    As a child from a poor family, collecting these 9 bricks were as meaningfull to me as collecting the dragonballs were to these characters. Receiving one as a birthday or Christmas present meant the world, because I was one step closer to finally completing that infamous logo on my bookshelf. After several years, and working odd jobs as a kid to supplement everything, I finished my collection, which proudly sits in my living room.
    These bricks mean more to people than accuracy or animation or dub quality or anything else. To me they do anyway.

    I don't know if anyone has brought this up but the Orange Bricks are a steal for the price. You can get these for 15-20 bucks and you get between 35-40 episodes. Good luck getting that price with any other anime on the market. Hell some still want over 50 bucks for 13 episodes.

      Just gonna point this out really late, sure it's a good deal, but you can just watch the series on the Funimation website with a subscription for like 6$. The price isn't exactly the issue here, though it was a lot more expensive back in the day. It's the fact that it's one of the most popular anime of all time, and it's never gotten a truly good home set

      I don't think it's even that much cut off. the orange sets are not nearly as bad as what they're making it out to be. I don't know what the hell they're talking about lines missing and shit. there must be something wrong with their fucking TV then. because it looks fine on my TV and yes I have done side-by-side comparisons between the originals and the Orange Box in case if they want to get a wild hair up their ass. this is coming from somebody who's been down with Dragon Ball Z since its creation with the original so probably a longer fan than they have been. and they say that any other set would be better than this one? do they not remember the pioneer release? That's if they've been a fan long enough to know that a company called pioneer released it. that shity voice acting and it just plain out sucked balls with the color and everything about it. they don't know what the hell they're talking about. the orange sets are nowhere near as bad as what they're making it out to be.

    Personally I think that the Orangebrick sets do not suck at all. That was the first Dragonball DVD that I received. I have the entire series in the orange bricks that I got absolutely love it. I don't think it really matters what form of Dragonball you prefer as long as you're loving the series for what it is. I don't know why so many people complain about what version of Dragonball series other people prefer regardless of how you watch it.

    • @AnimeAjay
      @AnimeAjay 9 лет назад +39

      +Jarred Rexroad No, it's not an opinion. You can objectively say that the line-art was compromised. You can objectively say that the cropping removed the intended framing. You can objectively say the colours were saturated and crushed to the point where detail was lost, and the series no longer resembled its intended pallet. On every technical point, it is an objective failure. That is not up for debate. You're entirely free to enjoy the sets, even prefer the visuals. But they are horrendous from an artistic, moral, and technical standpoint.

    • @Scsigs
      @Scsigs 7 лет назад +8

      SO many things wrong with everything you typed, Kaelmax.
      First "except," not "expect." That's the least egregious & if you fucking nitpick with me about that, go fuck yourself because there's worse shit there that I'm going to point out.
      2. There's PLENTY of reason to talk about this because the orange bricks are SHIT, ok bud?
      3. It is NOT the same thing as the Dragon Boxes. Fucking cropping, horrible saturation, & horrible "remastering." The Dragon Boxes, minus having a green hue for some reason, are the OPPOSITE of the Orange Bricks & the Blu-Rays. The Blu-Rays have better cropping, but those are NOT something you should own either.
      4. The Dragon Boxes don't have special features on the DISCS (neither do the orange bricks for that matter), but they have the books, which are a wealth of information on the series, characters, & episodes. Those are GREAT. The Blu-Rays have interviews, behind the scenes stuff, & looks into how they do things. Sure, some of them are boring as shit, but they're still there. The orange bricks have NOTHING in terms of special features of any kind.
      By the way, they're not stupid, they're a bonus for the people buying them in case they don't feel the prices of the sets are justified at first. It's the movie/TV show equivalent to including a season pass for DLC with a video game.

      Third, both the site you mention and Kissanime have it in cropped 16:9, and are in HD, so they are both likely taken from the Blu Ray seasons of DBZ.
      So overall, these are nearly just as bad the orange bricks besides being in HD. They are cropped and remastered with slightly more finesse, but cropping is still cropping.
      In conclusion, make sure to support the official release, and honestly, just watch DBZKai, because it's much better in every way and is in 4:3.

      It's not that it completely changes everything, it's that it's wildly unnecessary. Taking out of a fifth of what you're watching to pretend it's "widescreen" is ridiculously unprofessional video editing. If a big blockbuster film today had a DVD release that claimed it was widescreen but instead had large black bars pasted over the footage instead of the film being properly adjusted, it would be a total embarrassment. People are giving money for your product, and you have the gall to black out sizeable portions of it and call that respectable? It's removing portions of film and pretending it's a selling point by suggesting the aspect ratio has been naturally adjusted. "It's not that bad" shouldn't be what fans stand behind, especially when it's deliberately poorly done. If a hardcore fan of DBZ cares about owning their favorite series in high quality, they shouldn't handwave having a noticeable chunk of the series removed.

    I currently own all 9 seasons of the "Orange Bricks" and just finished all of them. While there are occasionally framing issues where the focal object in the scene is being badly cropped, this is a very rare issue and mostly present only in the first 2 seasons. The missing lines in the animation are also rare and ultimately make no difference in viewing. The audio is great, the quality of the picture is great (with few exceptions in the first 2-3 seasons) and I think these receive far too much hate.

I did a comparison to DBZ/Kai sets a year back and though my prefered way to watch DBZ is through the Blu Ray releases though I believe for someone who's never watched DBZ before and would like to watch it though isn't sure they'll like it they could pick these sets up as they are now dirt cheap. I own all 9 volumes of the Orange Brick set, I bought each release as they came out (as at that time it was the only way I could watch DBZ on TV) and I had no idea about the cropping and colour issues until I read about it online. I have the (Omfg I'm old) the VHS Dragon Ball Z set where each VHS tape box has part of an image pertaining to the Saga like if 1-4 was the Saiyan Saga the complete picture was split between the 4 sides of the box! !! Pretty cool !! (And old) Now I moved on up to Blue Ray or DVD or whatever

    Is seeing the entirety of gohan's hair really that important that I willing to spend an additional 200 hundred dollars to see? I mean really, what am I missing with the orange box sets? Those images with heads cut off. I honestly don't remember seeing that if it did it would pan up to the rest of the face. I don't know what to say. I just finished buying the last of the orange box sets and now you are saying they cut to much out. How about for the original dragon ball? Any recommendations for that one before I buy the first one I see?

    Hey Geekdom please do an in depth video about the Dragonboxes.
    I used to have the Orange Bricks when I was in high school and was happy I had a complete collection of Dragonballz. But then when I went to visit my relatives across the country I found that my home was robbed and my anime dvds were stolen. Eventually in the new year of 2014 I found the first three Dragonboxes and bought them for 50 dollars each. I've now collected all 7 Dragonboxes and absolutely love them!
    Please tell everyone about the greatness of the Dragonboxes.

    I don't recall much else being out there.

  • @creativevisiongaming

    There's not good reason for the Dragon Boxes to be that expensive. The don't need to "correct" anything, just digitize the original show as aired and put it on a DVD or blu ray. Does George Lucas own Funimation or something?

    My favorite feature on the orange bricks waa the marathon feature. Had the opening once and the whole disc plays as a movie instead of doing the opening and intro for every episode. Also had the option to listen to the dub with the Faulconer soundtrack or the OG soundtrack. The Dragon Box sets didn't have either option.

    Hey dude, I actually watched some of your videos and liked them, and was about to subscribe until I saw this video. I think you come off a bit too much like an elitist in this video- and your hysterical hatred of this DVD set is not wholly founded.
    Let me start off by saying that I own the Blue Bricks (DB), Orange Bricks (DBZ) and Green Bricks (GT). I bought the orange and green bricks from someone off Craigslist who had them all brand new for only $120. So I paid just under $11/box. And while there definitely are some issues with the Orange Bricks (the 16:9 resolution being the main issue, removal of film grain), the sets are not all that bad. I watched through the entire franchise a couple years ago (all episodes, movies, and specials from the 3 series pre-Super) and I think it was an awesome way to watch the whole franchise. I also think they actually look better than the Blu-Rays, which are far too bright and look like a flash cartoon sometimes (as you mentioned in your vid).
    The Orange Bricks have 3 grade audio options, the entire series uncut and uncensored, and are readily available to most every DBZ fan. The color correction stuff I honestly didn't notice, and film grain is a bit annoying. The main issue is the cropping, which I always am against; but imagine if this set released in 4:3. You wouldn't be complaining that much. Also, this was only my second viewing of the entire series from start to finish, the first time I had seen the series since it first aired in America on Toonami- and I thought the series looked way better on my HDTV via DVD's then they did on a CRT through cable as most of us watched the show as kids.
    So in short, I feel you greatly exaggerated how "terrible" these box sets are, and they don't even look that bad. Let's hope that Funimation will release the entirety of the Level Sets one day, but for now, the Orange Bricks are definitely watchable and fine.

    • @wesley5729
      @wesley5729 6 лет назад +2

      WestSide1207 they're not unwatchable, but other releases, like the dragon boxes, just put it to shame

    • @WestSide1207
      @WestSide1207 6 лет назад +9

      Come on man, give me a break with the Dragon Boxes already. Most DBZ fans can't afford to spend over $2k on DVD's, therefore, they are pretty much unobtainable. Heck, it's hard just to find a complete set! So the "Dragon Boxes, Dragon Boxes" argument is completely null and void in my opinion. Also, they do not have the Shuki Levi and Bruce Faulconer scores, so they are mainly aimed at the Japanese language fans, which the Dragon Ball is the one anime series in which I prefer the English voices and soundtrack over the original.
      Please name me another complete DBZ box set that can actually be obtained that is better than the Orange Bricks.

    • @wesley5729
      @wesley5729 6 лет назад +6

      WestSide1207 well yeah, the orange bricks are cheap and easy to get. Doesn't mean they are higher quality though

    • @WestSide1207
      @WestSide1207 6 лет назад +7

      What i mean is that at the end of the day, for the majority of all DBZ fans in the U.S- their options are either to get the Orange Bricks, or the current Blu-Rays. Both have their issues. But to call them "complete and utter garbage" and to get so pissed about them is completely non-nonsensical. I hope that they release the Levels set or something similar in it's entirety (which I am sure will happen one day). 4:3 aspect ratio, film grain, correct colors, along with the 3 different audio options in the best resolution possible. I'm going to wait for that release to re-watch the series again.

    What's the issue with the orange bricks, they cut off the screen a little bit? Is that really that bad? I want to watch the show again with the funimation dubs and bruce faulconer soundtrack for the sake of nostalgia like when I watched back in the early 2000s. Idc about this perfection bullshit. I stream anime online and it's not always 1080 hd shit but I get to watch the show in decent quality or better and that's what's important. I've been looking for the funimation dubs/ bruce st episodes online and I don't see them anywhere anymore. Anyone know where to find them or should I just buy a box set? If I buy the orange bricks would they have the bruce faulconer ST and old English voices or do I need the blu rays for that?

I love Dragonball Z since the mid 90s and I'm mad for the fact that my lack of knowledge of certain quality of home entertainment has been distant. • @456jm

    Only reason why I prefer the Orange Bricks over the Blue-Rays is due to the Bruce Faulconer score with original dialogue from the old Toonami televised broadcast on Cartoon Network before Nickelodeon acquired the license for the Kai dub.
    I don't know why FUNimation felt the need to dub Kai after it was originally aired in Japan when the absence of filler material didn't make up for the absence of the original voice actors, dialogue, and Bruce Faulconer score.
    High Definition isn't everything when it comes to animation quality especially in a series like Dragon Ball where the animation cel battle choreography felt as If you we're actually being engaged in the series compared to CGI battle choreography which felt lifeless.

    • @dokankuun6470

      The exact same dub from the Orange Bricks is on the Blu-Ray Season Sets, but if you want the original Toonami version, you're going to have to buy the VHS tapes on eBay, or if you want the Original FUNi dub uncut, you're going to have to buy the uncut bilingual DVD singles by FUNimation on eBay.
