The practice of film restoration today is so excellent and widley done that it blows my mind how Toei or Funimation doesn't understand even the most basic elements of it. Color timing, leaving the grain, and having the correct aspect ratio is so basic. Also using an external source such as fan recorded broadcast audio that sounds 10 x better the masters they are working with now shouldn't be hard. If fans at home can sync up the audio it shouldn't be hard for companies like Toei who just had a blockbuster film in Dragonball Super Broly that made 100 million dollars, to do so. Like what the Heck....
Also in fact in 2011 I remember they Made the level sets Blu Ray that we're high Quality restorations with the original 16mm film Sadly those sell poorly because of the over saturation of DBZ Home releases
I'm tired of people saying this. What really pisses me off is people using only pictures of the first episode to prove it's just the Orange Bricks but in a square. They say the picture is still cut off and whatever. It's not, that is literally THE ONLY EPISODE IN THE SET THAT LOOKS LIKE THAT. Outside of the Dragon Boxes, this is BY FAR, the best release of the entire series.
After hearing these additional details, I emailed Funimation with a request to cancel my order and politely explained why I was no longer interested, leaving a link to this video. Thank you for making the fans aware of what we could expect from this set! If Funimation had been more forthcoming about the nature of this remaster on their website's store page, I never would have pre-ordered the set in the first place.
Something I think needs to be said is that, while the images shown have really poorly done, overzealous DNR that smears the linework and removes detail, grain removal, even DNR, isn't inherently bad. The problem., contrary to what some have said, isn't that DNR is being used at all, but that funimation is either too lazy, cheap, or incompetent to apply it in such a way that it strikes a better balance between removing grain (which, ideally, would not be there to begin with, and is just something unavoidable with how DB was made) and preserviing detail. Even Animeajay has noted that grain removal can be done well.
LadyKraken wait a minute, what do you mean that Dragon Ball Super Broly film has green tint? I ordered mines a couple weeks ago, and I got it last Tuesday from Amazon.
@@SSJ491 The blue ray US release has a green tint, probably due to a corrupted master from Toei, I suggest you to look at AnimeAjay's twitter, he extensively talks about it with many comparisons. LadyKraken This is why they should've wait until Toei Animation released the film first, and then FUNimation will remaster it from Toei to release in a later date.

DRAGON how come the original Dragon Ball DVD sets (Blue Bricks) have 4:3 aspect ratio, and Dragon Ball GT DVD sets (Green Bricks) have 4:3 aspect ratio. But not Dragon Ball Z?! Dragon Ball Z wasn't 16:9 aspect ratio back then in the '80s, '90s, and the early 2000s. Because we used to have a square television (4:3 screen) back then and DBZ when it was aired at that time during their prime it was 4:3. Now we have high definition (HD) television sets in today's generation, FUNimation is releasing the 16:9 aspect ratio of Dragon Ball Z (Orange Bricks, Kai, and the Blu-ray DBZ season sets). So I was wondering what if FUNimation just listen to us and Toei can give the remasters to FUNimation. That way FUNimation can fix this problem.
timmyboy yeah, I know I love DBZ too, but come on guys, the original Dragon Ball needs spotlight as well. The Dragon Ball franchise as a whole was massively popular around the world (well except GT), not just Z. My Hero Academia, and Boruto became popular in today's generation because of merchandise sales. But nothing became much higher than Dragon Ball, because many people really like Dragon Ball due to its content that Toei Animation, Bandai, Toyotaro, and Akira Toriyama gave it to the fans crave for mode great things for the franchise.

Basically the best is the Dragon Box release but it's super expensive and not easy to find. The second best would be the level sets but only two were released and then it was canceled. The easiest to get are the blu ray set that was cropped and doesn't look the best. But it is the easiest to get along with the orange bricks which are even worse.
I get that people are talking about how the video quality is the problem, but what about the way the audio sounds? I want a new 4:3 release of DBZ with the ORIGINAL Funimation dubbed audio, since the release of the orange brick sets, the funimation audio has been re-dubbed, one prime example is the entire Garlic Jr Saga, especially the scenes with Vegeta (you can go & compare). I get you guys both said the original dub will be on the blurays but I highly doubt it will be the OG dub, I believe it will be the same dub it has always been. I want the true experience of the show as I saw it when I was a kid, it's a shame that I gotta rely on poor quality DBZ torrents from the dawn of the internet along with my DBZ VHS collection to fulfill my needs.
It's hilarious to see the backing counter go down. It was at 2,800 something yesterday, now it's back to 2,791. I really do hope they listen and give what the fans really want.
For those wondering, I contacted Funimation. Here was their response: Thank you for contacting Funimation Support and for your interest in the 30th Anniversary Dragon Ball Z set! There will be two English audio tracks for this release, depending on which version of the show you are watching. The US Broadcast version features Mark Menza’s music for episodes 1-67 and Bruce Faulconer’s music for episodes 68 through the end of the series. The Uncut version uses the Japanese music, though the audio is otherwise dubbed.
I think the best we can hope for at this point would be if someone within the Dragon Ball community makes a fan restoration project (akin to Harmy's Despecialized Editions of the original Star Wars trilogy). Since Funimation won't supply the demand for a definitive release, I say let the fans take a shot at making one. Take the Dragon Box footage, but with the picture quality of the Level sets. If Harmy can remove the CGI from the Special Editions and restore the Star Wars films to their original theatrical presentations, it's possible to do something similar to that for the Dragon Ball series.
I don't think it's a matter of what fans want, I think it's a matter of Funimation not knowing or understanding what remaster means and how it's done. It's not hard to take a look at other films that do it correctly...
Its funny you mention buying a TOEI set from Japan. Cause thats what alot Japaness fans do. I got japanese friends that imported the funimation brick sets of BD, DBZ, movies, and GT. Cause they are cheaper then Japanese sets. One of them even thought i had to be really to own all the sets.
Speaking of grain removal, I know that Q-Tec did this well with the first 98 episodes DBZ Kai, where they captured the frames with an HD camera zoomed out so it looks as good as it is in standard definition, but there's no grain.
Im scared that if I buy this they will just turn around and come out with a better release immediately, Just like when I bought the orange bricks, and the dragon boxes came out immediately after.
Or the level set.... had everything anyone could ever want. Including the faulconer music. But Kai had its dvd sets coming out and the dragon boxes were still big so the level set got cancelled after like 35 episodes
Cancelled my order sadly. I don’t trust Funi after the green tint with Broly. Plus the Broly preorder was supposed to come with a free Goku figure and they didn’t include it in my order. The post credits scene is also missing from the movie.
People need to also remember you cant go into that deep of a remastering a 30 year old product without the original masters. So some of this falls on TOEI.
Typically I don't let my voice be heard due to laziness and thinking everyone else has got it covered.. but I even just @ funimation. Thanks Geek and Ajay for fighting for the fandom who aren't blind. LOL
Thanks for the video Geedom + Ajay. Couldn't agree more with both of your points on this release. I'd rather shit orange bricks than get this 30th anniversary collection. The Kai blu-rays are sounding really good to me right now so I might just get those until we finally get a decent DBZ collection using the old masters without taking away the original experience and quality.
medisand well that's how Dragon Ball is massively popular in Japan, because a lot of people really love the franchise and supporting it. Same thing around the world too.
Funimation need to have their distribution rights revoked. Give the series to people who know how to put out a decent set, not milk the series with shoddy releases over the space of a decade.
Love the videos. I appreciate both of yalls honestly. I would love to have the set.. and have been waiting a long time for a good remaster set.. I thought this would be it but from the looks of it. Idk. I haven’t bought any set yet.
I think that they're jonesing to not put in the work while still getting the money, and perhaps getting more money later if/when they actually do an ultimate and definitive release later on if they don't do it now.
They stated that they wanted to make a certain amount of money to officially start working on the project, I don't think what we saw is what'll be the final product. But yourself and Ajay know a lot more so I guess fuck my opinion. 😂😂😂
I'm so on the fence about this. I don't think I've seen the 4:3 aspect since the original air days on Tonami so it would be great to really see what a remastered is capable of doing with it's full work involved. I like many fans here have been in the Funimation boat of re-buying more time then I can count. This feels like just another repurchase that I'm going to end up re-buying the series eventually again..
Geekdom101 I made a video covering this already yes the falconer score is being in blu-ray set I got an email from Funimation representatives which I show in my video.
You’d think after screwing up & criticized so many times and being, they would finally get it right but apparently not....looks like I’ll be sticking with the Dragon box DVDs
Fact, it took them so long to reach 3000 goal make me kinda happy :) If this new set at least had Broadcast Audio then maybe, but if not, then no, im gonna stick to Dragon Boxes
Big D if you did a history of all the DBZ home releases would be awesome. Your icons video on this was awesome. But I would love to see a video with your editing style
I'll never understand anybody doing a remaster and reissue and not doing it 100% right. People put a good amount of time, money and effort into partial or flawed remasters and it leaves room for it to need to be done again and again. Just take a little bit more time and effort to do it right the first and only time. I'd think it would save you time, money and effort in the long run. I don't know...maybe I'm missing something. They should know more than me.
Two words: ColdFusion. The whole world already knows what I'm capable of and what I have access to, if it takes the combination of 2-3 releases to make a single good edition.
I ripped the 4:3 dragon box sets and synced the Bruce Faulconer track to them with post production software a LONG time ago. It took me a few hours, how can funimation not do this?
@@xXKillaBGXx Highly doubtful. The Season Set Blu-rays were released in the 2010s, so I'm sure that FUNimation is legally allowed to use that audio track whenever it wants.
I bought this back in 2019 and now totally regret it. I wish I had the Manga UK Season sets instead. The packaging on this 30th Anniversary set ruins the discs.
Just not a fan on how they are handling this. I believe I'm gonna pass on this, even though the Goku figure looks pretty sweet.......................yeah, im gonna pass.
Proto Man to stretch the images the zoom in chopping off the top and bottom of the frame This lead to shots with the top of people’s heads missing or there mouths missing when talking it’s distracting Having the full image is best even if in 4:3 which yeah isn’t awesome Especially when to change it it’s just a matter of option selection on your tv or player The only way you could get the proper ratio’s is to reframe and reshoot the whole thing from scratch they are never going to do that even more expensive
The funny thing is, people are cancelling their reservations of this set (including me.) The number of reservations went from like 2938 to 2791. I hope FUNimation realizes that fans are dissatisfied.
The only way to get a proper release is the day that Funi loses the license which would be sad because everyone knows that they've been milking this shit for 2 decades which blows my mind
Idk if I would even bother buying a definitive edition blu-ray release at this point lol. I went pretty far to get every DBZ blu-ray and the cropping doesn't really bother me that much so I think I'd be fine with what I have now. I think the only way I'd be pushed to buy the series again is if this definitive release ends up being a complete full series boxset. Buying series by season can be surprisingly tiresome lol.
FYI: There is no Manga UK version of this DBZ 30th Set. This is a Funimation exclusive set.

*Brings up Metal Gear Solid, a game from the late 90s.*
Geekdom, I missed my chance to say hi to you in person at Kamehacon
Hi
LOL
about to get 100 views
Weirdo LOL
Short answer: No. Definite answer: HELL NO!!!
Anyone hear any updates on the Toei remaster?! It's been 4 YEARS
I can't figure out how to cancel my order.. I bought it immediately before realizing what they looked like.
Just send them an email canceling the preorder. Give them your order number and the reason for the email and they will cancel it. I did it!
People need to also remember you cant go into that deep of a remastering a 30 year old product without the original masters. So some of this falls on TOEI.
True
Short answer: No
Long answer: NOOOOOOOOOO
I'd pay $150 for all the blurays in a neat simple box. No extra special gifts, posters or artbooks.
Straight to the point. Here's my money, your move.
The answer to the title is no
Typically I don't let my voice be heard due to laziness and thinking everyone else has got it covered.. but I even just @ funimation. Thanks Geek and Ajay for fighting for the fandom who aren't blind. LOL
I would just get the Kai 1.0 releases. They're good enough for me and personally I enjoyed them (music scandal notwithstanding)
KamenRidyaa honestly. its a good version of the story and at least doesnt look like zoomed in crap
Japan gets everything.... Too bad Funimation cant import the Japanese release with subs
medisand well that's how Dragon Ball is massively popular in Japan, because a lot of people really love the franchise and supporting it. Same thing around the world too.
I’ll be happy with the set, even though it’s not perfect, if they have the original broadcast audio.
If not I’ll just probably resell it on eBay
Funimation need to have their distribution rights revoked. Give the series to people who know how to put out a decent set, not milk the series with shoddy releases over the space of a decade.
Already have them on blue ray so no I’m not
Love the videos. I appreciate both of yalls honestly. I would love to have the set.. and have been waiting a long time for a good remaster set.. I thought this would be it but from the looks of it. Idk. I haven’t bought any set yet.
Tempted to tbh. Another thing is nothing is perfect and the fandom may need to swallow that pill. Easier said than done. Including for me.
As a collector: sure, why not
When a company that big try’s to crowd fund it’s a slap in the dick.
I think that they're jonesing to not put in the work while still getting the money, and perhaps getting more money later if/when they actually do an ultimate and definitive release later on if they don't do it now.
This is why some fans settle with bootlegs.
Good ol' AnimLabs
Quick answer: No, No you shouldn't.
Remaster, more like demaster
Won't be buying.... It's not what the fans or myself really want
Man you sound like James Franco. Great vid.
My American pea brain can't handle cursing
Hell no if you have the blue Ray's or Dragonboxes, you have the same thing
I feel like funimation thinks oh slap the 4:3 aspect ratio and we'll buy it. I realized if it isnt like the level sets then no buy
Geekdom101 I made a video covering this already yes the falconer score is being in blu-ray set I got an email from Funimation representatives which I show in my video.
You’d think after screwing up & criticized so many times and being, they would finally get it right but apparently not....looks like I’ll be sticking with the Dragon box DVDs
it's rare the dragon ball community come to an agreement but the majority seems to be upset with this
I’d have to disagree about the majority. They hit their 3K goal so it got the support that Funimation wanted.
@@GSPRKY yeah but I think a lot of those people would still agree that Funimation could do a lot better
Fact, it took them so long to reach 3000 goal make me kinda happy :) If this new set at least had Broadcast Audio then maybe, but if not, then no, im gonna stick to Dragon Boxes
But they still did it!
Danny!!!! Could u please try to interview somebody from Funimation ???? Not a voice actor but somebody behind the scenes .
"Hmmmm... Yes I see, we need to go back to 16:9!!!"
- Somebody at Funi, probably.
Did anyone already make that joke?
I think Funimation needs to make a better release and a new Z dub
Geekdom: “I know a lot of y’all are mad at funimation for lots of different reasons...”
Me: Jelly bean.
I ripped the 4:3 dragon box sets and synced the Bruce Faulconer track to them with post production software a LONG time ago. It took me a few hours, how can funimation not do this?
Yes! This is what i want!
@@xXKillaBGXx Highly doubtful. The Season Set Blu-rays were released in the 2010s, so I'm sure that FUNimation is legally allowed to use that audio track whenever it wants.
the dragon boxes were a contracted thing between Toei and funi..they probably arent allowed to use that footage how they want.
I bought this back in 2019 and now totally regret it. I wish I had the Manga UK Season sets instead. The packaging on this 30th Anniversary set ruins the discs.
So the question is, which is the best boxset to go for? Thanks
Kai looks better than this remaster
Because kai was made with actual care, outside of final chapters that is
Answering the question: No. Just buy the Dragon Box. Is already pretty good with no cut, not cropped 4:3 and stuff.
@Lighting Blade I've bought it for 80 dollars, in march. Used, but is a-ok.
Gabriel Campos you bought all 7 for 80 bucks?
Lol yeah not spend over 1000 bucks on dvds..I’ll settle for Kai over that BS
@@tylerman39 I can't with Kai. Is so shitty, in my opinion.
@@tylerman39 yep. I bought from some guy here in my country. Brazil.
Ajay is on this video???
*Grabs popcorn*
Funimation has lost their minds at this point.
Thank you for the video. I was going to buy it, but now I’m just going to wait for something better.
I bought it, but thats because I dont own any dbz collections already and I dont want to spend $1,000 on db
SHOULD YOU BUY the Dragon Ball Z 30th anniversary Blu-Ray?
*DAGA KOTOWARU*
Funimation: "NANI???"
Any set with Japanese HD audio? Or is there only mono audio?
*hides in the comments after already preordering mine*
I'll pray for your soul. I'll be looking at you from heaven every day
Yeah im not risking not getting a better release. Im not importing a no sub version sorry.
I regret not buying the dragon box. So I’m buying this set and the one that comes after!
I’m happy with my pre-order.
email and demand refund
Tell them why too
Just not a fan on how they are handling this. I believe I'm gonna pass on this, even though the Goku figure looks pretty sweet.......................yeah, im gonna pass.
Why can’t they get this right
4:3 ratio
Original English/Japanese dub
Original Japanese music
And faulconer music
And stop scrubbing the image
Does it take getting used to the vertical black bars? Also if you stretch it to fit the screen does it really distort the image of the characters?
Proto Man to stretch the images the zoom in chopping off the top and bottom of the frame
This lead to shots with the top of people’s heads missing or there mouths missing when talking it’s distracting
Having the full image is best even if in 4:3 which yeah isn’t awesome
Especially when to change it it’s just a matter of option selection on your tv or player
The only way you could get the proper ratio’s is to reframe and reshoot the whole thing from scratch they are never going to do that even more expensive
The funny thing is, people are cancelling their reservations of this set (including me.) The number of reservations went from like 2938 to 2791. I hope FUNimation realizes that fans are dissatisfied.
No they arnt that is units remaing they changed the counter to count down and not up
tylerman39 oh my bad. Thanks for letting me know.
I'm glad I have the Drahonbox Z boxsets,because I wont but this,unless it's fixed
lol, they ended up releasing the same footage from here again anyways. Wasn't very limited after all
The only way to get a proper release is the day that Funi loses the license which would be sad because everyone knows that they've been milking this shit for 2 decades which blows my mind
Woah the God himself AnimeAjay
Ajay has made an incredible video on this subject matter but I still appreciate your point of view too!
Which version of dbz is streaming on funimation now is it the same as the orange bricks the blue ray?
I'll wait for the 4K seasons release :D
That would be lit but I doubt it would be much different than 1080p..the show can only look so good being as it was filmed on 16mm film
