless you actually got placed on the playlist. For example, I see you have gotten streams from some of the top playlists like 'Today's Top Hits' and 'Viral Hits'. While sometimes you can get real streams from these playlists through new recommendations for listeners, if you're getting a high multitude of streams such as your 7000 stream spikes, that is 99% all botted as it all just dropped off straight after. So, even though you didn't pay for the botting service, the botters can still send streams to your song either as a test or for whatever reasons they have. I'd be happy to speak more on this because I know it can sound confusing but it is a real thing unfortunately and I've had a lot of experience with the backend things of Spotify.

    • @MMXVII
      @MMXVII  6 месяцев назад +1

      How is it possible that they feed the streams from official playlists? Also, if it's been 6 months of this, you'd think Spotify would have tackled the false association to their editorials by now. What's the incentive in botting random people from these official playlists? There's no ties to anyone except Spotify so it's not like a worth while investment. I've been added to fake playlists at random but it's clearly to funnel users to an email in description so they get buyers.
      I'm not saying there's no truth to this, but I'm very skeptical because the time & effort to make this weird convoluted bot scheme looks to have no advantage for the hackers.

    I'm going to be honest, I don't think spotify calculates 100% of actual streams, i think they take out their given streams and only calculate curated playlists/streams of people who directly go to your page to listen to your song.

      This could be a possibility, but they had hardly any streams before the Spotify official playlists came in. Very slow traffic from my current fanbase is all the heard it before.
